California X is what I get. Guitar tone isn't quite Dino Jr or Milk Music to me, but similar vein for sure. I dig it.What does this sound like? I hear Dinosaur Jr, Milk Music, California X, etc. Guitars of size and consequence. Also hear Connections.

I concur with several mentioned so far. Here are 5 more favorites for Pill that I hadn't seen mentioned:Real tentative top 5 at the moment for Pill, in no order:
White Lung / Hinds / Japanese Breakfast / Sunflower Bean / KAYTRANADA
The Hotelier mines similar territory but on first couple listens is even better. Between these two bands and TWIABP from last year (just google it, I'm not typing all that #### out) apparently I'm a "fourth wave emo" fan.Northern Voice said:I listened to Holy Ghost by Modern Baseball a couple times over the weekend based on the positive reviews basically everywhere and it's pretty good. It's more indie-rock leaning than their emo-ish past albums but still emo influenced. Two singers, one gets side A, the other side B. Here's Note to Self and Just Another Face.
Just had this come up as a Spotify recommendation for me. Really enjoying it. Maybe not the absolute best album of the year, but catchy pop-punk/indie rock that I could definitely see joining my regular rotation. I actually think the second half of the album is better than the first, the last 2 songs are my favorites on a first listen.Bleached- welcome to the worms
Love your articles for our site mantrick, like... john?
who am I kidding. either way- yes, please.
I've been listening to a lot of R&B since the jukebox draft. "Malibu" by Anderson .Paak is an excellent modern rhythm & blues album that hasn't had the blues autotuned and programmed out. Paak (minus the stupid punctuation) sings and raps in his distinctive raspy tenor over a wide variety of beats. The record has the usual load of producers and guest artists but still has a great flow and holds together as an album. The lyrics are decent as well, albeit incomprehensible at times to an old white guy.
Album of the year so far for me.
I have not. Thanks for the heads up.@The Dreaded Marco Have you listened to the new album by The Coral - Distance Inbetween? It's quite good - I think you were a pretty big fan of their older stuff.
Happy 46th birthday to Neko CaseIf you like female singer songwriters, perhaps a Neko Case, check this gal Lucy Dacus out. Been giving her album many spins.
Here's a nice studio version of my favorite song off her LP

I'm a fan... but loooved that last album because there are 3 or 4 tracks that I thought were just outstanding (and more rocking). this one has the same vibe, just less rocking and no real grabbers for tunes for me. still solid though.Angel Olsen
Just getting around to this one---it's fantastic. The GBV vibe is all over it. I'll have to listen to their previous stuff. If you like low stakes GBV indebted power pop, try the new Connections album, Midnight Run. All of their stuff is kinda the same, but I like it all.
I really, actively, dislike most of what RHCP has put out in the last decade or so, but I like "Dark Neccesities" a lot. Not enough that I've listened to the new album, but it's a good song.I'm a fan... but loooved that last album because there are 3 or 4 tracks that I thought were just outstanding (and more rocking). this one has the same vibe, just less rocking and no real grabbers for tunes for me. still solid though.

I was just going to post here about this one too. Love it.Floppo I assume you're all over Preoccupations.

The Bauhaus & the Bunnymen fronted by Richard Butler comparisons are accurate and sound great.
This gets better with every listen.Nigel Tufnel said:Cymbals Eat Guitars is good too.
I agree. They are great to see in person too. This gets better with every listen.
I like Beach Slang!Beach Slang's new one sounds like Beach Slang if you like Beach Slang.
Pretty good show. Kept it pretty close to the album version for the most part and setlist was really heavy on Teens of Denial. No complaints. Lead singer looks like a 24 year old version of McLovin which takes a little while to warm up to. Venue holds about 700 people so great place to see a show. Opening act Lucy Dacus was also better than I expected.Going to see Car Seat Headrest tonight.
