2025-26 NBA Thread: manager at job site annoyed Kawhi hasn't shown up again (3 Viewers)

Nice work @Kev4029 on those lists. I agree with a lot, disagree with some—but give props for all of the work and effort. If I had to pick the one player that I disagree the most with—it would be Darius garland ranked at 18. He’s nowhere near that imo. You have him in the same tier with guys like Anthony Davis, Lebron James, Donovan Mitchell, Devin Booker, Kawhi Leonard, Paolo, and Kevin Durant? You have 3 Cavs players in the top 18? If Darius Garland is the 18th best player in the league—and Donovan Mitchell (who you have ranked at 13–which actually feels low), and Mobley (who I think is great, but nowhere near the 7th best player as you ranked him)—how many games are you projecting the Cavs to win this year—70? Darius Garland is a third or fourth best option on a championship caliber team at best—-he’s not a top 20 player. Evan Mobley is at best a second option on a championship caliber team—he’s nowhere near a top 7 player in the league. I would have Mobley somewhere in the 20-30 range, and would have Garland ranked in the 40’s or 50’s. If you replaced him with any of the guards in that range—Bane, Reeves, Derrick White, Herro—I would argue that the Cavs would not see a drop off—and in three of those cases could arguably be a better team.

Lamelo :style:

The circa 2000s Britney Spears and Juicy Couture comments gave me a laugh

Great stuff @Kev4029 - can’t even argue with many of those.
Apparently someone doesn't remember the title of his own thread. Consider this me reporting for duty sir.

That list did put it in more stark terms that Denver vs OKC is really the matchup and that players 15 to 40 are a jumbled mess. Booker at 15 seemed like a joke to me until I read through the rest of it. I'd probably have Jalen at the top of that list, but there certainly isn't much difference between a lot of those guys.

What are guys like Grimes waiting for at this point?
More money.
But it isn't really out there now, right?
An offer isn’t coming from another team. I haven’t read about sign-and-trades for him and those rules are tricky. But the Sixers could offer more.

I don’t think we’ll see anything happen with any of the 4 RFAs until training camp is about to start.
It’s basically a dance between which side is less interested in the player taking the qualifying offer. It’s not very good for either side , but in some ways worse for the team. The player gets a no trade if they take the qualifying offer and of course becomes a UFA. So that’s the leverage for the player, though they will invariably get less guaranteed money. So will the player or team blink first?

Are the Sixers going to run out there with 3 guards, George at PF and Embiid at C (assuming all healthy)? Maxey, VJ, McCain, Oubre, Grimes, Lowry, Gordon -- maybe a sign and trade of Grimes now is the move, but not sure how feasible that is?

Are there any other teams even interested in Grimes? I haven't closely monitored the situation but I haven't seen anything about other teams having interest either.

Philly, GS, Chicago, and Brooklyn just need to do a 4-way swap of their RFA guys - Grimes to GS, Thomas to Phi, Kuminga to Chi, Giddey to Bkn.

The crazy thing is even if they all signed the exact same contract, the trade wouldn’t be allowed due to that base year compensation rule.

I like Giddey to GS, Kuminga to BRK, Thomas to PHI, Grimes to CHI

I think they can fudge it a bit with TPE's. All four teams have one or more

Not sure if this is verified and legit, but news breaking now that Carolina Hurricanes' owner Thomas Dundon is going to buy the Portland Trailblazers from Paul Allen's estate. Huge if true.
Yep. Shams is reporting it. $4 billion. Congrats!

Wow.....that's great news. Also hearing he has no plans to move the team, so that's also a relief. He's going to need a new stadium soon, not sure if he'll enjoy working with Portland Politicians.

You starting to take after a certain world leader with the errant capitalization? Or is this the team's intended new team name?

I saw this from the ESPN article:

In 2024 the Blazers sold their home arena, the Moda Center, to the City of Portland for $1 and the land under the arena for $7 million. It then launched a public/private partnership to renovate the arena and the surrounding area that included a new lease through 2030.

You don’t think these renovations/changes will be good enough for them to stay in the arena past 2030?

I mean....I don't know what else they're going to do. This is NOT a city that plays nice with local business owners and there's absolutely zero public interest in helping to fund a new stadium (we get taxed enough here, thank you) so for the next 5 years, I think the Moda Center has to be the home of the Blazers. It is centrally located and it is right off the light-rail line, so it's convenient. But there is NOTHING around the stadium that works as a pre-game party place. Virtually no restaurants, bars, etc right by the stadium, so if you want that, you have to either park and walk and even then, the pickings are rather slim, which isn't great for a city wanting to take advantage of having a pro sports team to help generate business around the arena.

But, at least the team has a new owner. Paul Allen's sister was invisible and also, creepy AF according to former body guards.

Oh. When I first read there would be renovations to the “surrounding area” I assumed that meant a nice, walkable area for such businesses.

To do that, they'll have to tear down Memorial Colosseum next door to Moda, where the Blazers used to play and now is just an eyesore of a building with very little use or purpose. But - and here's where this city can be maddening - it's on the National Register of Historic Places and can't simply be knocked down.

Absent knocking that down and building bars/restaurants, there's not a lot elbow room around Moda. You have the Willamette River on one side and I-405 on the other. Not building there. The light rail isn't getting moved, so you cant build there. Just not a lot of options for expansion or build out to make this a better game-day experience.

Good luck with the team, GM

Sounds pretty bleak/problematic

Ehhh, I'm glad the team has a new owner. I'd like to believe his group won't move the team. I just worry the city of Portland will be a major source of frustration.

We'll see.

I heard they're moving them to Seattle. Just a rumor though.

Seattle is getting an expansion team.

New expansion teams are Vegas and Vancouver. Portland will move to Seattle and become the Sonics. Djax confirmed it as he overheard a few owners discussing this on the bus this morning.

Actual rumor is that the NBA might not have the votes for expansion. There is a little bit of uncertainty with the local TV rights across the league and until that entire issue gets resolved, expansion might not happen.

Yeah apparently expansion could cost some of the other owners money under the current TV rights deal. Owners generally don't like that.

Oh, well......guess I won't renew season tickets then.

From what I gather, the local TV situation is a terrible problem. There had been problems in Denver for years, right? I don’t recall what is happening now.

In Chicago, they never struck a deal with the main cable provider last year. They scrambled to allow it over the air with an antenna but it was a weak signal that many people had problems with. You could also stream games online for $20 a month. This year, it’s on cable but only if you get the most expensive cable package. They are stopping over the air.

The thing that concerns me is if you make it harder and more expensive to watch games, I think it will make it a lot harder to gain fans from the younger generations. There are already tons of other stuff they can entertain themselves with.

Towards the end of last season, they finally came to a deal with Comcast (our only cable provider in the Denver-metro area) after something like 4 years of no televised games on cable. Like Chicago, there was also a new ability to stream Avs and Nuggets games for $20/mo.

I wish the NBA could buy out the small handful of local TV deals that are big money and distribute games without blackouts to everybody on NBA League Pass.

Absolutely. It's just ridiculous to expect someone to buy League Pass and deal with blackouts. You're buying the pass to avoid that. I often deal with that in Austin being forced to watch that pygmy thing in San Antonio while the Rockets are blacked out 🤦‍♂️
