**** Chargers Interminable Thread - Because No One Demanded It **** (2 Viewers)

Looking like Palmer will be out Saturday. Other than that several key players questionable, but I figure they'll play. Seems like they wouldn't have waived McFadden if they were really worried about Slater or Pipkins, but :shrug: .

At this stage of the season it's a good injury report heading into the game.

James named AFC defensive player of the month. What a turnaround from his time under Staley.

GREAT article in The Athletic today about the culture of the Chargers. Harbaugh is a nutball but he's been really positive for you guys. I think you guys take care of Houston rather easily.

Not saying Harbaugh isn't good for SAN...uh ..la, Just think the train tracks end here. Next year will bring true answers to a lot of question marks. Like who's going to lead that backfield? Who's going to be a true wr #1? Where is our defense going Via draft? They need a lot of pieces to fill in before a playoff puzzle can be solved. I'm optimistic next year that step will be taken. This year not so much.

They really **** the bed though. It's been a good season, but the performance today tarnishes it a bit. Their weaknesses all showed up big time. And Herbert was pretty awful too. That's the more concerning thing to me. He hasn't really established himself as a prime time QB when it counts.

Doesn't fell great to be this right but I think we all knew this is how it would end. Bring on the draft and free agency.

Herbert is mostly to blame for this one. And the coaches. Barf. When they kicked the first FG I said out loud “if we are kicking FGs, we lose.” So many good things on D and pedestrian offense. Stupid. Please fire Roman.

Some of it's on Roman, but Herbert stunk, and the lack of playmakers beyond McConkey, and the crummy offensive line play were pretty prominent too. There's still a lot of repairs that need to be done on that offense.

I think the only team above .500 they beat all year was the Broncos. That gives a pretty good indication of where the team finishes this season.

I say fire Roman because you can’t fire Herbert. it should have been 14-0 5 minutes in.

I'm disappointed in the outcome but also disappointed in the reaction from Chargers fans about it. The Chargers won 5 games last season. They were playing with house money today.

It wasn't Roman's fault Herbert threw 4 interceptions, including a pick 6. It wasn't Herbert's or Roman's fault one of them should have been caught by Dissly or that the Chargers collectively had a few other drops. It wasn't Herbert's fault that he was under a lot of pressure and had mutliple passes tipped. It wasn't Herbert's fault that the running game was ineffective.

I'm looking forward to more positive progress this offseason from Hortiz and Harbaugh. The future for the Chargers is bright and that should be the focus now.

Like most things in life, it is about managing expectations. They took a jump this year and I expect that to continue. It was tough watching Herbert struggle, but ultimately this team overachieved this year based on their talent level. He had a bad game and will be pinned on him, doesn’t mean the sky is falling. They get touchdowns in the first two-three drives and this was probably a different game, things happen and it did not go their way. Herbert needs more weapons and the team in general has a few holes. Mack is a UFA as well which they will need to overcome. Future is bright, but they need another strong off-season to continue positive trajectory.
 
Important for the FO (and fans) to take a step back and not overreact to Saturday’s debacle. Disappointing for sure, but 2024 overall was a big success.

That said, we can’t show up to a playoff game in the future with those same receiving and rushing weapons. And to reiterate an idea from a few pages back - where were the designed runs for Herbert?!?? :mad:

Designed runs? Herbert only had 14 designed runs this season, and 11 were QB sneaks. Designed runs for Herbert were not really a thing.

If you meant scrambles, I have not rewatched the game but heard on a podcast that Houston did a good job with their IDL discipline, avoiding giving Herbert holes for scrambles between the tackles, which is where most of his scrambles have occurred this season. He isn't really one to take scrambles to the outside, and that is where the pressure was mostly coming from, so not sure how feasible that would have been.

To me, the biggest problem is still the interior offensive line. They need to make addressing that first priority. I don't know how that translates into draft strategy and free agent signings, but it's just not fit for purpose right now, particularly if they really want a solid run game. They just flat out can't open holes. Then of course there are all the pressures and sacks they give up to above average and better pass rushes. Yesterday it looked like Herbert was really mentally distracted by that and it affected his play.

I get being cautious with Herbert during the regular season, especially early. But the risk calculus has to change later in the season, and definitely in the playoffs. His legs are a weapon, and it’s disappointing that it was ignored on a day in which weapons were no where to be found.

I don’t follow. Designed runs other than sneaks were non-existent all season. Scrambles are up to Herbert.

Are you complaining about Herbert or Roman here?
 
Mack says he's going to play next season, and wants to play for the Chargers. I hope they make it happen and send Bosa on his way.

I didn't see the part about him saying he wants to play for the Chargers. Got a link? I'm hoping they can work a solid deal out to keep him. If he goes I don't like the potential domino effect of them feeling like they have to keep Bosa just to have some kind of edge personnel.

I think edge needs to be a pretty high priority in this draft. Still so many holes to fill.

Upon rereading, his quote was from January 12th. Chargers will have to be savvy in how they negotiate this one.
 
Posted this in the dynasty value thread but thought I’d post it here for Homer thoughts…

Chargers RB situation next year: Dobbins was on a 1 year deal, right? Wondering if Vidal (who I hold in a couple of leagues) will have any keeper value heading into next year. (I have him in 1FFPC dynasty league which is only Keep 14 skill players, and cut down is end of March, so thinking if he’s worth trying to fit into my keepers or if he’s simply droppable at this point, or if I try to trade him to the Dobbins owner if he’d even care).
 
Should someone set up a new 2025 thread?

I don't know that the Chargers can afford to give up the draft capital it will take to get Garrett. Would you give up like two 1sts, plus some long term salary commitment? It'd be fun to see him and Mack on the same squad though. Or would he be the Mack replacement?

I would keep this one going since it is basically a start point for Jim Harbaugh
Change it to 2025 or make a title that lets folks know it is ongoing

My opinion for the Harbaugh Era is keep it all under one thread

I do something similar inside the Dolphins thread. I like to show what the biggest caps are and I typically like to add if there is guaranteed money or not
When a player has a big cap hit but no guaranteed money left, prime targets for restructure/extension, however you want to look at it.
I agree with you on Bosa, seems like he's been not as impactful of late

Miami has something like $110M+ in cap hits tied up in 4 players including Tua Tags-Tyreek Hill-Armstead at LT and Chubb at Edge, none of them on the field much when the Phins needed them most at the end of the season as they sank to 8-9. Tua and Tyreek have too much money coming to them to do much, Armstead and Chubb however have ZERO guaranteed dollars left so Miami can get a lot of cap relief with post June 1st cuts or they can restructure and likely get these 2 players to play ball with them vs fear of being cut/released

-Armstead still plays at a pretty high level, played quite a lot last season but tends to miss chunks of time and it hurts when he's not in there. Miami needs to draft a replacement

I don't disagree. When I was writing the post, I didn't realize I was going to end up with so much cap space left over. They could easily sign a higher quality free agent CB and spend a bit more to do so.
 
What do we feel like it would be worth to get the best (or one of the best) defensive players in the league for a couple of years? They need to address edge here somehow. Gamble on a draft pick contributing, or pay through the nose for a sure thing?

I didn’t address it in my posts, but they could do both. They could sign veteran free agent Josh Sweat and also draft an Edge. If they did that, they could cut Dupree.
 
So now that we are into the offseason with some info, what are we thinking on additions? Looks like Higgins is going to stay in Cincinnati. Do we want Adams or Metcalf? Also seeing mocks placing Jeanty with the Chargers. I can’t see this staff making that selection.

I prefer Adams to Metcalf because it will take non-trivial draft capital to trade for Metcalf.

This staff could definitely draft Jeanty but I wouldn’t want that. Fortunately he probably won’t be there at pick 22.

IMO they should:
  • Cut/trade Pipkins and Edwards
  • Re-sign 10+ internal free agents (identified in the posts I linked earlier)
  • Sign Adams
  • Sign Mark Andrews if he is released; if not, sign Juwan Johnson
  • Sign at least 1 external free agent to start at IOL
  • Sign 1 external free agent to start at outside corner
  • Draft 1 Edge, 1 IDL, and 1 RB within first 4 rounds

I agree, I do not think DK is even a consideration for the Chargers. I doubt they would look at Jeanty in the first either with the depth at the position. They will need to get Herbert some toys, it will be interesting how they choose to continue to build around him. The interior oline will definitely be a priority to address in draft/FA.

  4. Dobbins - RB 1/2 to pair with rookie
  5. Bozeman - not many alternatives who are great scheme fits; would still considering signing another free agent and/or drafting a center
  6. Heinicke - QB2
  7. Scott - need a punter
  8. Dye - LB3 and special teams
  9. Niemann - to battle for LB4/5 roster spot; if not, practice squad
  10. Jefferson - 4th safety, but won't make final 53 man roster to avoid guaranteeing his salary; should be re-signed to the final roster when they get past that

Mack, Ford, and Tart seem like no-brainers assuming they're not asking for astronomically out of line salaries. Without those three, you're doing a complete rebuild of the defensive line, and thus probably yet another year away from true contention.
 
Also saw a report that punter Scott re-signed for 2 years, $6M. 👍

Everything they have done that I am aware of so far was on my list:
  • Cut Bosa
  • Cut Edwards
  • Re-sign Mack
  • Re-sign Molden
  • Re-sign Scott
  • Re-sign Fisk
Still a lot to do. Unfortunately many of the big ticket free agent signings on my list aren't going to happen (WR Higgins, WR Adams, G Smith).
