Can we discuss pet peeves here? (11 Viewers)

The yellow, diamond-shaped sign first arrived on the market in 1984. Michael Lerner, a successful recruiter at the time, was apparently approached by a friend who wanted advice on how to market the signs. Lerner wasn't a parent, but he was reportedly sold on the idea from his experience driving around with his 18-month-old nephew.

“People were tailgating me and cutting me off,” he told the Wall Street Journal. “For the first time, I felt like a parent feels when they have a kid in the car.”

The idea is that people will drive more safely around a vehicle they know has a baby in the backseat -- and what parent doesn't want to keep their baby safe? So Lerner invested his own money in the product and started up the company Safety 1st, which is now owned by the Canadian company Dorel Industries.

The signs, which are usually placed in the back window of a car, were an instant hit. USA Today reported that 10 million have been sold in the past 30 years.

Some emergency workers have found the caution signs to be useful for other reasons. In case of an accident, for example, this noticeable sign can alert emergency personnel that there is a child in the vehicle who might not be able to get themselves out, says Julie Townsend, the deputy chief executive of the UK road safety charity Brake.

I always assumed these were to alert cops/paramedics/first responders in the event of a wreck that there's someone inside the car that may not be able to free themselves or speak out.

Although it does make sense in today's society that someone would want to announce "my precious snowflake child is in this car, so be extra careful"...
I took it as a "look out- driver is likely distracted by kids" sign, so do my best to steer clear or get around then quickly

i hate the motorized fat carts that are allowed in stores now.  these aren’t for handicapped folks, because they have their own rascals to get around everyday, these are strictly for folks too fat to walk in a store.  i am all for ADA, but just because you ate yourself to the point of not being able to move yourself doesn’t mean i need to look both ways while grocery shopping.  also, they have horns, that annoying meep sound.

watch the fat car please

- People who go in reverse on a highway bc they missed their exit should have their licenses instantly suspended for 10 years. Sometimes I wish I had a monster truck so I could run one of these #######s over.

- If there is an accident on the other side of a highway, with a divider between you and the other side, there should never be traffic on your side. I hate people... look forward, who cares, keep driving - morons!

Is this a joke?  I can’t imagine anybody being that stupid and yes I realize this country is full out stupid people.

They back up while on the shoulder. Yes it's a thing. And largely agree it's stupid. However if your on say the PA turnpike where the next exit is 30 miles , I'd allow it

Cell phone etiquette is out of control.

Whenever anyone has a split second to wait, out comes the phone. Lines have longer waits, people are getting much more rude at the restaurant table, etc. The world is happening beyond the little box in your hand.

It's sad to watch a family sitting in a restaurant with their phones out.  They might as well be in different countries.

Why though - who cares?  Instead of watching other families and letting their habits affect your emotions, just focus on your family and your meal.

If other parents didnt hate their kids so much that they didnt want to talk to them at all this world would be a much better place.

local news station just ran an ad for a local race of some sort. not sure which because i couldn't focus after the narrator said camaraderie and they flashed the word "cormradery" on the screen.

You gotta be ####ting me?

Prob one of the most dangerous things an idiot motorist can do... Next exit is 30 miles? If that is the case, these idiots might benefit from slowing down, paying attention to signs, paying attention to navigation systems, and not being morons. Then they wouldn't miss their exit - since they're partaking in this behavior, I'd assume they're really stupid and not doing any of the aforementioned.

Reserved parking spaces are beginning to rankle me.  I go to my local supermarket and there are spots for handicapped, if you placed your grocery order online in advance, if you are a veteran or if you have children.  I drive a mile to the store then park 2 miles away.

I was thinking more in the days of maps.   Yeah with GPS there is no excuse.

Where is this? Of course SA is Military City USA, so unless you had about 1,000 of them, they'd be filled 24/7 anyways.

In the "it's probably a legitimate alternate pronunciation, but I don't care because it annoys me anyway" category:

'Forward' pronounced without the first 'r' sound, like foe-word.  I notice it a lot on sports radio and it hurts my ears.

Just opened the elevator door as it was closing because somebody gave a hollar from the lobby from out of my eyesight. Wait a couple seconds and they slowly saunter in. No nod, no thank you, nothing.

Doesn't help my mood that they were hassidics- notorious group of #### you out of my way mine me mine takers with typically absolute disregard for the people and world around them in the city.

Complaining about the moderation is shooting to the top of my list.  Want to have a conversation about it in a thread dedicated to the subject?  Great.  Want to poop in every thread with the slightest bit of hint to something questionable? Schtick has run its course in a matter of days.

Over moderation

My response to this would get me a permanent ban so I’ll move on

Can’t remember if we have a separate corporate jargon thread but I can overhear another conference call and some guy keeps saying Stay In Our Swim Lanes...

Minor item, but whenever a show has multiple guests (whether its a talk show or a music show), I wish the onscreen description would list them in the order that they appear. A local cable show actually does this and it makes it easy to fast forward to the guest/artist that you wanted to see most.

Sunday afternoon, everyone in town is at Walmart doing their grocery shopping for the week, >90% of the shoppers in there have a cart full of stuff.  There's 3 checkout lanes open with a belt and a cashier, they're 8 deep at each one, and they have 5 employees milling around the register area directing people to the shorter lines at the self-checkout area (8 registers there).

I am not about to self-check 40+ items and deal with 100+ bagging area alerts.  Quit wandering around and open more registers!  This irritates the absolute sh!t out of me.

Just to tack on to this, how about sports channels showing old games not spoiling the finish by putting full descriptions of the finish and final score? If it were a movie board they would be hanging them for giving away the finish for Citizen Kane.

This drives us nuts.  Why do they even bother to show the game if they are going to give away the score?

Im too lazy to read through this thread to see if it has already been mentioned, but I hate when people don’t read through a thread to see if whatever they are posting was already mentioned.

Had to bump this one because I forgot a couple of huge ones watching some MLB tonight....

MLB pitchers (mostly relievers) that when they are in the stretch and start going into the “set” position feel the need to go all MC Hammer and do a bunch of funky ### twitching, pumping, leg humping, salsa dancing bull####......just come set for gods sake....

also....MLB talks about “trying to speed up the game”.....yet ANYTIME a pitch grazes the dirt, we have to call timeout and replace the ball.....seriously?....one little dirt spot is that big of a deal....can pitchers really do some Jedi/ninja/Matrix bull#### with a ball with a tiny scuff/dirt mark....but yet if the batter hits a 10 hop ground ball to deep short, throws it in the dirt and first baseman scoops it and we just toss it back to the pitcher and we play on....how did we ever get a hit in little league/high school....?

and do basketball players at ANY level really need to get a low five/fist bump after a free throw....They play the whole game making amazing plays, but we have to wait and let them give five for a 15 foot shot with nobody guarding them....

From what I can see the rule is twofold. The pitcher can’t doctor the ball himself but if he allows the batter to make contact he can utilize the now legally scuffed ball.

Why do people do these "page 2 bumps"?  Um, OMG, the thread isn't going anywhere, Jenifer.
Quality contribution to the thread right there....thanks for participating...any post is a bump....thanks for bumping for no reason which is actually worse than what you were complaining about....potential pet peeve right there....Felicia
