2024-25 NBA Thread: Game 7!! (51 Viewers)

Nuggets' first rounder, Daron Holmes, tore his Achilles tonight. Bummer. I don't think he was going to be a real rotation player this year, but I think this probably makes it tough for him to make any real impact until year 3.

For a team with a weak bench, donating a roster spot to him and Jordan is pretty rough. I don't think the Nuggets have signed a third 2-way, so I think this all but guarantees it goes to a big.

Terrence Shannon Jr looking fantastic. Gift he fell to Wolves. Easy lottery talent in the draft.

There's really nothing he can't do offensively or defensively
His path to PT is looking a lot better with Kyle Anderson leaving.

Nuts some of the guys that went ahead of him in a terrible draft.

NBA game NBA body.

Brunson is literally crazy. Players union should jump in front of that contract like they’re trying to stop a train.
Disagree with the first sentence but agree with the second sentence. This is a bad result for the NBAPA, and potentially owners of smaller markets as well.

I totally understand why he would take less money to stay in NYC with his friends. Making an extra $40 million or whatever over the life of that contract isn't going to substantially increase his happiness in life more than being where he wants with the people he wans around him. I assume he had a conversation with the Nova contingent there as well as Knicks management that he is taking this discount with the understanding that they are going to treat him and his friends well. Ultimately, there is no way to stop them from turning around and trading him or Hart or whatever but that would kill management's reputation around the league.

Frankly, I'm surprised we aren't seeing more of this with these crazy salaries. And as salaries go up 60% or whatever over the next half decade, I think we will see more of this.
He's not actually taking less money. This is brilliant media hype by Brunson and his agent.

I suppose it depends on how you look at it. It's a max extension in that it is the most the Knicks could have offered because he's on a incredibly team friendly deal now and they can only extend him for 40% more than he is making this season. Any sane person in his shoes would have declined next season's PO, so let's pretend like that doesn't matter for the rest of this discussion.

Next season this extension is going to give him roughly $34.9m, he was eligible (and if he made it to free agency reasonably healthy could have gotten) for 35% of the cap at an assumed $46.4m. Over next season and the following two, he is giving them a total of $37m of discount. He'll opt out of the PO in 28-29 if he is healthy, so there isn't any baked in savings there.

I assume what you were referring to is the 5th year - I do agree that the agent is comparing apples to oranges when making claims of $113m of savings because over half of that "savings" comes in a year which he may be able to recoup that much or more. But, he unequivocally gave them a huge savings for the three seasons after next year.
Yeah. Over the same five year period, if he waited a year to extend or if he opts out at the PO of this deal and re-extends, both outcomes pay like $260M over 5 years. Someone laid the math out above. It's just not some crazy sacrifice by him to get $260M, some of it a year or two later than otherwise. Especially if he cares a lot about winning.

I'm starting to think Bronny James isn't a good shooter.

:ducksforcover:
Overall 6 for 26 (23% FG%), 0 for 12 from 3, and just 5 assists in 78 minutes.

On the one hand, it’s not like everyone didn’t know that he’s a project. On the other hand, if he’s this much of a project, probably should have stayed in college for another year or been undrafted.
I have never understood this. Stay in school and play ball part-time while dealing with tests and homework, or go to the league were you have access to the best coaches and trainers in the world and just play basketball and work out all the time. NIL changes it a bit since in the NBA you'd be getting paid versus no pay, but overall if you can get on an NBA (or G-League) roster, you should do it over school.

If you're not ready, I'm sure it can kill your confidence and development. Also some folks want an education and to experience the college life while raking in that NIL and booster loot - not a bad option imo.

He’s obviously gonna have to go to the G League if they’re interested in his development but he just got 8M guaranteed so it’s kind of hard to argue he should’ve stayed in college.

Tons of NFL players restruct to help with cap hits.
Almost all NFL contracts allow teams to restructure without asking. Considering they are giving most of a salary up front, it is bad business to turn down money. Restructure is really a bad word for it.
Makes it sound like there are discussions and compromises happening.

Players rarely have a say in 'restructuring', and every restructure makes their cap numbers bigger down the road, making them more likely to be cut. Very different than the NBA

I was just speaking in general but Bronny is a unique case. Think he was making $6mm+/year in college which is crazy and probably would have increased if he stayed longer and averaged more than 4 points.

I really liked him as a prospect and thought he'd be able to play for you guys right away. That sucks.

That sucks. The lack of depth in Denver is definitely a concern.

It was tough watching Bronny last night. He's just not ready and needs to develop a shot. :lmao: at Pelinka's reaction toward the end and that guaranteed contract:

NBA fans would absolutely have turned down 8 mm to practice basketball year-round, instead would have gone back to college taking classes because it's the right thing to do.

I watched Bronny his Sophomore year of HS play a couple games at a local tournament.

Outside of his name, he would have never stood out. He was decidedly average compared to his peers basketball wise on that stage (big national invite level tournament). Granted he was a Sophomore, but most NBA talents start to manifest by then.

And its not like he's losing on NIL. If anything, his endorsement/brand income will probably go up from last year.

If you are rich beyond belief anyway I would think it would be more fun to go develop/live it up in college and hopefully star on a decent team rather than spend the next three years grinding it out in the G league. Or maybe this was just his best chance of being drafted at all because his dad had even more leverage than normal this summer.

That's my hunch as well. More time at USC could also expose him further and convince many he's not an NBA product. Easier to rationalize a late draft pick since he's very much an unknown and has upside/pedigree on his side.

The volume of Bronny James being bad at shooting and presidential candidate assassination attempt jokes on Twitter is both sad and hilarious. One of the better crossovers of the year!

On that note, I really think many teams missed an opportunity to snipe the Lakers, create drama/content and hold out for a nice ransom. Wish more teams were like F Klutch. If only Belichick was an NBA GM.

Yes and no, there are pros and cons to Klutch/agents with a lot of power.

Team USA held on to beat Australia 98-92 (after being up 24 points in the second half). They haven't exactly been dominating so far in their first two tune-up games.

“The Minnesota Timberwolves today announced the team has signed guard PJ Dozier. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.”

I liked Dozier before he hurt his knee but I'm kind of amazed he is back in the league. He was a guy that was something of a man without a position offensively (defensively, he can/could guard 1-3). He's not a good enough shooter to play off ball and not good enough with the ball to play on ball. Seems like one of those guys that was a fringe NBA player because he doesn't have a stand out skill, but in the G-League, his all around skill set was too good to keep him down there.

If he developed a reliable jumper these last couple years, he could be a guy like Torrey Craig that just always manages to hang around the end of a rotation because he's a good defender and doesn't do dumb ****.

Yeah the Wolves have the minimum to give out and that's it, so whatever. I doubt he will play much, but in Connelly we trust.

Nah they looked great against Canada. I’m sure they’re still figuring out rotations.

Bronny's nowhere near being ready for the NBA. I don't think he ever will be.
This is my thinking exactly. I've seen nothing that makes me think he has what it takes to play in the league.

Remember those threads about could you run for 10 yards in an NFL game or score 10 points in an NFL game? Bronny is showing everyone that we can't.

He's so bad at basketball that he can't score 10 points in a football game!

I’m guessing they get him into a game with Bron early on in the year for the photo op and to say they played together and then he’s off to the G League for the year.

Wow, Bucks signed Gary Trent Jr for one year at the minimum. Another great minimum deal signing for them.
Milwaukee 3 vet min signings:
Gary Trent Jr
Delon Wright
Taurean Prince

That's about as good as a team could realistically be expected to do in vet min level free agency. Also makes the upside draft selections of AJ Johnson & Tyler Smith a lot more palatable.
