DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (2 Viewers)

Despite the fact that it's not the house I grew up in, my parents have a room with a bunch of my old teenage stuff. It's a bit weird to walk into a room where there's still an Iron Maiden poster with Eddie.

I had no idea Maiden released an album last year
One of my favorites of last year. Their best stuff since '88, IMO. Any fans should definitely check it out.
Listening now
Nice - will be curious on your take of the album.

ETA:

I have loved their output from 2000+ in general. Final Frontier was a little weak, but the rest have been damn good. This one was just a notch up from those even, IMO.

Was only able to get through three songs because I have a class coming in, but so far, sounds like Maiden
Yep, they don't reinvent their sound or anything. Just love that they got back to putting out great stuff after the awful 90s output.

First of all, who's your A&R?

A mountain climber who plays an electric guitar?

But he don't know the meaning of dope,

When he's lookin for a suit-and-tie rap that's cleaner than a bar of soap

That whole 36 chambers album is beastly

Not one bad song

Agree completely, but talking album-wise. You have to shift through a lot of dreck to get the couple gems from those albums. I was surprised how good the Dickenson solo stuff was though.

Outside of a song here and there, I've never been able to get too excited about newer Maiden stuff
Big fan of the Di'Anno years up through Piece Of Mind, but spotty for me thereafter. As incredible musicians as they are, they never really morphed much.

Fair enough. I think for me it still just hits that spot of being my favorite of the metal bands of the 80s,and they are still rocking and having the best output of any of those bands.

Nope, but did many of those metal bands? I probably got into them later than some, so 7th Son is still one of my favs. I think every album from Killers ---> 7th Son is great.

I guess I've left all my teenage faves in a time capsule.. I still listen to their 80's #### all the time

12th(b): FUNKADELIC - Standing on the Verge of Getting It On (1974)

LINK
Jesus, I love this record. eta: it didn't quite fit what I was going for, but I'm glad it's on our collective jukebox. Thanks, KP!
I seem to take a Funkadelic song in every draft they qualify for lately.
Sadly their Warner Bros. material isn't on Spotify anymore
Yeah, I am thinking about changing my Screeching Weasel pick to something on Spotify. Just seems like an incomplete draft if all the songs you chose aren't listenable on the master list.

Indeed, which is why I largely lost interest in Maiden, Priest, AC/DC, etc. and moved on to other stuff.

Revisit the self-titled debut. I like a lot of the DiAnno stuff better too.. grittier, maybe a little more personality.. But the greatest metal song of all time was sung by Bruce

Spotlighting be damned, I would go with Hallowed Be Thy Name.

You clearly never heard me play Run to the Hills on my tuba.

14.12 - Ordinary World - Duran Duran (1993)
This was a great comeback song by them. After their huge early-mid '80s success, they were kind of bleh, but this was a gem. Love the guitar work here of Warren Cuccurullo, who used to play with Zappa and Missing Persons, and replaced Andy Taylor. I still say that, pound for pound, John Taylor was one of best bass players of his day.
Oh, no question. And hardly ever recognized properly, either. Nice catch.

...but the little girls understand

14.a Van Morrison, "Moondance" (1970)

Hard to believe this one is still out there, but it fills nice space in my jukebox. Morrison's gritty vocal is an odd but immediately seizing juxtaposition over the smooth jazz instrumentation that undergirds his vacillating melody throughout. Every single one of the background parts - including a rocking flute - provides something interesting to listen to on repeated plays. This is one of those songs that never fails to evoke a certain mood in me although it was released before I was born and there's no particular linkage to any real-world events in my mind. Fantastic jazz jam that just happens to have Van Morrison singing on top of it.

14.b Seals and Crofts, "Diamond Girl" (1973)

Another jazzy tune, and the type of song that I wish people would start releasing again. Beautiful vocal harmonies, touching lyrics (which do have a real-world resonance for me), and one of my favorite tricks during the choruses, doubling a voice-leading high-pitched staccato guitar with an electric piano playing a slightly different version of the same chord. The inverted structure of the choruses and the more freewheeling verses also work very well for me, as does the solo section (more flute!) building back to a repeat of the chorus. Great guitar work and outstanding rhythm comping by the pianist throughout.
