2024 New Music Thread (2 Viewers)

Missed this album, I like this band. Thanks!

P.S. new Frank Turner album dropped on Friday. I like it, but it seems kinda like an industry-meta album that I do not really get
Back atcha! Wasn't aware Frank Turner had released anything.

I just started listening to it and really like the 1st song. Hope the rest is just as good.

The Upsides - Context

New York rockers with a jangly guitar banger and some cracking vocals.

Lazy Dingo - Younger

Fun jangle pop from Melbourne Australia. Similar to Daffodils from New Zealand and the UK's Covasettes.

The soundtrack album from I Saw the TV Glow is a nice sampler of current Indie acts. The songs share a kind of retro 90s vibe so they hang together pretty well as an album. Each artist was long gone before I got tired of their sound which seems to happen a lot with new music.

I was especially partial to "If I Could" by Jay Som which sounds like Juliana Hatfield fronting Teenage Fanclub.

Two Weeks In Nashville - Days Like These

UK Indie Country Rock, Alt Country duo who discovered their sound/identity on a writing trip to Nashville.

Cornelius "サウナ好きすぎ、より深く / Too Much Love For Sauna (Falling Deep)"

The spacey sound before (and under) the vocals reminds me of an atmospheric jazz/fusion from the '70s.
Thinking of Pat Metheny, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Jon-Luc Ponty kind of stuff.

d4vd - My House is Not A Home (Live Performance)

🎶
But you never really cared about
The way that everything turned out
You didn't wanna fall in love
You're looking out for yourself now
🎶

Singer and songwriter d4vd (pronounced "David") is known for his moody bedroom-style Indie Pop and R&B.

I’ve been enjoying Australian band Girl and Girl’s album Call a Doctor that came out last week. They have been on my radar since @kupcho1 picked a song of theirs in the year-end draft.

Nothing earth-shattering original, but it’s just one infectious indie rock/pop song after another. It has a mental health theme and, to be sure, that theme seems overdone but they do it in such a fun way.

I get a kick out of the fact that band is made up of three young dudes and the lead singer’s middle-age aunt.

Anyways, here’s a sample:

Devin Kennedy - Star Crossed

🎶 We're too good to be true, me and you
We're just star-crossed lovers wishing on the moon🎶

Some info on the artist:

"Devin Kennedy is an in-demand singer/songwriter and producer from Los Angeles, CA, who invites intimacy through his handcrafted hybrid of alternative and R&B."

This tune is however, rather Pop-ish and Yacht Rock-ish (which is good or bad depending on your point of view).

Anyone have thoughts on the new Rainbow Kitten Surprise album? I had pretty high hopes for this one, but they changed their sound a bit more than I was expecting. Plus... all sorts of drama sounding the band lately has had me generally down on them.

Spotify has been bogarting that ****.

What I know about them, shouldn't we expect them to change their sound regularly?

The Gluts - BANG!

Wow, they are spinning this vinyl at this brewery. Just came out last week and ****ing rules.

‘Bang!’ is the fifth studio album from the Milan-based band. “Like the sound of a single gunshot, straight to the heart”, the record is balanced between punchy, fast-paced punk songs and noisy experimentalism, perfectly distilling the strength and energy of their notoriously wild, feedback-blasted live shows

Small Black Arrows – Trojan Horse 🐴

🎶 Love of course, is a Trojan Horse 🎶

Mesmerizing soulful funky electropop from a UK duo.

Yes it is. Here is the artist discussing concept and title of that tune and The British Museum song and album.

Balu Brigada - So Cold

New Zealand Alt Pop Duo now based in NYC.

"If The Strokes, Daft Punk, Parcels and Tame Impala were to have a child, they would name it Balu Brigada"

Bobby Oroza - Goddess

The latest from Finland's best soul singer (which is something like being the tallest Munchkin in Oz).

Lake Street Dive - Dance With A Stranger (LIVE on The Late Show)

This band is always so much fun to see.

Song inspired by a square dance.

Omar Apollo - Done With You

I'm so done with you
done with you
done with you
done with you
done

Mei Ehara - まだ早い果物 The Fruit Not Yet Ripe

Funky, mellow and hypnotic, R&B flavored JPop

grentperez and Lyn Lapid - Room For You

🎶 When the odds of it all get in the way
Know I'll be around when you call at the end of the day
Even if the world around it feels like it's all falling apart
There'll forever be a room for you inside of my heart
It's true, there's always room for you 🎶

Grent Perez is a Filipino-Australian Indie Pop singer songwriter.

Giant Rooks - Pink Skies (Live German TV 2024)

🎶 I'm lost every time our eyes cross
Singin' "Love me do"
Maybe we're just livin' for this moment
Like it's 1962🎶

Studio version:

I read an interview with lead vocalist Wes Leavins, who said that The Smiths were a big influence on him along with Roy Orbison (which is obvious here).

New Jack White rocks on first listen. By any meaning of the word.

My favorite thing he's done in like 15 years (going back to Icky Thump or Consoles of the Lonely)
Yeah just listening again for the 2nd time alot more closely than the first. It's really really really good.
The Music Man inspired tune is really cool. Very original despite obviously being a spin on Ya Got Trouble.

Digging this a lot

I thought I’d leave this one to Eephus, but X has a new one out. Smoke and Fiction is its name.

Eephus is the bigger fan and personally invested. I like the band. A lot more as the years go by.

They seem to be in fine form here.

I was trying to think of a word to describe their love songs (as inspired by their first two songs off of this album) and it was “apocalyptic.” Here Exene chooses one of her favorite X songs in this interview and the interviewer calls it just that. “Apocalyptic,” the interviewer says, and ever-interesting, Exene describes why she likes it.

_________________________________________________________________

BEST FIT: Your first choice is the closing track from Los Angeles, and it’s a song that has been described as absurdist, apocalyptic, and as one of the greatest punk love songs of all time. What does it mean to you?

Exene Cervenka: The other thing I like about “The World’s a Mess; It’s in My Kiss” is that it was the first song I wrote where I’d had the ambition to combine a lot of different things. I was writing about the bigger picture – “the world’s a mess,” which is about as big as you can get – and combined it with something more personal – “it’s in my kiss,” which was also a nod to “The Shoop Shoop Song” and the history of rock and roll. There’s a baseball reference in there too, and I feel like the line I wrote “Dirty night dying like a lovely wife” foreshadowed the death of my sister, which is weird. So, yeah, it is kind of a surrealist song, but I chose it because I feel like it was the first time I had a real, kind of developed sense of songwriting, with lyrics that were sort of combining aspects of all the writing I’d been doing since I was young.

____________________________________________________

Anyway, here’s a new track. I chose it because it’s the one that grabbed me right off the bat. I love Exene/John’s vocal overlap that happens right away at the end of the first line. “Ruby Church.” Oh my. When Exene comes in with “Ruby Church,” at the end of that first aforementioned line, it induces chills (in me, anyway).

eta* Well, it’s not necessarily about love, but it is about grace and redemption, which are huge, and “a lonely state of grace” sounds rather bleak but alternatively hopeful, doesn’t it?

The new album by Swami John Reis (from Hot Snakes/Rocket from the Crypt) - All of This Awaits You is really great. It will probably be one my favorites of the year.
