2024 New Music Thread (1 Viewer)

Oh, that did sound like Weezer.

Here’s a dance track from 2024. The resident Spotty critic said she was influenced by Title Fight and American Football, and I think he or she might be reaching a bit.

Their name is daine (I can’t put a period there because it might be part of their name). So that parenthetical served its purpose. Modern Typography! That’s my new band name.

I'm going to Denver for the Steelers/Broncos in September. I try to make a road game every year and always schedule a few extra days to just kind of explore the city a little. I was looking to see if there was anything I might want to do around my hotel and saw a music venue where a British band called Good Neighbours was playing. I never heard of them so looked them up - looks like they're new and I kind of dug the songs they have out and might check them out. I searched this thread and didn't see them posted yet. Figured I'd share:

Keep it Up

Home

Pretty light and upbeat.

They're playing about six blocks from me on Sep 12

Nice! The show I might attend is the 14th. Check in if you go, por favor.

I doubt I'll see them here but you should definitely go. Out of town shows are the best (unless the venue sucks).

Yeah. Last year I went to the Steelers game in Seattle and caught mxpx there. Ruled.

I'm going to Detroit Labour Day weekend for a Tigers game on the Saturday and have successfully convinced my buddies we should go to Gaslight Anthem/Joyce Manor on the Sunday night while we're there.

I like both those tracks

100 Watt Robot - Zero Gravity

Zero Gravity
Round and round
Nothin holding us down
in Zero Gravity
Everybody get up!
Everybody get down! 🕺💃

Yeah... Not schtick, and hopefully you know me enough to know I like Weezer, so the comp wasn't negative. First single had a Arcade Fire gone dance vibe, 2nd tune had a yuck punch me in the nads Coldplay feel.

Their 3 new songs are kind of all over the place and different sounding than what they've done before. But I'm realizing I'm overall liking and appreciating this new direction... And together the songs feel cohesive somehow, despite all over the place and my own disparate references for them.

I didn’t think so immediately after the song began. I sort of knew you were being serious after that.

I did not know you had an affinity for Weezer, Flop. Learn something new every day . . .

Lol... You didn't remember. We've discussed those first couple albums before. Why I remember that when I remember so very little... Not sure.

Btw... Have you heard of Fontaines DC? Solid new Irish band. Give them a listen.

Geloomy - Black Cinema

4 piece Japanese JPop JRock band that describes itself as "Neo Disco".

Definite Nile Rodgers influence with a touch of Prince funk.

I like the debut album from Wishy. They're a three guitar band from that Shoegaze hotbed of Indianapolis with a retro 90s sound that always seems to go over well on this board. They have a pair of singer/songwriters (a girl and a boy) that breaks things up a little and gives the album more variety than I usually hear from young bands.

Jake Bugg - Keep on Moving

Delicious retro 60's Mersey Beat and 70's Power Pop, with a dash of Motown.

Wow.. Jake Bugg. Feel like he was going to be the next big thing whenever first came out... Haven't heard him or about him since until this post.

Yeah, I am not sure what happened, as he got a huge buzz in music circles and then nothing that got any attention after that.

I was looking forward to this release and it was better than I expected.

He was interviewed recently by NME where he talks about this single and his upcoming Green Day influenced LP.

Black midi is/was my favorite band of the last decade releasing three fantastic albums. It was announced last week that they broke up or, at least, are on an indefinite hiatus.

However their frontman, Geordie Greep, officially announced his solo debut today and released the track "Holy, Holy". To be sure, Greep and black midi can be an acquired taste, but this song is an excellent tease for the album. One of the things I like most about Greep of late is his lyrics -- especially his story telling, his character development (normally of flawed characters), and his sense of humor. These are evident in this song and I'm really looking forward to more of this when the album comes out.

I have no idea why that YouTube link is in German.

The Beaches - Takes One To Know One

🎶God, you're a piece of work
Oh, it takes one to know one🎶

Fun jangly summer pop anthem from Toronto girl group that is huge in Canada (11 Top ten hits on Canadian rock charts).

They had one success here with Blame Brett from last year, #33 US Billboard Hot 100.

It's strange seeing them blow up elsewhere now when they've been around so long.

Incidentally, my favorite song by them may be "Blow Up"

Thanks. Great tune. I hadn't heard that before.

Here is a live version I like a little better:

The Linda Lindas - All In My Head

All female, all teen, Power Pop, Garage Rock, Post Punk band from L.A.

Nice to see Pitchfork reviewing this song and giving it a “best new track” tag. I’ve listened to this song about 100 times since Tuesday. So terrific!

Travis - Raze The Bar

With Chris Martin of Coldplay and Brandon Flowers of The Killers.

Gossip - Real Power

80's Dance Club music vibes. Beth Ditto has a powerful voice.

From YouTube comments:

"Big Blondie vibes from the bells, basslines, and guitar of this track. Love how this video gets across the energy felt in a club show. I'm guessing that this didn't need much stage direction because the excitement is REAL!"

Orville Peck & Kylie Minogue & Diplo - Midnight Ride

Orville Peck and Kylie Minogue oddly describe this collaboration as a "Disco County song" (?)

Not sure about that, but it is a danceable fun pop tune.

Custard - Molecules Colliding

Aussie Indie Rock band from Brisbane, Queensland. New single release with brilliant Lo-Fi animated music video.

Lead vocals remind me of Al Stewart.

Moonlight Parade - Better Days

🎶So make your mind up
Stand and deliver🎶

UK indie pop band with another good tune that has a great bass line and keys.

From their new album Strange Times to be released in October.

Arkayla - Lost In A Valentine

"Youthful yet nostalgic vibes led by glittering guitars, energetic drums, groovy baselines and passionate vocal lines."

Manchester UK band with a jangly summer banger.

luv - Jamlady

Japanese band self described as "Neo Disco" (whatever that is).

"Retro Nile Rodgers, Chic and stylish feel is just right and so cool"

The Peawees & The Detroit Cobras - You'll Never Be Mine Again

Retro something, reminds me of Mink DeVille. Some responses have been it is like Cage The Elephant.

The Sheepdogs - Take Me for a Ride

"In a parallel universe, we've been hearing this song on AM radio for the past 50 years"

Wallows – Calling After Me (Jimmy Kimmel Live 2024)

A catchy and quick fun bop that has gotten over 47 million Spotify streams.

L.A. based alternative band with Dylan Minnette on lead vocals here.

Yannis & The Yaw is a one-off collaborative EP with the singer of Foals and the legendary drummer Tony Allen. The opening track got a lot of positive feedback in the midterm music draft.

Unfortunately, it's only a five song EP because Allen passed away before they could record more material

New Fidlar has been in my garage sweet spot.

Chilly Gonzalez new stuff is a reversion to his low fi hip hop brand.. new singles have been fun.

Omg... New Stiff Richards single is out!

Lots of good stuff finally on my RR... Looking forward to it for the first time in a while.

New Illuminati Hotties is all rippers

New Charly Bliss did not live up to my personal hype, but it is growing on me.... I like it better as an album than I did as the singles were released.

New Illuminati Hotties is all rippers
I was in the pet store where they're (20 something women) always playing music... Good poppy rocking woman artist was on- I knew the tune but couldn't place it. Who is this? Guess! Illuminati Hotties? Giggling laughter. No... Really. More giggling laughter. No... Really- they exist. More giggling laughter.

Then I realized it was an Olivia Rodrigo tune and kinda felt bad for the comp.

Mercury Rev has a new album where the singer talks in a whisper over ornate musical arrangements.

Ty Segall has a new album that's only him playing percussion instruments. Oh yeah, it's a concept album.

Tys album has me very interested (as a percussionists dad) and very confused.

Mercury rev...wow, not a name I've thought about in a long time. Maybe the singer lost his voice?

I have a soft spot for the bands coming out of the London post-punk scene these days. To be honest, though, the sound strays quite a bit from its post-punk roots.

I'm really digging the debut album from Fat Dog. Such cool energy! They already have a cultish fanbase. It kind of has mix reviews and it probably one of those either love it or hate it albums. NME gave it five stars though.

Sample song "Wither":

Room Two - Weight In Gold

Catchy Blues Rock tune from 4 piece Liverpool England band with some nice harmonica work.

We're going to see them next month. I'm not a huge fan of their record but their live show looks like a hoot. The drummer must get really hot under the rubber dog mask.

Brigitte Calls Me Baby - Too Easy

Brigitte Calls Me Baby Air New Single “Too Easy”

Chicago-based indie/alternative band Brigitte Calls Me Baby have aired their new single “Too Easy”.

The track features on their upcoming debut album ‘The Future Is Our Way Out’, set to arrive this Friday, August 2 via ATO. Pre-order your copy here.

“On “Too Easy,” the band slips into a moment of new-wave majesty built on skittering guitar tones and darkly throbbing beats, with Leavins’ voice taking on a near-operatic grandeur as he questions the reliability of memory and the durability of love.”

They just came out with the official video and I am even more impressed with this song and the band.

Lead singer Wes Leavins has said that Roy Orbison was a big influence on him and you certainly hear it at times in his delivery.
