Can we discuss pet peeves here? (4 Viewers)

Up there with grownups plugging their noses when jumping feet first into the pool are the grownups that cover their ears with their hands when a cop siren goes off or a dog starts barking or a noise is louder than normal. Man up, Teddy Sniffles.

If i wanted to put my garbage in there and be a Richard, I could still go through the app process.
But people that would do this generally won't go throug the hassle of the process. It's just an added protection to make it just a little more difficult to be a total d-bag

When we get there, we learned that in order to open the bin, you need to (1) download the app; (2) open an account; (3) verify your email; (4) read and agree to the rules; and (5) send a message from your phone, to space, and then to the bin 18" away to unlock it.
Seems like it's a one time thing to load/sign up for the app and now you have it, it should be a quick transaction from now on.
why not just have it as open the door and dump the stuff in. App seems overkill and ridiculous.
Exactly. It says in big writing on the side "THIS IS NOT FOR TRASH! COMPOST ONLY!" If i wanted to put my garbage in there and be a Richard, I could still go through the app process.
Mmm, this reminds me of another one of my peeves: when people throw their trash in YOUR trash bins when they're by the curb ready for pickup.

Especially when they put TRASH in the bin that's only for yard waste.

I know it was our trashy neighbors across the street... they've done it before. Last week they put an old wooden box/cooler thing in my yard waste bin. I pulled it out and put it in our regular trash bin, since I didn't want the trash company to get on my butt for having it mixed into the yard waste.

Jerks.

People who pinch their nose when jumping into water.
 I *never* do this, but for some odd reason I felt the urge to do so this past Thursday when I took a dip in my hotel's pool. Have no idea what compelled me to do so.
Were there lots of kids? Maybe instinctual reaction to keep kids snot and feces out of your nose.
Nope, was the only one in the pool. It was 110 degrees.
I am surprised you didn't roast some nuts at that water temp

I kept myself cool with a couple of adult beverages. And the water was actually quite refreshing (not 110 degrees)...

Also now they don't have to hire people to sit there and give direction and monitor.
They don't hire anyone to do that at HS games (at least not the HS's in this area). It's typically a teacher, coach, parent, or student that is doing this. It's not someone that they "hire" specifically for game management.
Either way, they still have to coordinate and schedule people to do this which is a pain (and non paid people are unreliable). An app removes this headache. Time is money.
But it doesn't remove the headache as you still need someone at the door checking the phones to see the tickets were purchased. It really doesn't change anything other than the handling of money.
this is a massive pet peeve of mine when trying to get in to Lambeau

no more ripping tickets, or even having someone standing there with a hand scanner, now you need to have the tickets in an app on your phone. which you then have to line up precisely with the scanner that's about waist height.

needing to have the ticket app open apparently surprises a fair number of people, who wait until they get to the ticket verification process to open the app... but they may be too drunk to operate the phone..or there are connectivity issues.. or their wife has the tickets on her phone, which is .... somewhere.

each "improvement" has vastly slowed the ingress process. especially when it's cold outside and people are pulling off gloves to access their phones at the absolute last possible second.

used to be able to pull up to Lambeau at 11:30 and be in the seats by 11:50. nearly exactly every time. now we're there at 11 - 11:15 and sitting down 3-5 minutes before kick.

Buddy, this is AWFUL! I bought 3 extra tix to the opening Oregon Ducks game this year using some 3rd rate website to buy tickets. Transferred them to my wife's phone since she was going to be sitting there with 2 of the kids. Figured it would all be fine. Well, getting to the stadium with 60K other people in an area of the state that's not exactly urban tends to jam up phones and so people trying to access tickets on their phones absent any connectivity means all sorts of chaos. It's awful. Bring back the option for paper tickets. Technology is not always your friend.

Oh, and we weren't getting into that game without a kindly security guard taking pity on us - one of my sons was about to cry. He saw my two tickets that I had saved to my wallet (which my wife neglected to do, but still, should have been able to access tickets we paid for) and said 'look, I believe you bought these, I'm going to let you guys on through'.

And because of this nice security guard taking pity on us and saving our day, I gave him a handshake with a $20 bill in the palm of my hand. Why? BECAUSE I STILL USE CASH, OFFDEE. IT IS STILL THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF LOVE!!!!!!!!!!111111111 I'm not bribing a security guard with an AMEX.
last year we, and hundreds of others, got stuck behind some drunken lout who couldn't figure out the password to the app he thought he had loaded the tickets to and buddy would not step aside to let others through as he fumbled through figuring it out.

the 16? 17? year old girl helping people with the ticket scanner had no authority to do anything and nobody wanted to start a riot by shoving the guy out of the way so we all stood there listening to people screaming at him to move ... until he just turned and walked away.

first time i ever missed opening kickoff.

Anyplace that limits you to just cash or credit seems to be limiting their customer base. My MLB team's ballpark at least has reverse ATMs so you can convert your cash into a debit card. Wouldn't want to miss any money when buying overpriced concessions.

Ok so back to travel pet peeves...

Peeve A:
People who aren't in the next group lining up and blocking the boarding area. Blech.

If you're in group 3, don't stand there when they haven't even called one yet. If you're in group 8, don't stand in the line there when they just called group 2. People have to actually get by you now, and it's slower for all of us.

Peeve B:
Self-appointed rule enforcers. Let the flight attendants and other airline personnel do their job. You gain nothing by trying to do it.

Example: I'm flying as a solo parent (wife working again, so I'm taking baby boy to his grandparents). Some of you know from the other thread that I fly a LOT. I'm CK with American. So I've just got a backpack, diaper bag, and stroller (you try to pack for a week for a baby without having to check a bag). It's a 7am flight because I don't like to fly with a bunch of once/year travelers mucking things up and they tend not to take Monday 7am flights. I'm dressed in total athleisure. They call CK (you board early so nobody bothers you and you can get situated. Minorly useful for work travel, INCREDIBLY useful for leisure travel), so I walk up to board. This ****ing guy, in a suit, PUTS HIS HAND ON MY SHOULDER and says "Excuse me, they haven't called families yet."

It is the closest I have come to slapping someone in public in a very long time. But I have a baby and I need to set a good example. So I calmy took his hand off my shoulder, put mine on his, and said "Yes, friend, but they did call Concierge Key, so why don't you mind your own and wait your turn." The look was priceless. Mouth agape, kinda dumb...so I just patted him on the shoulder and told him to have a good one. Got to the actual boarding pass scanning like 5 steps later and the attendant was like "oh man Mr. Instinctive, I am so sorry, if there's anything we can do for you..." Easy - "Not your fault, you're doing great. Hope you have a good day, thank you!" with a giant smile.

Who thinks they want to be that guy? Does he get it right like one out of 5 times and it makes his day that the person like...waits five minutes and then boards when he does? It seems insane!!!

Screwed is a relative term. Uncle Sam won’t get his portion. and if the server chooses to not tip the support staff from the cash tip, that’s more money for them.

Well there is also the issue of the CC processing %. So either the restaurant is eating this, which sucks for them, or the server is which sucks.
The server is not. That fee, like everything else, is just part of doing business.

I saw one of these at the Ducks hockey game a couple weeks ago and was like "huh?"

oh yeah ...reaction

Also for you non cash folk.... around me a lot of the pizza joints, restaurants are charging you 2.5 -3% extra if you pay by CC. They are passing the fee on
I figured everyone is passing the fees on to the customer. I appreciate it when places like the pizza joints you mention make it explicit and give you the option of paying less with cash so you can avoid the fee if you want to.

The server is not. That fee, like everything else, is just part of doing business.
Perhaps every single time this comes up on reddit or other various forums the servers are lying when they say the restaurant they work at started charging them 3%ish of their credit card tips, but i doubt it.

Speaking of apps, needing an app for everything is starting to be a major pet peeve.

For example, an environmental club at our high school is trying to get a compost program off the ground by having a bin behind the school, which is close to our house. My wife wants to support it so she saved up all our food scraps and coffee grounds for the week and we walked over to drop them off last night. When we get there, we learned that in order to open the bin, you need to (1) download the app; (2) open an account; (3) verify your email; (4) read and agree to the rules; and (5) send a message from your phone, to space, and then to the bin 18" away to unlock it.

This whole process took 20 minutes just to walk over and dump our food scraps, and because my wife had left rice on the stove (another pet peeve - why insist on this outing when you have something on the stove?), it led to us eating burnt dinner.
I’m gonna guess you carry cash.
I think one can dislike cluttering their phone with apps, the time it takes to load/register them, dealing with notifications, etc., without being a cash-carrying member of the cloud-yelling curmudgeons.

Apps are limited to one screen on my phone, though there’s a few extra in the library. Never carry cash, except when traveling.

Wife and I have been having it out lately stemming from these peeves. Has a nail appointment with my daughter. Hey you have cash? Me just enough for tonight.

Well can you stop and give me yours. I asked you to get extra when you stop

I was in a mood and basically said you knew about this appointment for two weeks why did you stop to get cash

Some excuse, then says you know I always run late

Then of course I say how about you be on time for once. You are allowed to stop yourself

Fun morning
Who uses cash anymore?

Valet, restaurants, hotel staff, car service, hardware store, bars, hostesses, etc.
Restaurants, hardware stores and bars all take credit card.
Never tip on the CC .. servers get screwed
How so?
Screwed is a relative term. Uncle Sam won’t get his portion. and if the server chooses to not tip the support staff from the cash tip, that’s more money for them.

they also get the money immediately. Many restaurants pay the CC tips out Weekly
So, if the server is a weasel, not reporting taxes or sharing with coworkers, they should be rewarded?

Delaying pay is a better argument, though it’s hardly “getting screwed” by receiving a paycheck, like most of the rest of the working world.

Wait, are some restaurants shifting cc fees to servers? If so, that does suck.

It doesn’t suck for restaurants to “eat” the fee, or passing it on to their patrons, as they’re benefiting from the business/convenience cc payments provide.

By law you don't need to claim all your tips, just percentage of food served. CC tips are automatically taxed. You get a paycheck based on hours worked just like everyone else mr smartguy

So screwed

Settings / Notifications / scroll down to the app, click on it, and turn off all notifications. WA LA!

Yeah, I know, and do this religiously. Also turn off tracking and data usage for most apps.

Still requires extra effort, particularly if it's something you don't/won't use frequently.

There may be a wrinkle I'm missing, but I think you're mistaken, mr misguided guy. Directly from the IRS:
Do I have to report all my tips to my boss?
If you received $ 20.00 or more in tips in any one month, you should report all your tips to your employer so that federal income tax, social security and Medicare taxes, and maybe state income tax can be withheld.
Do I have to report all my tips on my tax return?
Yes. All tips are taxable income and should be reported on your tax return.
I was told that I had to report only a certain percentage of my total sales as tips. Is this true?
No. You must report to your employer all (100%) tips you receive, except for the tips from any month that do not total at least $20.00.
Also, there's no reason workers earning tips shouldn't receive paychecks reflecting all wages, just like the rest of us.

Not screwed.

The server is not. That fee, like everything else, is just part of doing business.

Ok.

I've been in the restaurant business for a million years. I have yet to experience this or hear about it happening. I have worked for giant restaurant companies and mom and pop shops. I have never experienced this and have never heard anyone say that the restaurant was taking the CC company fee off the top of their tips on CCs.

I said it was a relative term. Apply your own morals to the situation.

Fair enough.

But as you astutely note, the vast majority of payments are cc anyway. So it’s tough to commiserate with anyone “getting screwed” by virtue of missed opportunities to evade taxes on a small fraction of their pay.

Could be an isolated incident but one thing I noticed on a recent vacation in Europe was that in two separate airports, about 85% of the travelers sat patiently waiting for their group to get called. Amazing how smooth things go when people are orderly.

The Instinctive story reminded me of a story.

On vacation with whole family, my sister mentioned going to Starbucks. There is one like 10 minutes away and it's the only one in the area of the beach town we stay at.

She says doesn't want to wait etc

I say oh you don't know about their new app you can order ahead. The app just came out.

So I order, we drive over, she says I'll grab the coffees. I tell her just go down where you pick up drinks, they should be there or the barista has it to the side.

There's a huge line, sister stars to walk in, says excuse me, and this woman says, excuse me but the line starts back there and points.

My sister ignores her goes picks up her drinks and says something like thanks for letting me know where the back of the line is as she walked out

If i wanted to put my garbage in there and be a Richard, I could still go through the app process.
But people that would do this generally won't go throug the hassle of the process. It's just an added protection to make it just a little more difficult to be a total d-bag
It also makes it more difficult to dispose of your compost as intended. I would just throw my stuff in the trash if I had screw around with an app (lol) to compost it.

Kind of the opposite of a pet peeve for me, but there's not much better feeling than seeing/feeling the looks of people in a long line when you have the cheat code to skip it. For me, it's usually the post office when I've prepaid and labeled my packages and know I can just go up and leave them on the counter. Especially fun during the holidays when the line's out the door and the next person in line at the door thinks they are the gatekeeper.

Not the first time this has been mentioned I'm sure, but "small talk" annoys me. And sometimes people have nothing else to say or they're trying to be nice but it serves no purpose...

My wife on her way out this morning: What do you have planned for today, just chillin?

I had major surgery 5 days ago and am pretty limited on what I can do. I'm not even sure if I can put on socks by myself yet. Maybe I should have answered "putting on socks!" :ROFLMAO:

wife hit me with that one the day after a surgery i had that wound up laying me full out for a week, not going back to work for 3 weeks.

ONE DAY

i'm laying on the couch, sweating, shaking and unable to move without pain and she says "were you planning on going out today at all?"

me: WHAT????!!

her: well, we're out of paper toweling and need toilet paper. i have meetings all day and you don't have to go to work at all...

me: i can't even sit upright, can barely move and may just urinate on the couch because i won't be able to walk to the bathroom on my own.. but... sure, i'll hop in the car and drive to get those things instead of you grabbing them after work.

I agree. I was just giving a reason why the bin wasn't just open to the public. Typically the public is terrible and will ruin good things for others.

:laughreaction:

She never fails to amaze.

If i wanted to put my garbage in there and be a Richard, I could still go through the app process.
But people that would do this generally won't go throug the hassle of the process. It's just an added protection to make it just a little more difficult to be a total d-bag

Yes, living in a low-trust community sucks.

Isn't that all communities? I have found that most everyone is selfish and do what they want regardless of the public rules for stuff such as this. Generally, people just suck.

To my wife's credit hers wasn't like that at all, she's just a master of small talk. She feels bad for barely having to do anything. I have PT tomorrow morning and plan to drive myself. She asked me what time it's scheduled (first thing) and was sad that on her only day to finally sleep in she'll have to get up early. No need to get up early, I'll drive myself. She'll hear nothing of it though so I might have to sneak out before she wakes up.
