Blake Bortles - Official Thread (2 Viewers)

(RotoWire) Bortles spent more than half of the 2016 season playing through a slight separation in his right shoulder, ESPN.com reports. Furthermore, he dealt with tendinitis in his right wrist during the latter portion of the campaign.

Analysis: According to Bortles, he sustained a Grade 1 sprain to his right AC joint in Week 8 and aggravated the injury three games later, which marked the first mention of a shoulder concern during the season. However, after practicing fully to kick off Week 12 prep, Bortles sustained this activity level for the rest of the year. In a season in which he appeared to take a step back, especially when it came to his mechanics, these ailments may have been to blame. Nonetheless, he completed 59 percent of his passes for 3,905 yards while cobbling together a 23:16 TD:INT ratio in 16 contests.
Was Bortles ever on the injury report? WTF

Finished QB9, only 2 points from QB6. Tough 2nd half schedule. Finished ahead of Wilson, Winston, Mariota. Played through injury, started all 16. Still don't get the fantasy hate on this guy.
You are kidding right?  He was the 6th qb coming off the board on average in redraft leagues. Here's how he finished each fantasy week with 4pt tds:

week 1= qb20, week 2= qb15, week 3= qb22, week 4=qb3, week 5=bye, week 6= qb24, week7=qb19, week8=qb4, week9=qb11, week 10=qb15, week 11=qb22, week 12= qb9, week 13= qb23, week 14= qb12, week 15=qb27.

In the entire fantasy season--dude had TWO weeks where he actually rewarded his owners. Aside from those two weeks--he absolutely killed his owners--and you wonder why the dude is deserving of fantasy hate?  Look at this numbers--he deserves every bit of fantasy hate that comes his way this year.  The only reason why he looks better cumulatively is because many qb's missed games throughout the season--while he didn't--but even with that--week to week--bortles was far below replacement fantasy level.

edit--want to clarify--these stats are for 4pt passing tds, 6pt rushing tds

Second edit:  If you started him every week this fantasy season (with the exception of his bye week)--his average weekly qb ranking would be qb16.  Essentially--in a 12 team league--he was below starter level on average week to week.

Starting him on your FF team is like sleeping with your cousin. It feels dirty.

I got offered Stafford straight up for him and I declined...So there at least one believer in him...for at least one more year....?

Speaking Friday, Jaguars EVP Tom Coughlin wouldn't completely commit to Blake Bortles as the starting quarterback.
However, Coughlin didn't indicate the Jaguars will be moving on from Bortles, according to ESPN Jaguars reporter Mike DiRocco. When he was first introduced as the new EVP, Coughlin said Bortles "is our quarterback." It suggests the Jaguars will pick up Bortles' fifth-year option, but Bortles isn't going to get an extension this offseason after his dreadful 2016. The Jaguars are a dark horse to make an addition at quarterback either in free agency or the draft, but Bortles remains the heavy favorite to be under center as the starter come Week 1.

Jaguars EVP Tom Coughlin emphasized that Blake Bortles must avoid turnovers to maintain his starting job.
Bortles committed 22 turnovers last year -- 16 interceptions and six lost fumbles. The 16 picks were actually a career low. "Taking care of the football is paramount to that position," said Coughlin. "There can be no way the ball is turned over to that extent." Coughlin added he believes improved pass protection and "components around him" will give Bortles a better shot at success, hence the Jaguars' trade for LT Branden Albert.

My feelings on Bortles are this: as long as he doesn't take 3 seconds to throw the ball AND stops throwing Honeybaked Hams to his receivers, I'm fine with taking Allen Robinson in the first 3 rounds (better off taking Marquise Lee around 6th though).

I think you buy low this year and see if you get value, especially in Dynasty. I can game a Dozen "bad" QB's that were great fantasy plays..If i'm a Jaguar fan I care if he is a winning QB. If I'm a fantasy owner points are points even in garbage time.

They are going to make a leap on defense, and likely add a real running game via the draft. This alone will help him improve his overall game. When he sees that he does not have to win the games by himself he will settled down and protect the ball and make good decisions.

Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times Union would "guess" the Jaguars won't pick up Blake Bortles' fifth-year option for 2018.
Exercising Bortles' option would have been a no-brainer a year ago after his breakout 2015 campaign. Rather than taking a step forward, Bortles showed significant regression in 2016 while struggling with his mechanics. O'Halloran is only making an educated guess, but Bortles certainly hasn't developed into the franchise QB the Jags were hoping for when they drafted him third overall in 2014. Jacksonville has until May 2 to pick up his option.

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said Blake Bortles has to "go back and build his foundation from the beginning."
"We told him we wanted him to make sure his arm was ready to go because there will be an increase in reps, which will help him," said Marrone. "You start with the foundation and you look to see how fast they can work through the foundation." Bortles has spent the offseason ironing out his mechanics with quarterback guru Adam Dedeaux in California. The Jaguars are still undecided on whether to pick up his $18 million option for 2018. That decision will have to come by May 3.

Jaguars exercised QB Blake Bortles' fifth-year team option for 2018.

The Jaguars had been undecided on the matter, and most of the local media is shocked Jacksonville opted to pick up the tab on the option. Of course, it doesn't become guaranteed until the first day of the 2018 league year, so the Jags can cut Bortles before next March and not have to pay the option, which is expected to be worth around $18 million. It shouldn't preclude the Jaguars from drafting a quarterback next year, especially if Bortles can't rebound from his bad 2016.

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said Blake Bortles' throwing motion has "improved."

"There's no doubt about it," the coach added. Bortles spent his offseason working with QB guru Adam Dedeaux in California, and Marrone seems to think that work has paid off. It would be easy to dismiss this as summer fluff, but Bortles worked diligently on his mechanics before his career-year in 2015 while the regression of his throwing motion played a large role in his struggles last season. Getting those issues fixed could lay the foundation for a bounceback.

Blake Bortles said he is focused on limiting "stupid" turnovers.

"If you don’t turn the ball over, you’ll win football games," Bortles said. "Turnovers are going to happen. We get that. You have to make sure to minimize them as much as possible and stay away from the stupid ones." Bortles has thrown 51 interceptions in 46 career games, and the Jaguars had 29 turnovers as a team last season, fourth most in the league. Along with improved mechanics, Bortles will need to show improved decision-making for the team to take a step forward.

OTA 10: Albert expected for minicamp

Excerpt:

*Marrone, asked how many times a game quarterback Blake Bortles will ideally throw next season, said his answer was simple: "Zero." He said he wasn't joking about this, and he wasn't smiling when he said it. "For me, I'd like to run the ball every play," Marrone said. "I want to go back to the old way. I want to change the game." Marrone added that he didn't know a specific ideal number for Bortles' passing attempts next season. …

I'm here to eat it. You were right.

I thought after year one that he's a rookie, people are crazy,  he'll get better. Year 2- See he just threw for +4K and 35 TD and who cares if it was in garbage time, he'll put it together in his third year. And then it completely spiraled out of control. He still doesn't know how to read a defense.

I saw most of it. ARob beat a couple defenders and Bottles couldn't get to him, completely underthrew him.

Honestly I'm off every Jags player. Even Fournette.
This - ARob was still winning last year.

Bortles play last year was the worst I can recall.  Not exaggerating that 2-3 of ARobs "targets" per game bounced 5 yards short.  He would stand there and catch them off the bounce.

Should I be nervous on counting on this bum as a QB2 in dynasty? Seems like there is 35% chance Bortles gets benched in-season. Am I gonna have to draft one of these rookies who will play in 2017 just to ensure I have a warm body at backup QB?

Yes. I'd say it's a 50% chance he's not the week 1 starter possibly higher

How deep is your league? - I find that guys like Brian Hoyer, Jay Cutler or Josh McCown/Hackenberg are available in some leagues. Chad Henne should be as well.

The Florida Times Union's Ryan O'Halloran believes "it would make perfect sense" for the Jaguars to cut Blake Bortles this summer.

1010 XL Jacksonville's Hays Carlyon had a similar suggestion Friday morning. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 draft, Bortles has melted down this summer, first experiencing a "tired arm" last weekend -- perhaps an excuse by coach Doug Marrone to see more of Chad Henne or not -- and then a rock-bottom preseason effort Thursday night. Bortles missed wide-open big plays, and even his completions were a chore. Bortles' 2017 salary is guaranteed, but the Jaguars can't let Bortles on the field and expose him to injury, which would guarantee his $19 million salary for 2018. Henne is the favorite to start.

The Florida Times Union's Ryan O'Halloran believes Chad Henne will be the Jaguars' Week 1 starter against the Texans.

Jaguars beat writers are having a field day following Blake Bortles' disastrous Thursday night performance. Coach Doug Marrone has been hinting at this for a week, first giving Bortles a day off at practice because of a "tired arm" and then saying before Thursday's exhibition that Henne would work with the first-team offense. Henne moved the offense and should have had a touchdown, but both Keelan Cole and Allen Robinson dropped surefire scores. Bortles' confidence is in the gutter. Henne gives the Jaguars a slightly better chance to win.

Blake Bortles has only lost in two of the 196 countries in the World.

Peyton Manning has thrown almost 5x as many interceptions as Blake Bortles

John Elway: 3 Tom Brady: 2 Peyton Manning: 2 Brett Favre: 1 Ben Roethlisberger: 1 Blake Bortles: 0

Here's some more good ones hahaha

Blake Bortles has thrown 80 touchdown passes to a combined 9 NFL teams.

Blake Bortles has never thrown a Pick 6 during a solar eclipse.

Jalen Ramsey has never won more than 3 games in a season without Blake Bortles.

Blake Bortles needs 8 touchdown passes tonight against the Patriots to hold the record for most touchdown passes in a game in NFL history.

Despite having 5 rings, Bill Belichick has never beat Blake Bortles in the Super Bowl.
