Classic Album Discussion Thread: The Kinks-Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt. 1 (2 Viewers)

One of my favorite artists, and albums. For a solo performer, there's no one else I'd rather see live who's still among us. Check out Le Noise that he put out in 2010, if you haven't already. It's the best thing he's put out in the last 20 years.

It's high for me too.

I only got to see Young live once...at Farm Aid - 90s.

Awesome performance! 👍
I saw him at Farm Aid in 2013 (solo/acoustic set), and in 2015 with Promise of the Real. In that PoTR show, they played for nearly three hours, and it was a guitar jamming grungefest by the end, with a 15-minute Cowgirl in the Sand. "Mail it in" is not in his vocabulary, that's for sure.

Jeeze Pete.

He was still doin Farm Aid in '13? That's kick ###!

That 15 show sounds nice as well.

When I saw him in 90's, he was with Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews and Hootie & Blowfish, I think.

Good Times. 👍

As a huge NY fan I haven’t kept up with his output the last 20 years or so. I will definitely check that out. Is it all instrumental?

It's just him, with minimalist production. His vocals especially shine on this album, and aren't muddied as sometimes happens with his more 'twangy' albums.

Thanks! I’ll check it out.

On a side note, I recently re-familiarized myself with Here We Are In The Years on guitar. That song is so underrated and has some really unexpected chord changes. For any guitarists that love NY, you should learn that one. So fun to play and sing.

Counting Crows- August and Everything After (1993)

Round Here

Omaha

Mr. Jones

Perfect Blue Buildings

Anna Begins

Time and Time Again

Rain King

Sullivan Street

Ghost Train

Raining In Baltimore

A Murder of One

For the longest time I was resentful of this album and refused to listen to it. That’s because about a year after it was released, the local radio station I listened to polled listeners for the greatest rock albums of all time and then did a top 50 countdown. The top 10 as I recall had all the usuals you would expect: Beatles, Pink Floyd, LZ, etc, except that August and Everything After was voted #2 all time!! So that pissed me off at the time- what can I say? I’m pretty dumb.

Anyhow I’m over it now. It’s a pretty solid effort with a lot of excellent songs- my favorite is probably “Round Here”. Another one of those 90s bands that never quite seemed to live up to their first album- seems to have been a lot of those.

It's definitely their most popular album, but their 3 best songs aren't on it - Potter's, Colorblind, and A Long December.

  A Long December.  On this album, I’m a huge fan of Anna Begins.

I’m sure it’s not cool to like this band, but looking over these song names I realized how many of their songs I really do think are great.

Anna Begins >>>> Colorblind and A Long December

Mrs. Potter is the best song they've done that I've heard.

It's odd to me how often I hear their cover of Return of the Grievous Angel on the radio. Like more than their own songs. I love Gram and that is the only thing related to him that I ever hear on the radio, but I don't care for that cover at all.

I’ve never heard this cover.  It’s one of my favorite songs, but based on your post, I won’t seek out the cover.

I'm odd about stuff like that. I'm sure others love it, so I would check it out if you like the song. It seems ubiquitous to me on satellite radio over the last few years. I heard it in a Marriott lobby last week.

On satellite radio, I rarely listen to anything but the Beatles channel.   :bag:

I think August and Everything After is a great album.  "Perfect Blue Buildings" is my favorite track on it.

Awesome album.

For those who don’t know, one of their recent albums - Somewhere Under Wonderland - is a great one. Probably my second favorite top to bottom Counting Crows albums.

August and Everything After is quite possibly the closest thing to a perfect album put out after 1990.  There are better albums overall, and Counting Crows has some better songs than some on this album (Holiday In Spain, for one), but August and Everything After is beautiful.  If I'm in the mood for one of those songs, I want to hear the entire album.

Also, love all of 'em but Raining in Baltimore is a gut-wrenching, soul crushing triumph of a song.

You and I hate each other. This is the worst album I can think of. There's nothing good about this album. It sucks.

I don't hate you.  I can't muster up that kind of anger for someone with such clear emotional and intellectual disabilities as would be necessary to hate August and Everything After.

Anna Begins is great, Long December is lovely, but Raining in Baltimore tears me open every time I hear it.

I haven't listened to this album much in the last 20 years but I enjoyed it at the time.  Murder of One was my favorite but I really don't get into the slower, deeper songs others have mentioned.

for those that don't know, CC put out an entire album of covers and its pretty good by my layman ears.  Meet On The Ledge, You Ain't Going Nowhere, Ooh La La, and a number of other quality remakes.

i saw him in 92-94  not sure exact date but toured with Pearl Jam.  He headlined, PJ was the warm up act, and they were already stars themselves.    It was outdoors probably 20-30,000 people in Portland.   He played his older heavier stuff with his Crazy Horse band.   It was interesting for sure, he was a dang madman on his guitar and they thumped.   I enjoyed it but honestly i think i'd like to also have seen him play an accoustic show in a smaller venue just to appreciate how truly musically gifted he is.

I feel like maybe I'm not understanding what you're trying to say.
Yeah, that's my fault. I was thinking of the Kylie Jenner thread and thinking of Christianity and stoning and our views on women and whether male violence equalled female sexuality and thought of Dylan who wouldn't even pick up his Nobel -- he told them to #### off. Truth is truth, and doesn't compromise.

you are wrong.  This is a phenomenal album that has held up over time.

I don't think this clarified very much for me, but I appreciate the effort.

Female sexuality = Male violence.

Dylan told the earthly and consensus gift that his gift was not of this earth nor consensus. I love you, Bob.
Yeah, I'm pretty clear on all of that, I'm just trying to connect that to the rest of the discussion, including the second half of CBGB's name.

August and Everything After is perfection from the opening of Round Here through Sullivan Street. The last few tracks don't hit the same heights in my mind but the overall album is one of my favorites of all time.

I also "discovered" it in the early 00s so it clearly aged well.
