☹ Official 2020 Las Vegas Raiders thread ☹ (1 Viewer)

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) The Las Vegas Raiders have placed right tackle Trent Brown back on the COVID-19 list for a second time this season.

The Raiders made the move Thursday because Brown still has complications from the illness after a positive test last month.

Brown missed one game following his positive test but was set to return last week. He then got sent to the hospital just before the game following a reported IV mishap. He rejoined the team on Wednesday, but now is back on the COVID-19 list.

Brown has played at least 10 offensive snaps in only 11 of 23 games since signing a $66 million, four-year deal with the Raiders in March 2019.

The Raiders were also without running back Josh Jacobs and safety Johnathan Abram at practice on Thursday because of illnesses. Abram also missed practice on Wednesday but Jacobs was new to the injury report.

The Raiders did get first-round rookie cornerback Damon Arnette back at practice Thursday. Arnette went on injured reserve after hurting his wrist and thumb in a Week 3 loss at New England. The Raiders have 21 days to activate Arnette or send him back to IR.

''It's exciting to have him back,'' defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said. ''Obviously, he started off real hot here early in camp and was in the starting lineup for us the first couple ballgames. He's going to be a really good player. He's just got to get his feet back under him.''

Las Vegas also promoted running back Theo Riddick from the practice squad to the active roster. Riddick had two carries for 13 yards in Week 4 against Buffalo in his only action this season.

NOTES: S Jeff Heath (hip), DT Maurice Hurst (ankle), T Kolton Miller (ankle) and DE Arden Key (foot) all missed practice for a second straight day. ... CB Trayvon Mullen was added to the injury report with a hamstring injury and was limited. ... WR Bryan Edwards (foot, ankle) was a full participant and is on target to return this week for the first time since getting hurt in Week 3.

Have to follow protocols. Have a bunch of teams not follow and have multiple outbreaks due to not doing their best it can jeopardize the season (a lot of money) so the league needs to do what they can to ensure the money train keeps rolling.
Agree. Gruden doesn’t help matters wearing his face covering half dangling off his face. I notice he was wearing a better version in the Charger game. To bad he had to lose $150k to learn a lesson.

I don't know why all coaches just don't wear that plastic shield, seems way more comfortable but we know Gruden has a history of liking to cover his mouth.

Tons of teams broke Covid protocol yesterday.  Wonder how many teams, coaches, and players will be fined and lose draft picks.
Was a nice clip of Joey Bosa sitting next to a player on the bench yesterday.  Bosa had his mask down around his chin ...

Will be interesting to see what the NFL does this week.   The Raiders should try to have their penalty reduced.

This team goes as the Oline goes. Tom Cable has always gotten the recognition he deserves, but this year he's really coaching his a$$ off. The work he's doing with Young, Parker and Good in particular has been outstanding. I've gotta believe the Raiders have a top 3 Oline in the league by this point in the season.

They did an amazing job running the ball yesterday. Hopefully we get Miller back next week.

Pretty much everyone including his mother wanted his head a couple of years ago. Now it is Guenther.

Our Oline has played incredibly well when missing our RT and LG for all but the entire season so far... then throw in our backup RT and starting LT at times and even then we look decent to good.

I maintain that with Brown in there we have the best Oline in the NFL right now even if Good is in for Incognito. Can't wait to have them both back and healthy.

Takk McKinley waived. Any Dline with any QB rushing ability my ears perk up
I hear what you're saying. But I think they're getting push the past couple weeks. Just not getting "home" again Ferrell making a difference without showing up on the stat sheet. If they don't sniff around Beasley, why would they bother with Takk? I think Mayock/Gruden doesn't want to disrupt any chemistry they think they have going.

Still think Cable is a POS human being but all the credit in the world to him -- guy is clearly a huge asset to our team and our unit.

Again, all credit to Cable this year. But yesterday was more a product of 1) finding a playcall that worked and going to it and 2) Jacobs running ability.

Gruden called a sweep for Booker where our pulling guards and tackles clearly outmatched the ability of SD LBs and safeties in run protection could not handle. That was Booker's first huge rip. Gruden ran this play at least twice more that I saw -- running it to the other side, and disguising the pull out a different formation post-movement. It was superb play calling by Gruden.

And Jacobs was just being Jacobs - even without Ingold, he was plowing into people, falling forward for positive yards even when stuffed at the line, grinding in the pile to get extra yards. I LOVE this kind of football -- the D expects the run, they KNOW you are going to run -- and we run it down their throats anyway.

Ingold seems to have broken ribs -- that would suck as he is a giant contributor to his offense in blocking and receiving.

I'd go after him. He was at odds with the Falcons staff and FO and that's always a flag -- not exactly the high caliber character we look for these days -- but he's a first round talent who is only 25. Let's kick those tires at least.

We need pass rush.

I love Jacobs. He isn't going to tear open a 75 yard TD often as his speed isn't elite but he runs hard with passion and he runs smart with good vision. He doesn't go down on first contact almost ever.

Booker is slightly faster but doesn't run as hard either- good compliment to give Jacobs a breather though.

Richard is more quick than fast. I like him but I would really like to have a burner in the backfield to throw in a few plays late in the game after they are tired and bruised after trying to take Jacobs down the whole game. Would be good for some long break TD's for sure.

Ingold being hurt is a worry. He is dynamic back there and does a great job of blocking as well as giving an option in the passing game. Hopefully he isn't out long.

Speaking of injury- job well done to Johnson coming in after Mullen went out and being clutch to knock that ball loose for the win. I read something he lost a close friend recently so I am glad he got that moment. Hoping he can continue to develop.

STP.... why is Cable a POS? Not trying to argue, honest question.  What have I missed?

  • Allegations of verbal and physical abuse by three women, including his wife of 17 years
  • Slugged a defensive assistant coach in the face
He was fined and then fired by Al Davis over these allegations -- while no criminal convictions came from these allegations, there was a settlement out of court for two of the four above.

Without charges he's found guilty of, I can't say what happened in these incidents. But Cable hasn't really seemed contrite about -- or even indignant against -- the allegations. Here's what he had to say in an interview during a time when he was under fire by women's activist groups to be fired:

Cable recently had these comments regarding the incident. "None of these women understand football", he began saying. "If they did, they'd see that I coach the Raiders and a violent past is necessary to gain employment for Al Davis."

Asked if he had a particular issue with women, he simply responded "I may look big and tough, but deep down I'm small and weak. I tried fighting men my own size, and even some smaller, but realized I was in over my head.

So, I knew if I ever wanted to coach the Raiders, I'd have to start beating up people I knew I could take. I tried children, but they're surprisingly tough. After failing to win fights against cripples, I was left with no other fighting options than women. It was nothing personal. It was all about business, and those particular ones just happened to be there."
Even if he was only joking? That's pretty tone deaf to his own situation and insensitive in general to the issue. Not something I condone joking about.

Ok thank you. Not sure how he still has a job in the NFL, but if AB can get a job, I guess Cable can too.

Dude. It's the NFL. Not exactly the most consistent or rational employer when it comes down to people in the league breaking the law - allegedly or otherwise.
Yea, part of it is that you have so many decision makers. You have the NFL and then 32 teams making decisions plus the influence of the NFLPA.

But yea, you never know. I thought Brown would never play again after all that craziness with the teams and in real life. You have Rice who got cut and never sniffed the field again but then you have Hunt who gets cut and picked up by another team and now is basically the starter by default since Chubb has been out. I don't know.

NFL is the model of inconsistency (especially when dealing with the Raiders), but there was a Grand Canyon between what Rice and Hunt did to get themselves suspended.

FWIW FBO has them as the 11th best run blocking unit and 12th in pass blocking at this point.

If we average the two categories then Rams, Browns, Saints, Packers, Titans ahead of them. So 6th.

I do think they were top 3 earlier on this season and might be there by the end of the season with some players coming back to contribute.

Rice punched the hell out of his wife. Hunt kicked the hell out of some random groupie. What am I missing?

Yea, and that is including games missing both starting tackles (last game) and another we were running a backup Guard at tackle and a third string G at G... not to mention almost the entire season without our starting LG and RT both of whom are dang good players.

With a healthy full unit, there is no better Oline in the league.

This guy says he's never seen Carr better:

My memory is horrible but I'm seeing visions of the 2016 model Carr--maybe better. I'm not going to get into who I'd rather have instead but you can probably count the contenders on one hand. Hopefully his hot hand continues into the cold winter months--say a January 2021 matchup in Kansas City and/or Buffalo?

A lot if you think they were even in the same ballpark.  Maybe you haven't seen the video, I dunno.
So video and how many/hard you beat a woman makes the difference.

(As it did with Rice... i without video he was getting his hand slapped before then it came out and then he was out of football forever.)

At the half way point, he is on track to have his best year in terms of passer rating and lowest INT. 3rd best in yards and tie his TD high point.

I am not seeing a whole lot of difference from any other year. He does have an iron grip on the offense now. He is using his feet more. But other than that it is the pieces around him are better. He has receivers to push it deep more with Agholar and glimpses of Ruggs.

I do LOVE how all the Carr haters have shut up though.

5-3, currently IN the playoffs and not in the hunt having beat two of the best teams in the league has been competitive in all 3 games we lost (and I think with Brown in we would have won 2 of those 3) and now we go into our lighter side of the schedule.

I said to start the season this was the first season in 20 years that I was really feeling positive about this year rather than just hopeful foe better things. So, far, I am not disappointed.

8 games played, 8 fumbles (5 lost)

Tighten it up!

Watch both videos. You will sing a very different tune afterward IMHO.

Speaking for myself here, but I am ready to move on from comparative beatings of women by NFL players.

Raiders sneak into Top 10 in Power Rankings.

Doesn't mean anything -- the Saints leapt up 6 whole spots after they've only looked stellar against TB.

But still -- how about them apples?
The power rankings don’t mean anything.   A 5-3 record does.   This is a well coached team that plays hard for wins.  The biggest surprise for me is the Agholor highlights almost weekly while Ruggs is pretty invisible.   Not sure what Gruden and Mayock were thinking during the draft since Lamb seemed like the best chance to hit as a dominant WR.   There is still time for Ruggs so the book isn’t closed but it sure would be nice to have a true WR1 on the roster soon.

Ok thank you. Not sure how he still has a job in the NFL, but if AB can get a job, I guess Cable can too.
When Jimmy Johnson said "If Charles Manson ran a 4.3, you'd better believe we'd sign him." That is all you need to know about NFL hiring practices. Win at all costs, unless the blow back is going to negatively impact ticket sales. This is the NFL. If this, understandably, repulses you then stop following the league. It is what it is.

While no fan of Cable I have to say he has done an outstanding job coaching the oline. It is one of the main reasons for the team's success.

Don't sleep too much on Bryan Edwards... the kid is a STUD!!!! (if he can stay healthy)

Clelin Ferrell on 72% of the defensive snaps last game

PFF overall: 81.8

Snaps: 57

Pass rush snaps: 38

Pass rush: 72.6

Total pressures: 6

Defensive stops: 3

Hits: 4

Hurries: 2

He doesn't get the sacks (don't understand why since he gets a number of pressures, hits and hurries) but he impacts the game.

I said...well, exactly this. Nice to see regardless -- not sure we've seen us this high since 2016. And before that? Did "power rankings" even exist in 2002?

And totally agree on Agholor being a welcome surprise, he has been incredibly solid and has clear ability to make the big plays.

As to Ruggs? Patience, grasshopper. Am a die-hard Carr truther but I will say that the one thing that will help Ruggs is more accurately thrown deep balls. Invariably the ones Ruggs has caught, he has had to slow down slightly which creates contact. And there have been many more times (I'd say at least 3-4 in the same number of weeks) where Ruggs had clear separation downfield and Carr has overthrown him.

It's much better to lead a receiver of Rugg's speed downfield than underthrow and risk an INT -- but to me Carr seems to need to time these throws a little better and not lead him as much -- because Ruggs is mostly open on these streaks.

Once the timing is down -- look out.

BTW- I don't know if you guys saw this but if you look at the play to end the half when Carr fumbled there are two things to note:

1) Young got nailed with a hand to the face that should have been a penalty.

2) If Young held up a tad longer, Carr would have had Waller wide open for a TD. He was free and streaking downfield and Carr was on his way to throw it.

Yeah that's what Carr said in the post game presser. The positive spin on it, is now they can win games despite themselves, or bad calls. It's been decades since we can say that.

Carr has been great. Him and Kyle Allen are probably the two QB who have really improved this season. Both showed signs of this last year but it has really come together for them the first half of this season. The career adjusted yards per attempt for Carr is 7 yards but this season it is 8.7 yards

These QBs do seem to play some of their best football from ages 28-32 of their careers.
