2025 NFL Coaches on the hot seat & Front Office changes (9 Viewers)

Rule change didn't allow in person interviews til this weekend's games. 90some odd percent have been virtual.
I don't think Harbaugh or fired coaches are held to the rule
Yeah. However the Rooney rule requires in-person interviews. That's why we've seen Leslie Frazier being interviewed by multiple teams. I don't think anybody is seriously considering him for their Head Coach but he's a minority candidate who can be brought in for an in person interview because he's unemployed.

Schefter tweeted the Falcons and Seahawks are interested in meeting with Vrabel also

That means the Falcons will have met with BB, Harbaugh and Vrabel...I can't remember another HC job where 3 such high profile, established HCs were under consideration and took interviews that were known to the public.
If BB were to take the Falcon's job, you've gotta think he's made assurances that he'll have a competent QB in the mix. I don't see him wanting to get into basically the same situation down the stretch he had with the Pats.

I think it may be more about power then the QB position...IMO one of his flaws is he thinks he can win with a simply adequate QB who doesn't turn the ball over...he was in charge of personnel with the Pats and there was no urgency to upgrade that position...he had no plan the first year without Brady and while he used a #1 on Mac he did not trade up to get him and he easily could have missed out on him and after that the only thing he did was add Bailey Zappe...if he goes to Atlanta it will be real interesting to see who his QB and OC is...McDaniels did a good job with Mac his rookie year but when he left BB put Patricia in charge of the offense...the only thing more head-scratching then that is it has been reported he really wanted to bring him back for a second year until the Kraft's got involved...someone mentioned Jimmy G and that is something I can definitely see...just not sure I can see him putting in time to develop a rookie QB.
I don't either. Maybe he'll go after Kirk Cousins?

Looks like Anthony Pierce got the Raiders job

• Davante Adams: "He embodies what it means to be a Raider and that mentality, that swag and all the things that he endorses is the things that I believe in."

• Maxx Crosby: "There's only 32 head coaches in the whole world, so you've got to find a leader of men. And when you've got one of them in the building, I don't know why you would let them go."

• Josh Jacobs: “With AP, I am definitely 100 percent in. However it looks, whatever it looks like.”

Now official.

The rumor mongerers don't expect Jacobs to return.
A betting site has them as the favorite destination for Saquan. Another article puts Raiders as a likely destination for Henry.

I don't want to get off track, probably followups belong in the Raiders thread

Aaron Glenn met virtually with the Falcons today and per reports has a meeting with the Titans tonight, as well.

Ben Johnson has concluded his virtual interview with the Panthers and also had the Commanders on the docket for today.

The two Detroit coordinators have received 10 requests for interviews. Glenn has also had requests from Chargers and Commanders, while Johnson will meet virtually with the Chargers and Seahawks on Saturday, and next week with the Falcons and Titans.

As much as I like Henry, I don’t see the Raiders as a good match. Barkley is better than Jacobs but by how much? Presumably Saquon would cost more.

Tom Coughlin is consulting with Pierce on staff changes.
Marvin Lewis had been working as a consultant during the season and they're trying to work out details on a position for him. Both sides want him around.

I read Glenn didn't have time for all interviews this weekend. Lions fans gotta appreciate he's kept the game first n foremost

Rap reporting he has two today.

Before their playoff game on Sunday, both #Lions coordinators will be busy:
— OC Ben Johnson has interviews with the #Falcons, #Seahawks, and #Chargers for their HC jobs.
— DC Aaron Glenn has interviews with the #Commanders and #Chargers for their HC jobs.

ETA

From their perspective it’s such a flawed process bc they have had no time to prepare for it. Basically just meet n greet, get to know you interviews. Not the 4 to 6 hour “here’s my scheme, what I would do to utilize the players rostered rn, here’s what I learned from charting every one of your plays”, et al.

Word on the street is Johnson is the leader for the Commanders job. AG seems less likely to land a gig this go around which is unfortunate.

Maybe he rescheduled to today?

Regarding the Falcons, a recent podcast astutely noted that just about all their interviewees have backgrounds on the defensive side of the ball. It may mean nothing in terms of fantasy purposes for Bijan/London/Pitts, as the QB and the OC will weigh heavily, but worth noting.

Titans DL coach Terrell Williams was promoted to Assistant Head coach last year, still keeping the DL job in what people called a title move to make sure the Titans keep him.

Vrabel allowed him to run a weeks practice, game prep, and coach a game during the preseason and that was big news for Rooney rule/coach development people. Everyone praised Vrabel for the concept and mentioned it everywhere

He also "ran the building" during their bye.

He's been named the coach of the American team at the Senior Bowl.

He's had zero interviews!

The Titans DL performed great for a few games, went thru a slew of injuries, and played pretty well then on. All in all they played great for street free agent pickups so he did a darn good job.

There's nothing I hate more than discussing the race and ignoring accomplishments of an individual so skipping the Rooney rule discussion...

It's something worth the NFL looking into- why he didn't get interviews. It couldn't be easier to go back n find quotes from "teams" praising him last summer. He coached darn well so where are the interviews? I see six street free agents were on their DL to end the year. Who else can "make something out of nothing?"

All teams gotta have some analytics, some chart, or some system that tells them who to interview. Again I don't care race, just accomplishments-
Unit performed well?
Experience with other well regarded coaches?
Production?
Reputation?
I don't care what the list is- to each their own- he should have checked all boxes. And I don't care if he gets a job- to each their own- but he earned a darn interview!

was Belichick ever his own OC? I thought maybe he was one year

I think he was essentially the OC in 2022 before (re)hiring O'Brien:

I thought he was, too. But they were sneaky about it. They never named guys OCs for some hiring reason that I forget, honestly. I don't think Bill ever designed game plans or really called plays other than having the final say. In 2005, they had no OC. Just looked it up. But McDaniels called the plays.

Dan Patrick mentioned reports Belichick has been offered a contract.

Diana Russini tweeted he was flown in Blank's plane and out to dinner last night.

He was never the OC or DC in name but he has definitely been far more involved in each side depending on what was going on and who was on his staff that particular year...here is something from 2022 during the Patricia debacle that is an example:

Breer has Slowik pushing off some interviews to next week due to current duties.

So there's really no evidence of these interviews causing a problem this year. Maybe the new rule is a good one and fans can not worry about it anymore

I’m told the #Commanders interviewed assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for their head coaching job last week, per source. The interview was labeled "detailed" and checked all of the boxes.

.

The meeting included owner Josh Harris, new GM Adam Peters and Bieniemy, who I’m told had an “excellent” and “highly detailed” approach.

I greatly appreciate BNME adjusting and improving his interview style and approach every time. He hasn't gotten the HC jobs and the last couple years GMs compliment how detailed and prepared he is.
I don't often read that about other coaches - could be true- in this ego filled profession I think he stands out for that.
Also, I like the self improvement aspect for a person to potentially be given a job to improve a team- start with yourself

Titans fans are anxiously hopeful expectant Brian Callahan will get the job at tomorrow's interview. No reporter has said. All fan hopes.

I find him interesting the more I learn. He hasn't called plays but has redone offenses to tailor them to the QB (and others) and is extremely involved in the weekly preparation. So theoretically, he could be a HC, hire an OC, and do the very same thing.

Sources: Patriots coach Jerod Mayo will interview Rams assistants Nick Caley and Zac Robinson for New England's OC job this week. Caley interviews tomorrow, Robinson interviews on Tuesday.

Caley coached in New England from 2015-22. Robinson played for the Patriots in 2010

Sources: #Eagles coach Nick Sirianni has let go defensive coordinator Sean Desai, who lost play-calling duties late in the season.

Desai is likely to be in the mix for other DC opportunities.

Previously there was to be a meeting with Sirianni, owner, and GM to discuss the coordinators on Friday and maybe Saturday too.
(The GM may not have been there for the meeting, it's oddly not clear or not mentioned in reports)
This is apparently a result of the meeting.

I understand it to be an open position now.
Patricia is maybe welcome to put his name in the hat but ....that's all I'm getting is the DC is gone.

Slowik was interviewed by the Commanders today for the HC job. According to some local beat reporters he and Ben Johnson are the 2 candidates they're most interested in.

Is the Golden State guy gone because they found their GM? Or is he still involved in the coach search too? I thought he was but haven't seen him mentioned

Sean McDermott will be on the hot seat in 2024:

Sean McDermott on Bills' latest postseason loss to Chiefs: 'We were within a whisker of tying that game'
Excerpt:

Under McDermott, the Bills burst their string of playoff futility, making the postseason in six of seven seasons while winning the AFC East each of the past four campaigns. But Buffalo can't get over the playoff hump with the McDermott-Allen partnership.

McDermott took "100 percent" of the responsibility for the latest loss.

"It starts with me," he said. "I take full responsibility. We didn't do enough to win the game."
Limping out of the playoffs for the fifth straight season comes with looming questions for a club that was all-in on building a Super Bowl contender. The Bills enter the 2024 offseason well over the projected salary cap with few easy moves for resolving that matter while adding and retaining pieces to a roster that continues to fall short.
"We've got to continue to work at it," McDermott said. "That's where it starts. We'll turn over every leaf this offseason and I'm fully confident in this football team [and] fully confident in our staff."
The repeated postseason shortcomings won't make McDermott's life any easier after he and the Bills avoided disaster this season by making a furious end-of-season run to swipe the division title from Miami. The 49-year-old head coach will be under massive amounts of pressure in 2024.
"It's extremely disappointing and frustrating," he said. "It's a type of situation in our business where you've got to spend the whole offseason thinking about it. But it drives you harder -- if that's even possible to drive someone harder -- to come back next season and continue to work at it.
"Listen: There's only one team at the end of all this that comes back happy."

Titans interviewed former Stanford coach Shaw.

This is supposed to be a busy week around the league as the current coaches can do in person interviews.

The Eagles have a presser today, probably the usual- to sell the public their changes and shift to the future

Here's a long snip from Glennon's article. It mentions the Titans but I'm trying to shine a light on the rules too-

That means two candidates the Titans interviewed last week — Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and Baltimore defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald — are off limits this week. They wouldn’t be permitted to do second interviews until Jan. 29 at the earliest.

The Titans were also interested in a third playoff coordinator, Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who was requested by a total of six teams. Johnson interviewed with Atlanta, Carolina, the Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle and Washington, but not with the Titans. It’s unclear why Johnson didn’t interview with Tennessee.

But because Johnson didn’t do a first interview with the Titans before midnight Jan. 21, the team can’t talk to him at all until after the NFC Championship (if the Lions lose on Sunday) or after the Super Bowl (if the Lions win on Sunday).

Bottom line: It appears highly unlikely that Johnson, one of the hottest candidates on the market, will be the Titans’ next head coach.

The #Bears are working towards a deal to hire Shane Waldron as their new offensive coordinator, per sources.

Waldron, 44, spent the past three seasons as Seattle’s OC. Now he’s expected to land in Chicago, which owns the No. 1 pick with a big question looming at QB.

Peyton, Stafford, Burrow, now Levis for him

All those teams and the Bengals ought to be scared of him hiring that guy as his OC in TEN.

To me, he's a no name until hours ago, but all the love he's getting on X and that Callahan needs to find someone he trusts to work with Levis (and Willis 😜)
