Car Market going forward (9 Viewers)

I know. 12.4 miles from work. Average commute is an hour fifteen.
No ****ing chance I could ever do this. My god

With no traffic it’s 23-25 minutes.

I told her that if I ever get transferred to her building - Im taking the metro.
Or ride a bike. You’ll arrive there quicker than driving in rush hour, and get in excellent shape, assuming you make it alive.

Signed,

Reformed commuter cyclist, with 15 mile commute, and two bike-vs.-motor vehicle experiences.

Holy cow, yeah, that's nuts, I'd lose it. Not sure what kind of money could make me go through that. Twice, daily??? I wouldn't mind seeing a thread/poll on that. Especially with the demographic here.

Whenever you go somewhere together, what happens if she wants to drive?

Co-worker just had his 2022 GMC Sierra AT4 6.2L with 75,000 miles blow the engine. It's seized up and a new engine is $10,900.
Did he purchase it new? Tell him to try to get assistance from GM. He will have a better shot at getting more assistance if he bought it new or has had many GM vehicles. Either way, he should get some. There is a problem with the 6.2 crank bearings seizing up and GM knows it. We have had vehicles with as few as 6000 miles have the engine lock up. Good luck getting a hold of engine though. We have had to wait as long as 6 weeks to get one. Have him double check on the cost or get an itemized estimate because The 6.2 is listing right now for approx 3K.

I find it hard to believe that others find a one hour commute hard to believe.

They recently started Flex Time where she can go in earlier or later but that doesn’t always jive with when the big wigs are in so she is often there for “normal” hours.

Again, she is fairly compensated.

I wouldn't buy a Ford. My youngest daughter has a 2016 Edge and the engine was replaced at 60,000 miles
Dozens of other little things too. Molding stips coming off. Seal around door leaking. Brakes don't last.
Their quality has gone way down.

I have a 2014 Durango that has been the best car I've ever owned. Last year they were part of Mercedes and it shows.
167,000 and has original brakes. ZF trans is easily the best I have driven.

However, I feel like I'm on borrowed time with it. Been looking at going a bit smaller now that my girls are adults.

I feel like now may be a good time to move on from it.

As a guy who changes his wife’s 2010 brakes twice a year -I can confirm - The calipers/brake system on the ford edges are undersized. I looked into upgrading and it was cost prohibitive.

We have also replaced the engine, transfer case and a few other items. With all its problems it’s still a beast of a vehicle. Plenty of power, AWD, roomy compared to all others in its class.

It’s paid off and she loves it still so I’ll keep fixing it.
This has to be hyperbole - my 20 year old car has needed exactly one brake job. Are there really vehicles which require this much maintenance?

ETA NM, I see @the moops is on it. But that is completely ridiculous

No hyperbole. Twice a year.

I recently sold a 2017 Nissan frontier with its original brakes. It’s both her driving and the vehicle but mostly her.

I'll let him know, but he already traded it in for a different truck at a big loss. I just saw that a class action lawsuit was filed last week over the 6.2L.

I did not mean to offend in any way, she's a trooper for sure. Just saying it would get to me. You said an hour and 15 minutes, btw. That's 2 1/2 hours a day in a car. In traffic. With the latter part being the bigger issue, for me anyway. I cannot stand traffic. The constant start and stop drives me crazy and the older I get the less patience I have for it (thus the mention of demographics here).

That said, driving long distances doesn't bother me. In fact I actually enjoy the open road, especially when there are things to see. It feels like I'm getting somewhere and way more leisurely, no stress, without the constant reminder to hit the brakes along with everyone else around me.

Not offended at all. It’s awful but not that crazy for the DC area. Hell, people drive two hours from PA to work here and then drive back.

Agree on all counts. I’ll take a longer route if it means I’m not sitting still.

For 10+ years I was routinely (3-4 times a week) in 90min to 2 hour traffic each way. The other days were 60-90 min commutes. Sometimes it’s just what the job dictates.

If you guys can wait a year, this will be the best vehicle/value on the market.

Great performance and price. But for the love of god, am I the only person on the planet who doesn’t want an SUV/truck/crossover?
Ballpark 1/6 vehicles sold in the U.S. are cars. But it will likely go down as companies invest where the majority of customers are buying. Smaller vehicles could help both range and affordability, so there could be a chance for a comeback.

I want the R3
Better, but would it kill them to make a sedan?
The R3 is pretty hatchback/sedan'ish

Agree. Reminds me of the late, great VW Gulf. Is this moops back in the day?!

Sweet pic.

Ha! Never had that old version - did have a diesel Golf TDI in the early 2000's though

LOFL. You gotta be kidding me, you actually had one?! That's awesome.

Might I suggest you try on a new avatar? :excited:

For the '26 Outback, Subaru is bringing back physical climate control buttons

Makes me feel good about my choices. Lucid sedan, with physical buttons for temp and fan speed. The problem with no physical buttons is that it becomes very hard to use while driving.

Sorry, I can’t get over those ugly headlights.
Zero to 60 in 3.0 seconds. You sure won't be seeing them in your rear view mirror.

While it may not be on the R2, those headlamps on the R1 recognize oncoming traffic and dimmer only the portion directed to on coming traffic.

The headlights are wild. They don’t just remove “pixels” to avoid blinding oncoming drivers, they appear to be constantly adjusting to signage and even terrain. I’m not entirely sure what the algorithm involves (i.e. what triggers headlight adjustments other than oncoming traffic/vehicle speed/steering angle), but I can tell you: The lights do a lot of adjusting, pretty much constantly.

I question anyone that would decide on whether to buy a car because of the headlights
Rivian headlights are probably their #1 design cue. Many people make vehicle (or any) purchases based on style. Safety, utility, value, performance, style were the buying factors when I came up in the auto industry.

Hey, I love the looks of the new Toyota 4Runner, I mean I really really like it - but don’t like that I can’t at least get a v6 in it. Nothing out there right now (that’s new) checks all the boxes for me. Right now the closest thing is a last gen 4Runner with a v6, assuming I don't go EV. If I were to go EV, would likely be a used Y, it I’m not crazy about its looks either - plus they are everywhere.

Not sure what boxes you need but

V6.... Love ours

Looks nice and would be looked at. Right now I’m happy with what I’m driving - but also realistic in that it’s a 13 year old vehicle with over 200k miles. It is a Toyota, though, so it’s still had a lot of life left. I’m at the point, though, where I’m deciding what “maintenance” to do with it - still runs just fine but lots of the suspension components are showing their age - 2 weekends ago I spent an entire day in my garage swapping out the lower control arms, and the sway bar bushings and end links, only to still have the same squeaks that I had before (next up would be shocks/struts).

Loved my 2015 Outback, but the transmission on the verge of collapse at 126k was pretty disappoiting and was forced to get rid of it. Thought about another Outback (Wilderness), but ended up with a 2024 Tiguan SEL R series instead. I absolutely love it.

Check with a GM dealer. Just quoted one out this week for an insurance job and the Engine was $3400. Actually getting one can be an issue (Luckily we have 1 in stock that we try to replace every time we use it but sometimes it takes a while). It is nuts because a 5.3 goes for $5800. I am sure the 6.2 will go up eventually as soon as GM has to quit paying for them under warranty.

All I know is I was up late the night before your post looking at similar options for my next ride. The typical ones.

The next night I ended up taking a deep dive into the Rivian rabbit hole, thanks to you.

Sold. I love the thing. :hifive:

I've never been a car guy. My used RT1 has probably been the only vehicle purchase with no buyers remorse. The truck has gotten substantially better every month via software updates. Stuff that is a paid option on other vehicles gets download free. As in example, the ride has improved, the wipers have more options, pet mode is better, rear control screen has more control options, camera views on screen when signal on added, remote camera view option, more ride heights added, remote heat/air from phone just to name a few. Everyone I've interacted with has been more than pleasant. You can call customer service and they actually answer the phone. They replaced the 12v battery in every vehicle because some vehicles had a problem and did this from my work parking lot. Beyond that, I just like the entire culture of the company and it's something I support.

I will say they are expensive and I'm biased because as a business vehicle it only costs me 50-60 cents on the dollar.

I did the after party for rivian when they did the media launch/preview for the 2 new cars. Good peeps. They told me to put down a deposit, I may still do so on the r3. I need to go drive one.

AWD or just FWD. I just assumed I'd want AWD, but as I continue to internet warrior things I'm beginning to think it's not even a big deal. I live in Georgia. Do I need to take on the handful of cons, like slightly less mpg and harder on tires, for that maybe 2 weeks a year it would actually benefit me? Any thoughts on this?

I've gone both ways - FWD for better range/MPG/cost and AWD for getting stuck in snow/icy conditions. Currently have 1 of each. I'll likely go AWD going forward, especially as additional charging stations are coming online.

AWD means you need to have all the same tires - can’t ever be mixing and matching front/rear sets. Also means you have to monitor the usually small transfer case and it’s oil. (Gearbox so all four axel move together)

Better in the rain

If it’s a sports car, new or poor driver it’s a plus.

That’s all I got.

Having driven Subaru for 15 years now over 3 different models, AWD comes in real handy, especially trying to parallel park or tight parking spots, makes things easy
U-Turns, you rarely have to worry about not being able to make a complete turn

My other vehicle in this stretch was a Volvo S60, great sedan but it didn't have AWD on the model I had, I wished it would have

Great info on AWD and FWD. I can see both pros and cons. I was 100% on the team AWD until today now I'm just on the fence.

Test driving the 2025 Mazda CX50 Premium Plus today. Gonna also test drive just a FWD to see if I notice much difference.

Price hikes on the way

While the short-term effects of tariffs have driven up sales, U.S. automakers have privately warned lawmakers that they will be forced to drastically raise prices if the tariffs remain in place.

“In the absence of material changes to the tariff policy as articulated to date, we anticipate the need to make vehicle pricing adjustments in the future, which is expected to happen with May production,” Ford executive Andrew Frick said in the memo.

Ford will not increase the sticker price on any vehicle currently in inventory at Ford and Lincoln dealers, the memo said.

An analysis by the Center for Automotive Research published earlier this month revealed that Trump’s 25% tariffs on automotive imports, implemented on April 3, will escalate costs for U.S. automakers by about $108 billion in 2025.

Ford is among the best-placed automaker to weather tariffs, as it produces about 80% of its U.S.-sold vehicles domestically.

Earlier this week, Trump had floated the idea that he was considering a modification to the auto-related tariffs, suggesting he might grant exemptions on levies already in place.

Best guess is pricing will look similar to when we had the chip shortage in 2021. Lower dealer inventories, higher used car prices. I haven't seen any good models that include a recession on top of the tariff scenarios.
