Is there a Samsung thread?

Just went from the Note 4 to the Galaxy S7 and very happy with the smaller phone after having a Note for many years.

Also picked up the Gear S2 watch and that's pretty neat. It has it's own phone number (unless you're bluetooth connected to your phone in which case it'll use your usual number).  The best part is being able to send texts and take calls through it.

If you work in a quiet home office like me, it's nice to be able to answer the phone using just the watch.  There is a speaker and microphone right on the watch.  Almost like having a bluetooth in your ear but better.  Really convenient for typing/using the computer while talking.

Anyone else?

Anyone mess with phone automation?

The main I want automation for is to turn on GPS when I open certain apps - Maps, Pokeman, Yelp, etc.

I tried using MacroDroid to do this and it said my phone needed to be rooted in order to toggle GPS. Does anyone know if this is the case with all automation apps?

To preface this, I haven't used automation for that.

I use Automate, however, and I saw in their community that someone developed a flow that will toggle GPS without the phone having to be rooted. They did say they've only tested the flow for Samsung and Nexus devices running Lollipop. I would think that would mean you could create something to do what you're trying to do and have it work on the same devices without needing to root your phone.

Looking for a new phone.  Think I'm switching back to Android.  Likely the Note 7 unless there is something better out.  I switched to Apple because all my companies apps are iOS only but I never use them.  Anything on the horizon that is worth waiting for?

Sign up via Project Fi and get a Nexus 5X for $200
LG V20 maybe?  It is out next month.  New Nexussses rumored for October.   Note 7 is baller though.

ETA: HTF did I reply to that?  I meant to reply to @East Coast Bias

I pre-ordered the Note 7 so I can get the 256 gigabyte memory card should be here tomorrow

I'm currently on a Note 3

I've seen those offers.  I have to order through my work's "portal" so I can't get the memory card or the Gear Fit 2.  I have to pay for the phone ($225) and they pay the bill so I can't really complain.

Note 7 is the best you can buy right now unless you really need the pure Android experience then wait for the new Nexus, but even then the hardware in the Note 7 will be better.

For $225 the Note 7 is a no brainer n

Note 7 ordered.  Will be back on Android next week.  My biggest hesitation to coming back was my 8 year old has an old iPhone with no service that he uses to iMessage me when he's on wifi.  I'm sure there is an app we can use for him to do that.  Any suggestions?

Not sure if it's feasible for your situation or can be done across different phones but I've used the programmable Samsung Tectiles since my Galaxy S3. One at my desk at work, one at my door for walking in to the house, one in my car etc. Just hold the phone up to it and via NFC it will toggle WiFi, GPS

Groupme imo

what is allo,  i really can't tell..  a texting app replacing their "messenger"  or a chatting app like yahoo messenger or AOL IM?

Duo is great
It will be their WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.  Messenger is not going anywhere as far as I have heard, they need that one to placate carries who worry about end users using data instead of SMS for messenging purposes.

I really don't get those.

Do people not just text each other if they need something?

Check out Llama app. I've been using it for years. You can do all kinds of automation and it's has less of a learning curve than similar apps. I use it to change profiles at different times during the day (silent at night/meetings, louder on weekend day) Toggle wifi on and off at night, etc.

Even though I got the discounted price through work I decided to submit for the free 256GB memory card through the Samsung site to see it I could get it.  It was approved.

(and belljr too)  how "slippery" is it without a case?
Hmm - I don't notice it slippery but haven't grabbed it with wet hands or anything.  I oruchased a minimal case for it off the bat fro spidgen for 9 bucks.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GIUICPK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I know it's not the best for protection but it serves its purpose until I decide if I want a more protective case.  With that on it's not slippery at all imo

Note 7

5.7

153.5 x 73.9 x 7.9 mm, 168 grams

Apple 6+

5.5

158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm (6.22 x 3.06 x 0.28 in)  172 g

So I guess it is smaller

No idea about the Apple 7

Anyone else a little disappointed at the recent phone offerings?  I read the review of the Note 7, a great phone itself, but hardly an improvement over my nearly two year old Nexus 6.  Faster processor and an extra GB of RAM.  It also looks good, but for someone who puts a case on their phone this is not a selling point. The biggest thing that makes the Note 7 better is a microSD port but that's not a technological improvement.  I also felt the 6P was somewhat of a downgrade from the Nexus 6 since it removed wireless charging.

Looks a lot like the old GoogleTalk

I'm coming from a note 3 so this is outstanding imo

I'm with you.  Completely unsure what my next phone will be, nothing seems worthy of replacing my Nexus 6.

Hi I've got a Samsung Galaxy S6. Whenever I go jogging and am listening to music, just the motion of the phone in my pocket makes the phone skip tracks.

Could someone tell me how to disable this? Thanks

I'm currently using my Nexus 5 and the battery gets me 12-14 hours on a day when I'm not really using the phone, so that doesn't help.  I'm anxiously awaiting the next line of Nexus phones to come out.  If they don't seem special, is there a consensus best choice out there for a phone-sized phone with great specs and battery life?  Don't care about wireless charging.  Biggest phone I've ever had was this one and my iPhone 6 (for work).  Never felt like they were small, but if a bigger one is better I'm not opposed.

Is that global or US?

Globally I could believe, because Apple has so little presence in third world countries, china, india, etc.

In the US that's a bit hard to believe simply because I know so many iphone users....   but that could be because I don't know nearly as many poor people as I do college graduates also... and all the ultra discount carriers all use droids

I'm not really sure what anyone's really getting from more recent phones that they don't already have.

The phones are getting good enough these days that I feel like as long as you can keep the phone in good shape (read, not dropping it, soaking it, or losing it/getting it stolen) and do a reasonable job of cleaning it up from time to time (deleting things you don't really use, cleaning the cache, etc), that there's little reason you can't get multiple years out of a phone.. switching yearly or even every two years seems financially dump.

I have an s4 mini and other than some camera power and processing speed and battery life (which is a non-issue given swappable battery) I'm not sure what people with a galaxy s7 are really getting out of their phone that I'm not.

My wife and I said the same thing. We had our phones for 3 years.  And I wasn't going to get a new one just because.  The free watch and memory card were some ok incentives.

Anyway that being said my phone worked just fine but after we both upgraded - its a huge difference to me.  My internet and 4g connectivity is way better.  I know it shouldn't be but i get reception at my desk i didn't before.   I just put a new battery in my note 3 and it's still nowhere as good as the new phone.

Phone calls are super clear.

The video is amazing.

And it's just faster.

yes I agree it's wasted money and I could have got buy just fine with the old one.  But things are definitely notcieable

Last I saw here in the US it was like 65% vs 30% in favor of Android...it was well over double, but that might have changed in the last 6-9 months...no idea.

I don't think there is any 'thing' in my life that I rely more than my smartphone.  I've been having some recent problems with GPS and phone coverage that is a problem with the phone itself and I'm out of warranty.  Spending 200 to 300 bucks to fix this issue doesn't seem like a big deal given how much I rely the phone, even if it seems like a lot of money for something that is 2 years old.
