Thanks. After watching that a couple of times. I'm not sure the 2nd hitter was head hunting. Boldin was on his way down from the first hit and sort of fell into the oncoming helmet.Guy aimed pretty low, launched mostly horizontally before Q got hit from behind, caught Q under the chin. His head was up and if Q wasn't pushed forward it wouldn't have been so bad. I'd like to see no fines for this hit.
I've only seen the youtube clip but it didn't look to me like a cheap, head hunting shot. Everybody launches themselves at the guy with the ball. It just didn't look to me like a deliberate intent to injure type of shot. Maybe when I see different angles and better clarity I'll change my mind, but from that clip I see nothing wrong with it other than the outcome, which wouldn't be the same if Q wasn't hit from behind after the second guy already committed to his hit.Thanks. I saw it from a few angles during the game, and there is no doubt the guy launched himself at Boldin and went helmet to helmet. Total cheap shot.
I agree it doesn't look as bad on the youtube clip. Even worse than having Boldin & Fitz in with 30 seconds to go down by 21 was the fact that Arizona keep throwing the ball AFTER Boldin's injury. Just take a knee, seriously, players were crying, bad decision IMHO.When you're down 21 with a minute to go and you're still firing it around the field, thats just asking for it. I remember thinking before the play how meaningless it is to have the starters all still out there. That game lasted forever. While I respect the Cardinals attempts to come back, at some point you need to realize the game is over, run the clock out and live to play another week.
Yeah, trying to keep scoring points was just asking for it. He totally deserved that for still trying to compete. When you're down 21 with a minute to go and you're still firing it around the field, thats just asking for it. Looked facemask to facemask to me...
Seriously? It looked to me like he just got his bell rung. Knocked out. He's a tough guy and will be back next week. It's not wise to play doctor or speculate, but that was easily the worst looking injury I've seen in years. I wouldn't be surprised if he's not playing again.Best wishes for Anquan.
Watched the clip on NFL.com and I stand by myself. Dude's just trying to make a play and Q's head ended up a few feet closer to him that he thought it would. Of course he had to launch himself, Boldin wasn't that close. But the hit from behind pushed Q forward. Without that, the hit probably takes Boldin in the chest. Not a cheap shot, not a head hunting, just bad luck on a pinballing WR.I agree it doesn't look as bad on the youtube clip. I'm glad Boldin looks to be "okay" and I hope he stays that way, but that was just ugly. If you watch the replays up close you can see the way his arms and legs land and it's enough to make you sick. Just looked terrible and his head looked like a bobblehead. But hopefully he's going to be 100%.Seriously?It looked to me like he just got his bell rung. Knocked out. It really looked like a typical KO to me. Body went limp and arms got stiff. The defender caught him with his helmet right in the jaw. He'll have a headache but looks to be fine. The board was a precautionary thing. Guy is one tough man...he'll be good.I'm glad Boldin looks to be "okay" and I hope he stays that way, but that was just ugly. They may and that's fine. I'm not betting money on it or anything. They'll be looking over it a lot more closely than I with more angles and more expert opinions on the matter. But I've seen worse go unpunished, even so far this year. Week 1 a 9ers player dove at the spot where the WR's knee would be while he was up in the air making a catch and popped the WR's ACL when he landed. One of the cheapest shots I've seen. Probably ending the bubble WR's career. No fine. I know they're focusing on H2H hits, but I just don't see an intent to injure or a dangerous play, just bad luck because of the hit from behind.I'll bet the league disagrees.Watched the clip on NFL.com and I stand by myself. Rhodes was just following the play.... absolutely NOTHING he did was malicious or head hunting. He hit Boldin from behind, and that is what he is supposed to do. There was no launch, no helemet to helmet contact. IMO, your opinion is clueless. Rhodes should be suspended and heavilly fined? You should get a week off for posting such a stoooopid comment. (I don't actually mean that... but it was written to be as a comparsion to the silly statement you made about Rhodes part in the play... clueless and an over reaction)That sort of nonsense behind, glad to hear it sounds like the less serious concussion injury as opposed to a spinal injury. It WAS also very stooopid for AZ to keep playing all their starters in a lost cause. Once the game is clearly, CLEARLY over... run the clock out. This isn'tthe BCS where margin of victroty and losses makes a hill of beans of difference.morris4903 said:Both defensive players looked like they were head hunting IMO. It's pretty hard to predict and adjust to where a ball carrier's head is going to be after another teammate hits the player from bhind.FWIW, I don't know if I'd clarify Smith's hit as dirty. This is his third year in the league and he's got zero reputation as a dirty player. I really doubt Smith was trying to hurt Boldin. My guess is he was trying to hit him hard, and didn't hit where he aimed. Or he aimed to hit him in the head, didn't think it would cause injury, and is an idiot.
Looking at the replay several times, I was a little over zealous on the first hit by Rhodes, but he still was leading with his helmet and was making no attempt at playing the ball. I would still fine him. The second hit looks worse and worse everytime I watch him. If he lead with his helmet, it's only beacuse it's attached to his shoulders. How was Rhodes supposed to make a play on the ball? He was trying to make a hit to jar the ball loose. He had NO play on the ball! Is Boldin some sort of relative of yours? I won't argue the Smith hit... but get off Rhodes already. ALL DB's hit after the catch to make the tackle and/or jar the ball loose. It happens on over 50% of the completions made in the NFL. They call it tackle football... not flag football. Ever play the game? It's violent. It's fun. It's dangerous.Looking at the replay several times, I was a little over zealous on the first hit by Rhodes, but he still was leading with his helmet and was making no attempt at playing the ball. Eh, sorry. It's not where Boldin's head is on what matters here. The first hit was clean, as dude turns his shoulder. The second hit.. the guy sends himself vertical leading with his helmet. Former teammate of mine had to miss a whole season for a concussion. Severity will determine how long he's out. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you here. What would you have them do?Also, I've gotta say F Warner and the Cardinals for going out and continuing the drive after the injury. That was disgraceful.
these guys do have some pride you know...the qb is lofting passes into the middle of the endzone and you don't expect the defenders to hit the the receivers?I thought this was an absolutely despicable play. Still a horrid play by the Jets there and, if it weren't for the illegal hit, would have been another tremendous play by Anquan Boldin. Also, I've gotta say F Warner and the Cardinals for going out and continuing the drive after the injury. Again, I don't know how you dive after a player without leading with your head. I wouldn't describe his action as anywhere near vertical either, he gets stood up some when he hits Q several feet earlier than he expected to. And he hits Q in the lower portion of the helmet, like the chin area which is barely a head high hit. His hands look like they are on their way up in a manner consistent with delivering a big blow but are also stopped by premature contact with Q. As I look at it, if the NFL does fine him (and I never said they wouldn't, just that I hope they don't) it may be because they deem it a "dangerous" play. But even if they do it's still nowhere near a dirty or cheap shot. Like I've been saying it's just a matter of pinballing causing the injury on an otherwise normal play.Eh, sorry. It's not where Boldin's head is on what matters here. The first hit was clean, as dude turns his shoulder. The second hit.. the guy sends himself vertical leading with his helmet. I think Q got an additional concussion the way he fell back on his head.
Not sure I'm seeing the same thing you are seeing. Rhodes definitely made helmet to helmet contact. He wasn't in a position to do much damage with that contact since both he and Boldin were moving in the same direction. But he definitely lowered his head into Boldin's head form behind.Smith lowered his head, led with his helmet and left his feet. That's a dirty play, period. I really don't know how it can be seen as anything else then that. If that's *not* a dirty hit, then what is? Regardless of where he had hit Boldin, it was a dirty hit. The fact that Boldin's head was where he hit doesn't even matter. If Smith had hit him dead in the chest with the same type of hit, it would still be dirty.Rhodes was just following the play.... absolutely NOTHING he did was malicious or head hunting. It's not an illegal hit. So unless/until the league comes out and says it was illegal it shouldn't be called such. I'm getting that you're pretty angry about this. How can you be so certain that the intent was malicious? Big dudes moving pretty quick out there. Unintentional injuries happen. Yes, he was trying to put a big hit on Boldin, but when I watch the video of it, it appears that the DB from behind sort of changed Boldin's trajectory.Do you really want to eviscerate the DB that was involved in the helmet to helmet hit? For all we know he's really sick about it. I haven't heard comment from him yet. Purely speculation. No, I don't expect defenders to inflict illegal and hazardous hits in the name of "pride." Sorry.
You're either arguing for the sake of being a Jets fan or arguing for the same of argument. Either way, typical "shark" pool stuff. You've got some pretty thin skin if this little bit between us is enough to turn you off. I am simply arguing for the sake of my opinion on the matter. You call it an illegal hit, what is your criteria for that? What rule did it violate? What makes you think it was malicious or intentional or despicable? I laid out step by step my reasoning for seeing it as an unfortunate but legal hit and all I get back from you is attitude without counter argument. If you want to make a point, back it up but don't start throwing out the "you'r a blank fan" as one of your arguments. About the only thing I like about the Jets is their uniforms today and although a Seahawks fan I am extremely unbiased when it comes to player safety. Now, if you have anything to say that involves a logical breakdown of the play and doesn't rely on exaggeration or hyperbole then present them. You're either arguing for the sake of being a Jets fan or arguing for the same of argument. Typical? How so? Being overly emotional and irrational? Trying to see into the hearts and minds of an athlete and label his intent as despicable. Definitely scary. My guess is the DB would certainly regret itEither way, typical "shark" pool stuff.
I don't disagree with you there. Probably get fined, but I think you're taking the wrong tact here. Calling his actions despicable is probably premature. If he got up and celebrated over him you might have a case. That was a classically illegal hit and there's no two ways about it. Sorry.
I don't know that I've seen that at the pro level, either (though for some reason I think I have, but I can't think of a specific situation). However, with 30 seconds left and down by 3 TDs, I have seen teams just run a simple up the middle run play. And I've seen them just try a little dump off pass. And I've seen them put their back ups in.I get that the guys have pride. But I really doubt their pride would be saved if they only lost by 2 TDs instead of 3. They had 50 points hung on them. Pride really isn't an issue at that point, I wouldn't think.I do think it was a dirty hit. But I also think it could have been avoided if the Cards had chosen to protect their players with the play calling a little better.I don't think I've ever seen that. Has it ever happened before that you've seen? The offense taking a knee when losing the game?
As of Sunday afternoon, all medical tests performed on Anquan Boldin (head) at Mt. Sinai in New York were negative."The tests were all negative, which is great news, and it looks like he'll be heading back with us tonight," said club president Michael Bidwill. It doesn't sound like Boldin's injury is season-threatening, or that he needed a procedure of any sort. We wouldn't count on seeing him in Week 5, though. Source: Arizona Republic
If the game was over, why did they bother throwing in the first place? Would taking a knee make Boldin healthier? You try to score because that's your job. I've seen teams run the ball to run out the clock, and that would have been fine there. But there's nothing wrong with trying to score some points. Sounds like he's doing very well. Assuming he passes his tests, I think he'll miss little time. I'd guess one game as a precaution and then he'll back. Really a great ending to what was a scary moment.Take a knee, as the announcers and the viewers expected they would. The game was over. There were bigger concerns on everyone's minds at the time. Why go for the 7 points?Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you here. What would you have them do?Also, I've gotta say F Warner and the Cardinals for going out and continuing the drive after the injury. That was disgraceful.
It WAS illegal. Were you not able to see it yet, for yourself?Anyway, glad to hear Boldin is doing well...It's not an illegal hit. So unless/until the league comes out and says it was illegal...Does that change something for you?Was there a flag thrown for illegal hit?I thought this was an absolutely despicable play. You're up 30 points with a couple minutes to go, and you lay an absolutely filthy hit on an opposing player like that? Boldin is a class act and has played with heart and determination since he came into the league. He's the model NFL player. Hate to see something so awful happen to such a good guy.
All of that said, most importantly, I'm glad the early reports are good. The biggest concern was neck injury, so the fact that he doesn't have one is fantastic.
Still a horrid play by the Jets there and, if it weren't for the illegal hit, would have been another tremendous play by Anquan Boldin.

Again, what aspect of it was illegal? The fact that it was H2H, IMO, is because Q got knocked from behind. Which to me makes it not Smith's fault and not an intentional H2H hit. I'm perfectly willing to accept that it was illegal if someone tells me exactly WHY it's illegal, instead of just saying "it was".It WAS illegal. Did Rhodes' helmet "touch" Boldin's helmet? Might have, but that was NO helmet to helmet hit. I doubt Rhodes even saw Smith coming up to hit Boldin. His hit did make Boldin's head go down some, but I think Smith still would have hit helmet to helmet... uninentional but still illegal. A "textbook spear"? Fact is, it was facemask to facemask, which techinally is not spearing. How much did the Rhodes hit change where Smiths hit got him? That is a debate that would go on forever. Glad to see Boldin regained feeling and will come out of this relatively ok.
It was a textbook spear and that type of play has been outlawed (for good reason) for years. Can't really get around that, I don't think.
I do agree with the others that said that the play was pointless. The Cards were calling plays that put their best players are risk when there was very little chance they could win the game. If you want to keep passing, make it short, safe routes. The deep crossing routes are some of the most dangerous routes out there for a WR, especially when the safeties are sitting back on the pass.
