Desert Island Album Draft - 15th Anniversary Edition - 50 Rounds in the books, sign up now for KP's listening program (2 Viewers)

My son moved out of our house right after graduation and rented an in-law until from his grandparents in a heavily African American part of SF.  In the first year after he moved to the Bayview, he was stopped by the police six times.  He was never cited for anything. I cried the night he told me that.  He had always wanted to be in law enforcement from a very young age.  and trained at the SFPD academy in summer during high school.  Getting pulled over repeatedly put a damper on his career plans.  He joined the Air Force and is three years into his stint.  When he came back at start of shutdown, I asked if was still interested in law enforcement but just smiled and shrugged.  He's a funny kid-he usually signs off our family videocons with "stay Black".
Doesn't the Air Force pay for some of schooling once you're out? If he was still interested in Law Enforcement, he could get a BS Degree in Criminal Justice, and be a cop for a couple of years, and then join the FBI. My mom's good friend's son works for the FBI in Colorado.

Blur - Coffee and TV - Oasis was a better band at the outset but Blur got better and Oasis got stagnant.  Cool song but went on a little too long.

Alanis - You Oughta Know - Karma gets me for speaking ill of her earlier but Morissette is like a more annoying Sophie B. Hawkins.

Justin Timberlake - SexyBack - My cultural appropriation sensors are working overtime this week but this is still a banger.

Paul Simon - Under African Skies - Wish I had this album on my island.  The suppleness of this bassline after the metronomic one in the Timberlake song was a big contrast.
Paul and Damon have been known to appropriate a thing or two as well... sounds like a W for Alanis, I think.

I'm not sure I have here to be honest. When we were most serious about it, we were also keeping everything close to the vest. Now that we're waffling, we're talking more openly about it, if that makes any sense.
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse?

is it appropriating if you are collaborating with the culture you are lifting from? I don't see Timberlake collaborating w Timbaland as appropriation. Albarn's work w the Gorillaz...same thing

Elvis and the record companies taking music from black artists and profiting from it, that's a different story.

His four year stint is up next year.  He wasn't planning to re-enlist but the state of the economy is going to impact his decision.

Being self-sufficient has always been important to him.  He always has a plan but he doesn't always tell his parents until the wheels are in motion.

It's all in the gumbo.

WE'RE GOIN' TO FIDDY (50)
You know, I was considering popping up when you guys hit 30 with my own list of "Val's Desert Island Quality Albums Nobody took in 30 Rounds", but if you maniacs are going that deep all that will be left unpicked in all the world will be Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli, so I guess no list from me...

Make it, and hold it until the end.

🎶  🚬   :coffee:   🚬  🎶

... 4:17 a.m. shufflin'

Breaking Us In Two - Worst Father in Gary

i always enjoyed the tempo of this one (them bongos) ... an album that totally eschewed guitars, Joe was "the man" on his terms - 9.0

When You Sleep - 1,000 Be 5

was always kinda on the fence with this lot, the shoegaze craze was lush enough, and these cats sat at the dais, if not flat out spawning it ... still view it as too murky - opposite of the Chain's feedback, i prefer the screech over the shimmer - but still get my feet caught on this fly paper of sound - 7.0

Mother - Dr. Winston O'Boogie

so much better than "Imagine", good god ... right up there with "Working Class Hero" and "Cold Turkey" for my favorite solo Lennon work ... not as fetal as the PF tune of same title due to John working some of that Primal Scream therapy he was going through in - 10+

Through The Wire - Mr. Kim's Bookshop

first Kanye song i've ever purposely listened to ... ya know, it's catchy as #### - really love the flow and bounce of the intro ... but then those "yehhhh, yehhhhhs" burst in - the backing track (kinda Chipmunk-y) really saves this from being a perma-skip ... i certainly won't be seeking it out on my own, but i won't wretch when it comes shufflin' - 6.0

Autonomy - Get A Buzz, Richard

they loved playing with metal riffs, framing them in a really heavy pop swirl ... been misappropriating the lyric as "I ... I Want You, On Top Of Me" ever since i could actually use it in the biblical sense - such an awesome crunch to this - 10

Mr. Brightside - Kowalskis

these cats would've owned the 80s, never disappointed when i play them, this is an epic mouthful of power pop rocks ... they should be so much bigger than they are, but, hey ... it's a current world of hip-pop and speaking thru filters! so we got that going for us   10

Smile - Janis Jelly

if i want Neil Young, i'll go dig out my Neil Young ... lot worse you could be derivative of in a song, but ... 6.5

Game Of Pr1cks - The Gee Bees

hell yeah ... loving this lo-fi slab - has a punky Merseybeat vibe - SOLD! 9.0

Layla (Acoustic Live) - Really Slow Hand

not a fan of Clapton, not a fan of the original ... this lounge lizard "feel" is painful for me to sit thru - 3.0

Whole Lotta Love - LZ2 Sound System

algorithm gods graced me with a proper pallette wash ... bless them 🙏 9.0

Arc Of A Diver - He's A Man

summer of '80 all over again, heard this at Lucky Leo's on the boardwalk and blew through over $10 trying to win it at the album stand ... some 40 quarters later i was broke ... my buddy Mick simply made me a cassette rip for free, but, yeah ... it was the thrill of the gamble that grabbed me (see me in the wagering thread) - Winwood is normally a miss with me, but this is better than the ensuing 80s pablum that "broke" him - 10

I Saw Her Standing There - Moondogs

"why don't you have a seat right over there, otb" 🤔

this is pure Hamburg-esque energy, and Punk as ####.  the lads had some dirt under them nails, don't care how much Brian cleaned 'em up - 10

Rainbow in the Dark - Menmoch

the synth hits elevate it from being a Scorpions boost, great 80s touch ... RJD's pipes, tho 🤟9.0

final tally

2 cuppas

baker's dozen tunes

8.34 avg

10 smokes

... we over 1,296 songs yet? (that's how many i have in my Spotty)

Great.  The kid and dogs wake me up about 90 mins early, so I decide to grab some coffee, have an early morning shuffle session, and attempt to chill.

First up = The Beatles - I am the Walrus.

Wait, Mrs. R hasn't taken these yet?

Was going to fire up the playlist at work today and realized I left my speaker at home :(.

whats the best Bluetooth speaker or headphones for like $100 or less?

One of my favorite recent bands, saw them live as well a few years ago, great show and Taylor Goldsmith (now Mr. Mandy Moore) is a terrific songwriter, always enjoy their stuff... this is my fave

Rd 38 Pick: Bob Dylan ‎– Nashville Skyline - 1969

Tracklist

  • Girl From The North Country
  • Nashville Skyline Rag
  • To Be Alone With You
  • I Threw It All Away
  • Peggy Day
  • Lay Lady Lay
  • One More Night
  • Tell Me That It Isn't True
  • Country Pie
  • Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You

AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

John Wesley Harding suggested country with its textures and structures, but Nashville Skyline was a full-fledged country album, complete with steel guitars and brief, direct songs. It's a warm, friendly album, particularly since Bob Dylan is singing in a previously unheard gentle croon -- the sound of his voice is so different it may be disarming upon first listen, but it suits the songs. While there are a handful of lightweight numbers on the record, at its core are several excellent songs -- "Lay Lady Lay," "To Be Alone With You," "I Threw It All Away," "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You," as well as a duet with Johnny Cash on "Girl From the North Country" -- that have become country-rock standards. And there's no discounting that Nashville Skyline, arriving in the spring of 1969, established country-rock as a vital force in pop music, as well as a commercially viable genre.

I stopped at round 20...so I owe like 30 albums?!!!!

Holy crap. No idea if I can make it rain that much. Is there a way to alphabetize the spreadsheet so I don’t duplicate somebody?

They promise education, but really they give you tests and scores
And they predictin' prison population by who scoring the lowest
And usually the lowest scores the poorest and they look like me
And every day on evening news they feed you fear for free
And you so numb you watch the cops choke out a man like me
And 'til my voice goes from a shriek to whisper, "I can't breathe"
And you sit there in the house on couch and watch it on TV
The most you give's a Twitter rant and call it a tragedy
But truly the travesty, you've been robbed of your empathy
Replaced it with apathy,

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

LOOK AT ALL THESE SLAVE MASTERS POSIN ON YOUR DOLLAR

Madness by Muse (live) is good.
I love the song and this version.

I know it's not probably what @Ilov80s had in mind when he was talking about living rock gods, and I know they seem to be disliked in here, but Mr. Bellamy did come to mind when the topic was brought up.  These 3 put on a show.

39.07 Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska 1982

This is probably my least favorite Springsteen record. I just don't enjoy the Boss doing the country sound. It's my least favorite up to and including Tunnel of Live which is better.  Everything after Tunnel hurts my ears.  But this record has a couple of very good tunes, and needs to be taken.  Check out this JRAD cover.  It's really good, especially once the music starts.  @shuke must know this one.

Atlantic City (>I Know You Rider) JRAD cover

Johnny 99

I would have taken Reason to Believe, but live guy took it already.  Should've been Jersey Girl!
