Car Market going forward (5 Viewers)

I think I'm older than you, but how do you handle the "old guy having a mid life crisis in a Corvette" thing?

You can match the acceleration of the Corvette while pulling your BBQ rig.
I am such a fan of Rivian. I am waiting on the R3X which should be out next year. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a63446975/rivian-r3x-future-cars/
That will be a fun vehicle, unfortunately I think we are looking at 2028 or 2029. R2 will need to be a huge hit with minimal mis-steps if Rivian wants to stay afloat.
Wait 2028? No!!!!!!!

Since this is a thread about the car market going forward, does anyone have any insight or think that 0% financing will be coming back anytime soon, other than on vehicles that aren't moving?

To me a vehicle is just a utility to get me from point a to point b, reliably and safely in miserable weather. I spend a few hours a week in this thing and am fairly ambivalent to the manufacturer. I love my current ride, but it's coming up on 60,000 miles and I'm going to be moving in the next few years to a place where 4wd will be needed. I'm not a 'car guy', nor am I mechanically inclined, I just don't want to pay any interest on money borrowed, especially with car/suv prices being out of control (I mean, the average monthly payment is coming up on $1,000/vehicle, that's lunacy, imho)

If and when (most likely when) the fed does what will most likely be two more .25 cuts to the overnight rate I think you can see 0% to 2.9% (depending on term length) financing return.

Where are you going that 4WD is needed? Cause 60K miles is absolutely nothing, and that car will easily last another 100K
My current daily has over 200k miles, runs perfectly fine, and I don’t want to buy anything to replace it.

Going to get a home in the mountains. I suppose AWD could suffice, but, I'd also rather have something a bit higher off the ground as well.
And yeah, I'm sure my current car could last a long while longer, but honestly, I do like the peace of mind of a warranty with a new vehicle, as opposed to the butt clenching sensation every time I get when I have to bring this car to the shop.

You sir, are going to need to hand in your FBG card.
I kid I kid.

992.2 is the latest generation. 998’s don’t exist (yet).
Ok. The main point is I don't get the appeal of a Corvette over a 911 with some miles or age on it. The new vettes will never ever appreciate in value. Older Porsche eventually gain in value if kept well.
I think both are pretty cliche but I don’t see what’s so hard to understand about people having subjective preference.

Personal preference aside, I agree with your point. But I’m a Pcar guy (hence my name here) so I’m admittedly biased.

Sure. Everyone has their preferences.

Say you're looking at an expensive sports like a C8 Corvette and will spend $80,000 on it.

What is a comparable Porsche in that price range and why do you prefer it?

A 2018 911C4 can be had in that range. Maybe not easily. But it can be done.

Thanks. How would you compare a 2018 911 to an $80,000 2025 C8 Corvette?

Can the 911 be bought for that price?

Why would you prefer the 911?

I mean favourably. If I had 80k to blow on a two seater I am not going to daily drive then I'm looking for something that makes an attempt at holding its value and also doesn't look like some Temu Aventador.

But others like the look.

I'd assume favorably. Can you elaborate with lots more detail?

Performance? How many miles would you expect an $80,000 2018 to have? You just like the looks better? You don't like the looks of the Corvette? Etc.

And I wouldn't assume not a daily driver. If I were to spend that much money, I'd drive it daily.

And what is a Temu Aventador?

Lol....my last car had 240000 miles on it
385,000. The law finally closed in on me and I had to take it to the junk yard. Sad because it was driving fine.

He’s just saying he thinks it looks like a budget knockoff Lamborghini

I’ll respond more throughly later tonight when I have more time, but quickly. I’m a fan of both platforms. But Porsche in general, 911’s specifically, is another class of car. Quality, fit, and finish and driving dynamics are on a whole other level. And to be clear, I’m a Corvette fan. I’m not knocking them in anyway. In fact, I’m considered buying one (zo6).

I highly suggest you test drive both. The car that speaks to you will be very clear.

For 911s you can usually target the ones that aren't like super tuned with 40k miles on them. Are these the ones that will get you 750k in auction in 20 years, no. They still are a lot of fun to have. The $80k is a usual price target for those wanting an entry level one.

https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/lamborghini-aventador is what an aventador looks like, Temu is just a china knockoff site. The current vettes just look like knockoff svj to me.

Thanks. I'll take a look there.

I know personally, I put a high value on reliability so buying new or newish has some advantages over something older. But I'll take a look.
What do you really want, Joe? Maybe I missed it but start with what your requirements are.

For example, our search started with:
1. Needs to fit car seats behind both seats for a 6'2" driver/passenger (me)
2. Needs to fit travel cribs plus luggage in the back for trips
3. Has a tank or battery that reliably can get us 350+ miles (to Austin or OKC without a required stop and to CO with only 2-3 required stops)
4. My wife needs to enjoy driving it
5. Needs AA and Car play with a very clean UI and a decent sized screen for the map
6. We've always owned new and driven to around 100k miles (10+ years) and like that model. So we would consider a certified pre owned but needed to be low mileage and a good discount.

Our list evolved from there with some test drives, we settled on the final requirements list, and then we narrowed down to the cars that fit and went with whatever was cheapest and fit our needs.

So what are your needs?

transmission just went with 235000 miles so not fixing just buying another used car yippee who doesnt love unexpected expenses take that to the bank to pay for a car bromigos

You probably do well on just CarMax and the main ones and be willing to travel to it and ship if you like it. The real sharks shop in the 25-40k range and rehab the interior and exterior over time and resell for profit.

At 80k you are still not in the range where refurb is really a thing. I'm at the point where I'm looking at the refurb option for a 3rd car/hobby.

I've seen the new Vette in person and there's nothing about it that screams Lambo knock-off. It look like a modern updated version of the older Vettes. It's very nice.

Is it going to have the handling and track performance a 911 will give you? No. but it will have more storage space, an updated center console and will still be a super fun car to drive. Plus you'd be getting a new warranty, which is always a nice bonus versus a now 7 year old car.

I think the 911 would be more fun if you're looking for a "race car" that gives you the ultimate driving experience. I'd be choosing the Vette' if I were expecting it to be a daily driver. That's my opinion.

It's actually "modeled" after the Ferrari 458. It's not a Lambo knock-off at all, even though performance-wise it can compete with both of those at a fraction of the price.

C8 vs 458

Corvette vs Ferrari vs Lamborghini (granted, this is the Z06, but still).

Yeah, I know with the mid engine it looks more like a European supercar, but I'm just saying that in person, it still also looks like a modern Corvette. Also, it doesn't look cheap in person... it's a great looking car.

Really cool seeing it destroy those supercars on the drag strip. Even the Z06 version is less than half the price of those things.

Thanks. That's how I saw it on the looks. I don't follow enough of the super expensive cars to know other than to know I thought the Corvette looks amazing.

Something for me on this would be a daily driver. So dependability and reliability would be key.

I've done the old cool car several times. I drove a renovated 1957 Chevrolet in 1987. My next car in 1990 was a 1970 Cadillac convertible. I had a disastrous experience with an old, cool, woody Jeep Wagoneer a few years back. I get the appeal of an older car and the cool factor.

I also get it's sweet to hit the remote start on a 30 degree day and feel confident it'll start and know the heated seats are on. Or to take off on a 500 mile road trip without too much worry. That kind of thing.

For the Porsche comparison, I was hoping for some actual detail and thoughts beyond it'll be worth 750k in 20 years or that the Corvette looks like a Temu knockoff.

It is pretty easy to find in the 80k range, it is the 30k range where you need to worry about what preventative maintenance has been performed that is tricky. The older porsches needed IMS bearing maintenance.

I buy lots of cars, 2022 Tacoma, 2020 WRX, 2019 Ram 1500, 2018 Pilot, etc. At 80k you are limited to mostly dealers, although if you have the cash/financing to swing it then something like bring a trailer or private party is an option. If you are looking into private party, there are some forums similar to yours that have cars for sale sections. That is where i would start first. Then you would be looking at shipping it from somewhere in the country though.

If I get rid of the boat I would buy another fun car as well, but it would probably be a corolla GR or WRX since I want the back seats.

My 2004 Civic was rear ended back in January, going 5 mph. 116k on it, paid off. Totalled. Was really bummed out, although it DID need some engine work (was overheating slightly)

Then the insurance company cut a check for almost $8k. I'm a tall guy with a tall wife and a tall toddler so def needed to upgrade.

LETS GET A TRUCK!

Shopped and shopped and eventually landed on a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi with 77k miles on it, in literal great condition.

The lot we got this off of was SO packed, they had to drive 7 cars just to get to this truck, they had on their lot for 2 months.

Was easily able to negotiate a cash price

Now Its weird I already hate Ford and Chevy trucks

Is this normal

Yes. Soon you'll be buying tshirts from convenience stores that say things like "If you can't Dodge Em, Ram Em".

You're going to have 6 nearly identical black Dodge Ram hats sitting on your dashboard soon.... You'll be the only person can tell the difference in them.

I have an 04 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 quad cab long bed. Such an awesome platform. I acquired it after a Jasper crate engine was put in as well as a rebuilt tranny. Currently has ~350k miles and still going.

There is maintenance on these vehicles especially if you daily them. I don't, but I still keep up with it being an older vehicle.

If you live in a salt state, get the undercarriage coated.

I’m not sure I’d call a tranny going out after nearly a quarter million miles unexpected, but it does still stink. Sorry for your luck.

-guy with 204k on the odometer right now.

We are still slowly shopping for an SUV still. We test drove the pilot and Hyundai/kia of the same size of the pilot. Our timeline for purchase could be anytime, but before our summer trip it would be good.

My wife's pilot is missing adaptive cruise, lane departure warning, and sirius xm which are needed for 10+ hour drives, but not typically used for daily driving.

We didn't go with it for other reasons, but I was pleased with the Subaru Outback (Ascent is even bigger I think?) adaptive cruise and lane keeping. Worked well and didn't need mapping - like it kept working on roads in the backwoods UP Michigan when I rented one - if there was a lane, it could keep with curves and everything.

The ascent has CVT and while it is uncommon i have towed a few times with my wife's pilot. We have AWD and a 5k tow capacity as mandatory features, especially if i want to get rid of my truck.

Yes, i see where an ascent has a 5k towing capacity, but i would be wary of how long it would last towing. Subaru cvt's are already known for going out at 125k-175k miles.

Had an Acsent as a rental one time. Great vehicle. Basically a big Outback with more bells and whistles (and more seating). Too big for my needs, but a nice vehicle for a family.

my lady drives our big car and i drive smaller and smaller cars for gas mileage as i chase basketball tournaments all over gods green earth i feel like i am decidedly against the grain but honestly it is helping me with the prices of cars sedans are soooo much cheaper than suvs and trucks right now take that to the bank bromigos

You're going to have 6 nearly identical black Dodge Ram hats sitting on your dashboard soon.... You'll be the only person can tell the difference in them.
:lmao:

Yes

I have an 04 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 quad cab long bed. Such an awesome platform. I acquired it after a Jasper crate engine was put in as well as a rebuilt tranny. Currently has ~350k miles and still going.

There is maintenance on these vehicles especially if you daily them. I don't, but I still keep up with it being an older vehicle.

If you live in a salt state, get the undercarriage coated.
Thanks man! Did the research and ya know, 20 years old and all here in SoCal the saltwater really doesn't have any effect on those. I feel I read most of that was from driving around salty roads in snowy areas.

Anyway, thanks for the info too

Bought a new truck last week. Didn't really plan it for any other reason than that's how it worked out. Feeling good about the timing right now.
What ya get? My wife and I have had both cars paid off for 10 years. Lately I've been fighting getting a new truck.
2025 ram 1500 bighorn. Rides like floating on a cloud. So far I love it.

ETA I also had a paid off truck for 10 years but it was starting to nickel and dime me, so it was time while it still had decent trade in value.
