2024 Cowboys Season Thread - We even suck at tanking. (1 Viewer)

Rumor is that they're laying down for Arch Manning. This year is over, so have to think they'll try and rebuild the lines in this draft then hope they're in play for Arch in '26. Raiders would probably be dumb enough to take Dak off their hands.
Ha, they don't have a choice. They're not laying down for anything; they just suck and can't win and they are trying to win. Is Arch Manning even eligible to be drafted in the 2025 NFL draft?

Hopkins = 5th
We traded away Amari Cooper for a 5th.

Mingo who cannot crack the line up of Carolina is a 4th???

I would love to be Dallas Media for 1 day so I could ask these losers what the H E double hockey sticks they think they are doing.

I also beg any Cowboys friends, please stop going to the games. Please stop buying merch. Please stop helping enabling this utter joke of a franchise.

No, which is why I used '26 above.

Let's take a moment and put a tiny bit of respect on Carolina's name courtesy of Dallas. Just won a game, Young has looked less like a complete disaster, their O line isn't awful, Legette looks decent, they get to see Brooks and now they pick up an extra fourth for nothing. Would you rather be a Cowboys fan or a Panthers fan this week?

Cowboys. I hate Carolina.

Gonna be an early 4th too. And it becomes harder to chalk Mingo's struggles up to the Carolina stink when they have 2 rookies at least showing something.

But to answer your question, much better to be Cowboys fan. Tepper is a lot younger than Jones. Becoming a Panthers fan now is like becoming a Cowboys fan 25 years ago.

So, my buddies and I went to Vegas. We decided to visit many casino’s to see the sights.

One of my buddies, decided that he was going to gamble $1000.

We hit casino 1, and he walks up to a Roulette Table, and bets his entire stack (all on black). Wins!!! He then with discipline does not place any bets while the other guys play various slots and tables.

Hit casino 2. Again, my buddy walks directly to another Roulette table. Again, bets everything (including winnings) on black. Wins again!!!! We are loving it. Going nuts. He again with discipline does not bet anything else while the rest of us blow a hundred here, a hundred there.

We hit casino 3. Like clockwork. Buddy does the same. Giant stack - all on black.
He hits it again!!!!!! Stays disciplined and watches us play poker for a couple hours. Omgzzzzzz windfall!!!!

As a group, we decide to go to one more casino to close the night off in style. Buddy makes the bee-line to the roulette table. He puts it all on black again. It came up……RED. Buzz kill for the night, right??? We hit the bar after and drown our sorrows as we prepare to fly home the next day.

The mood and vibe at breakfast is still down. Buddy couldn’t really afford that $1000 and the group all knew it. He had a nice streak and had all that money - only to ultimately lose it.

15 mins before heading to the airport, our friend is not around - can’t find him. Crap!!!

We find him a few mins later at the ATM cash advancing his credit card for another $1000. He says he’s going to make one more bet. We all beg him to not do it. Be smart man. Nope. He’s determined to press on. Walks in, drops the stack on black. We wait, and wait and wait. RED!!!!!

No!!!!!!! You idiot. Your wife is going kill you dude.

The point of this story is that final bet - is exactly what Jerry Jones did yesterday.

Except Jerry doesn't have to answer to a wife. His or anybody else's. He doesn't answer to anybody. That's the problem. That's been the problem for 30 years. Were it not for Jimmy Johnson, I shudder to think what any of this looks like for Dallas.

There's just no way to win when the owner cares more about making money than winning.

Jerry Jones is a carnival barker.
Washington fans know this all too well during the Snyder hell years….I almost feel sorry for you Cowboys fans….almost ;)

Hate to break the news to you, but Josh Harris is another owner who cares more about the teams valuation than he does about winning.
I don’t really agree with this take on Jerry. He obviously wants to win, he’s just too arrogant to hire a real GM and give up control. If Jerry ONLY cared about valuation, he sure as **** wouldn’t have backed up the Brinks truck to pay Dak. Heck, if he only cared about valuation he would see he’s hurting his by being s control freak.

Dak isn’t selling tickets, not anymore. The team is a mess and not really close to contending. Should have let Dak test the open market, traded CeeDee who still can’t run a route, and blown it all up in favor of better years ahead. While I’m on the topic, trade Parsons for a 1st/plus and how does McCarthy still have a job?

Jerry is in over his head as a GM and talent evaluator and it’s getting worse with age. At least Al Davis was known for drafting speed, what’s Jerry known for?

And in the case of Harris, we don’t really know yet and who cares? As long as they’ve got guys like Daniels, it solves both problems.

You see this take on ownership but it misunderstands how ownership works.

Because of the salary cap and minimums, every owner is spending money. From a purely financial perspective you don't care whether $50 million of your $255 million salary cap goes to Dak or someone else. It's getting spent. You could give Dak a $200 million annual contract, doesn't mean anything in terms of team valuation.

Ironically, it seems the Jones's are actually quite cheap. Because what matters is not cap spending, which is mandated, but cash spending. I saw someone do an analysis of the Jones and show how they use the value of their Cowboys team to create leverage for other projects but actually spend very little (relatively) cash on the Cowboys. This is a big reason they push contracts to the last moment and then overpay.

Jerry is a terrible GM. But he's also a cheap owner. Just not in ways that are obvious. He's a carnival barker, all sizzle no steak.

But it does matter. If it didn't, all franchises would be valued equally, yet we see discrepancies from large to small markets, but more applicable, discrepancies within large markets, within small markets, and everywhere in between. Good teams sell tickets. Stars sell tickets. Starts bring fans. Fans bring directly and indirectly bring in revenue that is not shared between all 32.

The Dallas Cowboys valuation will undoubtedly suffer if the losing continues. And guess what? It will, mostly because of the terrible panic contract given to Dak.

I do agree Jerry is a terrible GM, but I believe that leads to his terrible decisions, not because he's cheap. Jon Mingo for a 4th? Really?

Look at the NFL list of valuations: https://www.cnbc.com/2024/09/05/official-nfl-team-valuations-2024.html

It's almost entirely location. The Cowboys haven't won a divisional playoff game even since 1995. They have been, from an on-field perspective, a bottom 16 team (at least) over that time.

What do those valuations have to do with winning? There is almost no relationship.

NFL Network’s Jane Slater reports Dak Prescott’s “initial diagnosis is a partial avulsion of his hamstring tendon which is partially torn off the bone.”

Slater also reports that her sources told her “it typically takes more than a 4 week recovery. In some cases, they let it scar over, repair and then strengthen. With that being said, Prescott is seeking other opinions which is why there is currently a reluctance to place him on IR or make any determinations about a timeline for return.” An avulsion injury is far more serious than a typical strain. Fantasy managers should prudently move on from Prescott at this time

1. I hope that story isn't true

2. For a good comparison to Jerry Jones, the bet would be $10. Jerry isn't gambling with money he doesn't have. His team is worth billions no matter how many games they win. If the Cowboys totally flop on a trade, it hurts the fans more than anything.

That's what Harris is doing right now in Philly. He's using the Sixers and threatening to move to New Jersey, just to push a new stadium in the downtown area. His only goal is to keep the Sixers relevant enough to force the hand of politicians, who fear backlash from citizens. If the Sixers are bad that the team is drawing ~10,000 fans a night (like the did during Harris' process years), he has no leverage for the new stadium.

you can turn it around fast but its hard to see success for the next 2 years or so

The tank is on.
Top 5 pick

Only to draft a WR.
Or RB. That’s always an option too.

I keep seeing Jeanty mocked to Dallas.
2nd round i would be ecstatic. Top 5-10 pick? You would think Jerry has learned his lesson, but it’s Jerry…
Unfortunately, ego doesn't learn lessons. It learns who is at fault instead of themselves.
