The Redskins reportedly expect Clinton Portis to play in Week 1.Portis is questionable with a shoulder injury. ESPN's John Clayton says Portis likely will play and "is getting his body ready" to shoulder the full load. But with the injury, Portis is still a shaky fantasy start against an impressive Minnesota interior line.Source: ESPN Insider

Shawn Springs is listed as doubtful and Clinton Portis is listed as questionable for Monday night' season-opening game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Springs underwent surgery on his abdomen three weeks ago and has not practiced or played in any games since the Redskins' first preseason game.

If Springs is unable to play, then it is expected that veteran cornerback Kenny Wright would assume a starting role along-side Carlos Rogers. Mike Rumph and Ade Jimoh would serve in nickel packages.

Portis injured his shoulder in the Redskins' first preseason game and has been sidelined ever since. If Portis is unable to play, then it is expected that Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright would see time at running back.

The Redskins did not practice on Wednesday. The team resumes practice on Thursday afternoon and will continue to work through Saturday in preparation for the season opener.

Head coach Joe Gibbs has said that he would like both Portis and Springs to see action on the practice field before determining whether to activate them for the game.

The Redskins also list defensive end Renaldo Wynn as probable for Monday's game against the Vikings. Wynn is expected to return to practice later this week.

Is it just me or is that really lame play on words.... :banned:

He's listed as questionable. That means 50/50. Oddly enough, 50% of the reports say he will play and 50% say he won't. Tomorrow's and Friday's practices could tell us a lot.

 I will be listening to Redskins Radio(espnxxx) tomorrow to see if there are any updates. Hopefully Redskins Lunch with Larry Michael will have an update on his status.

this one is from CBS

Clinton Portis, RB WASNews: Redskins.com confirms that RB Clinton Portis (shoulder) is questionable for Week 1 vs. Minnesota. The Redskins did not practice on Wednesday; their Week 1 game is Monday night. Analysis: Fantasy owners who own Portis better get on the horn and cut a trade for either Betts or Duckett; it sure looks like Duckett will be the team's short yardage/goal-line back instead of a consistent backup choice. Owners may have to wait until Monday night to make a decision on Portis -- play this one carefully.
i listened to a FF radio show from some other site and they were reporting that he'd be ready to go... i think they were citing Salsbery (sp?) on ESPN radio as their sourceas mentioned earlier... tomorrow's and Friday's practice will hopefully shed a lil more light on the situation

Just back from vacation, so sry if I missed it, but has CP even been practicing "live" (i.e. taking hits)? I find it hard to believe they'd start him after missing most of the pre-season and not getting the shoulder "tested" in at least some practice. I'm sure Snyder is gripping after the less than stellar pre-season in WAS, but I doubt they risk the season for one game (even on MNF).

This seems like more of a Gibbs posturing move to keep MN guessing.

Though Benson is back practicing now and he was about the same injury and around a week before CP.

As a Portis owner (x2), AND the fact that it's likely going to be a MONDAY game time decision, I'm likely not rostering him this week. I'd rather not just throw in Duckett and pray for a goal line carry or two.

no practice time yet... but they are practicing the next three days. He has been doing rehab and stuff in the weight room and everything seems to be coming along fine.then we have Gibbs saying 2 things which sort of conflict:a. It's up to Portis, if he says he can play... he's inb. He wants to see Portis practice before he starts himsoooo... i guess he's probably told Clinton that it's his decision to play w/ the stipulation that he get in at least 1 or 2 practices firstso the next two days are crucial... if he practices and there are no set backs... it sounds like he'll be in

Can we please keep all updates to one thread?? There's like 3 or 4 going right now, mods can we sticky one of these??

BTW, thanks for all the updates fellas!!!! Keep 'em coming.....

Portis looks fine dancing on the NFL Network commercial!!!

Questionable theoretically means 50/50. But on average it really means 75/25 or possibly even higher. Probable theoretically means 75/25 but it usually means 95/5. Also - it does vary by team somewhat. Anyway - I'm in the same situation - will watch over the next couple days and then decide. My next best option is Rhodes. I drafted 3rd last night and got Alexander and Portis stayed around so I sacked up and took him in the 2nd. If he can play through this shoulder thing my team will be really tough to beat.

The key is if Clinton practices today and Friday.

I hope he starts but if he is held out one week there is no harm in that.

Portis is as tough as they come so I do expect him to play especially in prime time.

listening to Redskins Radio now and no update on Portis at this time. I am pretty sure they will have an update on him during the 12:00PM - 1:00PM Lunch with Larry Michael show. I will post updates as I hear them.

The WTEM beat reporter hasn't wavered all week. He's been solid in saying Portis is playing.

I'm hoping Larry Michael sheds some light...the Thursday show usually has Vinny Cerrato on, so he might offer some insight. I personally think they're all towing the company line.

If I had to choose, I'd go with the WTEM reporter's take.

I would trust the WTEM beat reporter (is it still Bram Weinstein?) over anything said on the Redskin network. One is a sports/news station; the other is a PR outlet.

Bram is over on Snyder's station now (co-hosting the lunch show with Larry Michael). I could see Snyder intentionally feeding misinformation to WTEM to make them look like fools. However, the WTEM beat reporter says his source is Portis when he says Portis is playing.

I do think this is very important. I believe the beat reporter saying his source was Portis.Still no news on the Larry Michael show at this time.

Nothing with Larry. Beat reporter is coming up on WTEM after the break.

Beat reporter coming later, but apparently it's something like Groundhog Day with CP. Thursday was/is his Costume Day with the media. If he dresses up for his presser, he's playing. If he doesn't dress up or otherwise no-shows, he's not playing. So now we wait and see.

So a beat writer says Portis told him he's playing + the coach said it's up to Portis if he plays.

He's obviously cleared to play if coach would put the decision up to him. Portis is one tough SOB, so if he can play, he will play.

I'd put the odds at about 85% him playing based on info we have at this point in time.

Gibbs also said he's got to practice. Let's see what he does over the next two days.

But, it's always nice to hear officially that he's playing. If I had to guess right now if he was going to play, I'd say Yes.However, if I had to set my lineup right now, I might not start him.

My thinking is that even if he plays, he might only play a half. If the Skins get up a bunch, he'll probably sit. If they get down a bunch, he'll probably sit. I don't know. It's a tough call.

From WaPo Skins Blog:

Alright everyone. Can't tell you who has practiced until practice actually starts (2 pm), dudes and dudettes. Dang. Work with me here.Portis has been out of the building much of the day; just came back in with practice starting. Doesn't look good for him having full particiupation in practice given that, but they're ont he field for another 2 horus or so, so we'll see.

That's my thought. I'd figure they'd want him to get 2 practices in, on Fri and Sat, before they clear him to play, but that's not actually been said by anyone. We shall see.

If he doesn't practice today, sure, Friday is more important. However, if the report was that he practiced today and took hits and was fine, I wouldn't care too much about tomorrow's practice other than that he doesn't hurt himself again.
