2024 New York Football Giants (hello darkness my old friend) (1 Viewer)

Really enjoyed episode 1 off-season Hard Knocks, though there was some really good nuggets of info.

Can't say I came away very impressed with Schoen. That's just in general, just nothing dynamic about his thought process that stood out to me. Just a guy who worked in the league long enough and knew enough people to rise up the ranks was the feeling I got.

But specifically some things:

Could tell he was ready to move on from Barkley. That's fine, but he said several times about the RB FA class having depth and to be patient with it. Then he signs Singletary the day after Barkley left. So much for patience especially when most were a little surprised what Singletary got. Not a huge amount of money but basically guaranteeing him $11.5M for the next two seasons. You see a team like the Steelers not want to commit a single year for Najee for $7M. A comparable quality player IMO in Zach Moss get about 70% for this first two years, but with less guaranteed that can turn that into a $4.5M one year deal. Singletary himself played last year for just over $3M. That hardly seemed like patience to me giving him what they did.

Secondly he said several times, because he's one of the people who chose to pay Daniel Jones, that his money made it where they were counting on him to play well and needed to surround him with a better RB and OL. Singletary was the best you could do? And his answers to the OL issues are Jermaine Elumenor and Jon Runyan. Granted those two were not high ticket costs but he spends all that time in meetings talking about the need for Jones to play well, that in order for him to do that he needed a good RB and to improve an OL he says Mahomes could not have done well and losing Barkley while netting Singletary and those two OL are his answers to the two major things he said Jones needed?

Mentioned Waller as a key piece to help Jones at one point. So much for that.

And Daboll did not get a lot of air time, and I sure hope there was a lot more nuance and context that was edited out, but him pulling Schoen into his office, putting his phone in his face while he read him stats from the DC he wanted to hire sure seemed like amatueur hour. Looked like two Footballguys having a debate.

Just got done watching myself. Schoen was ready to move on from Barkley but it seemed like everyone else in the room (and Mara) wanted him back. I agree with the thought process, about not spending money on a RB. But if you're going to spend the entire episode talking about the OL don't draft a WR at #6.

But in the episode besides o linemen he did say they needed a corner,a rusher and a receiver. Clearly Nabors was the best player at #6 that fit one of those positions.

Didn't watch. But yes. What I've read is the Schoen understands that the OL is killing the team. But putting bandaids on it ain't going to fix it. Finding studs will. And it if takes multiple picks, so be it. The killer quote was "Mahomes couldn't win behind the line." He is right. Heck, you make a Frankenstein QB on all the best parts of all the best QBs that have ever played and they still couldn't win behind that thing. Until it gets fixed, it doesn't matter who is playing any other position. I refuse to get excited over anybody until the line can play better than I could (read embarrassed, slow, unable to touch a rusher and routinely keistered).

It looks like they went after Brian Burns instead of Christian Wilkins based on poor information. One of the scouts said Wilkins wasn’t much a factor on 3rd down.

Turns out Wilkins was tied for #2 interior DL in 3rd down pressures.
Obviously, Wilkins and Burns are different players but they both received similar contracts this offseason.
CW 4 years – 110 M (27.5M avg/yr)
BB 5 years – 141M (28.2 M avg/yr)

Wilkins wouldn’t have cost any draft picks though

They're 2 totally different players. Burns is an edge rusher that you can drop into coverage. He's 3 years younger so you're paying for what should be his prime years. Plus, he's been a much more consistent rusher over a longer period. It's certainly possible that Wilkins will be more productive over the next 4 years, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Hard to pass on Nabers since the Giant WRs are ranked as low as the Oline. But they certainly could have taken a Guard or 2 ...
Round 3, No. 70 - Dru Phillips, CB, Kentucky (Beebe and Haynes were available)
Round 4, No. 107 - Theo Johnson, TE, Penn State

It's a good point but it would hurt to pay $60M a year for 2 IDLs
I think Burns is a backup in case Thibodeaux busts ... which to me is not out of the question

I’m not saying the decision was right or wrong, just pointing out that (based on the editing) the decision on Burns/Wilkins seemed to be made based on incorrect information. Or at least heavily influenced by that misinformation.

I’m aware that they are different players, that’s why I mentioned it in my post.

I think (hope) Burns will be more productive over the next four years too, but the comparison isn’t Burns vs Wilkins. The comparison is Burns vs Wilkins + 2nd round pick (39 overall).
Of course, there is no real way to evaluate the comparison because we have no idea who the Giants would have taken.

The Giants seem to still be in need of a CB, picks 40, 41, and 42 were all CB.

Nabers seems like the real deal as a WR but how much are his surroundings going to hold him back? QB and OL both seem very shaky for a guy going as high as he is.

Yeah. I thought Schoen looked pretty bad in that entire Barkley convo.

speaking of Hard Knocks ... the discussions involving Schoen talking about Saquon were peak comedy:

speaking of ...

I've said this every year since he was drafted

It's Funny most people trashed the Giants for going against the unwritten rule and taking a RB with the 2nd pick in the draft?
Now 7 years later, after multiple injuries and coming off the worst season of his career ... they think the Giants should once again should go against the unwritten rule and pay a 27 year old RB top dollar because now the Giants don't have an identity ???

Giants are coming off one of the worst offensive seasons in NFL history ... Is that the identity we want??

I would bet a lot of money the Giants have a better offense this year than last year.

While I agree with you, you aren't exactly going out on a limb with that declaration 🤣🤣

But everything previous to that is spot on imop

As Giants fans we seem to always accentuate the negative and not believe the positive.
I'm just putting this out there to try to throw a little positivity on the preseason chatter.
From a personal one on one conversation I had recently with a member of the Giants defensive line,no bs here he's a friend of my son.
He said...The feeling in camp this year is different, the new coaches are stressing fundamentals like never before. The defense will give us more freedom on the field.
Our defense is going to be much better this year. Last year there were issues between Wink and Coach Dabs. It affected everyone on the D. Winks ego got in the way
and in my opinion really hurt us. We're going to be very good this year. I am very excited this year to see our defense in action. We're going to surprise a lot of people.
Our offensive line is much better than last year. Of course we miss Saquan,he was a great teamate, but the offense this year will spread the ball around much more, and
Malik is an absolute stud. He's a rookie and going to learn a lot this year, but he's going to be special, trust me.
Just wanted to put that out there

This is really cool to read.
The secondary has me worried. They are pretty young back there. I’m excited about the front seven though.
On offense, I just hope the offensive line is finally decent.
I wish they re-signed Tyrod instead of Lock simply because Tyrod wouldn’t be learning a new system if DJ isn’t ready to start the season.

In my opinion, unless we are talking about an obvious playoff team ... I'd always prefer a backup QB with higher upside over a, hold down the fort veteran like Tyrod .
Tyrod is what he is, a good backup. He's not going to get any better and he's injury prone.
Lock has some serious arm talent and with the right coaching could excel if Jones were to go down

If the team isn’t a playoff contender, what’s the upside with Lock?

He signed a one-year deal with the Giants, If he reaches said upside do you expect the Giants to be able to resign him?

Denver has been as bad a train wreck as the Giants

They may be a playoff contender but certainly not an obvious one. I think the success of the Giants is totally dependent on Very Good QB play
I think Jones and Lock have the tools to play very good ... I think Tyrod has proven that at his best his only Good which would be fine if the Giants were loaded
If Jones was Injured and Lock played great and lead the Giants to the Playoffs ... maybe they resign him and let DJ walk

I'd have Benson higher than Saquon ...
I can see Nicks over Saquon too. His Superbowl run was insane!

There's a lot of negative with this team. :lmao:

I mean, I hope Evan Neal bounces back and the line solidifies this year, but a lot of questions marks with some of the deals/coaching decisions in the offseason. What is the offensive plan for this year? How is the interaction going to be between Kakfa and Daboll, which admittedly was not good during the end of the year?

Giants GM confirms there was trade interest with Patriots for No. 3 pick in draft, presumably for Drake Maye

The Giants reportedly offered their 2024 first-round pick (No. 6) and their 2025 first-round pick for the No. 3 overall pick, but the Patriots turned it down. New England ended up selecting Maye while New York stood pat and selected Malik Nabers at No. 6 overall.

I thought that was well-known. Giants were beating down the door to try and get Drake Maye but New England would only say yes to a fleece offer (3-4 picks in the Top 3 rounds), they wanted to see how desperate the Giants were.

I still Believe !!!!!

NY Giants QB Daniel Jones is looking pretty jacked in new workout video

The Giants never really seemed interested in keeping him. But I also get the feeling Barkley didn't seem interested in staying with a team that wasn't a contender.

Schoen seemed hurt or upset that Barkley didn’t take the deals offered in 22 & 23, which was about the same or maybe even better in overall value than what he signed with the Eagles.

The biggest knocks on Saquon Barkley are that:

a) His X-factor healing didn't translate to him being 100% football ready 2-3 years ago.
b) he couldn't single-handedly carry a terrible QB with a terrible O-Line for more than 1 year.

...

I mean yeah, that's it. He never got in any off the field incidents and was the consummate team leader on some bad teams. As far as ambassadorship goes, he did a good job bridging the Manning years.

At least Saquon had that excuse ...
Jones on the other hand played behind a great Oline with great surrounding weapons ... Oh wait ...same team

Giants hosting free agent guard Greg Van Roten today.

He played for the Raiders last season. His PFF grade was 75.3. He is 34 years old
