Are concussions the new MCL/ACL tear? (1 Viewer)

Will you think twice on drafting a player, if he has missed multiple games due to concussion?

You hear it all the time.

Gore has had each knee operated on....

So and so, is coming of season ending knee surgery, so I am not drafting as it takes 2 full years to recover...

Kellen Winslow's knee's etc...

These are all concerns people have when drafting (or no drafting) certain players, do you think we will be looking at concussions with the same concern?

You may think twice drafting a RB with "bad knees", will you think twice drafting a QB who missed 6 games due to a concussion?

I won't worry about it too much yet, but dang, in baseball, the way that the Twins Justin Morneau has sat out half the season and now missed the playoffs because of a concussion--it really seems like the sports doctors are taking it very seriously.

agreed, in baseball, it just seems like a guys misses a few games, and before you know it, he is out for 4 months.i.eJason BayI would not be surprised to see the NFL institute some sort of mandatory 1-2 game break for concussion related injuries. Especially if they go to 18 games

I work in a lab doing concussion research from mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI), the field is a real hot topic in academia right now as well as in the medical field. The amount of research being done because of the wars in the gulf and the increased amount of cases. I am not expert as I am only a graduate student but the amount of pressure on colleges and pro teams to be more cautious is increasing. The long term issues on general cognition, memory, and general quality of life after having more than one concussion is extremely serious. People will generally have one in a lifetime by chance, but I don't think a brain can support having any more than that without serious complications.

My point is that I think regulations will be more strict on holding players out from concussions in the near future.

I've had nine concussions. Four of them have been Grade IV (one from a car accident, the rest from hockey).I can honestly tell you that my cognition and more dramatically, my memory, have both been severely affected. They are no laughing matter. Unlike breaking a bone, each concussion leaves you TWICE as susceptible to sustaining another (!!). Knees are no big deal. I did the "unhappy triad" on my right knee about 3 years ago, and have only a mild tick at a certain points in my RoM. I'm full-tilt again (well, as "full-tilt" as I can be at my age. :X ) Certainly, there are players like Edgerrin James who have "not been the same player" after knee surgery, but there are also guys like Wayne and Gore. Knee repair is becoming so good, its almost irrelevant. Hell, look at Welker. Fifteen years ago, a come back like his would have been vapor ware. Now, its a reality. When you look at the decline of guys like Westy, Portis, Trent Green, or guys like Merril Hoge, (reaching back to the 90's where I feel head trauma actually started gaining some "legitimacy" in contact sports), I think concussions are a far scarier injury than a (now) simple knee rebuild (in both real life and FF).
