Culpepper to Miami (1 Viewer)

Marino vs C Pep? Wow.....Maybe AFTER Marino tore his achillies......and got old.
 C Pep is gigantic and mobile, that's part of his overall game. Marino, even in his early record setting days, was as mobile as a totem pole.
You're taking me too literally. The very fact that someone is trying to compare the two is a joke. One of them is a hall of famer.....the other has had two good seasons one good season, one great season and one utterly historic season.
Fixed
You should be his PR man. Utterly historic.....Still, comparing him to Marino is a joke.
I assume you're referring to my post, but I didn't "compare" Marino to Culpepper. There's no comparison needed -- Culpepper broke the record for the most total yards in a season in the history of the NFL. Marino was second. Is it a joke to "compare" Jerry Rice to Isaac Bruce?

How about to "compare" Jamal Lewis to Eric Dickerson?
This wasn't my battle, but YES in both cases. Jamal hasn't done nearly enough in his career and it is almost insulting comparing any WR to Rice
BTW, the Jamal Lewis to Dickerson comp was a good "choice"
Eric Dickerson set the league record with 2,105 rushing yards; Jamal Lewis is second all time with 2,066 yards. It's not my fault that Lewis came within 39 yards of Dickerson's record; if you want to take a few hundred yards away from Lewis, I suppose that would work.
There wasn't sarcasm in my last response. I meant that it really was a good comparison because Jamal had one great season and eh for the short time playing. That is similar to Culpy.

And for the record, by no means am I comparing Culpepper to superman. In my opinion, it is all about confidence with this guy [i agree with Andy, it's his head, not his body]. But his proven ceiling places him in rare company, assuming he gets the leadership he needs.

I am a big Daunte fan, but I will say that I was disappointed in the way he acted after the injury. It was labeled as his team after Moss left and he bailed on them after the injury. He could have rehabbed in Minnesota. Birk was out for the year and was helping the O-line and was in the mix all the time.

I think the Dolphins got a good deal, but I won't say the the Vikings got "took." They stuck to their 2nd round pick and they got it. They were going to cut him anyway, so they got a 2nd round pick instead of nothing, so I think they did ok. Culpepper wasn't going to play for Childress and that was that.

Good move for both.

I'm not sure what you want me to do. Rice and Bruce are 1-2 on the all-time single season receiving yards list; Rice only topped Bruce by 67 yards though. If you want to add a few hundred yards to Rice's total, I suppose that would work.
"Dan Marino played for the Dolphins when he set the record for most total yards in a season (5,077) in 1984. Now they have the guy that set the new single-season record (5,123), and all for a second round pick. If I was a Dolphins fan I'd be jumping for joy today. They may have landed one of the biggest steals in recent football history."I guess you were in fact attempting to compare greatest seasons. Ok, whatever. Not sure what that has to do with Culpepper now. If the Vikings thought there was even a chance of him playing like that again do you think they would have traded him for a 2nd round pick? Maybe you do and that's fair. I don't think they would have.

Are you in the will? I know the stats. Historic fine.
So basically your problem is my saying "utterly historic" instead of "historic"? My god, how argumentative. Hopefully you blew off some much needed steam on that anal observation. Rather than asking if I'm in his will maybe I should be asking if he peed in your cornflakes or dated your sister.
:lmao: Sorry, that was more hostile than I intended.

I don't understand the confusion. It's an interesting side-note to the trade, that's all.

FWIW, in many leagues, Culpepper has been the best fantasy QB for four seasons. Not top five or top three, but the best. Manning's record breaking season beat out Cpep in some leagues, but generally by the closest of margins even in those cases.

Culpepper has been huge. Logic might say it was only because of Moss, but he put up monster numbers even when Moss had less than 50 receptions and was hurt part of the time. And Collins didn't exactly light it up with Moss by his side.

Now I posted earlier that I'm a bit skeptical about how Cpep does this year, but I think it's naive to ignore his talent. And with Ronnie Brown, Randy McMichael and Chris Chambers, he has a solid foundation.

So when is Daunte supposed to able to play? His signing just boosted Chambers stock way up!

Does anyone have any info on Culpepper rehab? I heard somewhere (I think it was on the radio) he was on schedule or ahead of schedule.

I'd personally hope that this means MN will go after Brees instead.
Only if the shoulder is good. Otherwise, heaven forbid, I'd rather go with Johnson this year. Or trade for Schaub, if possible. Can't you just hear the howls? They take the 2nd that they get for Culpepper, use it to get Schaub, and then we have to hear the squeals of pain from Patrick Reusse and Chad Barriero of "So we essentially traded Culpepper for Schaub? Who's running that club anyway, Kevin McHale?"
Are the sportswriters in your town as predictable?:Reusse article from today's Star Tribune.

Patrick Reusse: Trade does more for QB than Vikes

Daunte Culpepper will now find himself mentioned routinely in the same sentence with Terrell Owens and Randy Moss: trouble traded at a discount.

Daunte Culpepper will now find himself mentioned routinely in the same sentence with Terrell Owens and Randy Moss: trouble traded at a discount.

He does not belong in that company. He was a solid presence in the locker room and a determined competitor. He never pulled an Owens and publicly ridiculed a teammate, and he never pulled a Moss and played only when he wanted.

It is still to be determined if he treated himself to a lap dance on a boat, but even if true, this rates only slightly ahead of Kevin Garnett flipping a basketball that taps a fan in the noggin on the meter of egregious behavior.

He never gave a traffic agent a ride on the hood of a SUV, never was found with marijuana residue in an ashtray, or an Original Whizzinator, or over the legal limit, and never was known to have a wife or girlfriend feel the need to call 911.

In other words, by Vikings standards established over the past 20 years, Culpepper was almost beatific in his public conduct. Thus, the source of this strange parting between Culpepper and the Vikings remains mysterious.

We know that Culpepper's long streak of being a stand-up guy came to an end on Oct. 12, when the reports of Sex Cruise had surfaced and he refused to comment in his weekly press conference. If he was that rattled by boat party questions from the media, one can only imagine how rattled he might have been by questions from Mrs. Culpepper.

Daunte suffered his season-ending knee injury 18 days later. Then, in mid-December, he was among four Vikings charged with misdemeanors stemming from Sex Cruise.

On Jan. 12, owner Zygi Wilf stiffed Culpepper at a scheduled meeting, and Culpepper responded by stiffing new coach Brad Childress for their scheduled meeting.

Somehow in those three months, from his no comment to the media to his no comment to Childress, Culpepper's relationship with the Vikings changed from franchise quarterback to persona non grata.

By Tuesday's trade, the Vikings had reached this point with Culpepper: They were less unsettled by news of the trade getting out before Daunte had taken his Miami physical than by the leak of information that several players (Brad Johnson included) were in New York being fitted for new uniforms.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is a team that apparently plans to enter the season with a 38-year-old and a couple of nobodies at quarterback, but what's important is the 2006 Vikings will be bringing back uniforms with purple pants.

Gaudy pants aside, the Vikings are headed into the great unknown with Childress. He's a first-time head coach tying his wagon to Johnson, who graded out at C+ in nine starts for the Vikings last season, after flunking his way to the bench in four 2004 starts for Tampa Bay.

The sure winner here is Culpepper. He avoided being traded to Oakland. The problem would not have been a renewal of his love-hate relationship with Moss. It's the owner, Al Davis, who has turned so dingy in his old age he couldn't find a coach to take the Raiders job. He wound up being forced to recycle Art Shell.

Culpepper would have found coaching chaos in Oakland, or been surrounded by novices in Minnesota. In Miami, he falls into a situation where the coaching will be impeccable, with Nick Saban in charge and Mike Mularkey as offensive coordinator.

Saban started his turnaround of the Dolphins in the second half of last season ... without a quarterback. Mularkey did well enough in the coordinator's role in Pittsburgh to get a shot as head coach in Buffalo. Unlike Childress, Mularkey previously has called plays in the NFL, and with success.

The Vikings already have spent a hunk of cash in free agency, with a minimal impact: a placekicker marginally better than the incumbent, a backup running back to join other backups and a linebacker with a bad foot.

The Vikings do have a chance to get something significant out of this early shopping spree, if Seattle chooses not to match the gigantic offer to guard Steve Hutchinson. Put Hutchinson between left tackle Bryant McKinnie and a healthy center in Matt Birk, and there will be impressive blocking power inside those purple pants.

If Seattle matches?

The Vikings will have added little, and done so while giving away a quarterback who has not played in his last Pro Bowl.

Patrick Reusse can be heard weekdays on AM-1500 KSTP at 6:45 and 7:45 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. • preusse@startribune.com
It's always the same - the franchises in town either a) don't do enough or b) do the wrong thing. Now in the case of the T-Wolves, they're right.

Complete hacks. They have ditched the traditional journalist formula of reporting the news and offering insight to antogonize the home town fans in regards to their home town teams to generate more hub-bub about their articles.

Outside of the Power Trip with Mike Morris, KFAN has become nearly unlistenable.

Zygi should buy a sports radio station and tell his broadcasters to tell both sides; be critical but be honest. I suspect Minnesota fans would love to hear an honest opinion about their local teams.

Did anyone see the 11 PM Sportscenter last night? They interviewed Culpepper and he said he would be starting week 1. Is his knee ahead of schedule or is he being optimistic.

Yup - he said he's be ready. But what is he supposed to say?

"My knee is an absolute mess and I doubt I'll be raedy for the 2007 season?"

Miami must think he will be ready as well. They released Frerotte( I would think they would resign him) and Rosenfels is gone.

:goodposting: [Most, Steve Francis aside] Players don't pull themselves out of games because of injury, coaches, team doctors and GM's pull injuried players out of games.
