2023 Las Vegas Raiders - RIP Jack - one of the greatest Super Bowl moments ever (5 Viewers)

this is so true. these games are ugly
I think a lot of teams have holes, and depth is being tested. The thing that doesn't cost money is system, consistency. If teams were selling out short because of Jimmy G, and AOC is better, I'm in. But if we need a new OG, maybe that's the ticket. There is some ugly Twitter video from our pass pro.

The way this season has gone, I am OK with the Jimmy G signing. So many teams sold out for QB lately, and it cost MOST off them.

We held serve with Jimmy G. We can be in the QB market next year. And less teams will be in it. We may not even need to trade up.

Tell you what, if AOC is good, that's five more years of McDaniels.
Patriots we’re almost always slow starters every year too

agreed. and i was speaking beyond the raiders. almost all of the football I'm watching this year is ugly janky football. on both sides of the ball, but on the offensive side, it's more apparent to me.

I think a lot of it is starters don’t play much in preseason anymore, the first 5-6 games of the regular season are the new preseason. Plus QBs wear the red “don’t touch me” jersey all offseason until week one. It’s a whole heck of a lot easier playing QB knowing you won’t get hit. When the “gloves come off” I think there’s QBs out there that are having a hard time adjusting.
And injuries and concussions seem to be on the rise even though the NFL tries to takes steps to increase player safety. These guys are just too big and fast these days. And not being able to target the head area anymore has lead to a lot more lower body injuries, so depth is being tested by every team right now. For example, has anyone seen Nate Hobbs lately?

I don't think this conclusion has any certainty, but if it proves to be true, I'd take it. Not looking for perfection. Looking for hope. Looking for improvement. If McD can provide those latter two, then I don't have a problem with giving him more time to build momentum. I need to see evidence that he can do that though, and three tight victories against **** teams isn't enough.

Remaining schedule has a lot to work with in terms of grooming and assessing a rookie QB for the future. If in doing so, they sacrifice this season, it's still worth it to better figure out what they actually have in AOC. Only KC and Det are in the top half of D's in terms of fantasy points conceded to QBs. That's not a perfect indicator by any means - NYJ, e.g., may be a worse matchup than both right now - but it does show that there's enough meat on the bone to see if AOC is capable of eating.

If AOC hits (and/or if they draft a first round 2024 rookie to start next year), here is how they get out of the Grop deal this offseason:

POST-6/1 RELEASE
2024 Current Cap hit: $28,517,000
2024 Dead Cap: $15,517,000
2025 Current Cap hit: $28,517,000
2025 Dead Cap: $12,801,000
2024 Cap Savings: $13,000,000
2025 Cap Savings: $15,715,000

Last figures really the most relevant. If Jimmy's a bust (he is), you punt, take the cap savings for the next two years, and use that money to buy more defenders and OL. There is already a budgeted amount for AOC's super cheap contract, and contracts for next year's draft picks, including any rookie QB. So that $13 MM and $15.7 MM really can be used for DEF/OL in free agency - assuming they don't make some boneheaded move like signing another retread FA QB like Tannehill or some other turd with that money.

Even if AOC hits big over the remaining season, I'd still look to draft one of the rookie QBs coming out. There are so many of them that there's a good chance one of them would fall into BPA status at some point in the early rounds of the draft for the Raiders.

To be fair, there is a lot of ugly football being played right now (especially on offense). Not just in Vegas. They’re winning in spite of themselves, with a backup QB.
In the offseason many said if Hoyer were playing, the season would be over. Well, it’s far from over, and a case can be made that the offense seems to run smoother when Garopollo is out. When the longest pass play of the season is thrown by the 38 year old back up, something just isn’t right with your starter.
The offense opened up more with Hoyer. It is amazing what can happen when you throw the ball further than 10 yards down the field.

I have yet to see anything this year from Jimmy G that would make sense to keep him as the starter. I don't wish him ill will by any means but based on his history and he went to the hospital... I wouldn't be surprised that he is out of the year. Even if he happens to be ok.... O'Connell needs to take the leadership from here.

Jacobs isn't going to be able to run with Jimmy G not throwing past the 10 yard markers all game long.
I don't buy this, it didn't hinder the Niners running backs in 2019 and 2021 when he was relatively healthy. Jacobs is tip toeing around and not blasting through holes.

They had Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDaniel designing that running game. Not exactly apples to apples with the 2023 Raiders offensive design.

Jacobs looks the same as he did last year - it's the way defenses are attacking the Raiders this year that's different.

the bit about no one plays in the preseason was in the unedited portion of my quoted post above. i postulated the same thing. i really think it's a factor

and until this game, the line was getting slapped around constantly. and they still weren't that great, but were noticeably better.

Hobbs has been inactive due to an ankle injury

A lot more ingenuity and playcalling with a lot of YAC guys that you can get the ball quickly to within that 10 yards and they break it long. In SF, they built it offense to be all about the running game and short passing game. This isn't the same offense and we don't have guys that are YAC studs. We have plenty of offensive talent but that isn't what they do.

I kept saying it but got boo'd by many... Jimmy G has been one of the luckiest QB's in NFL history. Up until now, he has been on good teams with one of the better defenses in the league, good Olines and no lack of offensive weapon talent.

This. Jimmy G was a dumb move and it’s time to look to the future. The Raiders must find out what they have in AOC. There are no truly dominant teams in the NFL this year but the Raiders are not going to compete with the upper tier of teams. Play the long game.

Your conflating the two moves. He's not saying getting rid of Carr was dumb. He's saying paying Jimmy was dumb. And it was. Bake show Mayfield signed for 1 yr 6 MM. Jared Stidham signed for 2 yrs 10 MM. Jimmy's contract is a no brainer to get out of at this point, because dude is a complete waste of (cap and otherwise) space, and well, the dead money is spilled milk. But that doesn't mean the milk wasn't obviously going to spill, not just in hindsight, but in real time before and in the moment they inked his noodle!

If JG wasnt a Patriot under McD back in the day i doubt they ever sign him, but the coach saw one of ''his guys'' available and chomped at the bit.

McD is going to ride the JG pony for as long as he can , out of pride if no other reason.

I would go further.... if he wasn't a Patriot before AND his next stop wasn't in SF where the team carried him, he would not be signed by us. He was signed because he has familiarity with the system and because SF could still consistently win when he was at QB.

Hoyer, freaking Hoyer, looked better at QB than Jimmy G has all season.

The smart play this week is to give O'Connell all the practice snaps, have Hoyer as backup and rest Jimmy G. See how O'Connell does. Hopefully he impresses then you have a question to answer. If he doesn't then I think by default, Jimmy G comes back to start (until he gets hurt again).

Our offense hasn't been this ineffective in a very long time. It is odd that our defense is actually starting to play decently well. Maxx, of course, is a beast but some players have improved. Moehrig has been playing much closer to his draft expectations this year. Spillane has been playing well. Robertson has been a little up and down but he has stepped up. We even got a little bit of push from the middle last game with Jenkins and Butler getting sacks with Nichols getting in on half a one with Crosby. We still need more talent (or guys to improve) to get to what I would call a good defense but they have been playing better than we have had a defense play in.... what.... 20 years? If we had this defense with last years offense (even if it was not one of the better offenses we have had in recent years) that would be a lot of wins.

This is interesting.

I also saw a 'report' that supposedly he will only play for 5 teams. We are one of the 5 listed. I never mentioned it because I can't find a reliable source that is reporting it. I saw this as well. I am not sure if there are any NFL rules not allowing this but if some dumb team does do this to land him then I bet the NFL will have a rule real quick not allowing it anymore.

No, I’m not. I’m not saying it was or wasn’t dumb. Either the release of carr or the signing of Jimmy G

The choices for a new qb were slim. They let stidham walk and other than being brittle and not having the best deep ball Jimmy g made sense. Saved the team some money and brought a total dreamboat to Vegas. 😎

Would we the fans have excepted a carson Wentz/Matt Ryan? Begrudgingly. Same with AOC. But with a little more excitement. I think russel wilson is one of the only late round qbs to start by winning the job in training camp.

This season has always been a 6-9 win season. Regardless of who’s at qb. Me. Tom Brady. Mahomes. Wouldn’t matter. A few breaks here or there will send the team up or down in the standings. Such as the int at the end zone due to terrible play calling in the chargers game. Raiders should have won that game. That would make them 4-2

For the Jimmy g haters, he looks to be as brittle as ever. So we will see someone else behind center. At least this week. Whoever it is, May the o line give him some time and open up some holes. This is a winnable game.

This is interesting.

Can an active player have an ownership stake? I didn’t think so

I thought it already was against the rules. Which is why if Brady becomes a partial owner of the Raiders, he could never suit up again. Say Williams gets drafted by the Raiders and has a % of ownership how could he ever be allowed to play for another team if he has a financial investment in the Raiders, it’s a conflict of interest. He would have to sell his stake in the Raiders before he were able to move on to another team.

I would think it would be but I am not an expert on NFL bylaws.

Further, isn't the NFL draft pick pay scale basically codified in the bargaining agreement?

According to PFT, Rodgers was trying to get ownership equity worked into his contract. If he had been able to do that, the Jets would have given him a small stake in the team that would have replaced some of the cash in his deal.

It's not clear how the Jets felt about this proposal, because they never got a chance to respond. According to the Sports Business Journal, NFL owners actually voted just last week to put a ban on giving ownership equity to players or team employees. This new rule was passed on July 20, the same day that the owners approved the sale of the Commanders to Josh Harris.

SBJ listed multiple reasons why the owners decided to implement this rule. On the players' end, the two biggest ones are:
  • 1. Owners don't want players given equity because it could cause issues with the salary cap.
  • 2. Not all NFL teams have the same ability to issue equity, which could put multiple teams at a disadvantage.

This is interesting.

And how about the reason that most players change teams at some point in their career. Talk about conflict of interest if you go up against the team you partial own.

Sounds like he’s going to be super easy to work with :eyeroll:

Dude has some serious off-field personality flags. His talent might still be worth the headache, or perhaps it isn't. First it was dictating which team drafts him. Now partial ownership demands and he hasn't even taken a single NFL snap. SMDH

The worst part is apparently he and his agent don’t even know it’s against the rules. If he thinks he’s going to win that battle against 32 super rich people, he better be prepared for a career in the Canadian Football League lol.

He WAS interested and inquired about it ,but the league ruled against it so it will never happen. Doesnt mean he didnt want to do it, just makes you pause on what kind of player coming out of college would even think of it. Something to ponder before a draft, thats all.

Florio's reporting in July was, in fact, that Williams (and Aaron Rodgers, for what it's worth) were among a select few players who inquired about team ownership stakes. So at one point, the USC quarterback was looking into that possibility. But what this recent revival of the report fails to mention on social media is that Florio's report was based on the league shutting down that possibility entirely.

The report in question regarding Caleb Williams was simply that he was interested but that the NFL had ruled that players (among others) are not eligible to have ownership stakes in a team. Thus, there is literally no chance that the QB still wants that because, by the league's newly stated rules, it is actually not allowed.

you mean other than he actually inquired into being a partial owner of the team that drafts him ?

Thats kind of like someone applying for jobs asking if they get hired can they be a partial owner of that company , seems slightly pretentious .

Its not that big of a deal but just seems odd , a talking piece if you will, about a potential draft prospect over stepping

So I am clear, a person is doing their due diligence to find out their worth and they are being ridicule. Regardless of what is meant by the word substance, it is a non issue. League rule do not permit players to have ownership. End of story. I feel like anything beyond that is jumping to conclusions.

can we get back to discussing real football issues? Who is starting at QB for the Raiders this week?

Starbucks doesn't even realize how great of a barista I could be... ok?

Let's see what the rook has! I thought he did well in his first go around, however his pocket presence / holding onto the ball HAS to improve. Quicker throws and the fact we aren't facing a pissed off Mack should help.

I want him and Tucker to connect deep badly.
