So far I love the "non-moves" by Brian Cashman. Instead of jumping at big name free agents that we dont need hes being patient and trying to build a younger, less expensive winner. I am estatic about the Yankees future.

Turns out Torre never said that and that the reporter from Reuters may have misquoted him. Torre said he was asked if anybody on the team would be able to play CF and Torre said ARod, Jeter, and Mariano would all be athletic enough to play CF. He even said Mariano would be the best one out there but the reporter conveniently forgot to mention that.let this happen!I've been saying this for over a year.Crosby in CF is fine cuz he'd probably be one of the better CFers defensively in the AL.
how many wins do you think the Mets have picked up for the money they've shelled out? Is that enough?I can't say I'm ecstatic about the Yankees prospects in the immediate future, but the free agent market was very thin this year, and didn't necessarily address the needs the Yankees have. That the Mets have signed this many big contracts in such a market is surprising. So far I love the "non-moves" by Brian Cashman. well Wagner had 38 saves last year and Looper had 28, Looper also had twice as many blown saves. Not only do we get a huge upgrade at closer, the Phillies lose one of th etop closers in the game and he stays away form Atl. Looper also had the Benetiz gene of especially blowing the big game. If Looper didn't suck eggs the Mets woudl have swept the Yanks at Yankee Stadium. He also blew the save when teh Mets were 1 game out of the wild card, after which the wheels came off.Delgado was the best 1B option for the Mets out there. He replaces a platoon at 1B last year for the MEts that was dead last or close to last in every offensive category.how many wins do you think the Mets have picked up for the money they've shelled out? The Yankees are starting to realize they need to keep their prospects and stop signing old free agents. This is what Ive been begging them to do for the last few years. They gonna build the team like the teams of the late 90s using the minors. Whats fo funny about that? We won 4 championships like that. GB having NYCelt on ignore but it doesnt work when someone else quotes his ####### stupidity.
Based on what?Crosby in CF is fine cuz he'd probably be one of the better CFers defensively in the AL.
As usual, Dave Pinto has excellent insights into this very question:how many wins do you think the Mets have picked up for the money they've shelled out? Is that enough?
Finally, FWIW, getting younger for the sake of getting younger is not a good idea. Bubba Crosby has a (very limited) career OPS+ of 46. 46. Think about that. Andy Phillips is a good role player and not a bad guy to have around, I guess. But we are not talking about Delmon Young and Conor Jackson here, folks. The fact that some are openly lobbying for these two to be starters on the New York Yankees is, quite frankly, astounding to me.Just how much did the Mets help themselves yesterday, introducing Carlos Delgado and reaching an agreement with Billy Wagner? Delgado posted 31 win shares to 8 by the Mets first basemen, an increase of 23. Wagner brings 16 win shares, vs. Looper's 4, an increase of 12. Since 3 win shares is equal to 1 win, the Mets are looking at 11 more wins next year, almost matching the 12 win increase they saw in 2005. They just need to replace Mike Piazza's 13 win shares. Both Hernandez and Molina come close enough. From a win shares perspective, the Mets are looking at about 93 wins next season. That should be enough to put them in the playoffs.
Based on me watching him play. He is a very good defensive CFer with great range and goes all out on every play. His aggresive nature actually cost the Yankees in Game 5 of the ALDS but in the long run aggresive defense will help the team far more than passive, slow defense. And Im not openly lobbying for both these guys to be starters. I have said that I doubt Phillips does much as I dont think hes a very good player and Crosby will proably never hit in the big leagues. But Id rather the Yanks be patient and plug these guys into the holes they have until someone better comes along (either a younger FA or a developed minor leaguer) instead of signing some aging veteran who'll increase their payroll and who wont help them out much beyond this year. The Yanks could wait to see if Cabrera and Duncan can develop into a good CF and 1B respectively instead of clogging those positions with stopgaps which theyve done the last few years.Based on what? Finally, FWIW, getting younger for the sake of getting younger is not a good idea. I've mentioned this before. You have Duncan who will not be relied on offensively for next year, sitting in the minors and ARod waiting to move back to SS. Jeter is a natural athlete and goes after flyballs like WR's going after bombs. This move is akin to Robin Yount in Milwaukee. I can't see how this move doesn't work.how many wins do you think the Mets have picked up for the money they've shelled out? The Mets finally did it right. Go spend the money on the A1 names, instead of dishing out 80% less cash for players down a tier or two.
Yeah, it must've been tough to watch them get low-budget guys like Pedro, Beltran, and Glavine. As a Yankee fan, I would sure as heck hope not. He posted a .734 OPS in AA Trenton last year. You have Duncan who will not be relied on offensively for next year
exactly, this continues the spending/new philosphy that start last year. Obviosly you don't know much abou the Mets. They have a history of letting the A1 players demanding top money go (Vlad, Arod, even back to Mussina) and instead get the guys down a level or two and pay 75% of the money the top guys wanted (Cameron, Zeile, Appier, etc.). So keep rolling your eyes champ. I never said they were acquiring bargain bin players in the past. The reason why they had a big payroll and sucked is because they would shy away form the top players and overpaid aging players beyond their day instead. The Mets finally did it right. Talk about overpaying somebody.I thought the Cubs were overpaying Bobby Howry (3 years, 12 million).
I don't know that they actually realize this though. There just isn't a lot of top talent this off-season.The Yankees are starting to realize they need to keep their prospects and stop signing old free agents. I never want to see John Flaherty or his .165 BA again.
Why not Don Slaught? Or Geno Petralli?
As oposed to Gordon, who had lost a step from his peak and didn't have a good end of last season?I like this move.Talk about overpaying somebody.I thought the Cubs were overpaying Bobby Howry (3 years, 12 million).
Farnsworth can't handle pressure as his meltdowns in Chicago, and the playoffs this past year have shown.
He does not a great arm, but a .10 head.
Don't tempt me!Why not Don Slaught? Or Geno Petralli?
I believe the older regime wouldve already traded Cano and Wang.I don't know that they actually realize this though. There just isn't a lot of top talent this off-season.The Yankees are starting to realize they need to keep their prospects and stop signing old free agents. wait, the Yankees signed Farnsworth??Yanks signed Stinnett cuz he caught the Unit. I like the Farnsworth signing but bullpen pitchers are so friggin unpredictable. It is overpaying but thats what the market for relievers is this year. Its nuts.

Except that Brian Cashman and Joe Torre, who actually might be in a position of making such a decision, apparently do not feel that way:
FWIW, I personally think it is a good idea.Cashman said he woke up yesterday morning and was "shocked" when he learned of the story. He said he immediately called Torre to ask about the quotes and was told by the manager that the story was "untrue."
Oh, the writer who "broke" the story certainly twisted words. If Jeter were to go to Torre and Cashman and say, "Put me in Centerfield, coach" is the only way it would happen.Except that Brian Cashman and Joe Torre, who actually might be in a position of making such a decision, apparently do not feel that way:FWIW, I personally think it is a good idea.Cashman said he woke up yesterday morning and was "shocked" when he learned of the story. Grudzi-sucks-a-lot? I used to give my friend SO much #### when he was with the Dodgers. I'd get my comeuppance if that happened. But would surely be an improvement over spaz matsuiwww.stltoday.com/stltoday...enDocument
"The Cardinals, meanwhile, have a vacancy at second base as free agent Mark Grudzielanek ponders proposals from several clubs. The New York Mets are a leading contender."
Hey, easy on Slaught (no pun intended). He is batting over .350 for me at WIS.As oposed to Gordon, who had lost a step from his peak and didn't have a good end of last season?I like this move.Talk about overpaying somebody.I thought the Cubs were overpaying Bobby Howry (3 years, 12 million).

I'm not sure if you can linearly add wins over replacement, but if so Farnsworth AL and NL numbers combined trump Gordon's. The levrage number seems to indicate that Gordon was pitching in more crucial situations though.
I find that rumor very hard to believe.Rumor on Philly sports radio has Jason Michaels for Carl Pavano.
pavano for michaels :X BSthe 2nd trade makes no sense either. Abreu is a great player, but its never gonna happenRumor on Philly sports radio has Jason Michaels for Carl Pavano.
ETA:
Also heard Abreu, Lieberthal for Pavano, Posada, Duncan.
Brian Giles has opted against the Toronto Blue Jays and has reached a preliminary agreement to re-sign with the San Diego Padres for $30 million US over three years. Edited to include the link - Giles to stay in SD..

I find that rumor very hard to believe.Rumor on Philly sports radio has Jason Michaels for Carl Pavano.
The 2nd trade make no sense for both teams either.Hey I don't really believe it either, just reporting what I heard. But some of you guys are acting like Pavano is a HOF. It's not a young Roger Clemens we're talking about here, let's no over value a guy just because he's a Yankee. He's had one good year. The Phillies originally asked for Wang for Michaels and were turned down. Now they want Pavano? Michaels is a career backup isnt he? Does he have any potential? I havent followed his career much.
Michaels is an upgrade over Crosby, but more can be had for Pavano.Don't think anyone is confusing Pavano with a HOF'er here either.Hey I don't really believe it either, just reporting what I heard. No but hes certainly worth more than a career backup unless someone can tell me more about Michaels' potential which I asked above.Hey I don't really believe it either, just reporting what I heard. Actually, I agree with 4xChamp on this. And Jason Michaels, IMO, is extremely undervalued by a lot of folks. .400 OBP .814 OPS. (FWIW, Johnny Damon's OPS last year was .805). One of my favorite random players in baseball. Before the off-season started, my guess would have been the Red Sox would try and trade for him to be their everyday CF, or at least to platoon with Nixon (Michaels had a .435 OBP and .845 OPS vs. LHP). Oh, and he made $880,000 last year.No but hes certainly worth more than a career backup unless someone can tell me more about Michaels' potential which I asked above.Hey I don't really believe it either, just reporting what I heard. He was a closer with 25 saves in AAA, IIRC.CHC trades minor league P Jermaine Van Buren to BOS for a PTBNL.
Sign a 38 year old has-been for 18 million? If you're going to lose a stud like Wagner, don't try to spend money to replace him with a mediocre player. Grow the mediocre player, and spend the money to upgrade elsewhere.
