2025 College Football Thread: Brian Kelly googling what regional accent bottom tier ACC teams have (13 Viewers)

The reason why Kiffin is the first name that comes up for openings is not because he is the best coach but that he has a track record of jumping ship at a moments notice for the slightest advantage for him whether school prestige or money. People know he is a mercenary.
This. I'm not super hyped about all the UF talk. Id almost prefer deion at this point just for the media frenzy.

That said...I just dont know who else. Would UF be kiffens "forever" job? I know we all want that 40 year wonderkind that'll stay 25 years but there isnt one out there. No way UF takes a chance on an up-and-comer right?

I'll puke if they hire Franklin. brohm is at his alma mater. No way Lanning leaves for UF. Gruden already 62. Fan base would explode if they hired Kerwin Bell...he's 60 already. Jesus I'm old.

With so many premier jobs open (regardless which one is "better"), someone not worth it is gonna get paaaaaiiiid.

Brian Kelly odds on next job:

Arkansas- 300
UCLA- 400
Virginia Tech- 500
Stanford- 700
Oklahoma St- 800
UNLV- 1000
Ole Miss- 1200
Tulane- 1200
Penn St- 1400
Florida St- 1600
Wisconsin- 1800
Missouri- 2200

And even if they did, could they stomach keeping him around through the growing pains? Not when there are luxury boxes that need to be sold.

So let’s assume tOSU, Indiana and Oregon all make the playoffs. Does a fourth B1G team get in and if so, who is it?

Iowa after they clobber the toothless, punchless, rudderless Oregon offense in the cash & prizes.

Vertical passing game has vanished.

O-Line can't block.

Oregon has 2 more losses ahead of them.
There is the negative GM we will love. Oregon has never lost to an unranked team under Lanning. Where do you think the 2 losses are going to be to?

I understand you are frustrated with the offense lately and I get it we are spoiled. However, offense is still top 20 and defense is in top 5 playing lights out.

So a lot of these teams that are looking for a coach are just going to trade their coach they are disgruntled with, with some other teams coach they are disgruntled with?

Sometimes a change of scenery can be what a coach needs but is the University of Florida going to be better off with James Franklin or a smaller school guy that has had some success?

My brother in law is convinced South Carolina should buy out Shane Beamer (who is not doing great) to go after Franklin

Franklin is better than the absolute bozo they had, yes.

There are some factors that can really assist or harm a HC. Examples would be the culture fit.... for example, Kelly was just a complete fish out of water with LSU even with trying to force a Louisiana accent. On the other side of that (and Kelly saying he couldn't win at ND) is Freeman embracing ND and it's culture around his "Choose Hard" mantra. It is very hard to change culture at a program (though easier now in the portal era than before) but a HC can't change the broader culture of a school. If you do not align with it, it is going to work against you.

I believe strongly that the GM role is emerging as a primary role of importance in college football and building that 'front office' around them is extremely important even more so than building your coaching staff which is obviously crucial.

Some coaches that have been fired can still have success elsewhere. I don't think Kelly is one of them. One of the big issues with him both at ND and LSU is he kind of checks out and let's others do the work for him. Numerous stories out of both ND and LSU of crucial recruits not having met him at all until they stepped on campus. I don't think he has the drive that you have to have in CFB to be fighting for the team at all levels, in all ways, all the time. He will probably get an opportunity elsewhere... but he seems in coast mode and ND/LSU are his high water marks.

Iowa will beat them. Unless the figure out the vertical passing game in the bye week, that offense is stale. Wisconsin lived in the backfield. Iowa is a lot better defensively than the Badgers.

Oregon showed its true self against Indiana. This isn't a top 5 team. I don't think it's a top 10 team. The Penn State win means next to nothing now.

Maybe paying insane contracts to big name coaches ain't the move anymore

Or at least negotiate more reasonable outs. Athletic reported NCAA schools now owe over $140m in contract buyouts so far this season, still in October. Some of these contract buy-outs are not only absurd numbers, but are have stupid payment terms - like the Florida buyout that is reportedly 50% owed within 30 days of termination. It makes the NCAA look ridiculously hypocritical for fighting player payments tooth and nail in court for so long.

Brian Kelly's buyout is supposedly $53M, which if paid will be the second largest in history after Jimbo's at TAMU. Trivia - it was the same AD who negotiated both of these contracts. LSU alum Scott Woodward left TAMU for LSU in 2019 and hired Kelly a couple years later.

Just imagine what that money could do invested into the program rather paying a coach to leave.

I hope he never gets another shot anywhere. I don't want ******** like him getting another job. Stop hiring people who treat others like dirt. He's never won a title but acts as if he's the greatest human alive. The networks shouldn't hire him either. Stop rewarding entitled jerks. I hope his wife leaves him, I hope his dogs run away and I hope his children abandon him.

Be nice to people. It isn't hard.

Apparently both him and Franklin and when left people around the programs were dancing on their graves just because they were jerks to everyone.

GM's Top 20 - Oct. 28, 2025 - Down The Stretch They Come

1. Ohio State
- They sure knew how to destroy Wisconsin. Maybe Oregon coaches should have watched tape of that game.|
2. Indiana - I put $5 on UCLA Money Line thinking ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Uh, no it's not. Hoosiers housed the Bruins.
3. Texas A&M - Got the meanest man in the world fired so kudos to the Aggies.
4. Alabama - My bet to make one side of the championship coin.
5. Georgia - Careful of the fired coach angle, Dawgs.
6. Ole Miss - Had they just beaten Georgia, this might be the #3 team in the country.
7. Georgia Tech - Good teams don't stumble against bad teams and they certainly did not.
8. Vanderbilt - Prove it win over Mizzou. Serious playoff contenders here.
9. BYU - One of the few unbeaten teams left. HUGE game against Texas Tech Nov. 8.
10. Miami - Made quick work of Stanford, which is how good teams respond to a loss.
11. Notre Dame - Should coast into the playoffs. Teams calling Freeman to come coach for them are getting laughed off the line.
12. Oregon - I watched this game in person. This is not a good offense. The defense is solid, but the offense is broken. They completely stopped throwing the ball down the field.
13. Texas Tech - Blanked Oklahoma State and need to keep the momentum going if they want a playoff berth. I think 2 teams from the Big12 will make it this year.
14. Tennessee - My hunches tell me they could beat at least 5 of the teams ahead of them right now.
15. Cincinnati - Of all the teams bunched around this number, they had the best and most impressive victory over Baylor.
16. Virginia - And this team barely got by Jordon's boyfriend; hardly the game to hang your hat on.
17. Louisville - Said it last week, I'll say it again: I think Jeff Brohm is the next Penn State head coach.
18. Oklahoma - They had the lead for a while but couldn't topple Ole Miss. A good team that will play in a nice bowl game, but the playoff dreams are over.
19. Missouri - Tough loss but the progum is in good shape right now. Wonder how long their HC stays there?
20. Houston - And yet another HC that should be getting far more attention than he is currently. A masterful job by Willie Fritz.

Dropping out:

South Florida
- Memphis outlasted them and now they are on the outside looking in for post-season life.

Just Missed:

Memphis
- Probably my number 21 at this point. Great win over the Bulls.
Utah - Beat the ever loving snot out of Deion and the Buffs. Just put their faces in the toilet and flushed violently.
Michigan - Good team not great team. Hope they at least give Ohio State a game.

Oregon will be favored in every remaining game. Could they lose to Iowa, USC or Washington sure it is always possible but you are letting your emotions get the best of you. Iowa is a one dimensional team on offense and I trust Lanning to come up with a good game plan to stop the run. 21 points on offense by Oregon likely wins that game.

Washington lines will get overpowered by Oregon up front once again like last year. USC strength in passing goes against our strength on pass D where we are #1 in the country in several categories such as opponent passing yards per play.

All that being said I do agree this team has flaws and I think the best chance at a Championship is next year. I do believe Dante Moore will be back and the team is loaded with young talent.

Apparently both him and Franklin and when left people around the programs were dancing on their graves just because they were jerks to everyone.

There's a great story that came out in 2019 when Matt Lafleur was hired as the Packers coach. Lafleur and Robert Saleh were graduate assistants on Kelly's staff at Central Michigan.

On a winter night in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, Matt LaFleur and Robert Saleh thought they were invited to a party at the home of their boss, Central Michigan University football coach Brian Kelly.

Turns out, they weren’t on the guest list.

They were on the worker list.

"We shoveled the snow and parked all the cars," Saleh said. "Then, at the end of the night, we had to go get the cars again."

And then they went back to the tiny apartment they shared as graduate assistants and stood around their kitchen table -- the one without any chairs.

"We decided that when we’re in that position, we’re never going to treat people the way we got treated," said Saleh, now the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator. "And Matty’s lived up to it."

Iowa has an exceptional defense. Oregon's offense - to date - has not performed well against good defenses. They got stymied by Indiana and an atrocious Wisconsin team gave them fits. Dante Moore was ineffective and this isn't the first time I've noticed his inability to push the ball down the field. That's a problem. If Will Stein wants a head coaching gig, he's got a hell of a way of showing it. That was pathetic. The Ducks had -3 yards at the end of the 1st quarter. At home. Against a dreadful team. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

wisconsin has an exceptional party scene and the farmers market is really neat on saturday mornings thats about all you can say for it right now take that to the bank bromigos

Again, you are focusing on only one side of the ball. Will Stein has had Heisman finalist QBs the past 2 years. Oregon is currently at #7 in SP+ ranking in offense and at #5 in defense. Iowa is at #47 at offense and #6 in defense.

In FEI ratings which take into account strength of schedule Oregon is #3 overall and #2 in offense and #4 in defense. Ohio State is #1 overall and Indiana #2. Iowa is #15 so yes they are no slouch. However they are #60 in offense and #7 in defense.

Mainly bc Iowa's bread and butter is the ground and pound game. Although it does look like their offense has discovered how to throw the ball a little bit this year.

And Washington will beat them too. Or maybe USC, though at home, maybe the Ducks win a close one.

Yes that will be key for sure. I expect Oregon to sell out to stop the run and if they don't I will lose some faith in the coaches.

I saw what I saw. All those offensive numbers you point to are thanks to awful competition. The Penn State game is no longer a meaningful win and they needed overtime to do it. Indiana manhandled Oregon. Wisconsin is an awful team but their defense was limiting Oregon and completely took away their downfield passing attack.

Yes, the Oregon defense is good. Very good - except against Indiana. They will keep Iowa in check. But Oregon's offense needs to find answers in a hurry because that was atrocious on Saturday.

Dillon Gabriel and Bo Nix were elite college QBs before ever arriving in Eugene. Will Stein didn't develop them. Dillingham gets credit for the Bo Nix transformation. He needs to show something against good defenses because the games against Indiana and Wisconsin were stinkers.

And yes, I lost $$$$ on the game. I'm angry. And emotional. And irrational.

The fact that a strength of schedule analysis as you discuss in the last paragraph helps Oregon seems counterintuitive to me. And don’t get me wrong, I do not expect USC to win in Eugene or even come close. The Trojans are a deeply flawed team that is just abysmal on the road. I expect a double digit loss. But I do question your confidence on the Ducks’ remaining schedule given their schedule to date. You rattle off their offensive and defensive rankings, but who have they beaten? This is somewhat repeating a post upthread, but here are Oregon’s wins to date:

Non-conference:

1) Montana State - an FCS school

2) Oklahoma State - a 1-7 record and last place and winless in the Big 12 (only win over FCS Tennessee Martin) - coach fired mid-season

3) Oregon State - a 1-7 record (only win over FCS Lafayette Leopards) - coach fired mid-season

Conference:

4) Northwestern - 3-2 in Big 10 conference (5-3 overall) - maybe their best win?

5) Penn State - a double overtime win against 0-4/tied for last place in Big 10 conference (3-4 overall) - fired coach mid-season

6) Rutgers - 1-4 in Big 10 conference (4-4 overall)

7) Wisconsin - 0-5/tied for last place in Big 10 conference (2-6 overall).

So yeah, Oregon’s offensive and defensive rankings are really good, but look at the teams those stats were built up against.

All this said, I’m still betting on Oregon to win out and make the playoffs. But I’m not confident at all about it.

In all seriousness, I think they lose to Iowa, beat Minnesota and USC at home and then the season is on the line against Washington, a good team that nobody is talking about. Oregon's offense is missing something....until I see evidence of a downfield passing attack, I'm bearish on the final month. Dante Moore didn't even look downfield. If he did, it was from his back because Wisconsin lived back there.

Not even mad, just disappointed. #DadLecture

Wrong, what I posted took into account strength of competition

I never once said I was confident that would win out. I don't see a scenario they lose more than 1 game. Penn State was a much different team when Oregon played them and they crumbled after and suffered key injuries in that game. I was there, tough environment and they got it done. The adversity the last few weeks will only help Oregon and their very young roster.

looks like a terrible injury in the james madison versus texas state game with everyone kneeling and a full on trauma kit on the field to take off a player from texas state and i sure hope that guy is ok
