Can we discuss pet peeves here? (7 Viewers)

So you backer-inners, at the grocery store you try to maneuver your cart between the car next to you and then try to load your groceries into the trunk with someone pulled right up behind you?

Probably the same group that doesn’t leave a buffer urinal in a public bathroom
every grocery store around me has the slanted parking spots and one-way traffic, so no opportunity to back in there

You people that back into tight spaces are morons. You are just asking for door dings galore.

Go to the outer edges of the parking lot. You have so many options:

1. single pull in
2. back in
3. the pull through

And you get a little exercise walking to the front door. Plus plenty of room around you to load all your goodies.

Amateurs.......

My favorite is driving past someone "waiting" for a close spot. Drive down 20 spots to an empty park area.
Get out and walk past the car still waiting.

*I get not everyone can walk further etc but it still makes me giggle

People ( mostly Gens and Millens ) that have to BACK into a parking spot.....holding everyone up as they have to reverse....Hey Everybody, look at my jacked up HIGH 4 X 4 truck !!
This has become a thing ever since backup cameras became the norm. I hate it. It's much easier to back out into an open area than it is to back in to an enclosed space.
Disagree. There are no driving cars or pedestrians in that enclosed space
That’s what your dang backup camera is for!
Something like 90% of all accidents in parking lots are caused by people backing out of spots.
I really dislike people backing into spots, but this is the first decent argument I've seen to justify it. FTR, looks like the number is closer to 80%.

What a dumb and useless stat. How many other scenarios would there even be in parking lot accidents if one of the cars wasn't coming out of a spot? And 99% of the cars in lots are backing out of spots. If 99% of the cars all backed into spots then the same stat would apply to the backer inners.
I can imagine many other ways to get in an accident - frequently I'm almost clipped as someone cuts the corner in parking decks, for example. And my wife hit someone pulling into a spot...though she is a terrible driver.

But for full context, the stat should be calculated as a proportion of accidents that occur while backing in vs. out. And in HI at least, way more than 1% back in, probably at least a third do, especially those in ubiquitous full sized trucks/SUVs.

the biggest problem with backing in is when you're following someone in a parking lot, you see an open slot, but the guy in front of you drives past it & puts on his backup lights to take the spot you thought was available

buddy, you drove past the spot. keep on driving.
Naw homie. I ain’t letting that slide.

Seriously though, I’m not letting that happen cause I position myself at an angle to get into the spot in one (EASY) attempt. Mobbin ain’t driving past the spot and you shouldnt be that close anyway, part-nah!
thankfully i just point my fingerguns out the window and people get the message :pirate:

eta: can we change :pirate: to :bob: ?

Backer-inner needs to signal before passing the space, and you need not to tailgate.

I just put traffic cones and flares down when I am backing out.

I used to get out and pick them up after but i learned that 94% of parking lot accidents involve pedestrians and look, I get it, its an inconvenience to everybody else, but do y'all really want to admit that you are against safety?

I figure the cart guy can just pick them up. Plus then I am doing my part in keeping him busy, (in addition to not putting my cart back) because as we all know grocery stores are definitely not hiring everywhere right now.

Oh my God we're back to arguing about backing into parking spaces again? I guess it has been 12 pages since it was brought up so it's overdue... I'll see if I can remember all the highlights.

  • Backing in is safer. There are no pedestrians lurking in the empty space I'm backing into. If I am backing out, guess what....I'm backing into pedestrian-land.
  • Some people can't back in quickly, and have to reverse-forward-reverse again. I see people everyday that can't back out very well either, so either you're waiting on them to park, or to back out...same wait either way.
  • Some people drive company owned vehicles. Rule #1 of my company's driving agreement is that if I am operating my vehicle in reverse in a parking lot and hit someone/something/some other car, then I am automatically at fault and will lose the company vehicle perk at a minimum, termination at worst. So sit there and fume while I back into my space and block you from trying to hawk a spot that's 10 feet closer to the door, I ain't getting fired over here.
This part isn't true. When you back out of a parking spot you have to wait for the lane to clear. You would be at fault if you just reversed out and got hit.

When you back into a spot, me and the other 6 cars behind me have to stop and roll our eyes while we wait for you.

Could you imagine what Christmas at the mall would be like if everyone chose to back into their spots? A 5 minute process would turn into 30 minutes.

Just apologize for being a horrible person and move along sir.

Or possibly less accidents overall ........

May or may not have been mentioned before but people that answer the phone only to say I need to call you back
My mom will answer her phone regardless of location or whether she recognizes the number. On the golf course and a probable spam? She answers. Family dinner and a call from a random friend? She answers.

May or may not have been mentioned before but people that answer the phone only to say I need to call you back
I have a buddy who used to often call me and then immediately put me on hold.

*click*

I don’t even understand the concept of being put on hold. Just call me back.

Have a friend that would call and then proceed to navigate her family living while i'm on the phone with her. Telling their kids to take a bath, calling the husband in the other room to take out the trash, yelling at the dog for getting on the couch...exhausting. Now I just tell her to call back when she has more free time.

This is false. Backing into a space takes longer, on average, than backing out. The argument boils down to whether the potential safety afforded by backing in is worth extra time and inconvenience, individually and collectively.

My BIL only cuts on his cell phone when he is calling someone. Otherwise he turns it off. My mom used to do that but we finally convinced her to leave it on.

All this back up parking lot talk is causing me to have flashbacks when I was a recent college grad and took an auto claims adjuster job so I wouldn’t have to move back in with the parents.

Monday morning in claims was when all the two-people-backing-out-of-spaces-in-the-wal-mart-parking-lot claims day. Every adjuster was guaranteed to get assigned one.

Funny thing was everyone was done backing and already in drive when this idiot backed right into them.

It does? How/why so?

Go to your average parking lot and watch for a while and you'll have your answer.
I didn’t realize people thought they took the same amount of time…maybe that’s part of the problem.

I’d guestimate it takes 5-20 seconds longer to back in, on average, and sometimes much longer. I’d be surprised if anyone backs in more quickly.

You ever watch people backing out? If there is a car within 100 yards they wait. The problem is terrible drivers, not the back in or out aspect
I can easily drive past a tentative backer-outer. This is not the case when people back-in.

Hey electronics manufacturer’s - how about you design a power cord longer than 3-4 feet. You know, people put tv’s and stereos and such on stands and shelves and things like that.

I’m looking at you Firestick.
but how else will they sell you multiple extension cords?!?

You arent understanding him. He literally thinks both of their time is equal. If a person is waiting for traffic to clear before backing out or a person is taking longer to back in. He considers these to be equal. Not the actual action itself. He means total time from firing up the car until completion. To him there is no concept of consideration here.

Not really a pet peeve. More like a thermonuclear peeve. Dirctv and Disney are in another dispute. Why is this a thing every year?

Im in Philly at a hotel trying to watch the USC/LSU game and when I turned the TV channel to ABC the screen informed me that "Our contract with Disney, the owner of this channel, has expired".

Currently watching it on my iphone.

I think it may have cut off the end of the tennis match with Goff. My thoughts are unlikely to pass the filters here.

Had a fun experience just yesterday in a small busy store lot. I picked an aisle and turned right to go down it looking for any open spot. Van traveling the opposite direction is stopped on my left. Up ahead of me is a car stopped on the right. I wasn't really sure what was going on until I realized the one up in front had their reverse lights on (they were hard to see in the sunlight) and left blinker on. Car parked on the left in between the two stopped vehicles starts pulling out of a spot and I realize that both the van and the car ahead are both planning on backing into that spot and I doubt either one sees the other. Meanwhile, I realize as the parked car gets out and is now pointed my way that no one is going anywhere if I don't move, because the van next to me and I are blocking their way out. So I decide I'm getting out of this as quickly as possible, pull forward and around the car ahead of me as they start backing up. They, of course, start wailing their horn at me because they think I'm pulling forward into the spot they were waiting for. I just waved as I went by and got out of there. Didn't end up seeing how things resolved with two vehicles backing into the same spot.

Should have taken the spot anyway

When my wife asks my opinion on something, like what we should do for dinner, or what we should sell some random junk on marketplace for, and then I get to hear for the next 25 minutes about what she was thinking to convince me to go with her thing. Why ask me?
So I called her on it and hear for 40 minutes how she respects my opinion and wants to share in decision making.

I just want to watch football.
