Coming Soon: Ranking Stephen King’s Published Works (1 Viewer)

I like to rank things, and in the “Top 300 Books of All Time” thread I mentioned that for some time I had been thinking of ranking everything I’ve read by Stephen King, just for fun. It crossed my mind to do it as an official countdown here, but I wasn’t sure whether there would be enough interest to make it a worthwhile thread. Given the amount of times he has already appeared in that thread, it seems like there probably would be.

The biggest issue is that I certainly haven’t read everything he has published. He has written a ton of stuff. I think I’ve probably read about 2/3 of it. That definitely means there is enough for a robust countdown, but it will have some notable exclusions, and people can comment on that if they’d like.

I think I’ll format it somewhat like I did with my Allman Brothers countdown. The bottom-dwelling material will just be a simple list, all released as a single post with summary comments.

Then for the top X number of entries (probably the top 100), each will get its own individual post, and I’ll include basic information like publication date and genre, a rating for how scary or disturbing it is, a one-liner summary of what it’s about, and then a few sentences of my own commentary. Novels, novellas, non-fiction books, and short stories will be eligible. Screenplays and essays will not (though many of these are very good).

I can’t remember what timeline @kupcho1 gave for his countdown, but I need at least a little time to prepare and will be busy for the next couple of weeks at work anyway. I definitely don’t want to comment early on anything that has the potential to be on his list. So, I’ll plan on tentatively starting at the end of the month which hopefully give him time to finish his threat and digest it, but will be close enough to the end that people still have the list on their mind.

I may throw in some random trivia and stuff too. If people have other things they think would make this fun, let me know.

I like the idea, but I don't think I should participate. I haven't read a SK book since the early 90's. I read most of his books prior to 1987 or so.

Very interesting. I’ve read a ton of Stephen King, but not your #2. Looks like I have something to add to my reading list.
11/22/63 is a stellar read. The beginning may seem a little hokey, but stick with it and you will be rewarded. Also one of my faves by SK.
Just finished this book. I really liked it. Thought it could have been told with about 200 less pages, but that's my only nit pick. Great story, great backdrop, really liked the way it ended.

Absolutely love Nicholson and Kubrick's "shining", but somehow never read the book. It's sitting on the coffee table now and I'm just about to start it up.

Favorite King book is "the stand"

Brings up a good point that one thing I could use help with is commentary on movie adaptations. While I read a lot of horror, I'm not a huge horror movie fan and would guess I've only seen about 10 or so movies based on these stories.

It's your party here (and one I am looking forward to) but my suggestion would be to focus solely on reviewing/ranking his written work, and not including TV/movie adaptations in the conversation. King's genius is in his written words on the page, and I love the idea of celebrating that in this thread.

Update: I've got the ordering of the top 100 and have written entries for probably at least a third of them. So I should be on track to be able to start shortly after the top books countdown concludes. I like the way it's coming along.
Have you thought about posting - before your rankings - those works you haven't read and will thus be excluded from your list? That way, we have stuff to complain about right away

I was going to suggest the same thing, although more to avoid the inevitable disappointment that would come with for example getting to the top 10 and realizing one of my hidden gems isn't going to be ranked at all.

Not that I won't enjoy the grousing - that's a good reason to post them first as well. ;)

I love 11/22/63. My favorite King book is "The Wizard and the Glass" from the Dark Tower series. Honorable mention to "The Long Walk", "It" and "The Stand."

Yep I plan to do this. Of the thing that I haven't read, I don't think there will be a lot that many would consider top tier but there are definitely a few.

It's much better than the series
There's an 11-22-63 series?
Yes. I haven't watched it, though. It had a pretty big-name actor in the lead, but my marbled-filled brain has forgotten his name. I also can't recall the network that carried it, so I am absolutely zero help to you on this

These days, just being able to hit the reply button counts as a victory.

It's really well done. Stars James Franco. No idea where to find it. Maybe check up your butt.

I don't remeber the network either but I knocked it out on our flights to and from Kauai a couple summers ago as Alaska had it on their entertainment system. I believe James Franco played the lead

If i find it up there I'll report back and livestream :lmao:.

James Franco is not my mental image of Jake Epping. I had no idea this was a series. Having just finished up the book I'll have to check it out.

ETA. Good news, i found this on tubi for free. Bad news, it wasn't up my butt so no livestream. Win some you lose some. Excited to watch with the book fresh in my mind.

Rage (short story that is phenomenally written about a school shootings before they became a thing. I get why he wants it unpublished but my god I didnt think it possible to write a plausible story in the first person from a perspective of a kid shooting up his school but he did it).

I think it was originally an AT&T/Uverse production.

As with most books made into a TV series, the book is better. Although I was pleasantly surprised that the TV series held true for the most part.

Watched 3 episodes so far. Book is certainly better and i think Franco is miscast (comedy works better for him), but I'll stick with it and finish it up. It had big shoes to fill, but it's kept me entertained.
