Best Comedy movies of the 2020s? (3 Viewers)

Heard a claim on a podcast recently that there hasn't even been a decent comedy movie made over the last 5 years. They don't make money anymore and the young talent is essentially avoiding Hollywood these days.

So now I'm thinking what is the best comedy movie from the 2020s?

I assume you are just talking about all out comedies - and not Dark Comedies (Anora) or like coming of age movies that are funny (Snack Shack). I think John Cena is probably making some of the best comedies now.

  • Ricky Stanicky - not amazing, but pretty funny.
  • Vacation Friends - Very funny
Some others -

  • Palm Springs
  • No Hard Feelings
  • Bottoms

ETA: I don't really think any of these are as good as Wedding Crashers, Superbad, Old School, Forgetting Sara Marshall, The 40 Year Old Virgin, etc. That era was much better.

There have been comedies since 2020? Seriously, point me in their direction.
I just scanned lists to see if my gut reaction was correct, and it seems it was - most I see listed are hybrids now. I see a lot of movies like American Fiction, The Holdovers, Banshees of Inisherin, Licorice Pizza, etc.. Long gone are the run of movies that ended about a decade ago of more "straight" (operating as mostly comedy, nothing to do with sexual preferences) comedy movies that dominated. We can argue what was funny or not during that run, but I think what people are asking about are movies like Superbad, Step Brothers, Wedding Crashers, Anchorman, things like that. IMO it is telling that I couldn't think of much from the last 5 years that comes close to that vibe. I had thought of Booksmart and The Nice Guys, but those are late 2010s.

The best I came up with for the question of the thread were Palm Springs, Borat 2, My Old ***, and You Hurt My Feelings. That probably says all that needs to be said about the state of comedy movies.

Most comedies aren't funny. It's a genre that fits better in short form like TV or stand up.

Kid's movies might be the exception. I watched The Mitchells Versus The Machines last weekend and thought it was funny and an overall good movie.
They used to be. Too often they got to 120mins+ which is hard to sustain the laughs for. I get the idea of a 30min TV show being a better format, but even then the type of comedy is different now as people tip toe around topics more and play it safer. Also it is still hard to maintain quality for multiple seasons, and TV suffers from that too often for me to bother with watching shows. I've gotten involved with too many that tail off in quality and limp along to the end.

Not movies,* but Tires, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (first season), Hacks, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Nobody Wants This, and Rick and Morty are all really good comedies made this decade.

*Maybe that's the point - movies are giving way to better streaming series.

I enjoyed Tires. I think that also hits on the point of the young talent not going to Hollywood. A Shane Gillis movie would probably do well with a decent writer, but there seems to be no appetite for that.

Barbie (but I’m not having that conversation again)

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Anora

American Fiction

Palm Springs

Shiva Baby

My Old ***

Friendship

The Banshees Inisherin

Those aren’t all pure comedies or SNL/Jim Carrey/Judd Apatow style comedies but they are all funny as hell.

Out of curiosity where do you even hear about these movies? Are they all on streaming services?

My wife and I watch a lot of TV together and the only movie on here I recognized and watched is The Banshees of Inisherin which is at best a dark comedy and not some laugh out loud traditional comedy.

New Naked Gun movie is pretty funny and I don't even need to add any qualifiers.

I just saw it Sunday. We enjoyed it too. I read a random article that it should break even or make a little money after streaming. It’s a good example of how difficult it is for comedies to make money these days.

I've seen all of these and really liked all of them to some degree.

I loved My Old ***.

Also really liked Friendship even with all the cringe moments (which was the point). And the mushroom trip scene was hilarious.

Free Guy was good

The Menu is a dark comedy

The French Dispatch

not that I liked it much but Poor Things was a dark comedy that gots lots of acclaim

Bullet Train
The Fall Guy

I liked Snack Shack

Oh yeah it’s a very very black comedy but you should check some of these out. Two of them even won Best Picture. My Old *** is a great easy watch to start with.

IMO it is telling that I couldn't think of much from the last 5 years that comes close to that vibe. I had thought of Booksmart and The Nice Guys, but those are late 2010s.

I thought you were picking up what I was saying and agreeing but maybe not. I was saying exactly what you're thinking. They just flat-out don't make movies that are solely comedy. There's another filter that is usually there and the laughs come through that filter.

I mean, I'm not really lamenting it but I think it says something is a little off with a culture when it's so fractured that there aren't any assumptions about what is okay and what is isn't. That sort of tension and disagreement doesn't bode well.

But yeah, there aren't any just straight comedic movies that I can think of since 2020. And that seems fitting somehow.

I miss those 90s/2000s cheesy movie plots. The premise didn't even need to make sense and we just rolled with it.

Yeah. I could do those to a degree. I love spoofs like Naked Gun and Airplane! Those were certainly one of a kind and we'll never get anything like that again, but we got awfully serious as a culture. We need another genre if we're going to laugh. It's like needing sorbet to cleanse your palate after every course during a meal. It's fairly anal.

Long form comedy may just officially be dead. Standup acts are still decent for the most part. I hear there are some good comedy podcasts, but I don't listen to those.

TikToks/Reels/Shorts are probably my go-to if I need a laugh. I do agree that times are changing.

i know a lot didnt but i really liked happy gilmore 2 i mean schefty going to jail was as good as it gets take that to the bank bromigos

Plot was completely terrible but the cameos and call backs themselves made it all worth it. I love golf and enjoyed that the players really embraced it.

Willy Z at Happy's caddie was my favorite part.

I didn't see it but surprisingly everyone seemed to love the new Naked Gun and said it's genuinely a laugh a minute just like the old Airplane, Naked Gun movies.

I am surprised you have no at least heard of Everything Everywhere All At Once. It won 7 academy awards and created such a cool moment when Key won.

As fas I know, it's the only Oscar Best Picture winner to prominently feature a butt plug fight scene and two lesbians with hot dogs for hands but I haven't seen Calvalcade from 1932 yet.
