2024 Cowboys Season Thread - We even suck at tanking. (2 Viewers)

Any other team, with any other owner, the GM would have been fired several times over.

It is like walking thru the park and watching a dog on the other side of a small river being abused by it's owner and there's nothing you can do about it.

There's just no way to win when the owner cares more about making money than winning.

Jerry Jones is a carnival barker.
Washington fans know this all too well during the Snyder hell years….I almost feel sorry for you Cowboys fans….almost ;)

Hate to break the news to you, but Josh Harris is another owner who cares more about the teams valuation than he does about winning.
I don’t really agree with this take on Jerry. He obviously wants to win, he’s just too arrogant to hire a real GM and give up control. If Jerry ONLY cared about valuation, he sure as **** wouldn’t have backed up the Brinks truck to pay Dak. Heck, if he only cared about valuation he would see he’s hurting his by being s control freak.

Dak isn’t selling tickets, not anymore. The team is a mess and not really close to contending. Should have let Dak test the open market, traded CeeDee who still can’t run a route, and blown it all up in favor of better years ahead. While I’m on the topic, trade Parsons for a 1st/plus and how does McCarthy still have a job?

Jerry is in over his head as a GM and talent evaluator and it’s getting worse with age. At least Al Davis was known for drafting speed, what’s Jerry known for?

And in the case of Harris, we don’t really know yet and who cares? As long as they’ve got guys like Daniels, it solves both problems.

You see this take on ownership but it misunderstands how ownership works.

Because of the salary cap and minimums, every owner is spending money. From a purely financial perspective you don't care whether $50 million of your $255 million salary cap goes to Dak or someone else. It's getting spent. You could give Dak a $200 million annual contract, doesn't mean anything in terms of team valuation.

Ironically, it seems the Jones's are actually quite cheap. Because what matters is not cap spending, which is mandated, but cash spending. I saw someone do an analysis of the Jones and show how they use the value of their Cowboys team to create leverage for other projects but actually spend very little (relatively) cash on the Cowboys. This is a big reason they push contracts to the last moment and then overpay.

Jerry is a terrible GM. But he's also a cheap owner. Just not in ways that are obvious. He's a carnival barker, all sizzle no steak.

That's what Harris is doing right now in Philly. He's using the Sixers and threatening to move to New Jersey, just to push a new stadium in the downtown area. His only goal is to keep the Sixers relevant enough to force the hand of politicians, who fear backlash from citizens. If the Sixers are bad that the team is drawing ~10,000 fans a night (like the did during Harris' process years), he has no leverage for the new stadium.
That stadium deal is done now

Let's take a moment and put a tiny bit of respect on Carolina's name courtesy of Dallas. Just won a game, Young has looked less like a complete disaster, their O line isn't awful, Legette looks decent, they get to see Brooks and now they pick up an extra fourth for nothing. Would you rather be a Cowboys fan or a Panthers fan this week?
Panthers. They have bottomed out. Will get better over time.

Dallas hasn’t hit rock bottom yet.

JJ might be worse than Tepper.

Yeah, it got done last month. The Sixers teams for the last couple years have been designed to be just good enough to draw fans and put leverage on the city.

I don't even know where they start to rebuild. Lines? CB? It's just so bleak. I guess you have your QB for the foreseeable future, but it's clear to me he can't elevate his team. He's not a puppy anymore, the book is out on Dak. If the team is good, he's a decent to good QB to pilot your squad. If the team is hurt or sub-par, he's not going to make the team better. This isn't Patty Mahomes. And you can't trade him, so he's your guy, Dallas.

Bleak.

Why wouldn't they trot Lance out there instead of Rush?

Dude, he's worse. I was all about Lance getting a shot but he is a walking turnover machine. At this point, there's nothing left to play for but future jobs and Cowboys are going to see if Rush is still their backup for the future.

Lance needs to head north and play for the Roughriders.

What are your guys' thoughts on Deion being the next head coach? He's the heavy favourite right now, and that would be interesting.

It's too bad Dak got resigned, because Dallas will probably be in a position to draft Shedeur too. Imagine Dieon and Shedeur together in Dallas, that would be wild.

I'd take it over another version of whatever this is. Not a cap guy but they could theoretically draft Sanders to be the QB of the future and let Dak play until they can afford to move on from him, whenever that is.

Dallas media and Deion have a very checkered past. He doesn't do well with media scrutiny and the old guard in Dallas will not be pushed over the way he has bullied college media in Boulder and beyond. He's a petulant man-child who can't take criticism and brother, Dallas/Fort Worth isn't a place that'll let him get away with that. Will it matter? Doubtful, he'll only have to answer to Jerry but it's going to be uncomfortable for sure.

But sure, sign me up for Sanders and Son. I can't take another season of Dak barfing up balls to the wrong team.

JJ is a spectacle seeking, attention obsessed man child. This could easily happen.

Jerry doubles down on the radio again. Calling the sun/lack of curtains a home field advantage.
When I read Jerry's first responses after last weeks game to questions regarding players ability to see at certain times due to sun glare....I thought they were highly defensive. Which I can understand, it hasn't been a good year and he's exasperated.

Still, his initial defensiveness had me curious.

I'm beginning to wonder if, when the developers were deciding how to place the stadium on the lot, Jerry made the final call. And, when the developers told him that sunlight would be a problem for players at times? He figured the visiting team would have to deal with it too, so, do it anyway.

Funny how it wasn't really an issue when they were winning......maybe the sun has moved?

Lance clearly has some incredible athletic skills but he’s not a quarterback.

ETA - my biggest takeaway was the decision to put him out there against a divisional opponent knowing where he was at in his development. Malpractice

No doubt. He should take his game up north though. NFL isn't forgiving and his confidence is shot. Go rebuild up there and maybe try again in 5 years. It's his only hope, TBH.

To expose how truly stupid Jerry is - here is our record with our “sun home field advantage”.

Cowboys are 29-29 at AT&T in afternoon games.

Cowboys are 48-25 in noon and evening games when the sun is not a factor.

That is a +23 game difference when we aren’t playing in Jerry’s sunbath.

I dont get why we just dont do window tint. It will still let the sun in for the cosmetics ( ), but our dainty, candle aficionado will be able to see the ball.

This is kind of where I was thinking about this too. My personal thought is he actually requested it to be exactly like this so it looks like a mausoleum or heaven or whatever when the sun is coming through those windows on Cowboys Game Day. Its been noted the stadium actually does cover the windows up for concerts and other venues, so it definitely seems to be a Jerry call specifically, which you tapped into, probably why he is so defensive about it.

It saves money on lighting the place. That's the reason.

I'm sure Jerry has trouble paying the light bill.

Forgot I'm supposed to use sarcasm tags. My bad.

Rumors swirling that Romo is replacing Mike as HC. That can't be true and yet, I feel as if Jerry is just insane enough to do it.
I’d like to think Romo isn’t dumb enough to do it

Guy has a charmed life right now. Making gazillions talking on TV, gets invites to pro-am golf tournaments, gorgeous wife who makes sneaker commercials with him....no chance he trades all that in to work under the heavy thumb of a man who is losing his mind at a rapid rate.

Exactly

Funny about the clown title.

Reminds me of the end of the Ralph Wilson era in Buffalo. He had no idea what he was doing. Even he knew that he shouldn’t be GM (although he did hire 80 year old Marv Levy to do it 😂).

So if this plays out like that did you have 15 years of missing the playoffs to look forward to.

This Cowboys team is tough to watch. Just not the same as years past.
McCarthy needs to hand over calling plays. He isn't focused on game situation cause staring at his playbook. Illegal motion penalty is an example of this result.
The oline in the trenches are losing matchups. They are getting pushed backwards in run and pass formations.
Dak will be 32. Coming off multiple leg surgeries. If he is to be a "stand in pocket" passer until 2028 (when his contract expires) there has to be better protection up front, more quick passes out of the snap, create a better running game, and a dedication to slot/HB dump offs. All they have on the roster are downfield WRs.

This current product is worrisome. Offseason moves has to be made.
