Chad Johnson Superstar killing Chad Johnson (1 Viewer)

He had 2 drops, one may not have been catchable, but the other clearly was, on which both, he jumped and leaned back instead of going straight up. Watching it, both times, I got the impression he was trying to put on a show, and it cost him two catches.

Anyone else get this impression tonight?

no

How about the huge catch he had in the 1st half that he had no business catching?

That looked pretty good, but he was probably just trying to show off and it was a routine catch.

i think he felt the footsteps, but he has been dropping a lot of passes in the other games I've seen.

carson is trying to kill CJ out there...

his willingness to go for just about every ball carson puts up there is worrying me.

No.

I don't know but I loved the shot of CJ going to the sidelines chatting it up with Belicheck between plays.

Dude makes me laugh.

I like just about everything about Chad Johnson. But some things he still just doesnt get. And here's the small example. First half, he makes the catch down the left sideline, evades defenders and goes down at about the 2. Maybe the 1. Housh ultimately scored a 1yd TD a play or 2 later, but after Johnson made his catch and run to get the ball down the goalline, he sat in the endzone with his hands over his face mask, seemingly dissapointed for whatever reason that he didnt score. And obviously the reason was because he wanted to score, celebrate and put on some sort of MNF show. He lost focus. Like he does often because he's so caught up in being a performer. He's the team's best player and the team sucks for the past 15 games. So when the team loses, and the team's best player has a tendency to lose focus on the task at hand which should simply be winning instead of performing, someone should finally step in and say something. I love the guy, but to this point, he still doesnt quite get it. He's acrobatic. he's fun. He's great for the game. He's also the best player on a really bad team.

yeah, the bengals didn't look very happy playing together tonight... their team has looked quite shellshocked and i don't think they're going to be much this year

i have stock in none of their players, but would gladly talk trades with any owner of CJ...

he impresses me...

but i too was a bit diturbed that he was beating himself up for failing to get the TD on that play...

How is that obviously the reason? Is it possible he was upset because he just didn't score for the team? I know the guy loves his celebrations and that may be the reason he did what he did, but that's just a tremendous assumption that that was "obviously" the reason.

give me a break, already. we both know why he was pissed he didnt score at the ONE YARD LINE. Someone else on his team was about to score a TD instead of 85. its not really a big deal. But youre not thinking staight if you think its anything else.

so you're telling me that this 85's only reason to get in the endzone is to celebrate and not put points on the board? if that's the case how do you explain him congratulating TJ on his TD and not throwing another fit?

and that something else was???.....Johnson thinking his own team wasnt good enough to punch that ONE yard in with a fresh set of downs? Youre making excuses for a selfish act.

he obviously woke up and realized it wasnt all about himself.

You're putting on a clinic in here...how to 2nd a guess a player when you have no idea and don't even follow the team closely. Are you always this pleasant?

Do you always blame the team's best player when its defense is the actual problem? Does this work for baseball as well? Did you nail Ken Griffey Jr. to the wall in the mid-90s when the Mariners bullpen was blowing every other game? Did you kill Pujols this year because the Cards pitching sucked and injuries took their toll? Is it Peavy's fault that the Padres lost the play-in game tonight? He came up short in a big game. Maybe he was thinking about the big stage instead of the big win?

Chad Johnson does many things exceptionally well...exceptionally. And you choose to focus on one minuscule detail that didn't live up to your standards. Are you really that small of a person? Really? Chad Johnson = good and he cares about winning above all else. Bengals defense = embarrassingly awful and get off scott free. But that's too easy to figure out, and I'm sure it doesn't fit your pet theory from Psychology 101. But nobody on the defense makes a national commercial, so you have to nail the guy you constantly hear about in order to work your "theory" into a fantasy football thread.

Give the guy a freaking break! He missed one pass tonight. Sure he wants to put on a show. If that motivates him to excel at his profession then so be it.

I think the Bengals absolutely miss Henry. They are going to be in a lot of shootouts. I just hope the WRs stay healthy long enough to get Henry back.

Not every defense is the Patriots.

Oh, and going into a game with only 4 LBs active is inexcusable. There are players out there, go get them.

first of all, I said it wasnt that big of a deal. second, I said I liked just about everything about the guy. Third, youve got issues.

good players want the ball period. Yes I'm sure he was upset that he didn't score, I also saw him very happy when Housh DID score. If you watch the NFL for any length of time I'm sure you will see that getting the ball at the 2 does not ensure a touchdown.

The Bengals just aren't that good. They badly miss their SLOT WR?Come on. They have two of the best WRs in the league. You have CJ and Housh, and you MISS Henry? The play calling was awful. Palmer didn't look good. The line was spotty. The D is horrible. It's a bad team. End of story. They are hopelessly overrated. They never had a chance in this game. Not even close. If the Browns/Bengals played again next week, and I was forced to bet my house on the game, I'd take the Browns. And that's pretty much sums up your team.Palmer "seems" like an elite QB. But, he just doesn't impress me. Would Manning have gone down like that? Brady? Even Favre? With those weapons, that much talent on the o-line, you have to rally your team more then that. If he's a top 3 QB, which is one of the best of his generation, he needs to show up. He just never comes up big. Elway, Marino, Favre, they just don't constantly come up small like that.Go back to last year, Colts/Bengals MNF. Same deal. Palmer/CJ #### the bed. Either they're not ready for prime time, or they're overrated. Either way, 1-3 is about right.EDIT: And CJs act has gotten old. Good ole Marvin Harrison. Just go out there and put up. No one needs to hear about it. We can see it just fine thank you.

Two players you cannot criticize on this board without getting a ration of crap: Favre and Chad Johnson.

I'm just trying to see what the big deal is. Every receiver drops balls. Yes, eventually Moss will too. He's put together a ton of A+ efforts this year. So tonight, he turns in a B+, and the OP wants to dump it on him instead of the defense? As far as him holding his head at the 1 yard line, there was a backup RB in, the team is demoralized--and Chad had just one tackle to break to get in the endzone. Pretty sure he wanted the points right then. I'm all for criticism when it's due, but twitch is way out of bounds here.

 I thought he was out-of-bounds when he said "He's fun. He's great for the game. He's also the best player on a really bad team." If this was the only thread where someone criticized Johnson and the rest of the populous went nuts, I wouldn't have said what I said.

He had 2 drops, one may not have been catchable, but the other clearly was, on which both, he jumped and leaned back instead of going straight up. Watching it, both times, I got the impression he was trying to put on a show, and it cost him two catches.Anyone else get this impression tonight?
Hmmmm... the ball was consistently thrown behind him... if he jumped straight up he would have had no shot at it at all. I don't think he was "putting on a show"... I think he was trying to catch the ball.I own Palmer, and for each of his incredible throws last night, he also had some terrible throws high and behind the receiver. Honestly, it seemed like he just didn't know how fast CJ was, OR CJ wasn't running the route precisely. I'm leaning (no pun intended) toward the former.

I like just about everything about Chad Johnson. But some things he still just doesnt get. And here's the small example. First half, he makes the catch down the left sideline, evades defenders and goes down at about the 2. Maybe the 1.
Yeah, must be because he wanted to celebrate... I mean, forget about the fact that you need to score to win. Honestly, none of us know what's going on in a player's head (or coach's for that matter) unless they say something about it in the press. But don't you think Barry Sanders (famous for his non-celebratory flip the ball to the refs) would have been disappointed had he gone down at the 1 or 3 instead of scoring?

Wow, you don't remember Elway early in his career, and you've never seen Marino come up short, and Favre totally LOSE a game by himself? I've been critical of Palmer (in this very thread) but to say he's not top-3, or he should miss a great weapon like Chris Henry is a bit too much. There were some throws last night Palmer made that seriously, only Peyton Manning and Palmer could make. His physical ability is every bit top-1 or 2... Brady is a better decision maker and right now has far better intangibles which push him above Palmer in ranking NFL QBs... but Palmer is clearly the #3 QB in the NFL right now.BTW - "that much talent on the o-line" - did you watch the game? Palmer's pocket collapsed on EVERY play... the OL was terrible. I don't care how much "talent" they have - none of it showed last night. And part of that is AFAIK Levi missed the game (I think I heard the announcers mention that) and he's a huge component of the OL success.

If you havent had a chance to review that play a couple of times, you cant appreciate what Im getting at. Look, Im not ripping Chad Johnson for having a bad game. He made some catches that were off target he had no business making. Because he's just that good. But if the best player on a team is DEMORALIZED with 12 minutes left to play in the 2nd quarter while at home, only down by 10, but with the ball on the 1-yard line and likely about to score, Id have to ask WHY? Why is he demoralized? Its early in the game. He's a leader and the team's best player. Demoralized that he didnt score but left his team in great position at the 1-yard on four fresh downs to be down by only 3? Im sorry, but Im not buying that particular defense. Demoralized? Only because he couldnt celebrate on Monday night.

You're really off base here twitch. I would be disappointed in any player if they weren't disappointed that they failed to score in that situation. You seem like you are looking for a reason to rip into CJ. CJ isn't the problem with the Bengals, and his dramatic "I can't believe I didn't hit paydirt" act wasn't a bad thing for the team.

I like Chad Johnson and I have him on one of my teams, but what I think is that a lot of folks are more old school than they care to admit. Choreographed celebrations have passed the point of being cool. Maybe handing the ball to the ref (see Marvin Harrison and LT2) as if you've been in the end zone before might pass celebrations as being cool.

Youve got to stop with the 'off base' stuff because I couldnt possibly be more ON base. This is an undisciplined team that's lost 11 of their past 17 and their best player is POUTING on the 1yd line. Again, hit rewind on your Tivo and watch the play.I only would have been dissapointed in that great Sammy Morris run down to the 2 last night if he had sat by himself in the endzone with his head in his hands and acted like it was the end of the world, instead of picking himself up, accepting the just due congrats by his teammates, and contributed to his team scoring on one of the next 4 plays. That's what a good team player does. Now, if he had pouted in self-disappointment because he wasnt gonna make a highlight reel, I would have probably called for his head. it would have been a poor reflection of what the Pats are all about. Chad Johnson's act is an accurate reflection of what his team is currently all about. Until he 'gets it', Im not sure that team will. And if you dont get it, then so be it.

One thing I've noticed about this game is that there seems to be a correlation between scoring TDs and winning games. Call me crazy, but if you do some research and statistical analysis, you will find this to be so.Keeping that in mind, perhaps the reason Chad wanted to score a TD was really an indication of a subconscious desire for his team to win the game.

It's an interesting theory. I'd love to hear your thoughts...

your take is far too brilliant and deep for me to dare touch. Ill stay over here in the shallow end. That, or you could go back and read a couple of posts and get caught up before breaking into the wise guy schtick.

I don't think it was a good play by CJ to go over and talk with BB after his great catch...... You just don't do that during a game, if you are a winning, team oriented player....

Focus on your team and winning, and what you need to do next, not chatting it up with the oppossing coach....

When I saw that, I immediately felt something bad was going to happen related to CJ losing focus, and I also know BB probably videotaped it, or dropped a few Jedi Mind Tricks in his head.

Then, just two plays later, Chad Zigs when Palmer thought he would ZAG, and NE makes an easy pick at a VERY crucial time in the game.

Give the guy a freaking break! He missed one pass tonight. Sure he wants to put on a show. If that motivates him to excel at his profession then so be it.I think the Bengals absolutely miss Henry. They are going to be in a lot of shootouts. I just hope the WRs stay healthy long enough to get Henry back. Not every defense is the Patriots. Oh, and going into a game with only 4 LBs active is inexcusable. There are players out there, go get them.
For the record, my team is the Colts! Yes, the Bengals miss Henry in the slot. Henry had 9 TDs last season. Ask Peyton Manning if the Colts missed having Stokley last year. The Colts offense suffered because of the absence. The Bengals have a bad defense that also happens to be injury-riddled. It is a little too early to start the Palmer chokes rant, eh?

:excited:
I don't believe this. I think Chad wanted to get in for Chad. First and goal from the 2 is pretty good odds on getting in either way. Just not for a wideout like Chad.

This could be one of the most ######ed things I've ever read.

I gotta agree with twitch. CJ's reaction to not getting into the endzone was very over the top. If I just turned the game on and saw that I would have thought that him not scoring meant they lost the game. Then again, I may be just to old school, as I turn the channel after he scores so I don't have to see his lame celebrations.

This twitch guy is dumb. Johnson was playing it up for the crowd that he didn't score on that play. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course he wanted to score and of course he made one hell of an effort to get as close as he did but to think he was demoralized for not scoring is absurd.

It was. However, it was no more over the top than any defensive player that I have seen make a great defensive play on a ball, only to drop a sure INT. Still a great defensive play, but the defender smelled a TD. I never realized they were 'demoralized' before. Thought they were just disappointed they didn't score. This could be the stupidest argument in the Shark Pool right now.
