Bought my wife a Peloton for her birthday (4 Viewers)

That's better than pretty good. I've been riding an exercise bike for 15 years and a Peloton for 2. I burn 650 in 30 a minute class. For just getting back on after a few years sedentary is impressive.
Damn, 650 calories. Impressive.

I know I shouldn't look at the leaderboard, but it's the first thing I do. There were about 150 people taking my class yesterday at the same time and I saw the leader with an output  of 317.  I was thinking, oof, that's a little higher than my record (I think mine was 309 before yesterday), but I can do it. I busted my butt and broke my personal record and passed that guy, but then I saw someone hit like 450 in the interim. Holy cow, where did he come from???

It's impressive how fit some of you guys are. Maybe some day for me. I'm just glad to be working hard and trying to get fit again in my 50s.  The funny thing is that I was always intrigued by the Peloton bike, but it was actually my girlfriend that asked me to get one for Christmas. She's ridden it like 5 times so far compared to my 75 or so. Damn thing was expensive, but worth it.

Any advice for a relative beginner? I'm 53. I played hockey until my mid-40s, so I was in good shape with good endurance, but I tore my ACL and basically stopped playing. Outside of walking, I didn't do much exercise the past few years (slew of hockey injuries added up and it killed me to run) so I gained about 20 pounds and have been pretty out of shape.

I bought a Peloton in January. I was/am basically clueless about a workout program.  I started out with 20-minute beginner classes. I remember feeling like I wanted to die after I hit the 18-minute mark in my first class.

I pushed myself harder in the 20-minute beginner classes and then moved up into the 30-minute advanced beginner classes.  I feel like I'm pushing myself pretty hard as I tend to finish in the top 2-3% of riders in a class. I remember taking the 30-minute Weezer class in my first week (it's almost impossible for me to find classes with music I like). I took the class a couple of weeks ago and more than doubled my output.

I guess I plan to move into the 45 minute classes soon, but not sure if this is the right way to progress.  Should I try the power zone classes? I bought a heart monitor and I still haven't used it.

Also, do you guys take days off to rest your body? My legs tend to feel like jello after riding for 5 days plus I can feel some soreness in my knee, too.  I did 8 days in a row and took 2 days off before riding again for 7 straight days. Today will be my 8th in a row.  On a positive note, I have lost about 15 pounds since January and feel like I'm in the best shape I've been in for the past several years. Now if I could only cut out the sweets.
I used to run 2 miles on a treadmill on weekdays for about three years. It was boring and I hated it but I did it because I prefer exercise to dieting. My wife bought a Peloton last October. I'm in my mid-40s and in OK shape, just so you know where I'm coming from. I started off doing 30-minute rides on weekdays for about the first three months. Then I added 20-minute rides on Saturdays. This past weekend I did a 20-minute ride on Sunday as well, with no days off. I stopped running because of knee and joint pain. I sometimes feel slight soreness on the bike, but I think that is probably because my legs aren't straight or the bike needs to be adjusted. The muscles in my quads and rear are pretty much always at least a low-level sore, but I'd like to think that's a good thing.

I'd never done a spin class or anything before getting on the Peloton. I've said elsewhere in this thread, but being able to track my progress is easily the best thing about the bike. I know I'm getting stronger and in better shape because I can measure it. After 130 rides, I've more than doubled my output. I'm probably at my lowest weight in 20-plus years. It's awesome.

Until a few weeks ago, I didn't think it was possible for me to hit 300 kj output. My best is now 321 and I hit 300 every time now. I hide the leaderboard during rides but look at it after. When I see people hit 500 or whatever, I think, No f'n way am I ever hitting that. But hey, you never know.

My wife was the one who bought the bike. She's ridden it about a tenth of the times I have lol. She now says she bought it for me. Peloton should make a controversial commercial about how she bought a bike for her already-hot husband.

Congratulations.

I can definitely relate, especially about the knee and joint pains from the treadmill.

One thing I noticed when I first started riding was that I was only using my quads to push through. I watched some videos and now I'm using my hamstrings properly. I've tried to focus on my form. I always figured that it was just my wonky knee acting up after over-use, but maybe there is something about my bike or form needing further adjustment. I'll keep it mind. Thanks.

A few weeks ago I did have lower back pain that coincided with having moved some furniture around. I don't know if part of it was caused by my hunching over the handlebars, but I definitely pay more attention to my riding posture now.

Use the leaderboard IF it motivates you. I used it for this reason, although after nearly 300 rides, I use it to simply target being in top 3%. Sometimes I wind up in a hardcore ride (Van de Velds or Hincappie), where those riding are the best of the best, and I can't be top 3%. No way. Other times, not a problem. But what motivates me might not motivate you, and it doesn't really work with PZ rides.

Keep at it. I'm super impressed. And don't sweat the cost. It's a fraction of a gym membership, and for those that stop using it, it has excellent resale value (or at least did until last couple weeks; I suspect gym memberships will slide and who know, maybe Peloton benefits from this).

You guys pumped me up today, so I said I'd blast it for a 20 minute ride. 280 output average with Dennis's 20 min ride today. Hurt but so worth it.

I thought about doing the Power Zone test today. I was feeling a bit low energy this morning. I did a just ride for about 10 minutes. Then I did the 10-minute Power Zone warm-up. I think I went too fast because I already felt spent.  Then I see that they wanted you to do the 20-minute Power Zone test right after. Oh hell, no. I wasn't feeling it. Ha. Next time I guess.

My best for a 30-minute ride is probably about 175 average output. If I ever reach 280, I'd have to think my legs would look like late-1970s Schwarzenegger. That's nuts.

I've had my bike a little over 2 years, did the PZ test on Sunday for the first time, looking forward to the training.  I've been a little bored of the standard rides so hoping this shakes it up a bit.
It worked, initial test was 184, 4 weeks of training bumped it to a 196.  The classes also was a nice push to get on the bike almost every day to make sure I could keep the schedule.

Going to try the Robin Aaron Tabata course for the next 4 weeks.

Congrats.  How many days a week of training is it?

I still haven't done the PZ test.  I'm still not sure what I'm doing, but I've just been doing my own thing pushing myself harder every day.  My last couple of 45-minute rides I've averaged 187 and 193. My legs are a little sore though. I've only taken off one day in the last 16 or 17.  I feel guilty if I take a day off.

I've take a few Kendall Toole classes. She's a little beast.  I like Christine D'Ercole's musical taste the best though.

Christine has some great New Wave rides and Kendall has a few metal rides. There are a few punk ones from years ago. I think Jenn Johnson is the instructor.

For power zone guys, I saw this on reditt. Incredible site if you want to know what to expext before hand

4-5 classes per week for the PZ training

First 30 minute on 2/8 I did 204. Today I clocked in at 281.

And that’s with a little detour in late March for the birth of our first son who didn’t give us enough time to shower let alone work out initially.

I’ve gotta investigate the PowerZone that I’m seeing mentioned here.

Nice improvement. Out of curiosity. I went back and looked at my 30 minute rides per month:

Jan - I just got the bike and I was really out of shape for a few years. 141 on the Weezer ride about a week after getting my bike.

Feb - 283

Mar - 329

April - 344

I guess I got a big jump early on. It's getting harder to make big increases, but I'm generally getting better with each ride.

I tweaked my knee last week chasing my dog in the rain. I already have a torn acl and a bit of arthritis in that knee I think. Getting old sucks.   I missed 4 days of riding and I felt like crying. I'm about to do my 4th day in a row back. I want to get back on schedule before trying the Power Zone. I think the PZ training is really going to help.

Took my FTP test today. Went from 198 to 208. Ill take it. I was beat. I definitely left it all on the bike. My total output was 262, average of 219.

I don't know if this is a dumb question or a brilliant question, so I'll just toss it out there.  Pelotons seem to have nice screens, and they obviously require an internet connection to stream classes.  Does that mean that they can also run Netflix, Prime, Hulu, etc.?  Thinking ahead for when it gets cold again.

Nope, I think you can jailbreak (and void warranty).

Us too, been obsessing about it. Just an FYI, I’m waiting to May 1st when Peloton is expected to make an announcement that may include:

-New Bike tablet

-Slightly lower price tread

-Rower

I’ll likely buy something then, new or old model will depend on announcement.

If I do the math, If you averaged 219, is the 208 a 5% reduction as if you were to ride for an hour or something like that?

Yesterday was my 100th ride, so I decided to take the test this morning. My output was 253 with an average of 215 and my FTP was 204. I eased up the last couple of minutes because like an idiot, I took a class before the test.  I don't know about you guys, but I'm spent after these classes and drenched. These are hard workouts.

Also, I heard that they give away a t-shirt or something after a 100th ride. Is that right?

Started branching out and doing some of the strength workouts (mainly core). Good stuff and I’ve definitely noticed a difference in the month or so I’ve been doing them.  I’m definitely getting in better shape overall during the quarantine; I think I’m working on a 40 day or so streak at this point.

Anyone with a Peloton who isn't in better shape than they were six weeks ago is really missing the boat. Congrats on the 40 day streak - that's awesome.

Yes. You will get an email with a link in a week or two. If you dont, just contact them and they will send it.

I could never do anything but the warm up before the FTP. You are nuts.

I saw something how the majority of people would be gaining weight during the quarantine because they wouldn't have access to their typical exercise and would just be sitting around eating & watching tv.  Having this bike is a godsend. I also have a nice treadmill, but I don't think I've used it once since I got the bike.

I started #FBGS if anyone wants to join in.
I just did 2 rides. I'll join next time.

Man, today was a first. I was doing my first power zone training class and with 6 minutes left, I see my old dog (15.5 years) crouch down to go on the carpet. By the time I cleaned it up, I only had 2 minutes left. I went zone 7 for the last 2 minutes to catch up.  I've never had a class interrupted before. I even took out my dogs twice before I started my class.  It's too bad there is no pause button.

Thinking to maybe shoot for a new 45-min PR tomorrow. Currently at 692 (on an Alex HIIT & Hills ride), shooting for 705. Prob gonna take a Kendall "climb" ride and try to just grind like a MFer out of the saddle.

I'm a marathon runner first and foremost, but I love having this thing to complement my outdoor running.

So I've taken the first 2 Power Zone classes after the test. Do these classes seem a bit light? It's all power zone 1-3.

I hope it ramps up soon because I feel like I was doing way better on my own. I'm sure there is a purpose for these early zone classes, but so far I'm riding one zone higher than the instructor is asking for because it's been way too easy. Or maybe i'll regret saying this by weeks 3 and 4.

There are 3 types of PZ rides. The ones that you are riding are the PZ Endurance rides. You will not go higher than 3. These rides will be the basis for your growth because it works on endurance. In the 60 minute rides you can be in some 3 for 9 minutes.

Power Zone rides will get you into the 4,5,6 range. Typically you will not be in zone 6 for longer than one minute. I’ve done 2-2.5 minutes in zone 5 and it is hard.

Power zone max will get you into 5,6,7 range.

if you take Wilpers a lot, which I do, he explains the science behind it.

you have two options. 1. Retest and see if you didn’t push hard enough on the ftp test

2. slow down and enjoy the process. Riding a zone higher than what is intended doesn’t do anything for you if you want to stick with power zone.

eta: 3. ditch the tutorial and just pick your own PZ rides. That is what I did. I didn’t follow their plan

That's right. It was the endurance rides. I was just following along to their weekly plan

I think I've taken each of the 4 PZ instructors this week. I do like Wilpers.

I guess I'll ditch the endurance rides in the weekly plan and just try the regular PZ classes.

Thanks

I think a mix of those rides are good. I typically do 3 rides a week. I always do 1 power zone ride and 1 power zone endurance ride a week. I then throw in another ride where music interests me and not a PZ ride. I like doing the endurance ones as I think the longer sessions are helpful. You do a 60 minute endurance ride and it is a real workout. The power zone max rides are insane and I don’t usually do them unless it is a short 20 minute ride and want to crush myself in a short time period.

I ride 7 days a week. I usually do 3 power zone endurance rides, typically all 60 minutes (took my first 75 minute one the other day), 2 power zone rides and then 2 fillers like a Tabata ride or Emma Lovewell 45 minute ride without arms.  I was tired today and did a 20 minute punk ride with Leanne. Wasnt a big fan

I have only done 1 max class but there really arent many of them in the first place.

Stick to the plan, I felt the exact same way, felt the endurance rides were too easy.  After 4 weeks I had a 7% improvement on my test, I was shocked.

Agreed.  I got the bike last June and my initial FTP was 163.  Thought the endurance rides were way too easy but stuck with it and started doing the PowerZone Pack challenges after I finished the Discover Your Power Zone program.  My last FTP about 6 weeks ago was 237 and I'm going to test again in another 2 weeks and hope to increase it even more.  Power Zone rides definitely work.  I'm loving having this bike with the current situation.

Crushed the 45-min PR attempt yesterday.  I got 764, and I think I can still do better.  :boxing:

General question because I'm a relative noob:

Why do people do follower requests? What are the benefits of it? Do they see your workouts?  Maybe take a class that you've taken to compare? Do people get alerts or something when you sign up to take a class?

I had a couple of random requests before, but i ignored them since I didn't recognize their names and they didn't seem to be regular riders.  Today almost immediately after a class, I had a couple of requests from names that I recognized from the class.

What heart rate monitor do you guys use?  The one with the bike stinks and I want one I can use when riding my real bike with the weather nicer - tying to Strava would be nice.

I use my Apple Watch, but it doesn't sync to the Peleton.  I just use it to track my heart rate during the workout.

Ive never had a random ask to follow me.

Tried a couple others with varying results but then never had a problem with my Scosche.

Are there any android smart watches that work with the peloton?  I love my Garmin and it tracks HR but doesn't talk with the peloton.  It seems like since the peloton is android based there should be an Android based watch that works with the bike.
