Screw you guys (at least some of you), I’m taking Rush and this is one of my favorites. Yo Mama selects:

23.19 - Rush - Permanent Waves (1980)

1 - The Spirit of Radio

2 - Freewill

3 - Jacob’sLadder

4 - Entre Nous

5 - Different Strings

6 - Natural Science
what happened to side two?

Did it interfere with the Coca-Cola 600 race? I think there is other races that surround that.
There was a rain delay on Sunday but they've been doubling and tripling up races to provide live sports content for Fox.

There was supposed to be a race on Wednesday night but it was postponed.  It doesn't look like it's going to happen tonight either.

22.30... David Sylvian- Gone to Earth

Wave

Taking the veil

I've elsewhere and frequently mentioned my profound weakness for Sylvian, starting early in HS with Japan and following his solo career that lost his Japan fans of my group (too boring, too self important, too pretentious).

His music has been a good friend to me since the 80s, from getting me through rough spots to celebrating good ones. He has a habit of making everything with an undercurrent of sadness...even his beautiful love songs like Wave. I don't usually do Taking the Veil, but it has a more Japany sound to it and felt good this morning.

I'm sure these will be play list skippers...don't care.
I meant to point out a pretty nice lineup in this too... Including multiple flugelhornists:

David Sylvian – lead vocals, keyboards (A1, A3, B1, B2, B3), guitar (A1, A3, A4, B2) electronics (A1, A2)

Robert Fripp – guitar (A1, A4, B1, B2, B3, D1, D5), Frippertronics (A4, B1, B2, B3)

Steve Jansen – drums (A1, A3, B1, B2, B3)

Phil Palmer – acoustic guitar (A1)

Ian Maidman – bass (A1, B2, B3)

Kenny Wheeler – flugelhorn (A2, A3)

John Taylor – piano (A2)

Bill Nelson – guitar (A3, B1, B3, C1, C2, D4)

Richard Barbieri – electronics (A3, B1)

Harry Beckett – flugelhorn (B1)

Mel Collins – sax (B2, B3)

B.J. Cole – pedal steel (B3, C5)

Joseph Beuys – voice (C1)

John G. Bennett – voice (A4)

Robert Graves – voice (D5)

Dawnrazor - Fields of the Nephilim (1987)

what better fusion is there than heavy industrialized Goth set against a Spaghetti Western backdrop?

🤔

debut offering from these Leone/Morricone miners from the Hinterlands of Stevenage - got this pretty much upon it's release, as a Brit bird i fancied at the time was related to the platter's producer.

the style was an anomaly in the Goth world, to put it mildly ... but their consistent jack hammering bought many of the denizens of doom into the fold.

simply a fistful of in your face frenzy - they had this shtick down, and they friggin' owned it ... frontman Carl McCoy comes thisclose to birthing the Cookie monster vocal vibe that would go on to dominate the blacker corners of the metal genre - he croaks this mutha the #### out, gotta hand it to 'em.

it's dark and atmospheric and surreal as all hell - enough bombast to make Bauhaus look like tube station buskers in comparision.

giddyup!

23.23 - Living with the Law - Chris Whitley (1991)

One of the most impressive debut albums I've ever heard.  It was one of those where you hear it playing in a record store and immediately grab it from the stacks.

Whitley came on like an old soul singing songs that had existed forever but they were wrapped in an atmospheric production that made them sound totally modern.  Whitley hated the record because he thought it was too pretty and recorded the follow-ups with an uncompromising sound stripped down to the bare bones.  He made some other questionable career moves, became a heroin addict, kicked his habit, got cancer and died from it in 2005.

Kick the Stones

Dust Radio

23.03: David Gilmour - Live In Gdansk (2008)

Didn't get any of the Floyd stuff I wanted, but Waters is being extra dooshy these days, so I'm siding with his sworn enemy. Lots of "newer" material off the On An Island along with some Floyd classics. Gilmour still sounds at the top of his game here with incredible guitar work (even for him). The version of "Echoes" here is as good as any version they ever did, solo or band-wise. Bittersweet concert in that it was Richard Wright's last performance before he died right before the album's release.

Side 1

"Speak to Me" – 1:23

"Breathe" – 2:49

"Time" – 5:38

"Breathe (Reprise)" – 1:32

"Castellorizon" –3:47

"On an Island" – 7:26 (can't imagine a more appropriate DID tune; great alternating solos between David and Roxy Music's Phil Manzanara)

"The Blue" – 6:39

"Red Sky at Night" – 3:03

"This Heaven" – 4:33

"Then I Close My Eyes" – 7:42

"Smile" – 4:26

"Take a Breath" – 6:47

"A Pocketful of Stones" – 5:41

"Where We Start" – 8:01

Side 2

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" – 12:07

"Astronomy Domine" – 5:02

"Fat Old Sun" – 6:40 (one of my favorite PF deeper cuts)

"High Hopes" – 9:57

"Echoes" – 25:26

"Wish You Were Here" – 5:15

"A Great Day for Freedom" – 5:56

"Comfortably Numb" – 9:22

PICK 23.21

SQUEEZE - ARGYBARGY (1980)

Songs

- If I Didn't Love You-

- Another Nail In My Heart

I love these guys, but dammit ...IRL I would be taking "Singles" - but it's clearly a greatest hits collection (up to that point) (and about 5 other Todd albums :) ).  Also, I hate to leave off "Pulling Mussels" ...if there is a demand by the group here to swap "If I Didn't Love You" for that I would be open

23.20 Sublime - 40 Oz to Freedom

(1992)

I wore this thing out in hs. First on cassette and then on cd. Imo, it's definitive Sublime, which isn't everyone's cup o' tea. Some dancehall, some dub reggae, dipped the toes in some punk or thrash, they borrowed from this artist, mimicked that one, and thanked them at the end of the disc. They sold this out of the trunks of their cars and that grassroots effort (along with making really good music) got them a major record gig for their self titled (RIP, Bradley) and carved out a niche genre from the mid nineties through the early aughts.

22 tracks and I'm not going to list them all...here are the ones for the playlist:

40 Oz to Freedom

We're Only Gonna Die for Our Own Arrogance

Missed out all the Beatles discs and this is the best solo work left. Skipping the hits and going deep.

John Lennon- Walls and Bridges (1974)

Old Dirty Road

Steel and Glass

I see 3 of the probably top 10-15 American musical artists of the 20th century are still available. Might be time to make my move on one or two of them.

23.09 The Blues Brothers Soundtrack - The Blues Brothers (& others) (1980)

Hard to beat the talent lineup here, though Jake ain't the world's best singer. I'll go with a couple of icons.

"Shake A Tail Feather" (w/Ray Charles)

"Minnie The Moocher" (w/Cab Calloway)
Oh, awesome. Slipped my mind, but I played the hell out of my copy. You could hardly go wrong with anything off the soundtrack, but great playlist picks. "Shake a Tailfeather" would be a lock for me too.

I'm not sure who you're referring to, but looking at my queue I can confidently say it isn't them.

So...by all means!

humpless week shuffle -

Salt of the Earth, Rolling Stones - the beginning of the alleycat Stones. as i wrote too much about in DocOc's thread, i do not care for the alleycat Stones. but i love this tune. 9.1

Riders on the Storm, Doors - life is indeed a rainy nite in a gas station on the road to Hell. be vital, be real, be caring, be bold. 10

Give Up the Funk, Parliament - forgot the 5th and most important of the gas-station rules - be funky. 10.1

Leave a Trace, CHVRCHES - Well, it's single groove, singer doing the same monochromatic 1-4-5 singing that drives me nutz and, while she at least holds some notes, it's probably thx to Autotune. But it blended well w Parliament and wasnt offensive. 6.8

Kick Out the Jams, Presidents of the United States - Hey, those young people kicked the jams out! Get em back in here, mother####er!! 8.6

Out of the Frying Pan, Meat Loaf - building a bridge from Dashboard Light to Tenacious D one overcooked patty at a time....6.6

Long Black Veil, Rosanne Cash - According to her in Ken Burns Country Music, this is what Roseanne sang to her father as he died. It dont fix this mix, but it shonuff fits everything else. 9.8

Empire Ants, Gorillaz - whaddya know - electronica that's actual songs. like everything i've heard from Gorillaz. Not enought to be a customer, but...7.7

Something, Something, Spoon. Been a fan since they were on ACL. Seem to know their way around a song. 8

Strange Feelin' - Listening to this guy is like handling a bolt of highly-spun cloth. The textures are just perverse. 9

Happy 40th anniversary to this album. One of their best.

Love seeing stuff like this, with a the drums isolated. This is The Spirit of Radio from ESL.

I had this on my radar - loved this record. Saw him open for Tom Petty and also on one of the smaller stages on a H.O.R.D.E. tour.

ETA: They even used his song, Poison Girl, in an episode of Baywatch. Big time.

I highly doubt anyone has this on their radar. Great movie. Great soundtrack. Not usually a big fan of autotune but in this case I think it works for Let Go. Pretty sure most songs were written specifically for the movie (though I am sure some have made their way on to individual artists albums).

Round 23) Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse Soundtrack - Various Artists (2018)

What's Up Danger

Let Go

Spotlight but not on list since it has 1Billion + views and is likely played out for this crowd but still a great song.
