DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (1 Viewer)

14.12 - Ordinary World - Duran Duran (1993)
This was a great comeback song by them. After their huge early-mid '80s success, they were kind of bleh, but this was a gem. Love the guitar work here of Warren Cuccurullo, who used to play with Zappa and Missing Persons, and replaced Andy Taylor. I still say that, pound for pound, John Taylor was one of best bass players of his day.
Oh, no question. And hardly ever recognized properly, either. Nice catch.
...but the little girls understand
Back in like 2007, my then-girlfriend, now-wife, went to an Eddie Money concert and got blackout drunk. Somewhere along the way she found a John Taylor trading card. Doesn't remember where she found it or who gave it to her. She attempted to bribe a security guard to let her backstage to meet Eddie Money by offering the trading card to the guard. Unfortunately, he didn't let her in.

I went over to her parents' house that night to pick her up, and she was just sitting on the lawn, absolutely hammered, screaming Eddie Money songs, holding the John Taylor trading card and her cell phone. Who knew that they made Duran Duran trading cards?

14xx: "Epic" - Faith No More (1990)

A lot of eclectic stuff going on here - fits my collection well.

It's it. What is it?
Fantastic. I had that down for '89 in my notes though.
single released in 90
I gave you the single edit. 1990 was the worst BTW so good pull. I've been scooped twice and now I'm stuck with songs that might get me beat up in certain establishments. Guess I should have thought of that when I was blowing early picks on Spirit and Jeff Beck.

Today I will be highlighting love as a theme. Since it is a bright and sunny afternoon here, it only makes sense to start with the heartbreaking, soul crushing dark side of love because if you are at a dark dive bar drinking a beer and listening to the jukebox at noon on a weekday, you probably got it bad...

14.A

1962- Lena Horne I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good

14.B

2008- Beyonce I'd Rather Go Blind

I actually have Presidents week off. So I will check in when I can but not sure I can update the sheet as frequently

My brother is a teacher. They're getting like five days.

Which is nice. I will get to hang out with him.

I just looked through the top 100 from 1990 and wow, a few schtick songs tim must like, I might actually listen to Phil's songs but wouldn't download any. Overall a horrible year. Thankful TMBG released a great song which didn't make the top 100.

I missed the World Party pick when it was made. Nice song, underrated band.

and it's Tony! Toni! Toné!

Somehow I missed some. Not sure how

Wilson Phillips :lmao:

Tim seems like a smart guy and a very fast typist but I've underestimated his schtick capabilities

1990 was a very good year for rap imo. Young MCs who'd grown up on hip hop were just entering the scene and the crackdown on sampling hadn't happened yet.

Outside of a song here and there, I've never been able to get too excited about newer Maiden stuff
Big fan of the Di'Anno years up through Piece Of Mind, but spotty for me thereafter. As incredible musicians as they are, they never really morphed much.
Nope, but did many of those metal bands? I probably got into them later than some, so 7th Son is still one of my favs. I think every album from Killers ---> 7th Son is great.
Damned if you do, Damned if you dont

Metallica tried to morph and guys come on Internet boards and say have these guys put anything of note out in the last 25 years ;)

I still stand by that. I fully admit that I am a simple man, especially with my metal. No need to reinvent the wheel every album.

Honestly, i don't know what happened to Metallica. I didn't revolt against the Black Album, it's pretty damn good. Hell, I even put in S&M every now and then. Maybe they always have been, but mostly I just think the lyrics are ####in' stupid, and it feels like they are trying to get back to their heavy days, but just don't have it in them anymore. Like Zilla said, I think DM had some good stuff musically, but again, the lyrics just brought it down for me and I couldn't listen to it much. Maybe they can build on that and have another good album in them.

Also didn't realize that they have only had 1 album in 13 years. Like I said in the other thread, they were the baddest of the bad at one point, but a lot of the other bands of the day seem to be able to put out decent product now. I can't quite put my finger on what happened to them - band turmoil, different writing process, tried to branch out more than the others??

Actually, what's been drafted for 1990 isn't bad. The top 100 was worse by a lot.
It's not a deep year. Thankfully my initial thought for that year has not yet been taken . . . . [jinx]
I think 2000 and 2010 are worse as far as my playlists are concerned. I had a number of 1990 selections that could've worked.
I had the Lee Ann Womack song that I selected cued up as my 2000 pick (as well as a backup that has yet to be taken) from the beginning of the draft, but I fully agree on 2010. Not a good one for me either.

It is interesting looking through the albums of that year. It just feels like one of those bridge years where stuff from the 80s was dying out a bit, but the early 90s grunge/alt/rap hadn't come into the spotlight yet. There are some gems, but it really feels like a mish mash of music from 89-91 as I look at my lists.

I guess it's meant to be

Romance is misery

So much for memories

And now I'm headed to the Penitentiary

See me on T.V.

The next cop series

I am a danger

I guess I should've done something about my anger

But I'll never learn

Real things I don't concern

I pour kerosene on everything I love and watch it burn

I know it's my fault

But I wasn't happy it was over

She through a fit so I crashed that piece a #### nova

15.a Midnight Oil, "Blue Sky Mine" (1990)

There isn't much of a better way to hook me at the start of a song than an instrumental introduction in which the parts join in sequentially to form the whole, long before the vocal ever begins. Make those sounds a flanged guitar, a Hammond, and a wailing French horn and you've got me for sure. NOW make the song about a despicable act of industrial corporate greed resulting in human suffering, and, yeah, this will make my playlist for the next, oh, 26 years and counting. The vocals from Peter Garrett and the backing musicians are also outstanding. An all-time classic for me.

15.b Lifehouse, "Smoke and Mirrors" (2010)

This outstanding track has been on infinite repeat in my car on many a long drive. The lyrics evoke Tom Petty, the overall musical approach suggests Rascal Flatts, the growling lead vocal is very similar to a lower-pitched Don Henley (complete with two nice backing harmonies and a fourth one I finally concluded that I've ghosted for years), and the familiar but always effective "loud Hammond B-2 stacking behind three R.E.M.-sounding guitar parts" chestnut (which recurs throughout my playlist) works perfectly. Nice percussion, too. Love this one.
