Just now getting back into listening to music after really not at all for the last 13 years. So far, the best thing I've noticed is that there is some really awesome new Country stuff going on these days. 

New people with a great old school sound. I really can't get enough of Sturgill Simpson, Stapleton, Margo Price, Kacey Musgraves, and Brent Cobb at the moment.  Corb Lund, Cody Jinks, and the Turnpike Troubadours are pretty good too. I've got some buddies that all swear by Jason Isbell, but for some reason, he's just not my thing. I'm also not terribly knowledgeable of the old stuff, though I am in the middle of a delightful Waylon Jennings binge over the last few days. Damn, he's awesome.

Anyway, I don't know how many Country listeners are here, but I'm looking for more recommendations to check out. New people with an old school sound or maybe some older stuff I've probaby missed that I should check out.

Might be a little bit off the reservation when compared to the others you listed, but what about The Mavericks.  Last two albums since they got back together are pretty darn good.

 
There's an alt country thread that you would probably like.

For those type of guys, I'd definitely try Drive-By Truckers, Hayes Carll, Robert Earl Keen.

If you like Waylon, no reason not to listen to the rest of the Highwaymen - Johnny Cash, Willie, and Kris Kristofferson.

And I love Lyle Lovett. He's so damn good.

Thank you. I figured there must be a thread, but I didn't see it. That looks like the ticket.

And I'm excited to dig more into Cash, Willie, and Kristofferson. I've been listening to the hell out of the song "Highwayman".I've still got a lot more Cash to listen to, but "God's Gonna Cut You Down" might be my favorite song at the moment.

One old-timer I really want to like, but just can't seem to get into is Merle. He just doesn't do it for me.

I haven't heard a ton of Drive By Truckers yet, but I like what I've heard so far.

 
Jason Isbell- don't know if he's alt country, Americana etc but he's a great singer songwriter. Was in the Drive By Truckers

 
Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. Honkey Tonk Union is their most "country" sounding CD, but Americano is my favorite.

Add the Jayhawks (of course), uncle tupelo, darius Rucker, Thomas Rhett and firekid.

I do like them. I mostly only started caring about any of this because I noticed the girls at work work harder when the music right. They love Country, but it's mostly stuff you hear on the radio. They like most of this other stuff too ("alt country"? "new #### that sounds like old school ####?" or whatever it's called), but I have to make sure and keep enough mainstream stuff on there for them. 

Of the more mainstream stuff, I like Zac Brown, and I really like Little Big Town (and the broads at work really love them, especially as so many of their songs are a soundtrack for scorned women). I like Maren Morris too, but as you say about Zac Brown, she also gets really schticky.

 
Margo Price's record was my favorite of the year. In the country-southern-rock category, DBT's record is very good, Blackberry Smoke had another very good release and Tedeschi-Trucks continue to be a can't-miss show whenever they come to town.  I've been listening to a lot of Willie lately since my dad passed away in January. He played Waylon, Willie, Johnny Cash and others constantly around the house and on the road in my youth. I think Phases and Stages is my favorite, Red-Headed Stranger is also great among the massive amount of music he's created.  Lucinda Williams and John Prine also released very good records in the last year. There's a ton of good new bluegrass coming out as well, for those interested in that sort of thing.

I love her. Getting back around to listening this stuff, it was mainly her and Sturgill Simpson that really made me get curious about what's going on in the Country music world these days.

Ugh. I actually don't hate his politics but so many of his songs are overdone and suck. Courtesy of the red white and blue might just be the worst thing we did after 9/11 (ok, no but that song is horrible)

I like a lot of the mainstream country too, and they really are fantastic. Day Drinking is probably my favorite, but I'm a big fan of Better Man, Happy People, Night On Our Side, Tornado, Pontoon, and Shut Up Train. It seems about everything they do is really good.

 
Old stuff to listen to would be merle haggard, jerry jeff walker, ray wylie hubbard.  

I have always liked marty stuart.

The Old 97s are pretty good too

Saw him in New Orleans about 20 years ago, when he was fronting The Refreshments.  Awesome live show.

 
Like a lot of these acts until we got to Toby Keith and Little Big Town.

Other active recommendations are Reckless Kelly, James McMurtry and Hayes Carll. You should also check out Jason Isbell!

Best New Artist:  Stapleton

i have despised most country music from 1990 on, but agree that Stapleton and other artists are hopefully moving the genre back in the right direction...I'm not holding my breath.  I'm fine with just listening to the old school stuff.

That song is the sound of sucking out loud.

 
Randy Rogers band (more country rock/Texas dirt). Luke Bryan's "Taligates and Tan Lines" and "Kill the Nights" albums. If you like Little Big Town, you should enjoy the single "Home Alone Tonight" with Luke Bryan and Karen Fairchild :heart: .  These all kind of morph into a more modern country sound but  Cole Swindell. Jake Owen. Thomas Rhett is probably one of the hottest acts currently, but definitely not old school country.

Highly recommend going to YouTube and searching "dark country".  The mixes theclaype put together are excellent. 

 
This sounds strange but I actually like some of the newer Kid Rock stuff. I like his older stuff too, but the new stuff is pretty country but not bad.
