2025 Detroit Lions: Game 1 Lions vs Packers. (39 Viewers)

Turning point was the fumble when Lions were going in for a score. 14 point swing and huge momentum change.

If you can`t stop the run you better score TDs when you are inside the 10.

I bet the Jets would trade Zack Wilson for Sam Darnold right. Darnold looked really good today, good size, good arm and can run when needed.

that did shift the momentum from our perspective for sure

giving up back to back drives of 91 and 92 yards to an offense running basic plays with mediocre talent didn't have anything to do with Goff

any way you slice it, Carolina is a bottom ten offense

570 yards (new Panthers team record) and 37 points from that team is unfathomable

***************

anyway, they were ahead of schedule

lot of work to do in constructing a competent defense

not really sure I want to see AG around for a third year

I was not that worried last winter when AG was getting interviews. The Lions may not be loaded with talent on the defensive side, but there is some talent and we extended a lot of draft capitol improving it. It should be better and is behind schedule.

Next year probably 4 of our top 5 picks will be defense. And I think we deep our toes in the FA market for a top veteran. Our Defensive Line should be close, but today was a head scratcher. We need some major upgrades in the secondary. Derius Slay would be nice to have around.

Dan Campbell/Steve Wilks postgame handshake

"That was an absolute *** kicking. That's a F****ing great job!"

Dan Campbell to Steve Wilks after the Panthers ran for 320 yards in their win over the Lions

press conference:

"I didn't have them ready to go."

"That wasn't good enough. That was a hungry team we played, and we didn't look hungry enough."

“We got what we deserved today. We got what we deserved in our 6 win stretch and we got what we deserved today.”

Dan Campbell put it on himself saying the team wasn’t ready and he didn’t see the fire.

Playoff probability was 41% going into the weekend; would have gone to at least 61% and as high 70% with a win. Would have been firmly in control of their own destiny.

Now at 21% and basically 0% unless the Seahawks lose a game at home to the Jets or the Rams. They’ve lost 3 straight and 5 of 6, anything is possible, but it shouldn’t matter. They could have made sure of that but didn’t.

I stopped listening after the first offensive play of the second half. Jaycee Horn stood up Josh Reynolds & tossed him several yards out of bounds. On the broadcast Lomas Brown went on at length about how much more physical as a team the Panthers were.

Haven’t watched the replay yet but time and again a Lions defender would be there to make a stop and could not disengage to make the play. Carolina ran a lot of two TE with motion and ran counters and traps against the flow, bounced outside where we had no contain. No adjustments from AG - stayed in the base 4-2-5 nickel even though it was obvious what Carolina wanted to do.

Goff had his first turnover in 7 weeks. It was a big one (people are saying it was more on Ragnow than the QB) but come on - you’re gonna have adversity every week. Turnovers, penalties, bad calls, and the other team is going to make plays. You always have something you have to overcome.

Their response to that turnover mirrored how they played all day from the opening snap. Just not mentally ready to do what they needed to in order to stay in the hunt. Hopefully this is a painful lesson to learn from.

Quandre Diggs to go along with Pro Bowler Slay. Diggs just made his 3rd consecutive Pro Bowl.
The legacy of Quinn/Patricia.

I'll give Campbell credit for his comments to Wilks and the post-game press conference.
Suggests to me that he has the ability and fortitude to handle the pressures and ups and downs of coaching.
Also doesn't hurt to have a sense of humor.

As much as yesterday was painful it may have been as one columnist noted a necessary part of the growing up process for the Lions. Anyway, that's putting it in the best light.

It would be absolutely profligate and I’m not advocating for it, but I have on occasion been wondering about Bijan Robinson and how good he could be with our line. Anyways, fantasy stuff. Spend on D unless a QB falls to our 2nd 1st rounder that we love

I trust Holmes. Honestly they have so much more information than we do. He’s drafted well the first two years and I think his ability to evaluate talent is a huge advantage for the organization.

(2nd-6th) Jalen Carter (IDL, Georgia) if he’s still there - lot to be decided in the next couple weeks where that pick will end up. He’s the best fit for their current needs.

Tyree Wilson (Edge, Texas Tech) might end up being the pick if Baker pulls another game out of his butt.

Second pick (15th-20th) - will almost surely be a DB? IDK why everyone keeps mocking Mayer, I don’t believe philosophically they value move TEs enough to waste draft capital on one.

Joey Porter, Jr (CB, Penn state)
Christian Gonzalez (CB, Oregon)
Brian Branch (DB, Alabama)

Bijan probably goes around 25th. Sort of like TE, I’m fine with a Day 3 pick on one but the 5 picks amongst the first 80 or so s/b 100% defense. Maybe spend one on a new RG. No skill players.

I watched the replay a couple times this morning. It was more on Ragnow and the snap than Goff.

Just unfortunate Lions could not recover.

I would be shocked if the Lions drafted the 4th first rd TE in recent history.

I expect a RB, either through FA or in the first two rounds. The coaching staff has given up on Swift as he has hardly seen the ball the last few weeks despite being healthy.

Don't agree with this I think you'll see him get a pretty good runout to end the season. 5.4 yards a carry this year to go with his pass catching skills. He's just been banged up and they seem to like Jackson too. I think Swift is probably a really good buy low in dynasty.

Duce in the preseason talked to Swift about playing through pain. Swift has not done that. Swift has been healthy enough to play the last several weeks, but Williams is getting the bulk of carries. Swift has the talent to be a big time back, but Swift has lost the respect from Duce as a football player. Duce has a very tough coaching style, and I don't think that fits Swift's demeanor. One of them is gone next season and it will probably be Swift. It is oil and water.

I mentioned earlier this year that RB would be seen as a priority need going into the 2023 draft. Still see it that way.

Swift is averaging 5.4 yards a carry but for the season is averaging only 7 carries a game. There are strange things going on behind the scenes regarding his usage. Bottom line is that either mentally or physically he has not been up to the task of being a feature back. There seems to be a lack of trust in him. Right now, he looks like a complementary back who gets some touches in hopes of a splash play. If there is a lack of trust in him do not see him being with the team after his contract is up or perhaps sooner.

Williams is a plodder who is on a steep descent path. He may be playing with an injury but if so, it's not being reported. Williams is averaging under 4 yards a carry (3.8) for the season. In the last 8 games he has had 122 carries for 386 yards. Averaging 3.16 a carry. These stats are not what you want in a starting running back.

Is the current problem with the Lions rushing offense the line or the RBs? Something's not working.

Regarding the passing game Swift has had 37 receptions and is averaging 7.8 yds per catch his reception numbers are down some but his average yds per catch is in keeping with previous years. As to Williams his reception numbers are lower (only 11) but his average yds per reception is only 5.5 which is a career low.

Due to Swift's injury history and non- availability and Williams's lack of effectiveness I see the Lions needing to address their RB situation either in the draft or in FA next year in a major way.

Reading some of the columnists, it's being said that the Lions played a nickel defense for the first three quarters of the game vs Carolina. With the Lions being continually abused by Carolina running the ball the adjustment to a base defense was far too late in the game. With Carolina having previously shown a decided preference to beat you with the run, it is a surprise that the Lions were not better prepared.

Also the Lions players complained that the field was like cement and conducive to injuries. For whatever reason, they had trouble tackling Carolina's players.

Wanted to share an inspiring and positive story with you guys.

A family friend has a son who is likely on the autism spectrum. He has significant neurological, developmental, and behavioral issues. He is also completely obsessed with everything Detroit Lions. Apparently his grandfather, who just recently passed away, was also a huge Lions' fan. This young man knows who all the players are. He knows their numbers by heart, what position they play, where they went to college, etc. He knows who all the coaches are. He knows their history. He can reel off all of these amazing statistics.

So, for Christmas, his parents thought it would be cool to fly him up to Detroit for this Sunday's game. They gave him his gift on Christmas Day along with a Detroit Lions helmet signed by DeAndre Swift. His mother recorded a video of him receiving the gift and posted it on social media. Of course, he was absolutely elated to know he was going to this game, and it showed in the video! Apparently, the Lions got wind of this, as I imagine they were tagged, and they have now given this boy and his Mom sideline passes to go onto the field prior to the game!

Nice job, Lions organization. Sometimes it doesn't take a lot of effort to touch someone's life in a positive way.

My answer is either one, considering it's been since the 90s for either.

But if given a choice, championship > playoff win. Lions are on the right track going forward, but you only get so many shots at a title.

Longest Conference Championship Game droughts:
  • Browns 1989*
  • Commanders 1991
  • Lions 1991
  • Dolphins 1992
  • Cowboys 1995
*because of the 3-year interruption in Cleveland’s franchise history, actually tied for third longest with Miami - 30 seasons

Lloyd Carr’s shared championship was 25 years ago.

I get what you’re saying, but with the 25 player signing limit waived you can rebuild an FCS roster overnight. Look at USC under a first year coach. NFL roster retention is a shade over 55% year over year, average per two years is just above 35%.

You can get good quick at any level in the current systems.

All of the Key components of the Lions roster are set for the next two seasons, so retention is not an issue the Lions will be foghting in the near future. Holmes has put the Lions in an incredible position to build a special team. They need to start going all in next two seasons and make it happen.

Week 17 Rooting Guide

Current odds are 21-24% depending on the source you consult.

With a loss they're all but done. They could conceivably go W-L and still claim the 7th seed (NYG, SEA and WAS all lose out + GB goes L-W + couple AFC South teams lose one.)

Even with a win over the Bears, their playoff probability has a very wide range: 13% to 66% pending other results.

crucial:

DET (CHI) probability could drop to 13% if everything goes against them; could end the weekend in the 59-67ish% range
IND (@ NYG) still 43-78% probability even with a loss
CLE (@ WASH) reduces playoff chances to 3%
NYJ (@ SEA) reduces playoff chances to 7%
MINN (@ GB) reduces playoff chances to 7%

less important:

TB (CAR) eliminated
PHI (NO) eliminated

tankathon:

ATL (ARI) loss for either could be beneficial if Rams lose but Cardinals have the tiebreaker over the Rams (iow LAR pick would be higher if they tie with ARI)
DEN (@ KC) lololololol
NYG (IND)
LAC (LAR)

Ragnow practicing today and will gut out another start. Elliott probably will be declared out. Everybody else - including Kerby Joseph - s/b good to go. OK, rookie G Kayode Awosika also out, but he wasn’t in line to receive any snaps.

Some really good insights from BLs above post with Tim T. This game is the season in terms of making the playoffs. If they lose this very winnable game the Packers game means absolutely nothing. Sorry, but making AR frown don't do it by itself. Get yer ducks in a row and act like a team that has a ****ing future.

overall record 7-8 (H 4-4 / A 3-4)

division record 3-1 (H 2-0 / A 1-1)

chance to be 3-0 at home v NFC North for the first time since 2017.

also a chance to be 5-1 in the division for only the third time (2014, 2017)

last two years of Quinntricia they went 1-11 in the NFC North

MCDC went 2-4 his first year, 2-1 at H.

They need to be ready this week. Playing nickel against Sam Darnold is not being ready. The main focus against Carolina should have been to stop the run. The main focus against the Bears is to make sure Fields doesn’t beat you with his feet and again slow down the run. Hopefully we show up this week.

With Williams trending down, would you sit him for James Cook, who's trending up?

yes

Cook’s usage is hard to predict

his talent is legit - by far the most dynamic bak they have

I know, I know, you can’t legislate usage…I own JC & flexed him last week

Jamaal has had a great year but def let his owners down the past month or so

Thanks. Just got off the phone with my co-GM, and it'll be Jamaal in non-PPR. The CBSsports guru favors Jamall fwiw. It's a crapshoot, but both games should be high scoring. We'll see. Go Lions!

Good call! Congrats

I always remind people I’m nearly always wrong about Detroit RBs week to week
