***Chicago Cubs Thread*** (3 Viewers)

It's sad that Banks lived through 83 World Series and the Cubs didn't win any of them
He played through some of the worst decisions any franchise has ever made in any sport. Phil Wrigley putting his son-in-law in charge. Brock for Broglio. The College of Coaches, and on and on and on.

Met him at the Cubs convention when I was 12 or 13. Huge line behind me waiting to get autographs. He signed my ball and spent 10 minutes asking how my Pony league team was doing and which position I played etc.

RIP Ernie

This part from Kurkjian's article reminds me of a story

If you were on the team and you weren't married, he was always trying to get you married. He'd ask, 'Why aren't you married?' -Billy Williams
About 5-6 years ago my buddy was tending the bar at Chilis in Naperville (maybe it was North Plainfield). About every other week Ernie would come in for lunch and sit at the bar by himself and talk baseball with my friend (a White Sox fan). He was still pretty sharp and knew the league in and out. He really loved baseball. He always wanted to watch the Cubs, but would gladly watch ANY baseball.

Well anyways, my friend was single so anytime a cute waitress or customer would come to the bar, he would talk up my buddy and try to hook him up with all the ladies, saying they should go out with him, hes a nice guy, etc. Was genuinely a nice and positive person and just enjoyed talking to people.

I am a lot more upset about this than I thought I would be. A truly great ambassador for the Cubs and MLB.

Reading these stories really makes the Cubs-Banks connection seem eerily similar to the Cards-Musial connection. Two treasures that will never be forgotten. Sorry about your loss, Cubbies. :sadbanana:

Vaguely remember the tail end of his career. Probably the first player I can recall retiring. Was an incredible individual as well as one of the all time greats. Will be missed by baseball. RIP, Mr. Cub....

Well, how were they doing and what position did you play?

My Mom grew up in southern Illinois in a house of Cardinals fans. When she was a little girl she claims she had an autographed ball from Stan. I really wish she still had it.

I actually think that was the year we won a bunch of tournaments. We were actually pretty good. I played 2nd and 3rd and hit second. High OBP guy with doubles power that could run.

I have to admit that I haven't tired of the Ernie Banks talk. It's been a non stop parade of praises for what seems to have been an exemplary gentleman.

While I was driving into the city tonight i listened to a replay of a Cubs Confidential Banks was interviewed for, on WGN l, back in 2012.

He recalled a story about a conversation he had with Bill Madlock about being, and staying, with the Cubs. To put it kindly, things didn't go as expected and Banks and Madlock walked away not seeing eye to eye.

Madlock was later quoted as calling Ernie Banks an 'Uncle Tom'

Bill Madlock is a ####.

Banks was born in 1931

Madlock was born in 1951

There are huge differences between a black man coming of age in the 40s vs. one in the 60s. Madlock played the game with a rage that was also far removed from Banks' eternally sunny disposition.

Madlock is 64 now and hopefully has greater perspective than when he was a player with the Cubs. I'm inclined to give him a pass and I'm pretty sure Banks would too.

Holy ####, I'm getting old. Use to like watching him play.

The Offseason: Hope in Chicago and Miami

Tonight at 9 on MLB Network. Inside look at Joe Maddon, Anthony Rizzo, and Giancarlo Stanton.

RIP Mr Cub - Had a chance to meet Ronnie and Ryno and always wanted to meet Ernie. A great ambassador for MLB and professional sports. Magnificent player and a better human being. A role model for the ages with class to the millionith degree. A sad day but the memories will always be special to Cub fans

If that doesn't get you fired up for a 108th season of futility,

nothing will.
I'm gonna drive around Romeoville all weekend until I see someone with a mustache and punch him in the face.
Im assuming it's a Hitler
I'm assuming it's one of those stereotypical bushy south side 'staches and he's wearing jean shorts with crocs and socks.
It's never to cold to wear a wife beater

I love guessing this lineup. I'll start from a couple weeks into the season when Bryant is up

1. Fowler CF

2. Castro SS

3. Rizzo 1B

4. Soler RF

5. Bryant 3B

6. Baez 2B

7. Montero C

8. Alcantara

9. Rex Grossman

The fun thing about Maddon is this will change on a daily basis.

Doesn't seem platoon-y enough.
