Ashley Lelie signs with 49ers (1 Viewer)

How many years does a guy get to be labled as having "Potential"? You would think he's way past the point of "Potential".
Well, his last full year with a QB not named Vick he led the league in YPC so one can argue he's entering his prime. This is only year six of his career.
And the hits just keep on comin'....
Ummm...don't you know about the year six WR brekout theory???
Ike Hilliard is going into his 9th year. I expect that this could be his year.

Lelie didn't even sign for # 2 money, he signed for # 3. Actually not a bad deal for the 49ers, they get a veteran receiver who can stretch the field, and they got him with a 2 year deal. Very low risk.

As for Lelie, he is a deep threat, and that is it. The guy might be the most fragile receiver in the game. It seems like after every catch, he is limping to the sideline. And his deops are unreal.

Bingo. And I believe that's what the 49ers intend to use him as too.WR1: ?, WR2: Battle, WR3: Lelie, WR4: Gilmore

What kind of money did Joe Horn sign for when he went to the Saints from the Chiefs?
I don't think you understand my point. I am not arguing Lelie's role in the offense. I am responding to people who think it is a bad signing for the 49ers. It is not a bad deal at all. It's short term and they are paying him like a # 3.I will argue that Lelie is in no way a #1 NFL receiver. As far as the 49ers? Jury is out. I think he does open up the middle for Vernon Davis.

Yeah, I was responding more to the fellow that replied after you...should've quoted him.

he has some similarities to stallworth in terms of pedigree & speed (as well as faults - not an iron man, more of a deep threat)... stallworth appears to go inside more & be stronger & more creative after the catch...

in his best season he had about 70 receptions, 1,100 yards & 7 TDs, which is nothing to sneer at...

with a great running game with frank gore, QB that turned the corner in 06 (& he was youngest draft pick in NFL i think in 05, so he has upside), potentially game breaking TE in davis, & in a division not known for their stellar secondaries, lelie may get some opportunities...

he is only 27, & if he does well, has motivation of getting a raise in near future with only 2 year contract (not a huge vote of confidence on SFs part, but this protects both parties)...

He had 54 receptions. That's not exactly "about 70". His most impressive stat from that season was his 20+ yards per catch. He and Plummer connected for a bomb or two pretty much every week.
