DI Jukebox Draft (66-15)- Listen up (3 Viewers)

For Round 15

Here are a pair of picks from a show together in the late 90's. My opening pick is a band I'd never heard of before this show, and have since become one of my favorites. A Boston band, who at the time were only a trio (since added a fourth) and I loved the way the drummer played mostly bongos and cymbals and other percussion instruments. They can't be that bad, they have made it onto two Keerock Christmas albums!

1999 - Guster - Barrel of a Gun

They opened for The Barenaked Ladies. One of my favorite shows I'd ever gone to. Unlike a lot of bands, they just seem to be having fun on the stage, interacting with the crowd, and not taking things too seriously. Unfortunately, they took a turn down in 2009, when Steven Page left the band. He has such an incredible voice, and lots of their songs are duets, so if you lose one of the voices...

1998 - The Barenaked Ladies - Alcohol

1985- USA For Africa- "We Are the World"
This song is dumb as ####. It almost made me question whether Ray Charles, Springsteen, and Dylan actually meant what they sang in their better songs if they were singing this hard on a piece of crap like this. After thinking about it for 2 seconds, the answer is "no". Ray could sing his junk mail and it would sound like he was in church. Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, Diana Ross, and Kenny Rogers are all trying to out-bland each other (on their own records, not just this one).

I love this song :bag:

Me too. I've loved it for 30 years. I showed the video to my daughters recently, pointed out the various stars. It's cheesy, repetitive, with awful lyrics, and I love it. And it's absolutely perfect for my draft.

Yo Mama picks:

16.08 -

Once a year or so, I binge listen to a bunch of SOAD and Serj Tankian solo stuff and wonder why I never listen to them more. It's just so far from my normal musical tastes that I forget about them for long stretches of time. But they're pretty good, actually.

I have at least one Lionel-written song coming up. He's terrible. I may pick two.

I like We Are The World only due to the abundance of talent there. Always get a laugh seeing Springsteen's "I'm taking a dump" face in the video.

That said, I would never contemplate drafting it.

16.08 - Chop Suey!, System of a Down (2001)

Whyd you leave the keys upon the table?
You wanted to.

They're one of my favorite concerts. So much fun live.

This will probably get me thrown out of this thread, but Tom Waits is a sham. His early stuff - before he decided croaking was the best way to "sing" - wasn't bad. The music behind him is ok, but the "Hey, man, you just don't Get It" from big fans is silly. I get it, alright.

Lenny was the Bad Company of the 90s. Competent, in-the-trenches. Who is that chick playing drums? I shall marry her one day.
I think she might be hanging out in Eephus' bar.
Great band name
Kravitz' drummer is named Cindy Blackman. Her background is in jazz. She released a few albums as a leader and appeared as a sidewoman on lots more. The gig with Lenny paid some bills.

Sorry, two more with no links. Will def do it after my day of soccer tournaments and hockey jamborees finishes

16a 6th avenue heartache- the wallflowers, 1997

16b The Rising- Bruce Sprinsteen AND THE E STREET BAND, 2002

Fits perfectly.

Hoping you take a couple Billy ocean songs.

enjoyed the discussion this AM re: Chandler, Cain & Alkaline Trio. I never would have associated all three of them if not for this draft.

16 Next Time - Curtis Harding (2014)

I've listened to a few neo soul playlists trying to fill something to fill 2009 & 2011. The name of the genre is stupid IMO because it's more retro than neo. Many tracks are derivative enough to drive me nuts playing spot the influence. Harding has some of that as well but this track is a more original concoction combining rhythm, blues, rock and classic soul.

The recording linked above is the album version sweetened by some horn overdubs. The version on this NSFW video was recorded earlier sans horns and makes effective use of a pair of very small breasts.

16 How Long (Betcha' Got a Chick on the Side) - The Pointer Sisters - 1975

This is the final survivor of my original concept with songs by groups of sisters. There are a lot more bands with brothers but a bar for gay black men might send the wrong impression. NTTAWWT. There's probably zero chance I'd get sniped on this one but I want to put one sisters song on the board before I find a better song from 1975.

The Pointers' reputation hasn't held up well but this track is a sizzling piece of New Orleans inspired funk. Not sure who's in the band now but they're playing tonight at the Bayou Cypress Casino in Charenton, Louisiana

16b - Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star - "Definition" (1998)

No way I wasn't taking something off this album. I can't remember if I picked this one in a different draft so let's go. Personally, one of the most influential albums of my life.

The whole an' not the half of it, forecast and aftermath of it
Projectile that them blasted with, accurate assassin ####
Me an' Kweli close like Bethlehem and Nazareth

After this you be pressin' rewind on top your master disk
Shinin' like an asterisk, for all those that be gatherin'
Connectin' like a round house, from the townhouse to the tenements
'Cause all my Brooklyn residents, all the heavy regiments

Don't believe, here the evidence, where Brooklyn? (whoaaaaa)

See that?
Bound to take it all kid, believe that
From where they sellin' tree at, to where the police be at
Talib Kweli, E.Kwelity, yo' tell them where we be at

Round 16a - Rave On! - Buddy Holly (1958)

Which leads us to my bonus track:

Bonus Track - Rave On! - Steeleye Span

An a cappella cover by the Brits.

Nice pick. They learned their lessons from Allan Tousaint when they wrote this one.
