Cleveland Browns (5 Viewers)

https://www.beaconjournal.com/sports/20200109/browns-interviewing-vikings-oc-kevin-stefanski-for-second-consecutive-year

...Haslam said DePodesta would run this search but ownership would make the final decision on the hire.

So the multimillion dollar question is this: If DePodesta were to push for Stefanski, would Haslam go with the recommendation?

Haslam hasn’t followed DePodesta’s advice in the past two coaching searches, and the owner has been burned by those decisions.

In 2016, Haslam went with his choice, Hue Jackson, instead of DePodesta’s pick, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott. Last year, Haslam went with former general manager John Dorsey’s recommendation, Kitchens, instead of Stefanski...

...Stefanski would give the Browns a chance at the organizational alignment Haslam has stressed he’s seeking. A trio of DePodesta, Stefanski and a like-minded GM, say, for instance, Andrew Berry, a former Browns VP of player personnel who left for a job with the Philadelphia Eagles last year but remains coveted by the Haslams, would be united through their commitment to analytics.

By surviving two head coaching changes and spending all 14 of his seasons as an NFL assistant coach with the Vikings, Stefanski has demonstrated an ability to work well with others.
https://www.brownszone.com/2020/01/09/vikings-offensive-coordinator-kevin-stefanski-interviewing-with-browns-again-after-finishing-runner-up-to-freddie-kitchens-last-year/

...The Vikings ranked eighth in the NFL in points (25.4) and 16th in yardage (353.5), including sixth rushing (133.3). Quarterback Kirk Cousins was fourth with a 107.4 passer rating, throwing 26 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Stefanski has learned from assistant head coach/offensive adviser Gary Kubiak this season and implemented a diverse and balanced system with a heavy emphasis on the run game.

“He’s been exceptional,” Kubiak said, per the Duluth News Tribune. “It’s a great opportunity for him this season to do it on a full-time basis. He’s doing a great job with it.”

...Jimmy Haslam wants alignment within the organization, with everyone in agreement philosophically and pulling in the same direction. His best chance could be with DePodesta, Stefanski and an analytics-heavy approach. Eagles vice president of football operations Andrew Berry would then be a strong candidate to return as general manager.

Haslam plans to hire the coach first, then give him strong input into the GM decision.

DePodesta, Berry and Stefanski would form an Ivy League power trio. DePodesta and Berry went to Harvard, and Stefanski was an all-league safety and captain at the University of Pennsylvania...

Minnesota Media giving Kubiak props for this year's offensive explosion, not Stefanski - "It's the Best of Kubiak's career!"

“This is my first year doing this,” Stefanski said Thursday. “Having somebody that I can bounce ideas off of both during the week and during the game … I think it’s a really great working environment.”
Not only has Kubiak’s mentorship been influential on Stefanski but Kirk Cousins as well. The quarterback is on pace for the most wins of his career and the fewest interceptions as a full-time starter. His five-game stretch without a fumble is the longest of his career, thanks in large part to the way Kubiak has helped gear the offense to Cousins’ strengths by moving the pocket, rolling Cousins outside and developing a strong screen game.
Interesting article.  If Kubiak comes with Stefanski, I think it's a no-brainer.  Stefanski alone? Was a year enough to learn/pick Kubiak's brain?  How much of the offense was Kubiak and how much was Stefanski?  Also makes me wonder if Stefanski would have cut the mustard last year if he was the pick instead of Freddie.  Would we have been one and done with Stefanski sans Kubiak's game planning/mentoring/offensive schemes?

(his first ever draft pick was Knowshon Moreno, and he traded three picks to move up and draft Tim Tebow in round one).

Basically, McDaniels thought he was bullet-proof as the former protégé of an actual living legend, and that mentality ultimately got him burned.

"...he was too much of a control freak..."

“The biggest issue with Josh McDaniels’ first go-round as an NFL head coach came down to power. Denver Owner Pat Bowlen gave McDaniels executive/personnel authority, which was too much.."

"The franchise paid for McDaniels’ mistakes. During his tenure as head coach, McDaniels alienated every player in the locker room and most of his coaching staff, to the point that nobody was willing to fight for him.

By 2010, McDaniels’ second and final season, his message and vision had ultimately fallen on deaf ears because of how he treated people..."

...Any team who hires Josh McDaniels must guard against giving him too much power. There must be checks and balances for McDaniels...

...McDaniels got so caught up in instilling his own views and making moves that he felt were right that he completely neglected the relationships within the building. Nobody is successful in a game like football without leaning and depending on those around them.

Peter King out here throwing some mud at the pre-concieved notions of a 50/50 Candidate pool for Browns HC....

Also on @DaleKeefeWEEI, Peter King says he believes the Browns job will come down to 49ers DC Robert Saleh, Patriots OC Josh McDaniels and Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy.
Really surprised to not see Stefanski on that list.  Bieniemy is a name that is constantly getting overlooked.  I thought Cincy would have taken him last year. Players seem to like him, and he has a solid history of helping RBs achieve great years/stats.

How to make a leopard pick his spots - or - The Redemption of Josh McDaniels

"I was by myself—just me and my thoughts," McDaniels says. "I had very little interaction with other people. I had time to go back over everything we did in Denver, the decisions we made, step by step. I could slow it down."

There were many lessons to be considered, about big things and small:

He continued the dialogue with his father and reached out to others he trusted, including Ted Crews, who was in charge of Rams public relations at the time, and Bill O'Brien, who had succeeded him as offensive coordinator in New England.

"He was more willing to take advice," Thom McDaniels says.

He had some long talks with Tony Dungy, his one-time rival with the Colts. Dungy told him he needed to self-reflect every year, whether he was fired or won the Super Bowl. They talked about the importance of being yourself and trusting instincts. Having fun is not a bad thing. Dungy stressed that a head coach's consistency with a team really mattered. They talked about the formula that makes a good coaching staff. Dungy gave him some ideas about keeping his faith at the center of his life as his coaching world turned.

"I could relate to where he was at the time, having been fired myself," Dungy says. "He's a very smart guy, and we just talked about finding the next spot—the one that would be best for him."

"I would look at his years in Denver as a positive, not a negative," one NFC general manager says. "It made him realize he needs to rely on his strengths. He now realizes that Belichick is a rarity, and no one can run the show like him. [But] like Bill, Josh can adapt to any circumstance, and he can do this with limited prep time. ...

"If I were an owner, hiring Josh would be a no-brainer."
Splattered throughout the article, the author outlines the lessons learned by McDaniels:

Lesson Learned: Take time to digest information and make good, PATIENT decisions.

Lesson Learned: LISTEN better. To anyone who tells me something. There are so many people who can help us win & have wisdom I don't have. I will do my part in teaching but can never stop learning myself. Best results come from a group effort!

Lesson Learned: Be considerate of assistant coaches' time, their emotions & make sure they always know how much I care. Push them, hold them accountable and love each one of them personally. We win as a team, we lose as a team and I always take responsibility for the losses. They get the credit when we win—they deserve it.

Lesson Learned: I wanted to practice until I felt we totally had it. Wrong Choice. I need to lighten the load and REALIZE the value in allowing the players to feel good about that. Players who feel you are taking care of them will give you all they have during the week and on Sunday.

Lesson Learned: Stay fresh & healthy—don't overdo it—it will eventually burn me out!

Lesson Learned: Lean on my faith and be myself—I love this game and enjoy working hard at it to compete with the very best. Trust our process and enjoy each day—it's a blessing to work in this game—let people see how much I treasure this privilege.

Tony Dungy✔@TonyDungy

Haven’t read the article but I can tell you there is NO excuse big enough to justify this.

It’s one thing to go back on your word to an organization.

But having assistant coaches leave jobs to go with you then leave them out to dry is indefensible.

For COMFORT??

Why did Josh McDaniels walk away from the Colts?

For starters, he felt more comfortable with the Patriots than he did with Indianapolis

Per Mike Reiss (12/27/19): Dante Scarnecchia was talking about the run game when the discussion turned to his admiration for Josh McDaniels.  Offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia said he would never have come out of retirement if Josh McDaniels wasn’t the offensive coordinator. In raving about McDaniels professionally and personally, he says, “Someone is going to be very lucky to have him as a head coach some day.”

On a side note...Looks like Freddie may not be out of a job for long...

Per Jordan Ranaan: New Giants coach Joe Judge is expected to speak with former Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens about a spot on his offensive staff, per source. The two worked together at Mississippi State.

Sounds like if Freddie goes, he'll bring some of his offensive staff from CLE with him to NY.
Heard this earlier today and chuckled to myself. Good for Freddie, I liked the guy, hope he does well but oh baby are the Giants gonna be a dumpster fire next year.

Great article by Doueschuk on McDaniels...Expect Josh McDaniels to Recommend Sweeping Browns Makeover

Notable Quotes...

On works by with DePo: The guess is that McDaniels and the 47-year-old DePodesta would find themselves kindred spirits who fall into good conversations, as opposed to rigid dogma. McDaniels will want to impress upon the Browns that he believes analytics can help a football operation with the right overall organization.

On his time in Denver: He hopes prospective employers view those days as he does, as being in the distant past, yet priceless in terms of learning what to do and what not to do.

On the Indy incident: the Browns will ask McDaniels what happened with the Colts. The issue is not expected to be a deal-breaker.

Brady on McDaniels: "I have so much respect for Josh and what he does for me, what he does for our team. He’s just a great coach.

“He’s got a lot of poise. He’s got a lot of discipline. I hope he doesn’t go anywhere. He’s one of my best friends. I’d love for him to coach me the rest of my life.”

Interesting Ranking: Late in 2018, ESPN ranked the NFL’s best play-callers, placing McDaniels at No. 2 behind Sean McVay, and ahead of Kyle Shanahan.

All the press he's getting, sure looks like McDaniels is the guy.

I prefer McDaniels.  No idea why.  Maybe cause he has a little bit of youth along with some head coaching experience, plus all his experience running a quality offense.

Didnt he win a playoff game with Tebow?

I’ve said it before, i’ll say it again.

there’s no way they hire a first time head coach this year.

that rules out everyone except McDaniels.

(and Schwartz, but seriously?)

gotcha.  didn’t realize it was high schools.  That narrows it quite a bit.
It may not just be high school's. I recall reading a some time ago they have several kids. It also doesn't mean it's final either. If things go sour then they catch a flight and just don't show up to the school. I just know Iggy was expecting her.

I just read she’s from Parma. It was from another board and just a random poster on that board, but if true, that is interesting.
This is true....went to Valley Forge and still has family around the area.

Josh is from Akron/Canton area.

Baskin & Phelps have been reading twitter the entire show about all the places McDaniels is showing up around Cleveland. Pretty funny

Hearing it's almost a done deal.  A few details  to iron out, but positive signs from those up in Berea.  Even OBJ showed up for a meet/greet.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw McDaniels pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

I won't believe it until he buys a home in Strongsville!   :lmao:

”The Browns have already climbed Belichick’s coaching tree, plucking Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini as coaches in 2005 and 2009. Crennel has the distinction of being the Browns’ longest-tenured head coach since 1999 (four seasons), as well as the best single-season record over that span (10-6).”

wow that’s bad.

After years of crossing my fingers for this or that or whomever, I've come to a place where I'm resigned to being stuck with whomever they choose.  Hard to get excited anymore.

so it seems like the Browns are now going to interview each of the GMs that their top HC candidates recommended?

this is going to take some more time.

interesting approach.

Basically.

The guy from the Colts has ties to Saleh while in Seattle.

I’ve had the feeling all along the hires were going to be same day or day apart and the initial press conf would have them both there. No way they’d hire Saleh, for example, if they were not able to pair a Saleh approved GM with him. I think the message has been consistent that they aren’t forcing a coach/GM marriage.

We’ll see, certainly possible this all goes up in flames.

also hearing they are requesting permission to interview Berry, who they were connecting to i think Stefanski?

and yeah, i have to give them some credit if that’s what they’re doing. no guarantee it works, but it does align with what they’ve been saying publicly.

and at least it is a strategy rather than a free for all.  I still don't really care for any of the likely/available candidates, so I will just cross my fingers and hope for the best.
