if they had an award for Special Teams rookie of the year, it would be all his.

But, they break it down into offense and defense so he has no chance.

Heck for defense wouldnt Mark Anderson be one of the front runners.....10 sacks for the year now I believe for a 5th rounder?

he's having an incredible season no doubt but isn't even a starter on his team. DeMeco Ryans should have that award locked up. Leading the league in tackles with 105 solos, while also adding 3.5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. He's about the only player on the Texans defense doing anything most weeks.the only other player in the conversation with those two is probably AJ Hawk.Ernie Sims and Tamba Hali are also having great rookie years.on offense, these six seem like the clear options right now with Vince Young looking like the favorite:QB: Vince Young, Matt LeinartRB: Joseph Addai, Maurice Jones-Drew, Reggie BushWR: Marques Colston

When you have a weapon like this kid, you have to get him some snaps on offense. Get some packages for him like the Saints use with Bush. Bubble screens, wheel routes, etc. Stuff designed to get him in space.

If Hester doesn't win ROY he will be the 2nd Bear in a row to get gyped out of the award.
Its to make up for Anthony Thomas stealing it from Ladanian

Nothing, but the U in him baby!!! He won't win it, but his impact can be justified as being just as strong as anyone else. He was incredible at the U and now he's doing the same in the NFL.

I love what the kid's doin, but he probably shouldn't win rookie of the year. There seems to be a lot of great rookies this year and I can't see the award going to a special teams player.

On the other hand, if he ends the season with 8 or 9 TDs and SHATTERS the all time record, then he better be considered.

The only post that really addresses the topic. If the question was: Which rookie has had the biggest impact? Then Hester would be in the top 3 but because there is no Special Teams rookie of the year he will have to be content with making the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams.

You excited about "The U" going to Boise?

Already being discussed here (can we merge these please?). I called it before yesterday's game :pattingmyselfonback:

Look, he deserves a lot of consideration:

1. Leading league (not rookies) in punt returns (ave)

2. Tied record for longest touchdown in NFL history.

3. Set new record for most return TDs in a season (currently at 6)

4. Only the 6th player in NFL history to score on two returns in one game.

5. Has TD with punt return, KO return, and Missed field goal return.

6. Starting to play more DB as well. I'd love to see an INT return TD as well!

The kid is a game-changer and will be a pro-bowler. What other rookies will be named to the pro bowl? And how can you go to the pro bowl and not be ROY (if you're the only rookie there). Which rookie has had this much impact on a team or game? Last night on NFL network after the game, Deion said that the kid is already better than he was. Thats high praise. Even Lovie alluded yesterday that he should be considered as an offensive candidate because of his game breaking skills and his scoring. There's lots to think about.

Colston and Bush. You could make a good argument that Bush is the grease that makes the NO offense the juggernaught that it is. He has to be acounted for on every play and that is opening up a lot opportunities for everybody else.

Nope...Colston will win, but Hester will get some votes. I wonder who gets more though: Bush, Maroney or Hester.
I think Vince Young has passed Colston these past couple of weeks. He's put a complete crap team on his back and made them respectable.

if you had a vote, would you vote him for offensive rookie of the year or defensive rookie of the year?

Since 1967 The Associated Press has given two annual Rookie of the Year Awards to NFL American football players: one for an offensive player and one for a defensive player.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Defensive..._the_Year_Award

local NY press (however biased) is supporting center Nick Mangold for Offensive ROTY consideration. Of course, it would be unprecedented and almost impossible given this year's fantastic rookie class, but Mangold has been a godsend for the Jets.

Not that anybody cares, but I'd put Hester at #4 or #5 overall for rookies depending on how they end the year, since there is an offensive and defensive award, I don't think he has a chance, but should make the Pro-Bowl.

1. Vince Young

2 & 3 MJD/Colston

4 & 5 Bush/Hester

I'm not that enamored with Bush, MJD does the same things and more with a lot less hype.

Nick Mangold (starting center for the Jets, who are in the playoff hunt) and Marcus McNeill (starting left tackle for the Super Bowl favorite Chargers) should also be OROY candidates IMO. I realize that the voters favor skill position players, so I don't really expect them to get the consideration they deserve in the media... but I think we should recognize them as deserving of consideration here.

the Jets rank 16th in rushing offense and 22nd in passing offense. I'm sure Mangold has been great for them and offset the loss of Mawae, but I don't think he's made a bigger impact than any of the six players I mentioned above.I agree that McNeill has been very impressive as well, but he's overshadowed by Tomlinson, Gates, Rivers, etc. there.
