McQuistan, who started 40 games for Seattle after signing as a free agent prior to the 2011 season (he spent a few weeks with Cleveland in 2010, his last time before coming to Seattle) becomes the seventh Seahawk free agent to sign with another team.

Now, Tate has his own starting job. For the 25-year-old Tate, it’s an opportunity to show what he can do with more reps. It is also his chance to prove he can deal with rigors of being a full-time starter after dealing with some injuries in his first four NFL seasons.

Speaking at the NFL meetings in Orlando on Tuesday, Browns coach Mike Pettine indicated Tate’s injury history — which includes broken ribs suffered last season and a broken ankle that kept him out for all of 2010 — was not a worry.

“I don’t have any issues with his durability,” Pettine said, according to an interview transcript from the Pro Football Writers of America. “He had a couple of things. Here’s a guy that had four broken ribs and played through it. It wasn’t until he had the fifth one broken that he couldn’t go anymore. He broke an ankle.

“To me, that more of a freak thing than anything else, but it’s not like there are just chronic injuries there and anytime you bring in a guy that’s got a chip on his shoulder, that’s going to be in your favor. When there’s a little bit of extra motivation to play and I think we’ve done that with a lot of the guys that we’ve added.”

A little injury luck for Tate could go a long way. He’s playing on just a two-year deal, giving him a chance to again test free agency early in 2016, when he will still be a couple years shy of 30.

I like the idea of waiting until the 2nd before taking a QB if one or two of the top 3 QBs falls to #26. I think if it's Manziel and you want him, you have to take him at #26. I think if it's Teddy and you want him, you can chance waiting. As for Bortles, I think he's a virtual lock top 10 pick, so I'm not even considering this. Since we can't predict teams trading out between #27 - #34, we can note a few things IMO:

- NE at #29 is always a threat to shop around when in this area.

- DEN at #31 is the sleeper QB team in this bunch.

- HOU at #33 is virtually a lock for QB if they don't take one at #1.

Other than that, everyone else seems very unlikely to take a QB - NO, CAR, SF, SEA, WAS

Ok, maybe. But don't we have like 7 or 8 picks already? I'm not of the opinion that we should trade picks this year for next year's draft (again unless it's crazy value). Stockpiling more picks in this draft just doesn't make sense. We should be thrilled if 5 or even 6 players from this draft make the active roster (not the practice squad).

Farmer will be the X factor here as it's his first draft as GM.

I was thinking WR or CB (across from Haden), there should be some good ones. Assuming you mean ILB, Mosley is off the board (if he checks out medically) and Shazier's best fit is 4-3 WLB, probably won't be good value there. XSF would be a great fit at guard, too, not sure if he last to the second round pick, but he might in such a stacked draft. If they have the second round pick earmarked for QB and want XSF, 1.26 (or maybe after a surgical trade down) could be a good place to take him.

Seemingly Watkins would decrease chance of WR, and Robinson/Matthews the chance of OL (in which case RT gets shunted to guard?) at 1.26, with CB equally likely either way.

NYJ (1.18) an obvious WR destination, KC (1.23) might be, CAR (1.28), too, but after CLE. Evans and almost certainly OBJ will be gone, but 1-2 of Lee, Cooks and Benjamin could be there.

and well.... this is a rocking team, with playoffs written all over it

From a value standpoint it wouldnt seem like Watkins should be the pick. Seems like using a lot of assets on the WR position since Gordon is a true #1, and then using a top 5 pick on another WR when Gordon is like 24 years old.

However, IF Watkins becomes a legit stud type player..................................that offense could throw up some monster years if we manage to find a top 10 type QB in the next year or so.

I am not rooting for Watkins to be the pick, but certainly would prefer him at 4 over one of these Qbs.

When pettine came to town, I fully expect him to turn this underachieving defense into a top 10 crew. he really has little excuse not to... the pieces are all there. he is a defensive guru as well... top 10 "near floor" should be expected.

The brass is clearly thinking the same way. We have problems scoring. Gordon or not... defense is pretty tight, so load up on Offense, get the best WR bar none, and an insurance policy at the same time.

Id have zero issue w Watkins being the pick... Id actually love it

• his buffalo defense last year was ranked 10 in yards 20th in points - borderline top 10 at best
• cleveland's was 9th in yards and 23rd in points - borderline top 10 at best
• he is a first time HEAD COACH, not a Dcoord, he has a whole team to worry about
• he has a first time Dcoord as well
• he has a team that has been 5 wins or less for 6 straight years

is it possible, perhaps even likely this team has a top 10 defense? absolutely

is that the floor? no way, not close

the expectations in here are what make me chuckle. y'all EXPECT this to be a powerhouse playoff team in one season. It kind of puts the expectations and quick trigger of the owner in perspective. This coaching staff this team and this GM MAY need some time to grow, based on this thread no one wants to give them that. Get Sammy Watkins and lets buy our playoff tickets. So what if this team is 5-11 or 6-12? Will it be a crappy regime or unreal expectations?

there are plenty of questions here that could make this a tough season, though there is plenty of promise that could also make it a great season. That's why the floor talk is amusing.

with another year, stability, a guy who knows his ####, and the right draft picks - I see no reason for a mediocre season.

I wont be mad if we dont make playoffs... Im used to that. I will be mad however, if we arent at least a 500 team... 9-7 or 10-6 to me, Is completely realistic

Fisher sounds as if Rams will pass on Watkins

ORLANDO, FLA. • Make no mistake, Rams coach Jeff Fisher likes Sammy Watkins, the gifted wide receiver from Clemson.

“He’s very, very explosive,” Fisher said. “I mean, he’s good with the ball. He’s good without the ball. He’s one of those guys that can pluck a ball at his ankles running full speed. He’s gonna be a very, very good pro.”

The question is: Does Fisher like Watkins enough to pluck him at No. 2 overall in the draft? It could be a smokescreen, but it doesn’t sound like it.

“I think with what we have on the roster right now, we can provide (quarterback) Sam (Bradford) with the talent to where we can win a lot of games,” Fisher said. “We’re expecting improvement. We’re still seeing improvement from (receivers), for example, Brian Quick, Chris Givens who are going into their third year.

“We expect significant improvement and more contribution from Tavon (Austin) and Stedman (Bailey). And I’m not disappointed in any way in what Austin Pettis has done in a backup role.”

The vibe all along from Rams Park this offseason has been that offensive line and the secondary are higher priorities than wide receiver. And Fisher’s comments seem to fit in with that premise.

The Rams have taken four receivers in the their two drafts under Fisher and general manager Les Snead, picking one in each of the first four rounds: Austin in the first (2013), Quick in the second (2012), Bailey in the third (2013), and Givens in the fourth (2012).


Perhaps the thinking is that that’s enough investment in one position over the short term, and that continued patience is needed. If you throw in Pettis, who was taken in the third round in 2011 during the Steve Spagnuolo-Billy Devaney regime, that’s five wideouts. And if the Rams end up signing Tennessee Titans wideout Kenny Britt, that’s six. The team might think it has enough at the position.

Then again, if the team passes on Watkins and he turns out to be the best wide receiver to come out in several years as some draftniks have proclaimed, the Rams might regret the decision.

Either way, there are plenty of options at No. 2 overall, and Fisher spoke freely about them at the NFC coaches breakfast Wednesday.

For starters, he didn’t dismiss the possibility of taking South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney at No. 2, even though the team is stacked at defensive end.

“I’ve learned over the years that you never have enough pass rushers,” Fisher said. “And I think not only us, but other teams that are in our situation, are creative enough to find ways to get (Clowney) on the field and put him in position to make plays.”

Fisher didn’t regard Clowney’s lack of sack production last season (three) as a red flag.

“Not if you watch the games, it’s not,” Fisher said. “Because the effort’s there. You’ve got to give offenses credit, too. I mean they were aware of where he was. They turned the center towards him. When the ball came out, they’d check out with backs just like we do in our league with good rushers.

“So no, you see a lot of other really big plays throughout the year. Consistent big plays, whether they’re chase plays down the field or plays against the run.”

The Rams certainly are taking a long look at the top three offensive tackles in the draft: Greg Robinson of Auburn, Jake Matthews of Texas A&M and Taylor Lewan of Michigan. Lewan is more likely under consideration at No. 13 overall — the second of the Rams’ two first-round picks — although he might not last to 13.

A lot of the media mock drafts have Robinson as the Rams’ pick at No. 2.

“He’s young. I believe he’s got tremendous upside,” Fisher said. “Probably has not taken as many snaps in a pro-style offense as Lewan, the Michigan tackle. But he’s very athletic and he has flexibility — he could move in, play guard or the other tackle as well. Probably gonna take him a little more time.”

But don’t forget about Matthews, the son of Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews — who once played for Fisher. Fisher thinks Jake is as competitive as his father and will be as durable and versatile in the pros.

But is Jake as athletic as his father?

“I’ll have to tell you after the private workout,” Fisher said. “Don’t know. I would assume so.”

Besides the upcoming private workout, the Rams held a formal, or “suite” interview with him last month at the NFL scouting combine. Both the private workout and suite visit are indicators of strong interest by a team in a player.

As for Lewan, Fisher said: “Very well-coached. Very consistent. Finishes plays. What you see on tape, that’s what everybody would look for — that type of tackle.”

Lewan currently has some legal issues — he faces an arraignment April 8 on three charges related to a fight outside an Ann Arbor, Mich., restaurant last Dec. 1.

“It certainly is gonna require that you do a little bit more background and research on him,” Fisher said.

Of course, when draft day rolls around, some of these options might be out of play if the team trades down from No. 2. So far it’s quiet on that front.

‘We’ve not really had any discussion with anybody,” Fisher said. “That doesn’t mean to say we won’t.”

I agree with everything in this article.

It doesn't sound like the Rams will take Watkins.

They have invested a heck of a lot of high picks in the WR position recently and they may wind up signing WR Kenny Britt.

One thing I'll add is the Rams are talking-up DE Jadeveon Clowney because they want Atlanta to trade-up to their pick to take him. If that doesn't transpire I think they take OT Greg Robinson and don't have any regrets.

So if the draft unfolds with the top-three picks like so:

1. HOU - QB Blake Bortles

2. STL - OT Greg Robinson

3. JAX - QB 'EITHER' Bridgewater OR Manziel

That leaves Clowney for us to either take or to trade our pick.

you certainly can be 9-7. if things work out

but 7-9 would be a LARGE improvement. You still don't know what you have in Hoyer, you still don;t know if Gordon will behave, IF you take Watkins then IS he as good as expected and evens so is there an adjustment period? Might the coach and/or GM need to learn on the job a bit and make a mistake or two?

I am really not trying to rip the browns, and the optimism in here is actually quite commendable, but some of it is getting a bit out of control. If it is going to take this regime 3 years to get settled in, find its qb and other players, and make a run at the playoffs isn't that acceptable? It should be. But when the floor is 10-6 and the floor is top 10 defense and anything less than double last year's wins will be a disappointment it sets a different tone

compare this team to jax or oak and you seem to be moving in the right direction, that is certain. And a team that challenges for the playoffs is not out of the question. I am just not certain before the coach has coached a game, before the gm has made a draft pick, that I can buy into those as expectations.

The buzz surrounding Chip Kelly and how he wanted/needed a running QB in order for his offense to work never materialized. He chose Foles over Vkck who he just cut and then a few days ago he signed Sanchez. Obviously we never saw the influx of read-option mobile QBs that the media was infatuated with a short while ago.

No one paid a draft pick for Mark Sanchez or MIke Vick, both former high first round starting QBs but Marvez thinks someone might for Terrell Pryor?

Farmer showed interest in but was reluctant to pay a late pick for former solid starting QB Matt Schaub who played under Kyle Shanahan where he had his best production and Matt would have been a good fit as a backup to help Shanahan install his offense.

Pryor will likely be cut and we still might not be interested even if we didn't have pay any draft picks.

This is going to be a very unfavorable opinion, but I wouldn't pick a 2nd WR until the 3rd Rd. My target is Jarvis Landry, who has very strong and arguably the best hands in this draft. He also has no problem going over the middle catching passes. I would also want to pick a guy like Jeff Janis with the 2nd 4th rd pick for depth. You also throw in what the possibility Charles Johnson may do and this position can solidify very quickly without the overkill of using a high draft pick.

if you like a qb then pick him. If you don't then wait. Simple concept that most gm's continue to screw up.

I don't want him for what if's either. If he gives us the best chance to win and if our guy, then that's who I want as well. The what if portion of my post was more of an afterthought. It should never be the main reason for taking Watkins at 4.

I dont think our brass, nor any brass in the NFL is dumb enough to draft a guy at 4 as strictly an "insurance policy".

If we take him, it's with the idea that the Browns need to put points on the board to win games. Gordon is the game-plan of every team now. Tate coming in will force defenses to be a little more honest, but a guy like Watkins opens the field completely for everyone - including himself.

How are teams going to play us w an offense of gordon, watkins, cameron and tate? not too many DC's inthe league have the genius to put up a road block on that.

With a tight ship on defense (and let's be honest, last season our defense underachieved bigtime, imo... and this season our defense is already better and now have a Defensice guru at the helm) and potentially one of the league's most dangerous offenses.... we could see something special grow here.

When's the last time you heard a fan of any other team say they feared the Browns? I think Farmer would licking his chops at running a team like that. You dont draft Watkins solely for what HE does on his own - but also how he's going to open the field for everyone else as well.
