ALDI. I finally joined the cult. (1 Viewer)

1 cup parsley/1 bunch (chopped)

3/4 cup olive oil

3 tablespoons vinegar

1 tablespoon oregano

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

4-5 garlic (chopped)

Red pepper flakes (to taste, just a little)

Just mix all of the above together. It's best after it sits overnight.  While you can use a food processor, I prefer to chop the parsley myself even if I'm making 2-3x the amount above.

Looks like this. I put it in a jar to keep.
White vinegar?

Yes, use Italian parsley (flat leaf). Oof... No mint. And definitely fresh garlic. Dried oregano is completely fine and what's intended. I think you have to adjust amount for fresh oregano.
If possible, ALWAYS fresh garlic, no matter the dish.

Finally tried the fabled "Red Bag Chicken" (apparently, it's got a cult following even among the Aldi cult). Pretty good. Similar to Chik-Fil-A, and I'd say a closer knockoff than the Sam's attempt.

The sesame-brown rice gluten free chips are pretty awesome.

The Significantly Spicy Hummus is really good. I don't have a particularly nuanced palate when it comes to hummus, but the hummus seems pretty good but ho hum. What I really like about it is that it has a really honest heat. Usually, when something in a grocery store calls itself spicy, it's not. Especially hummus. But this is.

Not really my thing, but the wife really likes the Elevation keto bar thingys.

Making my rounds though Aldi tortilla chips. The guacamole and spicy salsa ones are pretty good. The texture is a tad on the "mealy" side, but pretty solid. I'd imagine I'll like the step up in chip a little more (like someone mentioned the blue corn).

Speaking of chips, Aldi really needs to warn people just how much their chip bags suck to open. If you rip into them like most bags, it'll rip in 20 different directions.

One thing I do like is that, particularly on pantry items, Aldi seems to have clear options for those just looking for something dirt cheap and decent, and then they have a high quality option that's still a really good value.  It seems like they've got both the "I just need to feed these damn kids on a budget" and the "DINK" crowds covered.

In a lot of ways, Aldi is like a Sam's/Costco where you don't have to buy in bulk to save money.

i was going go, but i didn't have a stupid quarter.  need to remember to enshrine one in my car, just for those trips to aldis   :pickle:

Ooooh, completely forgot. Their Choceur chocolate bars are ridiculously good.
Yeah - star of the store.  Cheap and really good.  I also really dig their cheese danish, when they have them.  The 90 cent bread is a great deal.

Need to keep my wife out of the middle "grab bag" aisle.  All those savings dip deep into the red when she wanders in there.

Several frozen chicken products sold at Aldi and other stores are being recalled due to a possible salmonella contamination.

My Aldi shopping list :

1 box each of Baron Von Redberry and Banana Frosted Flakes
2 Tripe Power Push Pops
1 box of Jell-O Pudding Pops
1 package of Magic Middles
2 Swanson frozen dinners
1ea 6 pack cans of RC Cola, Tab, New Coke
1 6 pack bottles of Teeam, Orange Slice
Handful of the following :
    Reggie Bars
    Bar None
    Mars Bars
    Marathon Bars
1 package of Hostess Chocodiles
1 Big League Chew and 1 package of Hubba Bubba

1 rag to wipe the 6 inches of dust off everything

Biggest complaint about Aldi products - their red white and blue all amercian popsicles have the blue on the bottom. I mean what the #### kinda mental defect thought that was a good idea.

It's basically on frozen chicken cordon bleu and broccoli cheddar products made back on Feb. 24th and 25th.

From the sound of it, it's a few people that did not understand that these products, even though they are breaded, are still raw, and didn't prepare the properly (according to package instructions).

Frankly, I think this might be a hit job by Wal-Mart. USDA clearly in Wal-Mart's pocket,  and they are picking on a German company that's the only brick and mortar company to ever make Wal-Mart a little shook. That's just my :tinfoilhat: theory.

But either way, it's just for some chicken cordon bleu type stuff that might be buried in somebody's freezer (that they should toss by now anyway).

I'm in the minority but I love Aldi.  It's basically the only grocery store I consistently visit.  I don't care about the name brand thing - the food at Aldi taste just as good IMO.  The store is very easy to navigate because there isn't a huge selection.  I don't see a big deal about putting a quarter into the slot to retrieve a cart.  I also prefer self bagging.  Add in the money that I save (compared to shopping at say WholeFoods or a local grocery store) and It's basically the perfect store for me.

Is that what some refer to as the "aisle of shame"?  I've started to get a little tempted. There was an outdoor bug zapper that caught my attention yesterday. And some planter thing.

I was about to turn my highly efficient $100 outing into $200 for some #### I really don't need.

"Junk aisle"

We were excited to see them open up in California, after being customers in Minnesota many years ago.  But honestly, we've only been a few times since Smart & Final is right around the corner and we do a lot of shopping at Target and Wal-Mart.  Gotta remind myself and the wife that it's not too far of a drive and we can find some nice bargains there.

No doubt.  We did get a slam ball there for way under typical price, so every once in a while there is something really good in there.

Most of the time, though, my wife gets that dangerous gleam in her eye when we get to that part of the store...

I grocery shop solo. That is intentional.

Shortly after we bought our house, they had a 7 drawer rolling tool cart for like $70.  When the kids were younger every summer we would get a big 200 page book of math/reading stuff based on the grade they were going into for road trips.

Blue corn tortilla chips, 85% dark chocolate, hot Italian Sausauge, bag of jalapenos, bag of mixed mini peppers, russet potatoes, Almond milk, butter,  chicken lunch meat  and ice cream are always great and a stock up items.

They have had 15 paks of Goose Island IPA so no brainer to have on hand.

I just place an order and have instacart deliver...

Our store just recently reopened after a big remodel.  We stopped in this morning (first time in a long time) to grab some of the advent calendars.  We got the wine and seltzer, but they sold out of the cheese super quick so we missed out on that one.  I'll have to read through this thread again to find some things to be on the lookout for...

Still love this place, and I have one about a minute from my house so it's a no-brainer stop for me. I don't have any of the issues others have had other than Aldi being out of something I wanted/needed.

My mom was happy to email this morning that she was able to get all the various advent calendars she wanted to get.  Beer for me, coffee for my wife, cheese and wine for my sister and BIL.

They recently converted an old Bed Bath & Beyond into an Aldi's 5 minutes from our house.  The downside is that now my wife can swing by and keep buying all the "keto friendly" "gluten free" crap she gets.  When it was a 15 minute drive she would only buy the stuff if she happened to be going past it.

Another item I forgot to mention.

This pork shoulder is fantastic.

It doesn't get any easier. Just put that in a slow cooker for 8 hours and you've got delicious shredded pork. It's really flavorful. When it's going to be a busy night, just cut that open and put it in the morning and it's ready to go. Either eat as a rice bowl or will wrap with tortillas along with whatever you like (salsa, cheese, green onions, sour cream, etc).

For the price, ease, and taste, it can't be beat.

Within a few months, we're getting Aldi in the New Orleans area for the first time -- four stores opening up at roughly the same time. They were announced in 2019, but apparently the openings were delayed due to the pandemic. But they started hiring staff in June, so it shouldn't be much longer now.
... or not   :kicksrock:   Not sure if year-long delays are a thing in this business or else it's an indication that it's not going to happen.
