OK, I’m stick to the side that her influence is closer to a nobody than a kingmaker. If she was kingmaker in his eyes there wouldnt be an if.
Jon is saying she is closer to a kingmaker for democrats than a nobody. Jon is correct.
He's risen of late, but he's probably not far off where he started.Has Bernie done poorly since he got the nod from AOC?
No she hasnt. She's been on board with him since day one. All these campaigns have had ups and downs....Bernie is no exception
Technically, she hasn't. She did decide to endorse him a few months back, but she wasn't exactly on the fence between him and Biden. No she hasnt.
I’m not good with British history prior to the 20th century.Maybe @timschochet could give us a history lesson on kingmakers such as Richard Neville, the 16th Earl of Warwick.
Of course she wasnt going with biden. But she definitely could have endorsed Warren and that speculation was definitely out there when she was making videos with Warren.Technically, she hasn't. She did decide to endorse him a few months back, but she wasn't exactly on the fence between him and Biden.
Who would be your top American kingmaker in the last 100 years?I’m not good with British history prior to the 20th century.
I can talk about American kingmakers...
Wow. Great question. Top of my head:Who would be your top American kingmaker in the last 100 years?
No, but others like Warren were certainly an option she was looking at. AOC really wanted to endorse a 'woman of color' but Warren does not fully endorse socialism so that was a no go. Bernie is not her ideal candidate.Technically, she hasn't. She did decide to endorse him a few months back, but she wasn't exactly on the fence between him and Biden.
Here is an article written at the time she endorsed Bernie. He's risen of late, but he's probably not far off where he started.
I don't think AOC makes a difference, good or bad. The media loves hyping them also as if they matter, but I think close to 100% (if not 100% of endorsements) make the political candidates (or the politician making the endorsement) feel important and it could lead to future policy/partnerships, but they mean next to nothing to voters.
I don't contribute that to AOC though. As much as he has been criticized by pundits for saying the same things over and over (i.e. no new messaging to grow his numbers), that could be playing to his benefit with Warren showing herself as dishonest. Biden is still going to be tough to overcome, but this could eventually become a two way race, but time will tell.Of course she wasnt going with biden. But she definitely could have endorsed Warren and that speculation was definitely out there when she was making videos with Warren.
Sanders has a heart attack and gets the nod from AOC in the hospital. His numbers have been a consistent uptrend since. How often does an old candidate have a huge health scare and get a boost in national polls?
I think this is dead accurate.fatguyinalittlecoat said:I agree that she is very influential. I think sometimes I've pushed back on claims that she's basically running the Democratic Party. She has a lot more "soft" power (ability to influence discussion and mobilize citizens) than she does "hard" power (like chairing a Committee or having a genuine leadership position in the party).
She is a mouthpiece for her own agenda. She's a mouthpiece for the left. Anyone who disagrees is uninformed.
Hotness Rating: 1/538.The freshman congresswoman with a 188-page thread is going nowhere?
How many other freshman congressman have a 100+ page thread dedicated to them?
Let's face it, she's just a mouthpiece period. She is a mouthpiece for her own agenda.
There isn't a person on earth that is just one thing.Let's face it, she's just a mouthpiece period.
Where does one even begin with this kind of thing? She's a mouthpiece for the left. Anyone who disagrees is uninformed.
Me thinks he doth protest too muchHotness Rating: 1/538.
If Jessica Alba was in congress it would be a 300 page thread.
I wonder if she puts a chair in front of a mirror and talks to herself.Pretty slow day for AOC. Here are a few of her gems..
"If we want to honor him (MLK), we have to be dangerous too."
"people are paid modern day slave wages"
"The Democratic Party is a center, or a center-conservative party"
The majority of Democrats are "true believers in that we can capitalism our way out of poverty....I believe that assessment is flawed"
And finally blaming racism for the lack of arrests at the 2nd Amendment Rally.
"Why were there almost no police officers” despite protesters “flying confederate flags and [carrying] semiautamtic weapons”?
Obviously, it is the presence of police officers which causes violence which leads to arrests.
I agree with some of her statements. I'll assume for the time being that they accurately reflect what she was conveying, but for at least some of them additional context would definitely be helpful. Maybe you should explain why you think they're "gems."Pretty slow day for AOC. Here are a few of her gems..

I tried the best I could to accurately reflect her sentiments. I did not want to add too much more because it will just be a TL;DR posts.I agree with some of her statements. Yeah, I saw this too. She's properly getting roasted quite badly all around for these ignorant comments.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez argues that people become billionaires only by exploiting workers and preying on vulnerable and less privileged people.
"No one ever makes a billion dollars. You take a billion dollars," she told the author Ta-Nehisi Coates at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event this week. Ocasio-Cortez shared a NowThis clip of their discussion on Twitter.
It is not the only way they make billions, but it certainly is one of the waysRep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez argues that people become billionaires only by exploiting workers and preying on vulnerable and less privileged people.
While I don’t agree that they “take a billion dollars” she’s not wrong that they get there on the backs of the less privileged.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez argues that people become billionaires only by exploiting workers and preying on vulnerable and less privileged people.

I don't understand why she gets much attention outside her district. Just seems weird. My gut feeling is that the Fox crowd keeps closer track of whatever she's doing than than typical Dems (at least those of us outside her district).I will also add that in my day to day life, shmoozing around with all my hippy liberal snow flake friends, I can't remember the last time I ever heard her name mentioned.
I have agreed with your takes that she is a very powerful player in the Democratic party, and I also questioned why people here on the left were so willing to dismiss her popularity. But...you certainly do take her far too seriously and obsess a bit much over her tweets.
I know you can't be serious with this. For God sakes, she's on the front page of every newspaper and website every time she opens her mouth. It's not just conservative sites.I don't understand why she gets much attention outside her district. Just seems weird. I simply quote her tweets and made no commentary. I am not sure how that is taking her too seriously. Sometimes they are ridiculously funny, sometimes they are purr ignorant and sometimes she kind of has a point. But they usually show the thinking of the extreme left. She is kind of the Sarah Palin of the left.I will also add that in my day to day life, shmoozing around with all my hippy liberal snow flake friends, I can't remember the last time I ever heard her name mentioned.

The bolded part obviously isn’t true.I know you can't be serious with this. For God sakes, she's on the front page of every newspaper and website every time she opens her mouth. It's not just conservative sites.
The whole thing. She has opened her mouth without making news.Which part of the bolded?
Okay, maybe every time was an exaggeration. The whole thing. She has opened her mouth without making news.
That’s not true either.Okay, maybe every time was an exaggeration.
I will settle for most of the time.
It is. Respectfully, of course. Whenever she goes public. That’s not true either.
It is. Respectfully, of course. Whenever she goes public.
C'mon, man. This is pure hyperbole on your part. That's nonsense.
She is on the road with Bernie Sanders drawing big crowds as Sanders is soaring in the polls just a few points behind Biden. In the last couple of days she has headline stories in CNN; MSNBC, Newsweek, Bloomberg, and many other non-Fox outlets, just like every other week. Are you embarrassed, ashamed or what? Just own it.I don't understand why she gets much attention outside her district. Just seems weird. My gut feeling is that the Fox crowd keeps closer track of whatever she's doing than than typical Dems (at least those of us outside her district).
I wonder If she's talking about Fidel Castro and other socialist billionaires. He and other similar totalitarians are the only billionaires taking their fortune. Ironic though given her proclivities.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez argues that people become billionaires only by exploiting workers and preying on vulnerable and less privileged people.

We've come to expect this haven't we?Tom Homan hits back at AOC for bashing ICE at Sanders rally: Her statements are 'dangerous' and 'idiotic'

Would you guys stop with all the misinformation? These Amazon expansions in New York were planned regardless. New York lost out of the 25,000 to 40,000 Headquarter jobs. These other facilities jobs are completely unrelated. New York will survive missing out of hundreds of billions of dollars flowing into their districts, but stop the lying about this not being a huge financial loss for the city and surrounding suburbs. I made this point a dozen times, the spin in defending AOC is almost comical coming from anti-Trumpsters who claim to hate such misinformation.Using $3 billion in tax incentives to lure a company to one borough vs another is not really a good use of resources
I'm not following your point...Only fox news talks about AOC. The right is so obsessed with her. I mean check out this article from the far right wing publication Time.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive rockstar who is currently Sen. Bernie Sanders’ most powerful surrogate, warns that Democrats will be making a “dangerous” mistake—and hurt their odds of beating Donald Trump in a general election—if they do not rally around the eventual Democratic nominee.
