Cleveland Browns (8 Viewers)

Man, I am really rooting for your boy Johnny, as much as any player I have that wasn't a Raider.

I have zero strong feelings on whether or not he can be a winning franchise QB for your team, I am terrible at evaluating college QBs. I truly don't know if he can survive and win in the league.

But if I was a Browns fan, I would feel the same way as if the Raiders had drafted him at 5: scared and excited.

If he hits, you just get the feeling he's gonna hit big. Not wind up being some Andy Dalton, but I guy that wins games you would have lost if he wasn't there. That's huge to me. Not a lot of guys that you can say that about. Guys like that get on a run, and win Super Bowls.

I get the same feeling watching the Manziel story unfold that I got when Deion Sanders was coming out. People HATED him, the showmanship, the flair, etc. And they were missing out. Missing out on watching a special player. People rooting against these guys that show a little personality are missing the boat. The money sign, when he walked on stage on Draft Day? ####### awesome.

And here's the best part, which no one is talking about: He was a late first rounder! The investment is minimal. go to www.drafthistory.com, and check out late first rounders. See how many you wouldn't trade for a chance at the kind of special JFF's potential offers. Missing on a late first rounder is not some franchise death knell, like say, dropping 60 mill on Jamarcus Russell. Such a great risk at that price.

NFL is gonna be a better product if this kid is the goods.

Yes, the text sent them into a tizzy. That's why they had already been trying to trade up for him for over an hour. Cuz they knew he was gonna text the QB coach who would then text the owner who would then mandate the pick. :rolleyes:

Most people reacting to "the story" have no idea what they are talking about. They didn't bother to look at all the quotes. They didn't bother to look a little deeper beyond "the story".Just like the people reacting to JFF being called "the backup" by the owner.

The networks don't have a story unless they paint it so that the text made a big impact. The facts state otherwise. Even if it was the final nail in the coffin, I don't take issue with that.

The Browns have also said they were looking to trade up earlier in the draft to secure the #1 QB on their board. The facts are, the Browns like Manziel, and Manziel liked the Browns.

Still not so sure the things people are saying AFTER the draft are all the more truthful than things said before it.

Every see the 30 for 30 about the QB class with ELway, Marino, Kelly?? Kelly hated Buffalo, and it was like the only team he didnt want to get drafted by. When they drafted, he immediately did interviews saying how much he loved Buffalo.

Also, every GM and coach will say the guy they drafted was at the top of their boards.

I am not saying these guys are lying.......................but by no means do I assume they are telling the truth, either.

There was 1 QB taken before the Browns took one, so at worst he was #2 (ignoring conspiracy theory). All the reports I've ever read never led me to the conclusion that we were ever that hot for Bortles. I don't think they ever had to say JFF was atop their list to come to the conclusion post draft that they got their guy. Going in, we had a sense from their comments that they had ONE guy well enough above the rest to make a point of it. Sure, that could also have been draft posturing. But if people want to hitch their wagon to the owner overuling the football people and forcing the pick/trade, based on nothing, then that's their prerogative.

Would be funny though for a GM to say "yeah we wanted Bortles but settled for Johnny".................maybe might give Johnny a giant chip on his shoulder and make him a HOF-er, who knows :tebow:

I understand players need to earn their roles, but sometimes rookies do that with out stepping on the field when the other player sucks.

Thigpen? With a straight face you let him get under center before Manziel?

Cleveland isnt even being serious with their approach and that could be just as damning as starting him too early.

Thigpen took first team reps ahead of Hoyer too. Relax guy. It's just OTAs.

I kind of agree. Its not like they owe any deference to Tyler Thigpen, who was signed this offseason as a street free agent. In the grand scheme it will mean nothing of course, but this reeks of trying too hard to make a point. It makes all the sensein the world to give Hoyer first team reps, but Thigpen over Manziel? Not so much.

Brian Hoyer (ACL surgery) got the first rep as the Browns opened their minicamp Tuesday.
Just 7 1/2 months removed from his ACL tear, Hoyer was reportedly moving well despite a bulky brace. Tyler Thigpen was the second quarterback through, followed by Johnny Manziel.

Hoyer sat on 11 on 11 reps is what I saw.

Regardless, getting bent out of shape over reps during May OTAs is beyond ridiculous.

 
Probably not worth much, but Thomas was heaping praise on Bitonio. Athletic, hard worker, asking questions and wanting to learn, etc.

I know, what does that have to do with Johnny???? Apologize in advance.

i have heard consistently great things about Bitonio since the Sr Bowl.
 
Don't forget Paul McQuistan. Looks like he's a possibility, too. Someone in Seattle did a nice job for Marshawn Lynch...

It's an obvious hoax and not a "real" lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed by a woman named Samantha Schacher, though we're led to believe she's not actually the one who filed it. Schacher is a CNN contributor and co-host on relationship expert Dr. Drew's show. The lawsuit, which is linked below, reads like a high schooler wrote it up. "Schacher" specifically mentions how Manziel has a "small penis" and that he admitted he "does steroids." She goes on to say how Manziel repeatedly sends her nude pictures over social media. The plaintiff is "scared to death" and is seeking a laughable $25 million. It's pure comedy and actually worth the read. Manziel won't face any charges.

My $.02...

I'm not so concerned about where JF$ spends a weekend, in Vegas, at Bernie's, at the Caddilac Ranch, or wherever. I am hopeful that the immaturity wears off at some point, though, and doesn't impact his production in the meantime.

If he hadn't acted like the kid he is, I'd be entirely unconcerned.

Story from a few days ago.

His college team is having trouble finding anyone who has his leadership abilities. This article says he's undersized and needs to work on his pad level but excelled in coverage and that was a weakness at the LBer position for CLeveland so I guess he will be uutilzed in coverage for sure and he has solid leadership skills which is something I didn't know about the young man so I would imagine his upside is brighter than I thought at first glance.

Ever since the Browns selected Iowa linebacker Christian Kirksey in the third round (No. 71 overall) in the NFL Draft, Iowa linebackers coach LeVar Woods has been on the recruiting trail trying to find another Christian Kirksey.

It isn’t going well.

“I’m out here on the road recruiting desperately, trying to find a guy like him and I’m striking out,” Woods said. “His energy, his leadership, is very rare. I’ve been out here for four weeks in Florida and Texas and Georgia. It’s hard to find a guy like him.”

Woods added that he’d do “anything for that kid,” and that Kirksey is “an incredible person,” even someone who’s close to his family.

Much of this comes after the Iowa coaching staff, due to the assets they had at their disposal, found that the best combination of linebackers to put on the field could only be accomplished if Kirksey was willing and able to play out of position. Woods said Kirksey (6-foot-1, 233 pounds) was the team’s best weak-side linebacker, and that that’s where he should have played. But he was also the best linebacker in coverage, so they put him in the “Leo” spot, which put him in coverage situations.

“He was selfless about it. Never complained,” Woods said. “He did it with a smile and led his teammates and for that, I’m grateful.”

Kirksey showcasing what he can do in pass coverage might have been a blessing in disguise, as it was likely a key factor in the Browns’ selection of him. The team also signed linebacker Karlos Dansby this offseason, one of the NFL’s better linebackers when dropping back in coverage.

It’s a clear emphasis on that trait in the team’s linebacking corps under new coach Mike Pettine. Kirksey has it, and took on more of a challenge than just covering tight ends. He also served as a de facto nickel cornerback at times for Iowa, covering the opponent’s slot receiver. And he showed he can run with most players on the field after he posted a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash at his pro day.

“What Christian does well is he has very good feet, very good footwork and very good natural instincts to the ball,” Woods said. “He can put his body in a position that most people can’t.”

Kirksey has been listed by most scouting services as an outside linebacker. He said he expects to play more inside linebacker with the Browns, along with Dansby. The Browns also have Craig Robertson, but he was regularly beaten in coverage by tight ends last season.

Kirksey could also make an immediate impact on the Browns’ special teams unit, a regular landing place for rookies.

Kirksey just wants to contribute.

“Just to go out there and give it my all, be a factor on special teams, wherever the coach needs me to play, just be a spark player and be a team player,” he said. “I’m expected to go out there and hustle, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

He made an instant impact on special teams at Iowa and almost single-handedly turned around the Hawkeyes’ kickoff coverage unit.

In 2012, Iowa started the year poorly and had a major problem covering kickoffs — six games in, the Hawkeyes were near the bottom in the Big Ten statistically. The coaching staff moved Kirksey over to that unit and in his first game, he had a couple of special-teams tackles.

By the end of the season, Iowa had climbed the rankings and finished with the best coverage unit in the conference.

“It all had to do with Christian going there,” Woods said. “We put Christian on that team for his energy, his leadership. Guys respect him.”

Woods said if there’s one thing Kirksey needs to improve upon, it’s his pad level, as Kirksey is athletic but undersized for an NFL linebacker. He can bulk up, but keeping his pad level low will help as well.

Still, it’s Kirksey’s leadership in the locker room and on special teams that stands out to Woods. And it’s the reason he’s sweeping the Southeast trying to find a Kirksey clone.

Oh and free agent TE Jeremiah Finley just got full medical clearance and their is an unknown team 'reportedly' interested and taking a peak.

We signed the top free agent WRs and if Finely is medically cleared he would be the top free agent TE available and we still need a big red-zone target so... :shrug:

Free-agent TE Jermichael Finley (neck) has been given full medical clearance by his doctor, according to his agent, Blake Baratz.

Footballguys view: Rumor has it he has a meeting with a mystery team. If Finley can stay healthy, he could be a useful addition to a team. One question we have: should we have pause when he was cleared by a guy (Dr. Joseph Maroon) which the book League of Denial basically names as someone who, despite knowing the dangers of concussions given his work with guys like Merril Hoge (who he told to retire because of them), downplayed research about their severity? Food for thought.
 
thanks for the update on Kirksey guys. picked him up in my rookie draft based on a lot of chatter about his ability to stay on the field.

Somebody in Vegas made a huge bet on the Browns to win the SB. That one bet tumbled the odds from 200 - 1 all of the way down to 30 - 1.

The person who made the bet is either taking a wild shot or maybe they know something, possibly with the appealed suspension of Gordon? I dunno but for the odds to change that much they may have been taking more than a wild roll of the dice.

MGM oddsmaker Jay Rood told Betting Talk that a “four figure” wager on the Browns last week caused MGM to slash its odds from 100-to-1 all way down to 30-to-1. Also, Rood indicated to Betting Talk that wagering on the Browns had picked up since the draft, when the Browns made a major splash by selecting quarterback Johnny Manziel No. 22 overall.

It’s important to note that future book odds — especially with long shots like Cleveland — can be more a reflection of the sports book’s potential liability on the team than anything else. In the end, oddsmakers have to adjust prices to manage risk....
