@MaryKayCabotReport: Cleveland Browns re-sign CB Dimitri Patterson to 3 year deal, $16 million, $6 million guaranteed
Anybody else think that seems like a lot of money?
It appears that they're going to move him to safety, so it doesn't seem out of line for a starting safety.
Where did you see that? He's undersized for safety and he didn't play a single snap at safety last year. He's a fine CB3. I doubt they would move him to safety.

Sorry, I've been reading too much and got mixed up. It appears the Browns will move Sheldon Brown to safety or nickel, and put Patterson opposite Haden this year at CB.

Does this mean that Claiborne is out at 4?

We'll just carry the cap over to next year. We're not winning this year, anyway.
This is another reason why I hope we don't look at QB until day 3. I think we're going to be terrible this year. So why waste a pick on an avg QB when we have a shot at Barkley next year? I prefer RG3 to Barkley, but I MUCH prefer Barkley to Tannehill or Weeden. Going Tannehill or Weeden puts us in Minnesota's position this year.Put Colt in the best position to succeed, if he fails then go get Barkley. If he continues to develop then we're not picking in a spot in which Barkley is an option anyway. Then keep building.
I agree with this, but it would be a colossal failure that 4 years into QB God Mike Holmgren's tenure we finally get a QB.

@MaryKayCabot within the last 20 minutes...

#Browns Holmgren on RG3 offer to Rams: "what we offered was every bit the offer that was chosen.''#Browns Holmgren on RG3 offer to Rams: "There were reasons it didn't happen. There's a close relationship betw parties that got it done."#Browns Holmgren on RG3 offer: "not sure any offer we made was going to be quite good enough.'' (cuz relationship rams/redskins)#Browns Holmgren on RG3 offer: "rest assured we were aggressively involved in that.''#Browns Holmgren said "I'll discourage'' Tom Heckert from trading down from No. 4 pick.#Browns GM Tom Heckert on Colt McCoy: "I think he has a very big ceiling high ceiling. My job to get better players.''#Browns GM Heckert on trying to get a FA receiver: "it's easier said than done. FA not over yet.''#Browns GM Heckert confirmed the re-signing of CB Patterson, said will probably add another player in FA.#Browns Holmgren on Hillis: "I love Peyton Hillis...comes a time when fresh start is best for both sides.''I get the feeling the #Browns are prepared to go with Colt McCoy as their starter next year.

Very interesting that Holmgren said that their offer for RG3 was equal to the Skins. So the Rams took the Skins offer because Fisher and Shanahan are BFFs? Something isn't adding up here...

I'm wondering the same thing. As hard as they try not to tip their hand, this move screams, "We are NOT drafting Claiborne at pick 4!!!!"

^^^Good stuff. It's much more comforting knowing we made a strong play for RG3, even if we got hosed. I just hope we stick with Colt for at least this year.

Like seeing that we're probably not going DE early in the draft. Those kids need guys to rotate in, but I prefer vets in those roles...especially given the lack of talent in the draft. Need another DT though, just backup quality though.

I like the Patterson re-signing, Sheldon needs to be moved off the corner now. Hopefully to the bench soon, but that depends on the next couple months and if Skrine develops into nickel corner. I don't think it rules out CB early in the draft though. They can't be satisfied with Haden-Patterson-Skrine-Sheldon. I think they'd prefer all of those guys sans Haden be bumped down a spot and Sheldon moved to S...preferably backup.

Just hoping wave #2 is active, lots and lots and lots of holes to fill.

I see what you're saying, but do you give a nickel corner a 3 year $16 million contract? I would think that's what you'd pay a solid #2 guy.

Pre rookie slotting? Yes. Now? I don't think so. Vets are going to make more now than they did 3 years ago.

Could it be possible that we're actually building the team smartly?

I'm heating up to the idea of Richardson at 4. Floyd (or RT at 22), and RT at 37 (or Alshon Jeffrey if we take the RT at 22).

Sure does seem to point to Richardson at #4 with the moves the last two days. You certainly can't go into the season with Hardesty as your #1 option. Blackmon maybe but I don't see how you pass on Richardson at 4 given you just lost the best option you had at that position and this kid is as close to a lock at the position as you're going to get in this draft.

I am also not a fan of trading out of the pick, we've done that enough. Use the pick to grab some top notch talent. Move the 22 pick if you are hell bent on trading down.

#Browns Holmgren said "I'll discourage'' Tom Heckert from trading down from No. 4 pick.
I hope he was joking. I'm on board with taking Richardson with the 4th pick. In today's NFL, it's generally not a good idea to spend that high of a pick on a RB, but I think Richardson's talent warrants doing so. Talent aside, his build and 3 down ability would be a perfect fit in the west coast offense. And, I'd like to have a bruiser for the late fall/winter weather up on the lake. If Heckert is looking for a playmaker on offense, then I don't see a better one out there.

This looks smart. If our first three picks are a combo of RB, WR, and RT we will have an instant upgrade on offense. If we can somehow squeeze one more solid lineman out of this draft (OG) then we might have a watchable offense next year.I'd still like to add one more WR, as Little + a rookie would be very young. We need a veteran.

Not exactly sure what to say about this.

Holmgren gripes about Griffin trade

Last week at this time, the Rams were working out a deal to send the second overall pick in the 2012 draft to the Redskins for the sixth overall selection plus two other first-round picks and a second-round pick. The Browns were in the running for the pick that most likely will become the rights to Robert Griffin III, but in the end the Rams decided not to do business with the Browns.

Browns president Mike Holmgren isn’t happy that a franchise that was once headquartered in Cleveland dissed the team that currently plays there. He seems to think it was an inside job by the Rams to steer the pick to the Redskins.

“Honestly, when it didn’t happen I think there are reasons that I can’t go into right now, but there is a very close relationship between the people getting the deal done and the people who offered. And I’m not sure anything we offered would have been good enough. We were very, very aggressive and it didn’t work,” Holmgren said during a Thursday conference call for season-ticket holders, via Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland. (With all the football players getting new jobs lately, I forgot to point out that Grossi has a new job, too — he’s back on the Browns beat with ESPN Cleveland, which to its tremendous credit wasn’t troubled by Grossi’s Twitter malfunction from late January.)

As Grossi explains it, Rams coach Jeff Fisher and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan have a friendship. That friendship, in Holmgren’s view, ensured that the Redskins would get the pick.

But while Holmgren claimed that the Browns made “every bit the offer” that the Rams accepted from the Redskins, Holmgren didn’t disclose the terms. Was it three first-round picks and a second-round pick? Or was it some other package that Holmgren believes the Rams should have regarded as equivalent?

Peter King of SI.com reports via Twitter that Rams G.M. Les Snead instructed teams to make their best offer. The Redskins did and the Browns did. Then, the Browns wanted to make another offer, but the Rams had already decided to accept what the Redskins had offered.

Holmgren’s comments seem misguided, for several reasons.

First, the Rams had the right to trade the pick to anyone to whom they wanted to trade the pick. There are no rules in this regard apart from the two interested teams coming to a mutual agreement and the league providing its approval.

Second, absent specific disclosure by Holmgren of the offer that was made in response to the Rams’ request for the “best offer,” there’s simply no way to assess the validity of Holmgren’s complaint.

Third, if Holmgren knew the Redskins were at the table and knew that the relationships involved pointed to St. Louis doing the deal with D.C., why bother to even try? Or, even better, why not offer more than what the Redskins were expected to put on the table?

Fourth, it wasn’t in the Rams’ interests to keep Griffin in the conference. All things being equal, it made more sense to ship the pick to the AFC, since the Rams will now face Griffin at least once every three years, and possibly any year in the six-team NFC playoff field. Thus, if it truly was a tie (and since Holmgren didn’t disclose the offer we don’t know that), the Rams would have been more inclined to trade Griffin to the Browns.

Fifth, the comments will do little to shore up the confidence of Colt McCoy, or to allow the team to sell whoever the starter may be in 2012 as the first choice. The first choice was Griffin, and now everyone knows it.

Sixth, whining about the situation serves no purpose. Browns fans won’t get mad at the Rams or the Redskins; they’ll assume that the failure to land Griffin is the latest new product rolling off the assembly line at the “factory of sadness.”

Seventh, Holmgren has surely benefited from his own friendships and relationships many more times than he has been burned by those maintained by others. The Godfather of what once was known loosely as the Green Bay Mafia (Jon Gruden perhaps was Luca Brasi), Holmgren knows how to call in favors and/or throw his weight around when he needs to.

He’s frustrated primarily because he wasn’t able to do it this time. He would have wise, in our view, to keep those frustrations to himself.

And with that I’ll officially withdraw my application for employment with the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

So he's pissed about this 'inside job'? I wonder how he feels that you can only get a good position with the team if you have LaMonte as an agent?

There really isn't much RT talent after the top 3. We'd be better off targeting a guy like Zeitler and hope Pinkston can transition to RT if we're going that route.

At this point I think the #4 is either Claiborne or Richardson. While I'd be happy with either, I've been leaning toward the latter lately.

after missing out on RG3, I guess Id have to say the same about Richardson. I was never leaning in that direction, but this offense is near pathetic.I still expect the pick to be Claiborne, though

Funny I've been saying Claiborne but I'm starting to think it might be Blackmon.

think they could get someone closer to Blackmon's talent at #22 than they could Claiborne or Richardson...drop off at the CB and RB positions is much steeper, no?

@AdamSchefter: RT @DrewUrsic: Are the Browns looking at any WR's? ... The question that has become almost an annual rite of spring.
It could be worse. We could be starting the season with Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders as starters.
 I'd gladly swap.
I know. I was hurt by what Frenchy Fuqua said and acted out. lolIn all seriousness, seems like the Baylor receiver has fizzled. Any chance he falls to 37?
