Car Market going forward (3 Viewers)

Is anyone on here a dealer or have access to full Carfax/etc. vehicle reports? My wife is interested in a used Infinity QX50 that has a damage report on it via the free online reports, but the owner says it was a minor incident that only involved paint scratches and no body damage. I have no issues paying for a full report for peace of mind but thought I'd check on here first.
This is what I use. I've purchased 4 car fax reports from them. It's $5 for a complete carfax. They email you a link and the carfax is available for 30 days. I just download it and save it as a pdf.

https://www.autovhr.com/deal/
Here is a link for a cheap car fax. It makes it available online for 30 days and you can download it. I think the price is like $8 now.
When did carfax become so expensive? What are my better options to find history on used cars I’m looking at?

Is verifyauto.vin a legit site?

What should I know and be smart about when looking at a car with a rebuilt title?
Does this give you an actual Car Fax report or is it another, similar report?

I'm looking at a vehicle with 120k miles and the dealer says they can't say for sure whether the timing belt has been replaced. Googling says Car Fax would show it but Autocheck doesn't. Seems kind of weird the dealer says they don't know.
I doubt carfax would show it either especially since the dealership has no record of it. Without some disassembling it’s really impossible to tell so I’d assume it needs to be done, especially at that mileage. It’s like just past where I should be done so I’d assume they haven’t yet.
Looks like Carfax can have timing belts. The vehicle I mentioned above doesn't show it (it actually shows very little, so it's possible it's been done but just wasn't recorded), but another vehicle I checked does have it. However, that vehicle is at 180k miles and the timing belt was done at 80k. Not sure why someone does the timing belt that early, but it now puts this car likely in need of one soon. Then again, maybe I'm a sucker for timing belt horror stories. Maybe it can go a bit longer and I shouldn't feel the need to do it right away.

That link above is great for cheap Carfax reports!
I would think though that if it shows up on a carfax report then it would show up when the dealership pulls up the maintenance record that was recorded.
Different car. The one at the dealership doesn’t show a timing belt on Carfax so I think he’s being honest that he doesn’t know. I see it on a car I’m considering buying from a private owner, so I at least know it can show up.

Ugh, car buying sucks.

Just went to look at a 2008 Honda Pilot with 180k miles on it. It's a private owner. Her ad listed a bunch of upgrades. It has an aftermarket backup camera and Apple CarPlay and new sound system. She added LED headlights and a hitch which would be nice for to put my bike rack on. Remote start. Several other upgrades. CarFax looked pretty good with regular service. As I mentioned above, this car likely needs a new timing belt soon, but the history looked good other than that.

She posted it a couple weeks ago asking $7750, highlighting all the upgrades as why this Pilot is so much better than others of similar age and mileage. Price dropped to $7000 and then to $6500 the other day. So, since it dropped, I decided to take a look.

Well, one of the first things I noticed was the ceiling liner was sagging and had several large gaps where the seat belts come out for the 2nd and 3rd row seats. Sure, that doesn't change how the car runs, but it looks awful and my assumption is it's going to get worse and would hurt when I want to sell it or trade it in. Then when I drove it, it was clearly in need of an alignment and the A/C didn't work. :wall:

I might personally value it at $3000. I'd be shocked if she gets $6500 and it baffles me that she started it higher. Someone will buy it for a decent price, though, which is the reality I have to deal with and is why I continue to be on the outside looking in with the car buying process. The cars I've looked at so far are just in bad shape, but I guess people are still buying them up.

Here's hoping the next one isn't a disaster.

If a dealer has a car priced at $6,000 and they tell you that if you come in they will offer a “fantastic deal” in order to not get you to leave without the car, what kind of deal are you expecting?

Well, they came through! $6000 car and they gave us the recent college grad $500 discount since we have two kids in college. Then I got like another $150ish off from my master haggling skills.

Of course, 20 minutes after leaving, I got the gas cap warning and to check the tpms system. I messed with the gas cap but that didn’t do much. That warning just kept coming and going as I drove. I checked the tires and they were all fine so not too worried that the tpms wasn’t workin. After a couple times turning the car off and back on, the tpms warning has gone away and not come back on. Took it out again and gas cap warming still on and then the triangle with exclamation point came on. Next time the car was restarted, the ! wasn’t there anymore. So, I went to have the battery checked and it is good. Restart car and gas cap warning is now gone. Currently, no warnings, but we will see what tomorrow looks like. It seems to run just fine so not too worried.

TPMS warning for that age is bad sensor or they added air and never drove it. That autocorrect itself after like 10 miles or something

Gas cap same thing but could also be a flaky O2 sensor

Took more like 50+ miles and several off/ons, but I’m hoping it’s just an autocorrect.

What kind of car? Gas cap message usually means there is a leak detected in the EVAP system. It can be anything from a gas cap not sealing properly to a purge valve sticking open when the computer is trying to run a vacuum test on the system to check for leaks.

As was stated, the Check TPMS message means one of the sensors was not reading. More that likely the battery in the sensor is getting weak. Unfortunately, you cant replace the battery you have to replace the whole sensor. You will not notice any difference other than the message will come on and that wheel will not show pressure.

It’s an Acura TL.

Yeah, looks like people online say to replace the evap canister purge valve for the gas cap warning.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Im strongly considering buying a new Chevrolet Trax over a used Subaru.

Car is for my youngest daughter who is 18. Her grades are good she works all the time doesn’t get any trouble. She’s awesome and deserves it.

I checked out some Subarus and was not impressed with the interiors. I’m trading new and bells and whistles over long term reliability.

If I can get a dealer to sell me the RS2 trim level for 25K flat out the door, which I don’t think is asking a lot, I’ll do it.

I guess it’s time to start emailing dealers.

Her mothers 2010 Ford Edge.

I know she’s gonna bump into things which is why I’m sort of leaning for a new throwaway car over used throwaway car at roughly the same price points.

I don’t expect this car to be worth anything or even running in six years

I just meant you probably raised an intelligent woman with opinions and some sense, since she's gonna be driving it she might have some good insight for you.

I remember going through the same with my parents and it was like "guys I'm 18 it's sick to get a car at all...I don't see anything wrong with Uncle's Pontiac Vibe. If you really wanna give something for $x that's super generous but let's stick it in the "rent during college" fund yeah?"

Just a thought.

I've heard good things about them, don't know what to say other than I owned a Chevy once when I was young in my early 20s and I vowed never again but at first I liked it
By the time I was done paying it off it was time for a new car, it just didn't last

I'm not sure if that price is real or not that I sent you but this seems like a perfect car for someone 18
It took a while before I started buying Subarus, I've owned 3 of them including 2 sitting in my driveway, 1 of which is about time to sell

She chose CC over the many acceptance letters she received so she saved us a lot of $$$ there.

We would probably agree on many things if it were only up to you and I. For example, I agree with you here.

There are other factors at play and I am related to her by marriage.

Given the price of used Hondas and Toyotas and even Subarus, I don’t think it’s a bad idea. When good used cars are going for 15-20k, a new car at 25k, even if it’s a Chevy makes sense to me. My Chevy Bolt has been a great car in the first year plus.

We bought an 06 equinox in ‘07 with 12,000 miles on it. Scrapped it 2 yrs ago with 278,000 on it and never paid for anything other than standard maintenance and tires.

looking to get a 2014ish mazda 6 or cx-5 for less than 10k. I know it will have 150k miles on it, but they have good engines and should last 70k more in time for kid to buy their own car.

Get a new vehicle and take care of it and chances are you will be happy.

I stated this before as I have been in plenty of auto plants. In recent years most automakers use the same suppliers and components now. The lines these vehicles are assembled on are almost identical. Sure there will be different designs but all use the same CADs now as well.

From what I’ve read and watched, this new model Trax was done by Chevrolet’s Korean team. - Essentially they are designed and built by Hyundai designers.

This is my youngest daughter. She’s tiny and she drives like a grandma. You would think that’s awesome but in our DC/MD/VA traffic she’s a “bad” driver who will find herself always getting cut off. She could use the extra safety features and modern creature comforts.

Additionally, I am on a mission to make my life as less complicated as possible. New car = no problems for 5 years. By then she should be trading it in and buying a car on her own.

Plans have changed.

Chevrolet Trax seems fine but will likily be junk in 5 years.

Drove a 2021 Suburu Crosstrek today and it is exactly what I think she needs. Shes going to test drive it Wednesday but Dad is already sold. Hope she likes it.

Anybody have one?

You can get a brand new Crosstrek premium for the same price.

Why was there 3 owners that fast? Every manufacturer has lemons, even toyota, subaru, and honda. Are there constant issues that require the car to go to the dealership and all 3 owners got fed up with it that fast?

I don’t like the new digital speedometers. I can likely get a premium trim but that’s not the top trim level. Limited is.

The bells and whistles aren’t for her convenience, they’re for her safety.

Looks like the first owner defaulted on the loan.
Then the auction company
Then Carmax.

The big question is if the car was neglected. I’ll be taking it to my mechanic who can pull the codes and see if any low oil or high temp codes popped up.

If they haven’t I don’t have any concerns.

The only safety feature not available on the premium that is available on the limited is the RAB, reverse automatic breaking. That is when it automatically breaks when you are reversing if it senses something. Probably not the most useful of safety features.

I feel as the others do. 3 owners in a basically a year is a red flag for me . And I don’t like that it was a rental. At all. Those things might not matter, but I don’t like them.

Maybe it’s another thread but IIRC someone mentioned paying off the loan early upsetting the dealer. Another poster mentioned that if dealers would work with buyers to save a little money the buyer would carry the debt for three months.

If anyone has an inkling of what I said, please let me know of this is something I should/could hint when negotiating with the sales manager.

I ask because I’m headed to the Honda dealer. Kid HATED the Subaru.

Honda Civic it is. Plan is to go on, see what I want, tell them what I want and walk. Wait them out for the car/price I want.

Looking to get a Civic SI for under $30k

Look at the cpo hondas. Easily under 30k The sport or touring will be kinder to the insurance bill. I know nothing about your question though. GL

Used car rates constantly push me to new cars. Looking for a mid-sized truck (Tacoma, Frontier, Colorado) and it's better financially to buy new at a .9% rate vs paying all cash for something that is a few years old and saving 10k.

Well we finally got the dream car. Ever since 1990…..I have wanted a Nissan Z

I bought a new 2024 Z Performance trim.

Gun Metal on Charcoal interior…9 speed automatic with paddle shifters. All the bells and whistles.

400 HP Twin Turbo engine….this baby flies.

I have been a loyal Maxima Driver since 1990. That’s all I have been driving since I am 19 years old.

My current 2018 Maxima SR has 68K and is mint. I surprised my soon to be 20 year old son and told him I am giving him the car. He has always loved it. Pearl white with the midnight package. Still has 2 years and 32K left on the warranty too.

Man this Z is something else. A beautiful touring sports car and what a value for the price. It looks like a 65-70K sports car and I was able to get 7K knocked off the 56K MSRP. I then slapped a 8 year 125K warranty on it. This will be a garage kept vehicle for me. No doubt.

It was now or never. So we said **** it we only live once. Very happy.

Congrats! I had an 87 and a 97 Maxima - loved them both.

Very happy.

Z sounds like a super fun car to drive, that's awesome

Hope one day I get to make the same post about Eleanor.

I don't really get why they are failing. I see a ton on the road but projected to go bankrupt and potentially cease operation in 2025

So I am reading about their troubles. I think they can pull themselves out of this. But it’s quite crazy how mismanaged they are.

Most likely they will be bought by another auto company. But they need a new anchor investor.

Their US sales are actually very strong…..it’s China EV’s worldwide outside of the US that is killing them.

This is definitely something to watch in 2025.

I am thinking about getting rid of my 75 for the new one.
