I've elsewhere and frequently mentioned my profound weakness for Sylvian, starting early in HS with Japan and following his solo career that lost his Japan fans of my group (too boring, too self important, too pretentious).

His music has been a good friend to me since the 80s, from getting me through rough spots to celebrating good ones. He has a habit of making everything with an undercurrent of sadness...even his beautiful love songs like Wave. I don't usually do Taking the Veil, but it has a more Japany sound to it and felt good this morning.

I'm sure these will be play list skippers...don't care.

Dawnrazor - Fields of the Nephilim (1987)

what better fusion is there than heavy industrialized Goth set against a Spaghetti Western backdrop?



debut offering from these Leone/Morricone miners from the Hinterlands of Stevenage - got this pretty much upon it's release, as a Brit bird i fancied at the time was related to the platter's producer. 

the style was an anomaly in the Goth world, to put it mildly ... but their consistent jack hammering bought many of the denizens of doom into the fold. 

simply a fistful of in your face frenzy - they had this shtick down, and they friggin' owned it ... frontman Carl McCoy comes thisclose to birthing the Cookie monster vocal vibe that would go on to dominate the blacker corners of the metal genre - he croaks this mutha the #### out, gotta hand it to 'em. 

it's dark and atmospheric and surreal as all hell - enough bombast to make Bauhaus look like tube station buskers in comparision.

23.23 - Living with the Law - Chris Whitley (1991)

One of the most impressive debut albums I've ever heard.  It was one of those where you hear it playing in a record store and immediately grab it from the stacks.

Whitley came on like an old soul singing songs that had existed forever but they were wrapped in an atmospheric production that made them sound totally modern.  Whitley hated the record because he thought it was too pretty and recorded the follow-ups with an uncompromising sound stripped down to the bare bones.  He made some other questionable career moves, became a heroin addict, kicked his habit, got cancer and died from it in 2005.

23.03: David Gilmour - Live In Gdansk (2008)

Didn't get any of the Floyd stuff I wanted, but Waters is being extra dooshy these days, so I'm siding with his sworn enemy. Lots of "newer" material off the On An Island along with some Floyd classics. Gilmour still sounds at the top of his game here with incredible guitar work (even for him). The version of "Echoes" here is as good as any version they ever did, solo or band-wise. Bittersweet concert in that it was Richard Wright's last performance before he died right before the album's release.

I wore this thing out in hs. First on cassette and then on cd. Imo, it's definitive Sublime, which isn't everyone's cup o' tea. Some dancehall, some dub reggae, dipped the toes in some punk or thrash, they borrowed from this artist, mimicked that one, and thanked them at the end of the disc. They sold this out of the trunks of their cars and that grassroots effort (along with making really good music) got them a major record gig for their self titled (RIP, Bradley) and carved out a niche genre from the mid nineties through the early aughts.

Empire Ants, Gorillaz - whaddya know - electronica that's actual songs. like everything i've heard from Gorillaz. Not enought to be a customer, but...7.7

I had this on my radar - loved this record. Saw him open for Tom Petty and also on one of the smaller stages on a H.O.R.D.E. tour.

ETA: They even used his song, Poison Girl, in an episode of Baywatch. Big time.

I highly doubt anyone has this on their radar. Great movie. Great soundtrack. Not usually a big fan of autotune but in this case I think it works for Let Go. Pretty sure most songs were written specifically for the movie (though I am sure some have made their way on to individual artists albums).
