2024-25 NBA Thread: Thibs fired for not playing starters enough (94 Viewers)

Another good US game.
Gonna be an awesome tournament. Germany looks so meh on paper but has a real shot to win
Ya I'm not sure... they are playing well for sure. As of now, Germany has the 5th best odds to win the tourney, behind USA, Canada, France, Serbia.
Those odds are too low, I almost put that in my post. They’re not even really going after this game and they are still right there.

I actually expect Canada to underwhelm in the tournament for a lot of the same reasons that impact the US. Some of their odds should shift to Germany imo.

Who do you guys think would win in a USA vs rest-of-world all-star team? Seems the only advantage other countries have is them playing together/team chemistry, which they would of course lose if you threw together an all star team.
Assuming that you're talking about all other countries, not just the countries and players in the Olympics...the rest of the world arguably has a better starting lineup. Once you take the benches into account, I'd give the US an edge, but still would be a good game that I'd only expect us to win about 60% of the time.
I think you're drastically underrating the non-USA talent. The 60% feels correct, but The World would be the favorite.

Again they meet what I said the other day of team that has been playing together forever and surrounds a superstar (Franz ♥️) with complimentary talent.

The US is going to have to play much better in the Olympics than they have in the showcase games to win gold.

Defense: Way too many open 3's. Why doesn't this team switch everything? Drop coverage only leads to all these All-Stars worst tendencies as defenders. Lack of boxing out is also a problem.

Offense: Way too much one-on-one after slowly bringing the ball up. This squad needs to push the ball at every possible opportunity. No rest for the opposition, make them run all game long.

A little light on guards behind the top two, but holy **** this team would be huge

Guards - SGA, Murray
Wings - Giannis, Markkanen, OG, Siakam
Bigs - Jokic, Porzingis, Wemby, Gobert, Sabonis, Sengun
Luka?
I think he was leaving out Slovenia as they didn't make the olympics this year.
Umm yea, that's ummm, yea, definitely what I was doing
They really should do what hockey used to do and do USA vs the world at the next all star game. That would be so awesome compared to the awful game they currently play.

I don't remember when hockey did this, but I imagine the US would get smoked. Aren't only like 25% of NHL players from the US?

I don't know what Deamon is talking about. That'd be like Canada vs. The World in basketball.

It was north America vs the world and it seemed to always be fairly close.

Reggie is a good signing for us. Really like the way the roster is looking, let's see what Nick can do with it.

Reggie is a good signing for us.
Reggie Miller would have been better. Jackson is toast
not a bad depth guy :(

I feel like the whole team is made up of depth/bench guys other than Embiid, Maxey, and PG. Oubre and Martin are slightly above that I guess? But Gordon, Lowry, Reggie etc are bench guys really.
Yea, their top 3 is great obviously, but I can't imagine Oubre and Martin making up the 4th and 5th starter on a championship contender.

I haven't been paying that close attention to all the player movement in the off-season, but I keep hearing about how the Mavs got light years better with the guys they added. I'm just trying to decipher if that is actually accurate or not . . .

Klay:
- GS was 7.6 points better per 100 possessions last year when Thompson wasn't on the court.
- He had a -5 net rating last year and -7 the season before.
- The last time he was above .100 in WS/48 was the 2016-17 season.
- His PER scores the last two seasons were 13.9 and 14.7 (league average is 15.0).

Grimes:
- Shot 33.8% on 3PA last year.
- Only had an 8.9 PER (with a career average of 10.8).
- His WS/48 score was 0.60 in 2024 (with a career average of .091)
- Had a -7 net rating last season.

Marshall:
- Is a career 31.3% 3P shooter.
- Has a career PER of 11.9.
- Has a career WS/48 of .073.
- Has a career -4 net rating.

Dinwiddie:
- Had an 11.7 PER last year.
- Is a career 33.3% 3P shooter.
- Had a WS/48 of .081 last year (career at .103).

Bottom line, all of those guys were significantly below league average last year, and other than Klay, have been below average over the course of their careers. Maybe they will do better playing for DAL, and maybe they are upgrades over the guys that they are replacing on the roster, but I am not really sure any of them move the needle much. I think teams will have a field day offensively if Luka, Kyrie, and Klay are on the court at the same time. But that's why they play the games.

Only two of these teams make the top 6 and stay out of the play-in.

Two of these Teams don’t even make the play in, and half of these teams are in the lottery (assuming OKC, Min, Den, and Dal are all top 4).

A play in tournament between Suns, Lakers, Warriors, and Clippers would be insane.

If by insane you mean subpar teams with an aging superstar and poor supporting cast, then you are correct.

Representing 50% of the leagues luxury tax payments (Boston being the other 50%).

Hey, I wasn’t counting them out for the 5/6 spot in that scenario.

If those are your play in teams then Steph, Durant and LeBron are playing for bragging rights on who got to play 5 extra games. Kawhi wins since he will sit out 4 of the 5 games.

The Hawks total seemed way high to me at first. However, since their first goes to the Spurs unprotected, they don’t have any incentive to use tanking strategies. Still, though, I like the under.

First quick thoughts.

Laker and Clippers under.

I've been eyeing that Clippers under but I think there is a chance they add someone decent to the mix. Where the team stands currently, under for sure. Shame I can't get Houston at 30 again :kicksrock:

I'll take the over on the Sixers total with the thought that Embiid will play about 60 games this season, and when he's out they actually have a decent backup.
