2025 Detroit Lions: Game 1 Lions vs Packers. (38 Viewers)

just gave my buddy’s 8 year old my Stafford jersey

new #LionsFanForLife made today

(he’s a Rams fan but says he likes underdogs)

aw well we’re a year ahead of schedule in the rebuild anyway

still a good year of progression irrespective of the playoff outcome

No doubt. The Lions have a great core of young talent, no bad contracts, good cap space, and a ton of draft capitol. My biggest fear is losing Ben Johnson. My second biggest fear is keeping Aaron Glenn.

I have a feeling MCDC is going to campaign hard for AG to land his own gig. He’s not gonna say it from the podium but I bet he would love to have to start interviewing DC candidates.

It’s inevitable we’re going to lose Ben Johnson. I’m hoping we get to have him for another 1-2 years but hope he crushes it if someone gives him a shot. He’s a good dude & has a brilliant mind.

Win or lose, its gonna be good experience for all the young guys on that roster next week at Lambeau

Basically---- (POSSIBLY) a playoff game to make the playoffs

Mega bonus if standings hold and they play Minnesota in the first round.....

If Seattle wins they get the final playoff spot regardless of what Detroit does, right?

Meanwhile, the Rams pick could go as high as third, but that would require the Cards to beat the Niners in a game SF needs to win to have a shot at the 1 seed. On the other hand, Colts (Texans) and Broncos (LAC in a meaningless game) both may be favored, so 4th is definitely in play

Yes I believe that is correct, for some reason I was thinking Lions beat Seattle :crying:

NFL should still flex the game to Sunday Night and pray Seattle loses first

To the Rams? Doubt Goodell wants to make that bet.

Meanwhile, I choose to look on the bright side. If the Rams win, Lions can make the playoffs. If they lose, Lions get a better pick and can still play spoiler and knock GB out. Honestly, winning a Week 18 game in Lambeau might do more for the team’s development than making the playoffs and getting destroyed by SF

Next week is TBD but you just extended your season one more week

postgame locker room speeches

too bad they don’t control their own destiny, but still a good season with tremendous growth

outside of another solid game from Goff, today was mostly the rookies and 2nd year guys making plays

Bears are bad - 9 straight losses, 12 of their last 13, they made 30 yards on 28 drop backs

Still, lot for them to be proud of: 8 games over 30, new team records (+ 3rd time over 40)

With a mediocre defense & a little smarter coaching decisions in September they’d be battling for the division

Goals for next year barring some next level Jedi stuff Week 18

I think they will. There isn't an obvious alternative since there is a scenario in which Jax loses and gets the wildcard anyway and Green Bay is win-and-in.

NFL doesn’t want to get burned again like they did two years ago when Philly benched Hurts and handed Washington the NFC East over NYG. Although it’s hard to imagine the Lions lying down in Lambeau (at least not deliberately; lying down in Lambeau is kinda their thing)

This lions team is not going to do what Philly did. They may not be able to avoid such a scenario anyway. If they choose the AFC South title game Jax may have clinched a wildcard by then. Plus...you know...Josh Dobbs.

Seattle needs GB to lose. Only GB controls their destination.

Anyway

Josh Paschal - the 2nd round pick had his first two sacks today. Missed 7 g this year but he seems to elevate the guys around when he does play. Almost a multiplier effect when he’s in there.

That’s three DL with multi sack games, team record. The rookies have 18.50 sacks, 0.50 off the NFL team record for rookies.

James Houston IV - The Problem set an NFL record today for most sacks (8.0) in his first 6 games. 217th player taken, got cut, 10 weeks in the practice squad. I mean I get it - dude I s under 6’, only weighs 245, production came at Jackson State after 3 average years in the SEC. Dude has some crazy bend. 3 sacks, forced fumble, and a career high 33 snaps. Earned those. 8 sacks in 106 snaps is some Madden 99 stuff.

Aidan Hutchinson - half sack, 3rd interception, fumble recovery. He’s up to 7.5 sacks and has never had a season where he touches the ball this much lol.

Malcolm Rodriguez - another solid game, really shored up the weakest position group this year. Third on the team in tackles despite only playing 55% of snaps (usually running downs.). Another late round gem.

Kerby Joseph - 3rd round pick took over FS from Tracy Walker (Achilles) and led all NFC Safeties in the Pro Bowl voting. PotW, 3 INTs, 2 FF, 1 FR, and as we saw last week when he was out, a genuine impact player.

All rookies.

Lions rookies play more snaps, by a wide margin, on defense than any other NFL team. They ain’t all that yet, but that’s a good solid core from the 2022 draft.

Campbell postgame

in rare form

Cool player introductions at Ford Field today. Usually they alternate, the offensive starters one week, defensive starters the next week. Today they only introduced the lineman - first the D lineman, then the O line. Taylor Decker - most senior player on the team (7th year) - got the last intro. First time at any level he was the last guy out.

Goff postgame

last 8 g: 14 TDs 0 INT
2nd highest passer rating December
+ 149.5 Week 17
2472 yards 23 TDs (franchise record) 3 INT @ H
5th most completions and 8th most yards through 7 seasons

Player availability
  • Aidan Hutchinson
  • Jamaal Williams
  • D.J. Chark
  • James Houston IV
  • Taylor Decker
Williams needs 6 yards for 1K and 1 TD to tie Barry’s season record

First time team has run for 2K since 1997
2K rushing & 20 TDs first time since 1989

Lions set franchise records for most yards, points and TDs in home games

Houston & Hutchinson the first rookie teammates to log 7+ sacks in a season

Lions the first NFL team with 3 TEs with 2+ TDs in a season

12 TDs by TEs is a new team record

Lions over 6K total offense for the 5th time in team history

3rd time with 50+ TDs as a team

24 RB TDs most since 1980 (ties record)

Swift & Williams first Lions RB duo with 8+ TDs

Hutchinson first rookie in NFL history to produce at least 7.5 sacks + 3 INTs + 2 FRs

Only the second NFL lineman in NFL history to produce such a season (Richard Dent, 1990)

First rookie DL with 3 INTs

Goff home games numbers are the most impressive. Those numbers project out to over 5,000 yards and nearly 50 TDs for a 17-game season. I knew he was playing well, but those are MVP type numbers.

Of course projecting a full season of what Houston has done in 110 snaps would produce truly obscene numbers.

Along those lines fewer and fewer mocks are projecting a QB to the Lions in the first round. Tankathon has them getting an Edge & a CB.

Nick Bosa has 17.5 sacks in 721 snaps. James Houston has 8 sacks in 110 snaps. Houston projects out to 52.5 sacks with a similar snap count. Totally insane. And the way he just took out Fields in open space was unbelievable. Realistically, this guy is capable of 20 plus sack seasons.

James Houston IV snap counts by week:
  • Thanksgiving - 4, sacks
  • Week 13 - 12, 1 sack
  • Week 14 - 20, 1 sack
  • Week 15 - 25, 1 sack
  • Week 16 - 12, 0 sack
  • Week 17 - 33, 3 sacks
106 on the season; not sure how many times he rushed the passer for the season but yesterday he had 13

First time this season he outsnapped Rodriguez (25, 3rd fewest this season) and only 5 less than Anzalone (38 was his fewest by far, previous low was 49)

Derrick Barnes also played 25 snaps, his most since Thanksgiving

Okudah played only 17 snaps. Several chunk runs v Carolina were a result of him playing too far off, not setting the edge, being unable to disengage. After Fields 60 yarder they pulled him and Oruwariye and Mike Hughes split left Corner until late when they pulled the starters.

Naturally nobody brought up his name postgame but when talking about Fields MCDC said "we lost contain and the player responsible knows that, we got that corrected and he (Fields) only had 27 yards [rushing] the rest of the day."

Obviously ungood benching your number one CB but nice job on the accountability there. But we'll still need him Week 18 and going forward.

we are, if not likely, at last possibly losing Ben Johnson

think a top 5 offense, stocked with young players, outstanding offensive line, with depth everywhere - is that an attractive job?

don't want to mess with something that is in such perfect synchronicity but if BJ wants to shoot his shot, pretty sure we are going to have some high quality OCs going for the gig

selfishly want him to stay another year or two but there's only 32 jobs and unless it's a complete **** show you gotta take the opportunity

***************

hoping he gets an offer from a well run org

Washington, Indy, Houston, Denver, Carolina, Atlanta - think long and hard, maybe better off passing those type scenarios

Arizona (if KK steps down), LAC (if they move on from BS), NE/SEA (they're not living forever) - that's the kind of QB/Franchise I hope he gets to work with

***************

25 NFL HC candidates

Ben Johnson is highly thought of but the reality is there are coordinators with better team success & more experience who will be moved in front of him by a lot of teams

God that was a beautiful win. I was fortunate enough to watch it at the sports bar at my resort and there was a loud group of Bears fans who were there talking smack. Sure was fun to demolish them and see them storm off at the end of the first half.

I will be mailing out game tape from the Patriots and Panthers game to all 32 NFL Presidents and GMs this week.

I watched the game at the new Draft Kings Sports and Social at Somerset Mall. What a great venue to watch sports. It was like being at the game and a sports book combined. They had a DJ that was playing the Roar like they do at Ford Field, then Foward down the field after every score.

Edge projections reflect where the top ranked DL fall in current rankings

Truthfully we have pretty decent depth at Edge but a space eater IDL is a better needs fit

McNeil & Buggs are solid but depth + upgrade would help the overall scheme more IMO

I'm guessing they don't take actual bets there, just the bar & restaurant?

No, you have to do it on your phone. They just give you all the lines and moving money bets to all the games on the boards.

The 2 main TVs are huge, the Biggest and clearest TVs I have ever seen on a bar.

Heard the ESPN guys talking about how Justin Fields has been sacked the most of any QB this season. Lamar Jackson was also on paced to be right up there.

Strange that the most mobile QBs are also the ones who get sacked the most.

It was really encouraging to see the Lions bounce back in such a big way after getting manhandled by the Panthers last week. I loved how Campbell had all the offensive and defensive linemen introduced. And boy did they dominate this game.

I'm praying like hell for the Rams to beat Seattle. I can't think of many things I want as much as having the Lions-Packers game be for a playoff spot.

Week 17 PFF Grades:

Top 5 overall offensive grades:

RB D’Andre Swift – 90.3

TE Brock Wright – 89.3

RB Jamaal Williams – 84.3

WR Amon-Ra St. Brown – 83.6

QB Jared Goff – 80.9

Swift churned out the highest-scoring single-game grade of his three-year career. He forced six missed tackles–more than his last five games combined.

Williams, who ran for a career-high 144 yards, forced five missed tackles and also posted the most yards after contact (107) of any Lions RB in one game in at least the last six seasons.

Wright and St. Brown both earned nice boosts from their run blocking grades, in addition to great marks in the passing game.

Bottom 5 overall offensive grades:

FB Jason Cabinda – 41.5

TE Shane Zylstra – 50.3

LG Jonah Jackson – 57.5

WR Josh Reynolds – 60.4

RB Craig Reynolds – 64.0

The two Reynolds wound up with the two highest grades of any Lions players finishing in the bottom five in any week this year on offense or defense. That’s an indication of how strong overall the Lions were against the Bears.

Cabinda earned his lowly grade by allowing QB pressures on both of his pass protection reps.

Top 5 defensive performers:

DE Aidan Hutchinson – 90.7

DE James Houston – 85.1

S Ifeatu Melifonwu – 82.2

CB Amani Oruwariye – 80.5

CB Will Harris – 78.6

Hutchinson had a monster game with seven QB pressures and six QB hurries in 22 pass rushing reps. That doesn’t count his interception or his fumble recovery in the game. Houston bagged three sacks, earning a 91.6 pass rush grade for the game.

The trio of Lions from the secondary all attained season-high grades. Will Harris, playing in the slot, notched the highest single-game coverage grade (78.6) of his four-year career. Oruwariye played just 14 snaps but made them count.

The pleasant surprise here is Melifonwu, who was at the bottom in the Week 16 loss in Carolina in his first extended action. In 26 snaps against Chicago, Melifonwu did not allow a completion and recorded two tackles without a miss, plus chipping in a sack on his one pass rush attempt.

Bottom 5 performers on defense (min. 7 snaps of 52):

LB Josh Woods – 34.9

LB Alex Anzalone – 45.6

S Kerby Joseph – 47.9

DE Romeo Okwara – 54.1

LB Derrick Barnes – 55.6

As was the case on offense, the low-end range here is significantly higher than in most games. Missed tackles hurt both Anzalone and Joseph, though each fared well in coverage. Okwara registered two QB hurries as a pass rusher but scored a low (49.9) run defense grade.

Other Notes

–The Lions as a team hit their season-high grades in the following categories:
  • Offense – 88.6
  • Receiving – 79.6
  • Running – 90.3
  • Pass rush – 83.5
–PFF logged the Lions with six missed tackles in the game. The Bears defense was credited with 12. Interestingly, the Lions had just three in run defense; two came after receptions (Kerby Joseph and Josh Woods) and one was on special teams (punter jack Fox, believe it or not). Chicago missed 11 of its 12 in run defense.

–Lions WR DJ Chark earned the only dropped pass of the game and it almost certainly kept him out of the top five grades on offense.

–RT Penei Sewell earned his lowest overall game grade of the season at 65.3. Sewell has had four of his five lowest-graded games in the last six weeks.

–Chicago’s overall team grade of 44.3 was its lowest of the season. Detroit’s worst overall team grade is 54.2 in the Week 3 loss to the Vikings.

WRT LAR @ SEA - there's no conundrum here on what to root for. The Rams pick doesn't change much, regardless of the outcome.

Right now it's #6, the tiebreaker is SOS.
  1. HOU 2-13-1 SOS .485 streak L1 @ IND
They just might win; Texans playing better & Colts are shameless
  2. CHI 3-13-0 SOS .566 streak L9 V MIN
Either the 1st or 2nd, doubt they win...but Vikings probably will be the #3 seed win or lose.
  3. DEN 4-12-0 SOS .485 streak L2 V LAC
SEA is more or less locked into #3 here. Chargers win + play at JAX (or TEN); lose and they go to CIN. Should be motivated to win and keep the 5th seed.
  4. ARI 4-12-0 SOS .526 streak L6 @ SF
14 point underdogs, KK having an existential crisis, 49ers outside chance at #1 seed, and they still need to win to hold #2 seed. McCoy ain't winning in SF IMO.
  5. IND 4-11-1 SOS .485 streak L6 V HOU
Full tank mode activated. The only one that might affect the Rams pick; Ehlinger starting QB. Kudos to the alumni / h.s. coach who is providing a valuable service here.

  6. LAR 5-11-0 SOS .517 streak L1 @ SEA
This could go our way. Baker is playing decent, Akers is on a tear, Hawks are fading (lost 5 of their last 7.) Looking above, Rams won't move in front of DEN even if the Broncos win (SOS.) Again - I can't see McCoy beating the 49ers on the road, KK is contemplating stepping down, the alumni h.s. coach is rendering a valuable service securing the highest possible pick.

  7. ATL 6-10-0 .470 streak W1
  8. LV 6-10-0 .471 streak L2
  9. CAR 6-10-0 .474 steak L1
None of these three are affected by a Rams win (SOS.)
***************

That's sort of part one, do we really want the Rams to win bc of the draft pick (stupid logic but I see it popping up in the Reddit/Twitter cesspools.)

Part two: Will the Lions be as motivated if Seattle wins - as they should, they're a better team - and Detroit leaves the locker room knowing they cannot make the playoffs.

Personally I think MCDC will have them in a mindset that will ensure they are fired up irrespective of the playoff implications. Might be a bit more desperation if they know they can go the SB tournament, but I'm not worried about them coming out flat or giving up too easily. I think they have a ton to play for outside of being a possible 7 seed.

I was more excited about making the playoffs when Minn was the #2 seed since it is winnable. Beating SF is a much taller order. Still making the playoffs will be a big morale boost, and even losing to SF will be a good gage of where the Lions are as a team. But really next season is when we become a legit contender. Just establishing we can go into GB in the cold weather and play a good game is an important step. The next 4 seasons are really the target and we need that winning mentality. Going 9-8 and eliminating GB will give us some swagger to build on.

I'm not expecting us to win in Green Bay - we've gone in there before with good teams and more experienced players YET never won BUT we've never gone in there in my time with a GM/coaching structure and offensive scheme that I liked this much. Perhaps, the lack of fear/folly of youth helps us in this instance

There are 19 NFL teams still mathematically alive. At 11%, Detroit has the lowest probability by a good margin (PIT is 19%.)

Presuming a Lions miracle, we're not locked into playing the 49ers. It is the prohibitive scenario should we someone pull it off, but any of 4 teams could be the #2 seed.

Only the 4th and 6th seeds have been determined already,

Current Probability of the NFC Seeds:
  1. PHI 77% SF 21% DAL 1%
  2. SF 71% DAL 14% MIN 8% PHI 7%
  3. MIN 92% SF 8%
  4. TB 100%
  5. DAL 85% PHI 15%
  6. NYG 100%
  7. GB 59% SEA 30% DET 11%

It is unlikely. But I'm not having 15 people over for a watch party because I expect us to lose.

(wifey and I will be only Lions fans....but anyone who knows me IRL knows how much Honolulu blue means to me.)

Yes, they will show up either way, even if it's just to finish on a winning note and a winning record. Spoiling Rodgers playoff hopes will be a bonus.

Not to be a downer but I have too much difficulty reconciling their home & road splits to have much hope for the outcome vs Green Bay.

I really thought they would go into Carolina and show they could win on the road against a team also fighting for a spot. After that performance I don't see much opportunity for them in Green Bay.
